In order to sanctify someone, they have to have two confirmed miracles that are recognized by the church. I love your reviews. This show is so awesome. I'm recommending it left and right because I'm not sure it's getting it's rightful time in the spotlight
Got it. Well then by that criteria, Lenny certainly seems to qualify. I've absolutely loved the show as well and continue to suggest it to everyone I can.
two miracles is merely the kicker, they must have led a Chriistian life, devout and holy, throughout, that is more important. [but the two miracles need to be present and confirmed]
I was saddened to hear that from what I've read the second season won't be a continuation per say of the young pope. Possibly a much less role for Jude Law. This is a real head scratcher.
The question of Tonino Pettula is answered in season 2 when Lenny says, "Everybody remembers my miracles but no one remembers my murders. I killed Tonino Pettula."
Nothing signed yet but Paolo Sorrentino has been writing for the last few months, so hopefully we'll get news about a shooting schedule in the near future.
I concur, James. Blew me away! "It doesn't matter," the Young Pope quoting the Blessed Juana (uttered after 17 questions foreshadowed by Cardinal Caltanissetta's 17 prophetic "say" "it"!). All this mush of distinctions. It doesn't matter.
I had no idea what to expect from this show but it really did turn out amazing. Definitely gives you a lot to think about. Thank you for doing these reviews! By the way, what did you think of Lenny confirming to Gutierrez that he doesn't believe in God, and that people who believe in God believe in nothing?
I think the whole point is that phrase "You will find God in everything you like" . Lenny have nothing that he like so even if God manifest himself around him , he will never see him ( that is a good teaching for everyone of us that is too busy whining and complaining about life and dont see all the good things ). Then he slowly mutate . he start to feel deep affection for people ( the two kids sleeping like a cross, Juana, Spencer, Gutierrez... ) and then it start the contrast "If i love God i cant love everything else" like he was too busy to look for God/Parents to see all the good things in the world. At the end i think he find the key ; "Why we belive in God ? Because we have faith that we will see the people we love forever " and that lead us to that other phrase : "if you want to find God look at who you have around" . And when he find the love of others he THEN find God too ( the figure in the sky ). Just my take .
I was completely caught off guard by that comment as well and continue to be bewildered by and fascinated with Lenny's attitude toward his own faith. Probably has a lot to do with searching for his second calling that Michael Spencer alluded a few episodes back.
+geekin.nyc me too, I had to pause the show after that scene to digest it. I have no idea what to make of Lenny's attitude towards his faith. Overall, I still think he doesn't believe in a God that can interact with humans. But it's possible that last scene was meant to represent his second calling and that he realizes that God is smiles, and God is love.
I recently discovered this show and watched 3 times on HBO. It's so beautiful the story line, the writing, scripts and most characters are loveable even Vioelle. It's a pitty in my opinion that the second season went different direction and left me uneasy.
geekin.nyc please watch "l'uomo in più" (Google it), I don't know if there are English subs or not but if they do you're in for a ride, it's Sorrentino's first work and it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
Love the way you talk, I felt as if you were talking to me personally, great all your views and opinions of the series, said them maybe the same way I would, have said them, Great
Hi, if america version of HBO Go has stuff produced by HBO Europe, than there you can find some interesting shows, which feel very different from the ones you normaly gets from US production. Especially how you mentioned, that you found interesting, that one artist shooting/writting whole season... That´s quite a common thing in Europe, but I don´t think, that you can get to them officialy. Few are on Netflix, few on HBO Go though.
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. I love how this entire season was written and directed by one filmmaker with as distinctive a voice as Paolo Sorrentino.
Expected (and feared) that question, hard to remember but few of them (regardles if they´re devoloped by one person or not): Gomorra, Quinquin, Happy Valley, River, Les Revenants, 1992, Wolf Hall, Wasteland, Borgen, The Fall, Engrenages, Nöbel, Trapped The Saboteurs, Shadows, Missing, Last Panthers, Utopia, Silk, british version of Wallander, Mannon, Burning Bush etc. and from US the´re also few examples like well known Knick.
