    Hello Container Guy
    What cutting wheel do you recommend we buy for cutting the openings? I purchased two vents with bug screens along with your roof vent and skylight so I will be cutting holes on the sides and top of the container.
    Secondly, what is the sealant you recommend?
    Finally, what pop rivot tool do you recommend I purchase for this install?
    thanks!

    • @TheContainerGuyTV
      @TheContainerGuyTV  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Matthew. Thank you very much for the support.
      1) An 0.045" thickness cutting wheel is best. Don't buy poor quality or you will fight with it.
      2) Sealant - I'm not an expert on this but we've had best luck with a UV resistant 100% silicone (meant for windows & doors). Acrylic caulking will crack with movement, in extreme heat, or with long exposure to the sun. You should keep an eye on the sealant's condition over similar intervals that you would inspect an RV.
      3) If only for this install, a good hand tool is fine. If you plan to use it in the future, an air tool is quicker but requires an air compressor. The best (right now) is the Milwaukee 12v but it is too expensive to purchase for a one time requirement.

    We installed a few con-vents throughout our 720 sq ft container home but are having issues with condensation in the vent openings. The home is insulated with several inches of closed cell spray foam and we’re heating the house with a wood stove. We tried adding some rock wool into the openings to help reduce the temp change between outside and inside but are still getting moisture. We’re not sure if we switch to a plastic vent if that would solve the issue or if we should just remove the vents and rely on cracking the windows to help with ventilation. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

    • @TheContainerGuyTV
      @TheContainerGuyTV  Рік тому +1

      Don't use passive vents on a closed cell spray foamed container. They will condensate and cause issues. If you can somehow use them as the intake and exhaust to an ERV or HRV, that is best to control humidity. Otherwise, windows are best because you can control the environment. There is no such thing as a passive ventilation system that works 365 days/year.

    Im purchasing a 20ft container and turning it into a camp. It will be in a very hot and hummid climate in louisiana. It will be lived in for maybe 3 months out of the year (checked on periodically the rest). Would thess vents be sufficient? And two rookie questions. Would i install the vents PRIOR to any insulation/walls? And...im assuming you do NOT want to cover the vents with said ventilation/walls. Correct? Thanks in advance.

  • @dper1112
    @dper1112 2 роки тому

    Oh yeah, depending where you live, little gnats and flies can easily fit through the larger grill. A fine mesh screen is a reasonable choice in some climates. That being said, you're not installing this kind of vent in a living space, so maybe the gnats and flies are less of a concern.

    Bought two of your container vents with filter. I have a spray foamed 20’ container and building a camp w wood stove. I live in northern Ontario, do you still recommend the vents to be installed in your orientation or even at all? I’d prefer to install but feel the container will be an ice box. Lastly, you provide self tapping screws in your kits along w rivets, what is preferred ? Thanks

    • @TheContainerGuyTV
      @TheContainerGuyTV  Рік тому

      Might better to only install one vent so you have air makeup for the combustion. Use paint filter material between the vent and the bug screen to dampen the air a bit. Can always put a piece of cardboard or something in front of it to dampen further on the really cold days. You also might cook yourself out and want all the ventilation you can get.. will be a bit of trial and error. Start with only 1. Or even better, don't use any vents and install a slider window for complete control..

    I've added 2 windows (openers) and double doors to my 20' container. It has 8 small passive vents up top which I'll likely cover with the hard cell spray foam and put a small extractor vent in the kitchenette. I'm assuming since I live in the Gulf Islands that I don't need your big air vents yes?

    • @jelkehuisman

      One of the reasons to install a high vent and a low vent is that the difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the container will help change out the air in the entire container.

    • @TheContainerGuyTV

      Yup. They'll pretty much go in anything. The hole you cut is 9" wide so measure your corrugations and see if you can land on outside corrugations where the mounting flanges are. They are 1" wide. Doesn't have to be perfect. Just silicone everything up good.

    So I have a question. Im getting a 40 container. Has about 1” of spray foam. I’m here in west TN. I’m going to live in it. My thought on the vents is would your heat or ac escape. Trying to keep the heat in. Lol. Would I even need the vents. Idk just asking. Thanks

    • @TheContainerGuyTV
      @TheContainerGuyTV  2 роки тому +2

      If you already have spray foam, vents should not be needed. 1" likely isn't enough in SK where we are located but probably sufficient in TN. If you are living in this thing, I assume you at least have a door and likely have at least 1 window. Architects have a formula for passive air exchange using X amount of door openings per day plus X amount of windows over X amount of square feet. You should be fine and not need mechanical air exchange. If you feel you do then a small apartment sized HRV unit would be a better way to go vs straight venting so you don't lose all your precious heat.

    • @TheContainerGuyTV
      @TheContainerGuyTV  2 роки тому +1

      @@DonnieIngram Yes. If you're introducing water (humidity) into the container and need to control the exact humidity level, then an HRV is 100% required. You will have to size the unit according to your situation and geographic region. The HRV will condensate - believe it isn't acidic and could be reused for watering. You may also need a make-up heat source in the winter if your grow lights don't put out enough BTUs. LEDs are pretty efficient nowadays..
