  • 10 Cloverfield Lane is out next week so I'm coming at you with a better monster movie! Most of the critics were right about this one, but some gave Godzilla a hard time, so this is why they're wrong. Here's everything right with Godzilla.

You forgot a win: the way they shot the movie where the camera is at around the same height as a person making Godzilla and the MUTO's look bigger and much more powerful. I felt like I was actually witnessing every scene with the monsters in them.

Additional win: The movie does a good job presently the MUTOs subtly as sympathetic antagonists and makes them feel like real animals. We see them cuddling each other and during the fights there is lots of intimidation and defensive poses. Plus, these two rely as a team in battle, with the female acting as the main brute force and the male distracting the opponent. In fact, the reason they ended up losing the final battle was because tgey got seperated once the female MUTO got distracted by her nest being destroyed and even stopped for a while to mourn the death of her unborn babies. This puts a little bit of tragedy into their story. They were fighting together, but they died seperated.

There were four points at which the theater erupted in cheers for this movie. Godzilla's revealing roar, the first wind up for the atomic breath, the Kiss of Death, and Godzilla getting up at the end. Personally I was bouncing up and down like a hyperactive kid when I saw that bright blue glow come over Ford's face. I KNEW that it was about to happen and the payoff after all the build up was glorious. Just seeing that happen when the 98 version left it out. Oh man it just filled me up with glee. If your movie does that in the theater you KNOW it's a good movie.

He learned his lesson from the last time he appeared in court in '98... That's why he avoids collateral damage where he can in this one. One thing about Godzilla that has been constant since the 70s: He is a hero. A destructive one, but a hero.

    • @Godzilla1282
      @Godzilla1282 8 років тому +9

Actually, Godzilla stopped being a straight up hero in the 70s with the release of Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1975. The Heisei series depicted him more as a force of nature neither good nor evil. It just so happened that every time he would defeat a monster in the Heisei series he would be doing humanity a favor (Spacegodzilla, Ghidorah, Destroyah). Pretty much every plot in ever Godzilla movie since The Return of Godzilla in 1984 has been built off of the idea that humanity need to stop Godzilla. He's just too powerful for us to do anything about and then humans end up relying on him to save their butts when a threat appears that actually has humanity in it's sights to destroy

    • @Godzilla1282
      @Godzilla1282 8 років тому

***** In the showa series yes which is not what I'm talking about. I'm referring to the Heisei series at the moment. It could be argued they saved him in vs King Ghidorah but to be honest Godzilla has taken bigger beatings and still one the fight than in the way that fight was going. He also had help in vs Spacegodzilla but the end of that fight clearly showed that Godzilla was on another level that the Moguera mech or Spacegodzilla himself when he finally unleashes his red spiral ray and obliterates both in a few blasts

The original Godzilla was an allegory for the devastation Japan suffered as a result of the atom bomb. Overtime, he became friendlier. (Especially when he, Mothra, and Rodan originally drove Ghidorah back to space.) In the original, Serizawa was the one to put an end to Godzilla. It's an interesting take to have him treat Godzilla as a savior, as well as have him discuss the atom bomb itself.

I like they showed us as little as possible in a monster film. "What do humans fear?" "What can not be seen." Minimalistic view of them, showing it shaking, through small openings, perspectives of humans and on small screens in the film makes them more not only scary but also believable.

I agree that the less you see of the monster the more build up and scarier they are but the thing that this movie does is that it tugs WAAAAAAY too much on that string. If I were to tie a tenner note on a fishing line and I moved it everytime you tried to get it, for the first 10 mins maybe you would try and chase it. But after say 30 mins you just don't care anymore and go home. That was this movies problem, by the end I was so bored and impatient that I couldn't care, never mind the fact that the last big fight is covered in smoke. I want to see this iconic monster fight in the glorious CGI and the masterful cinematography, not be going "Is that him or is that just a giant smoke ball?"

