The Absolute Trainwreck of the Star Wars Holiday Special

  • The Star Wars Holiday Special is a 1978 American television special set in the universe of Star Wars. It's set between the events of the original film and The Empire Strikes Back.
It stars the main cast of the original Star Wars and introduces the character of Boba Fett, who appeared in later films.
A Star Wars comedy variety show musical that fails on almost every level, it should not come as a surprise that behind the scenes there was trouble every step of the way.

At 5 years old, owning a few figures but never having seen the movie because there were no VCRs, this was an AMAZING TV show!!! Not nearly as bad as everyone now makes out. Have you seen the Donnie & Marie Star Wars Special?!? Compared to that, Art Carney made this special into Citizen Kane. I remember having the Snaggletooth figure as a kid but don't think I ever even heard of the Holiday special until UA-cam came out. Its really strange that they thought a variety show would some how be interesting to the audience who would be more excited to see a show that included more space battles and action like the original movie. The cartoon is really has more of a psychedelic look than the ones on Saturday morning. They never made a Star Wars cartoon until 1984 after the final film at the time had come out. It didn't last long one called Droids and the other based on the Ewoks. Recently we all got excited when we saw the millennium falcon again. Star Wars mania really took off when they relaunched the movies and put out the prequels. Children of the 70s remember Star Wars and the impact it had in pop culture and to the generation of youth at the time.

It's not that the whole thing is canon, just the specific elements that get reused. It's kind of clever, what they're doing... Current writers can basically pick and choose among all the weirdness from the first 30 years of Star Wars for the good bits, while ignoring the stuff that didn't work or gets in the way. The Disney canon wipe has basically functioned like a low-key Crisis event, in practice.
(I mean, "Solo" name-dropped Teras Kasi of all things, and that game wasn't strictly canon even at the time.)

I still feel like on some level CBS wanted to punish her for leaving that show (and leaving the cast members of the proposed revamp in the lurch) along with doing the same to Harvey Korman for leaving *The Carol Burnett Show,* so this is how they did it.

I got to watch it when it aired on tv. The nostalgia for me is remembering how excited we were for new Star Wars... I was only 10 years old and it was really cool to see all the characters from the movie on a tv show. The badness of the show didn’t really register at the time, but many years later I couldn’t really remember what the show was about and I think that was my brain’s way of saying, “you don’t need to store this.”

Years ago I made my mom watch The Star Wars Holiday Special but I was kind and fired up the Rifftrax version. When the segment where Luke is in the show comes on she had an exclamation of realization and horror at the same time: she had seen this part back in 1978.
My parents were both in the Air Force and were stationed in Japan when Star Wars came out and hit it big, but it would be another year before they would be stationed back in the States. November 1978 to be exact. "I was flipping through the channels and saw this! It was so bizarre I had to turn it off! Oh my God!"

Think of it this way: The Holiday Special is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in the SW universe.
    Why?
It was the first thing that officially made Star Wars a "going concern". Before this, it was a movie. But with this, the characters and the settings proved that they had life beyond just the movie. The special cemented Star Wars as a BRAND, not just a film. It showed there was more out there than we'd yet seen. This is the first thing that appeard as a continuation, almost a sequel, of the original movie. It's not a standalone thing. It is set firmly after Ep. 4 and before Ep.5, and it interacts with them.
So, while it is awful, and funny in a very bad way, it's also supremely important. I proved that Star Wars was a brand that could be adapted to various kinds of media and could even take a beating... even if it was from itself.
I don't know about you, but to me that makes it more cannon than any of the three new movies.