Looks like I have several years of quality work to catch up on. Are any of these shows at work on upcoming seasons? I'd love to get caught up in order to review the next season in real time.
Hard to tell, because in Europe isn´t the same aproach „one season every year around same time like the previous one“. So than can be few years gap between seasons. On other hand, that means more closed aproach to seasons. If you liked Wire and Sopranos, I would started with Gomorra (it´s on HBO Go in Europe), it has two seasons so far. Third is coming in future (creator is now developing show for Netflix based on great movie Subbura; it´s on Netflix and shooting as a director second part of Sicario). But Happy Valley has two stand alone seasons (6 ep each), River one stand alone (6 ep.), The Fall has three seasons with ended story arc, Wolf Hal lis based on book, which have another part, but it is working great as i tis, Wasteland is ended (8 ep), Nöbel has one close season (and it´s on Netflix), Engenages has many closed seasons, each one in different style than previous one, Last Panthers and Saboteours are closed one season stories, Missing is structured as „one season one story; like True Detective or Fargo“. All of them are newer ones, and should/could be found in America also.
Loved this review, you obviously have a good understanding of film production. Further, I completely agree with almost everything you said. However, recently HBO has said they are going a different direction with a new serious called the "New Pope", what are your thoughts on that?
If it gets really bad, it doesn't matter. Season 1 stands tall, whatever follows. Personally i wish they stop at this point and give it additional weight by not "milking" it and leaving some mistery.
What a show, so glad I got around to this. Enjoyed your review! I strongly, strongly recommend The Leftovers, nothing quite like it anywhere, excellently walks a tight rope between the supernatural and reality.
So, in light of them putting "The young Pope" followed by "THE END" isn't it quite possible that all the talk about a possible season 2 was misinformation so people wouldn't know that it was going to end after 10 episodes? If you know that in advance, you probably know he is going to die, and some people will not even bother investing themselves in a show when they know it will end after one season.
You are probably right, but I am so used to GOT using disinformation, I consider it the norm for HBO productions. "The End" kind of seems telling though. Not sure why they would tack that on, if they were just going to come back for a season 2. If the show and Lenny do come back, it looks like he will be going for a ecumenical approach after all.
I think a second season would be wrong. It's perfect as is. They answered all dangling question, left Lennys fate up in the air. For someone who said he didn't believe in God, has shown himself to be a holy man.
@LeisaAs much as I would selfishly like to enjoy another season, I do agree with you. I would like to think that Bishop Spencer's prophesy came true, and he did see his parents again, and the final zoom out was his soul going to heaven.Sister Mary is happy, and where she always wanted to be.The other Bishops have all grown as a result of their contact with Lenny. It is a good place to stop, unless instead of divinity, you want a show about political intrigue etc.
It was definitely an interesting show with many good parts, but I was quite disappointed by the ending. I missed the point and the whole thing seemed... pointless. Also, for me as an atheist, I wasn't always moved by it as if I might have been if I was a Christian theist. But soundtrack, cinematography and actors were very good. Voiello is my favourite. Funny thing, I didn't like the protagonist at all - in my eyes - he was a villain and it seemed strange how everyone forgot on his medieval fanaticism after two good speeches.
The poor creature surely was killed by the bare breasted female protesters, calling themselves Femen. In reality, they got famous protesting bare breasted against Putin.
I think the disappearance of the man with the stigmata is a key to what comes in the next season. That is what was made a point of and has us all wondering why it is unspoken. Also, I feel it is this that was going to be used against the young Pope Lenny only that his successor died. That's just my opinion
I thought he died? I thought the image of jesus in the clouds was the hint that he was dead and rose to heaven? How could there be a sequel after that?
He is gesturing like a maniac with his hands in a most bizarre and inauthentic way, that is so funny....but he gives a nice recap of what he has seen taking place...and....yes.... his non-Catholic viewpoint does stand out like a sore thumb but I guess different religions will take what they will from something, what they wish would be the case. [scandal?]
I guess the next Pope can't take Pius........it is taken now, seems a shame. I have yet to see any of it, does it take place in the 1950's or is it contemporary?