In film there is a place for realism and there is a place for fiction to take hold.
Do you really wanna watch Thor with some twat behind you going "The nordic gods never existed!! This isn't realistic" all the time?
This is kinda like the trope "Rule Of Cool" where if an action or setting is really cool and awesome, the viewer can allow their suspension of disbelief to stretch a little just because whats on screen is really cool!!
I know that Captain Jack Sparrow would not be able to do all those stunts on ships simply by cutting a sail line, but the result is so satisfying and awesome to watch that it doesn't really matter if its realistic. As long as it matches the tone and the broad limits of the movies universe, certain rules of realism can be bent a little.

Also, to answer your question: "Is this Godzilla?" As a lifelong fan, I'd say yes. Yes this is Godzilla. It brings back the fun of some of the older incarnations of Godzilla, battling it out with other monsters. He's really shown off as a force of nature in this movie, like in Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) and other films from the Showa era. It takes itself really seriously, it doesn't have the camp of the later Showa films. It does all this really well. With inventive new enemy monsters, a cinematic universe that ties in with the new Kong, will include a rematch of Kong and Godzilla, AND bring back classic monsters such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, I'd say this flick was a good opening to that, and reintroduced the character in a faithful way. Was it the dark, gritty nuclear warning of the 1954 film? No. It wasn't like the original. But it certainly WAS a faithful American adaptation of Godzilla. All of Godzilla's trademarks were present and updated. He was a huge, powerful monster. He LOOKED like Godzilla! He looked like an updated Godzilla! He wasn't a giant Velociraptor running around like in 1998. He was GODZILLA! He had his trademark roar and atomic breath! He battled other giant monsters and was overall a badass kaiju! In my opinion MUCH better than the 1998 Godzilla, which, while a good monster flick, was NOT a good Godzilla. None of his characteristics were there. Tristar was interested in the name, not the character. With Legendary, you could tell that they had a love for what made Godzilla great. They treated the character with respect, and honored the older incarnations while updating it for modern American audiences.

But even before all that as soon as cgi really became a thing a remake of King Kong vs godzilla was one of the things movie fans wanted to see.
I'm not totally sure but I think when this releases all the main vs projects we used to talk about in elematary school has come true.. Freddy vs Jason, Alien vs Predator, Batman vs Superman and now Kong vs godzilla.. (though technically it already existed in the 90s but we wanted a new one) really only other one I can think of that's left to do is Robocop vs Terminator.. And in 10, 15 years Avengers vs Justice League (if they try that will never leave development hell🤣 unless Disney buys Warner bros)

***** I get that, but it just qualifies the original statement to make it seem more rational. I suppose I'm just being pedantic about it. The OP didn't make any conditional claims; he (or she) simply said that they wouldn't spend any money to see something they didn't like. Not that they *might* not like, or *probably* wouldn't like, or were almost *certain* they wouldn't like. They unequivocally said "didn't like," an illogical descriptor if they didn't actually see the movie.
Like I said, though, I'm likely just being pedantic. This sort of thing reminds me of the protests against "The Last Temptation of Christ" by folks who, of course, had never actually seen the thing. That sort of nonsense irks me no end.

I can't claim to have seen any Godzilla films outside of the 1954 original, but from what I read about the other movies I can take an educated guess and say that there weren't any other moments like this in the franchise: Godzilla actually acknowledging an individual human rather than addressing them as a collective. I can't entirely say why I like it (though the way it was shot to once again provide the pure size of Godzilla from a human perspective may be part of it), but it felt like such an epic moment for me.

Although this movie certainly could have used more monster fighting, what it had was pretty good. Also gotta love how some people treat all the older movies like the holy grail, when really they weren't. The only thing that could possibly make half the baby godzilla movies more 'godzilla' than this is the fact that they were made in japan.