This series touched my soul in so many ways.
Extraordinary series. I think it elevated TV to new heights.
Hell yeah
Think it was responsible for some coming back to the church
Great critique of young pope it had me totally enthralled from start to finish best tv series I have ever watched
I was completely blown away. I think years from now people will look back on this show and talk about how it changed television forever.
In order to sanctify someone, they have to have two confirmed miracles that are recognized by the church.

Love Voiello! What an actor!
I appreciate these reviews. I also loved this show; thought it was thought-provoking, moving and visually splendid.
Thanks for watching my videos. Hopefully this show will inspire more filmmakers to attempt shows as ambitious as this one.
The young pope is pure art. Every frame is filled with intent and is so rich.
I was saddened to hear that from what I've read the second season won't be a continuation per say of the young pope. Possibly a much less role for Jude Law. This is a real head scratcher.
I am bewildered as well. The show would not be the same without him.
The question of Tonino Pettula is answered in season 2 when Lenny says, "Everybody remembers my miracles but no one remembers my murders. I killed Tonino Pettula."
Absolutely a great show, thanks for the review, love it may be coming back for a second season, great info

Perfect way to end what was one of the best seasons of television I've ever seen.
Such an observant remark.
Excellent reviews ! I will rank no.1 for me ... Not because its perfect but because it touched the most relevant matters to me .
I found the show to be incredibly moving as well. My one request for next season is more Voiello. I could watch an entire show just about him.
Did you see the image of Jesus in the wispy clouds when Lennie looked up to the sky?
absolutely, awesome shot!
Diane I thought it was the Blessed Mother Mary in the clouds! But it could have been Jesus! God bless the clouds!
Diane It was the Madonna
It was Mary as Our Lady of Grace.
you recognize Jesus? Have you seen Him before? Cool
I had no idea what to expect from this show but it really did turn out amazing. Definitely gives you a lot to think about. Thank you for doing these reviews! did u know that Sorrentino was orphan from the Age of Seventeen?
I did not but that is an interesting biographical detail that clearly had an influence on the script. I hope he's hard at work writing season 2.
I recently discovered this show and watched 3 times on HBO. It's so beautiful the story line, the writing, scripts and most characters are loveable even Vioelle.
It's a pitty in my opinion that the second season went different direction and left me uneasy.
It was great. I had to binge it in 2 days. So beautiful.
Honeslty one do the best series I’ve ever seen!
outstanding review GEEKIN! thanks!
Thanks, Joe! Sorry to see the season end but it has been an awesome ride.
Have you watched "The great beauty " by Sorrentino?
I have. Outstanding movie. I enjoyed his film 'Youth' as well. I need to check out his earlier work.
geekin.nyc please watch "l'uomo in più" (Google it), I don't know if there are English subs or not but if they do you're in for a ride, it's Sorrentino's first work and it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

As long as Paolo Sorrentino is involved, I'm sure we'll get something special but I'll be a very sad fan if Jude Law does not return.
If it gets really bad, it doesn't matter. Season 1 stands tall, whatever follows. Personally i wish they stop at this point and give it additional weight by not "milking" it and leaving some mistery.
Totally agree with you, I am going to subscribe to your page for you to please let us know if their will be a season 2
I'll be checking for any news related to Paolo Sorrentino on a regular basis.
What a show, so glad I got around to this. Enjoyed your review! I strongly, strongly recommend The Leftovers, nothing quite like it anywhere, excellently walks a tight rope between the supernatural and reality.
Thanks Pedro! I'm definitely planning on getting caught up on The Leftovers before Season 3. I hear Season 2 was absolutely incredible.
geekin.nyc Basically, Season 1 learnt from the problems of Lost, and Season 2 perfected it. You're in for a great emotional ride.
So, in light of them putting "The young Pope" followed by "THE END" isn't it quite possible that all the talk about a possible season 2 was misinformation so people wouldn't know that it was going to end after 10 episodes? Could be but Sorrentino has gone on record a few times that he is writing season 2. As to when we might see it, anyone's guess is as good as mine.
You are probably right, but I am so used to GOT using disinformation, I consider it the norm for HBO productions.

You have a point but if Paolo Sorrentino thinks he has enough material and ideas for another season, I'll be eagerly looking forward to it.
@LeisaAs much as I would selfishly like to enjoy another season, I do agree with you.

This episode was wonderful, it made me cry and laugh.

i wish we would of found out why the kangaroo died :(
indeed, we all miss the kangaroo.
I thought those people standing in his garden naked with blood on their chest killed him and painted the letters on their chest with his blood.
The poor creature surely was killed by the bare breasted female protesters, calling themselves Femen. In reality, they got famous protesting bare breasted against Putin.
I really enjoyed this show!
Same. One of the best I've seen.

I think you could absolutely be right. That's the only major plot line that was not totally resolved.
I thought he died? I thought the image of jesus in the clouds was the hint that he was dead and rose to heaven? How could there be a sequel after that?
I can only say that I've read reports that Sorrentino is at work writing season 2. As to what direction he'll take it, only he can say.
Lawrence Lipman that was actually the Madonna, not Jesus.
Just wish they would make 1 more