I honestly loved this movie, like Cinema Win’s said the cut always are what for me made the last fight better. If you got fight scenes every time the last fight wouldn’t be as impactful. But yeah the older movies weren’t as good (I mean some of them were made in the 80’s and 90’s, so cgi and adaptations wouldn’t be that good)

@@tylergarrett7572 Yeah it seems that the "Fans" forgot about the movie that started it all. This movie is the closest thing we have to the original in the monsterverse, but "fans" seems really not to care about the original or most of the old movies, they just wants mindless monster brawl and CGI version of overused characters because "that's godzilla".
I'm sure if Honda was still alive, he would prefer this movie over kotm or Gvk because it's very similar to his filmaking style:the monsters are more like animals, trying to stay "realistic", build the suspense... Take Terror of mechagodzilla wich was his last godzilla movie, it's dark, slow paced, and godzilla dosn't show up a lot, he also fights two monsters alone in that movie, yet like G14 it's considered by fans to be the lesser one out of the "duology" compared to the other more action packed and colorful movie (Godzilla vs mechagodzilla/ king of the monsters)
And it doesn't mean the others are bad, but it seems a mojority of the fandom especially monsterverse fans seems to forget Godzilla isn't just about action and easter eggs, and that it's not because a movie has mechagodzilla in it that it's a perfect movie.

@@fives5555arc I agree. Although I do think godzilla could have had a minute or two more screentime, this movie is my favorite from the monsterverse. It's hard to talk to some of the monsterverse fans who think cramming in screentime and fan service makes a good movie. I feel like the newer installments are just piggybacking off of the cheesy showa era, where it has little to no storyline, not so great acting, and just tons of fights. Although most people like to see the fights, we need a even balance of everything. I hope if the monsterverse continues, they work on putting buildup into the movies, and give it a more serious tone.

You are a Star Trek fan, and even though the new Star Trek movies are not considered 'actual Star Trek' by the fans (like you said) but you still enjoyed them and gave them their own win episodes. So please, as a Godzilla fan, let me give you the wins from a Godzilla fan's pov. I will have to be using your vid though for reference to make my point. Let's do this, I give to you- *Everything Great About Godzilla, Fan Bonus Round!* BEGIN:
0:12 I love how the credits actually have the black outs like they're covering something up. Look hard enough you can still find Toho's mark. *Ding!* *Ding!* 0:17 Again the skeleton. Godzilla is part of a much bigger world we don't know about. If this skeleton is from a Godzilla then what was that Godzilla to the one in the movie? A parent? A mate? Might explain Godzilla's son.*Ding!**Ding!**Ding!* 1:16 I got to say, like everyone else I thought Bryan Cranston was talking about Godzilla knocking us back to the stone age from the trailer, way to bury the needle on the Mutos Hollywood.*Ding!* 1:44 See how the Muto stomps his arms around getting out of that cocoon? I know that's what I would be doing, establishing my balance and shaking all the pins and needles out of myself. *Ding!* 1:50 All those metal cables running above the Muto, I love that. At least they tried to prepare for it if the Muto ever broke out. *Ding!* And even if they didn't and did it for a completely unrelated reason if still looks really cool in my opinion. *Ding!* 1:56 I got to say the Muto's design is pretty original. I know some people compare it to Cloverfield but Cloverfield has fingers, Mutos aint got fingers. *Ding!* 2:00 Bold move to make it fly instead of just making it run everywhere like the female. *Ding!*
Making a couple of indents so it's not just one big paragraph and easier for everyone to read. If you made it this far, then you yourself are a win.*Ding!* 2:09 I know you took a win off for killing this guy off but he was just the hook for this movie. A way to lure in the non Godzilla fans, but in the end you watch a Godzilla movie for the Godzilla, Bryan Cranston is just the frosting on the cake. I don't think I can say anything more about this without pissing off some fanboy so I'll leave it at that. *Ding!* (still here??? good!) 2:12 Dorsal fins? Spikes? Why not both?*Ding!* 2:29 Okay, so this monster found the nuclear sub in the sea, dragged it to the island and just started to nom nom nom away at it to do it in a safe environment (you know Godzilla would find him way too easily in the sea)? That's a win! *Ding!* 2:39 He's right. EMP blasts, not every monster fights with that and I think it's a bold choice. *Ding!* 2:47 Godzilla visible underwater, that is all. *Ding!* 3:00 The train is speeding TOWARDS the monster, there is no way that is not terrifying!! *Ding!* 3:18 Now even though I am a Godzilla fan, my elder sister is a nefarious Godzilla hater, which is way I keep her away from this movie. And while the feet sound like something she would complain about I love how they carry weight with them and aren't arched like the 1998 Zilla. *Ding!* 3:31 When both CinemaWins AND Sins agree that the entrance is epic, that's a double win! *Ding!**Ding!*
Now seems like an appropriate time for and indent break. Still with me? I hope so. 3:36 I do admit, I wanted more Kaiju Kombat but these monsters basically have a hit and run strategy they stick to when going up against Godzilla because let's face it, they know one on one Godzilla would probably kill them. So that is a knowing-not-to-bite-off-more-than-you-can-chew win. *Ding!* Also, Male Muto needs to meet up with it's mate and hasn't the time for a fight to the death. *Ding!* 4:23 Wait a second, is that Muto mimicking the sounds from the walkie talkie? That is awesome!!*Ding!* 4:32 Now you see THIS is what happens with Godzilla on a bridge. He doesn't get stuck! He doesn't go on top of it! And he certainly doesn't die from -BLEEPING-
JETS!!!*Ding!**Ding!**Ding!** 4:53 Yeah, I'm saying it. Still a better love story than Twilight. I mean just look at how their eyes light TOWARDS each other! *Ding!***5:03** Actually I got to take a win OFF here, the military really should have known better than to fight Godzilla (and his foes) with nukes. Godzilla feeds off radiation, specifically the nuclear type. *Gind!* When he isn't using radiation for sustenance though he has been known for eating whales, giant squids, and even dinosaurs if he can find them. That's right, he aint no tuna head. (The more you know...) 5:05 That's what we're all saying! *Ding!* 5:42 Oh don't mind us, we're just fighting to death over here! Don't get in our way and you'll be fine. *Ding!*5: 46 Tail win! *Ding!* 5:47 The lightning flashing, revealing Godzilla like he was a true god of destruction. *Ding!* 5:50 That roar is all types of wins and nobody can convince me otherwise! A Godzilla roar is epic, signature, iconic, memorable, and any argument against is it is invalid. Because I don't care what you say, you can't forget this. *Ding!**Ding!**Ding!* 5:59 Oh -BLEEP-, she already laid the eggs! *Ding!*
Time for another indent break. Hope I haven't scared you off yet. 6:05 You see? Ganging up on Godzilla is the only way they have a fighting chance.*Ding!* 6:14 As a kid I always used to say if Godzilla's glow could be seen from his spikes then why start at the back instead of the tail where his spikes start? Thank you Hollywood for addressing that for me! *Ding!* 6:19 The atomic breath of Godzila is always iconic and boy does this live up to it!!*Ding!* It's not a laser exactly but it does show Big G is more than just a beast-brawler. *Ding!* 6:28 See that? That is Godzilla's "I am going to kill you!!" face! And every Godzilla needs to acquire one at some point! *Ding!* 6:31 I gotta Win that one too. Godzilla's tail has been a well known club in the past and it's nice to see the tradition carrying on. *Ding!* 6:38 This scene is so epic it made our CinemaWins guy pass out from literally too much awesomeness! And he's right to do so! *Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!**Ding!* Actually I don't think I can Win it as many times as CinemaWins, feels redundant now! *Gind!* HEY GIVE THAT BACK, INTERNET!! 6:52 Roar of Triumph!! *Ding!* 6:57 He's right! To us Godzilla fans he's always been cool, this movie just made it a little more obvious to those who were NOT Godzilla fans! *Ding!*
Still with me? We're almost done! 7:03 I wouldn't say that's Godzilla's 'Walk of Shame', I like to think he's just feeling bloated from Nuclear radiation.*Ding!* 7:10 Great ending indeed. What better way to end a Godzilla film then to return him to the sea? *Ding!*
Final thoughts: I know some people were expecting this to be a remake of the OG black & white Godzilla movie, but hey, that's Shin (or Resurgence) Godzilla is for.*Ding!* Me? I just wanted an American Godzilla movie which was a step up from the 1998 movie, and I gotta say-mission accomplished! *Ding!* I know some are still a fan of that movie but I have to say if anything I went easy on that thing in this. Moving on, having this be an actual monster rumble was the icing on the cake for me! *Ding!* I know a lot of fans were expecting him to be our enemy this time around but the fact is he wasn't here for us this time. We weren't the ones who -BLEEPED- up this time, the Mutos were... by procreating... and wrecking everything... and- YOU GET MY POINT! *Ding!* Maybe next time. *Ding!* I knew this movie was branching out to a new audience and I decided I wouldn't let any negative opinions they have change my judging of this movie no matter what. Imagine my surprise when I saw some people in the theater actually standing up and cheering when Godzilla delivered his kiss of death. And when the credits rolled it even got a standing ovation!! *Ding!**Ding!**Ding!* Like I said before, some wanted Big G to be our enemy in this and not our hero; but here's some food for thought on this: All those city citizens are probably going to die from Godzilla's background radiation. *Ding!* Ultimately my fear for this movie was that it wouldn't be remembered fondly of in the test of time. Back in 1998 everyone loved that Godzilla movie but now everyone's letting it have it. However, this time around I have more faith for this movie because when the worst criticism is "Needs more Godzilla" then that makes me think it will be okay in the long run.*Ding!* We might just get our wish in the sequel. I mean, I want to see what this universe's KIng Ghidorah and Rodan look like. Don't you? *Ding!* All in all I guess it depends on if you want to give this Godzilla a chance. I think we'll be rewarded for it... unless he of course he loses to King Kong again. In which case I will bare the full force of my Godzilla Fanboy Fangs. Time for the Tally-

While kong shows emotion in his relationship with humans, godzilla doesn't because he either hates them or don't care aboout them, it doesn't mean he dosn't have a personnality, the son of godzilla helps us to see a softer side to the character while not change what distinguish him. Is the design hurrendous? YES, but he is still an underrated character with lots of potential that if done right, could be more compelling than any mothra, ghidorah or destroyah.

What a lot of people don't seem to realize or seem to ignore is that the way Godzilla 2014 was done is really how a majority of Godzilla films tend to be outside of later and/or finale films (especially bombastic ones like Godzilla: Final Wars), especially the first one, which this film obviously pays plenty of homage to, and Godzilla actually showed up *less* in the original "Gojira" film than he did in this film (IIRC, something like a minute more in this film than the original).

Blind optimism to obvious problems with film doesn't make a good channel.

I just found your channel and I freaking love what you do, man! It'd be awesome if you did King Kong (2005) and Rise & Dawn of the Planet of the Apes sometime in the future. Both have new movies in production so it'd be awesome to see some love given to them while the hype for the new movies is building!

This was definitely one of my favorite Godzilla adaptations ever, and it had me grinning from ear to ear the entire time from Godzilla's reveal onward. I love Godzilla, and this movie made him feel huge and powerful and totally made up for the shit show we were given in 1998/1999. And as you said, Brian Cranston is ALWAYS a win.

How did you not mention the scene where the MUTO realizes that the main character blew up its eggs, and he gets saved by Godzilla himself? That alone is worth at least two more wins!

AT LONG LAST!!!! CinemaSINS made me want to gouge my eyes and ears out with how bad they bashed films. You are a freaking legend!!! Finally, someone who doesn't hate the new Godzilla and a phenomenal movie for 2014. I'm subscriber number 630.

+JW_Gojifan Cinemasins doesn't hate the Godzilla film. He does the sins for fun and for entertainment. You know when he actually hates a film because he'll basically say so throughout the sins. But he enjoyed the Godzilla film quite thoroughly.

But the jokes were bad and they really ticked me off. I left a comment about how they were wrong to judge the movie like they did and I got 500 hate comments.

That's the nature of the internet. When you stand against the grain, EVERYONE who stands with the grain will pour the hate on you.
Cinemasins videos are purely for entertainment purposes, and he does what he does because it's fun and other people enjoy it too (proven by his 5.5 million subscribers).
If what he does ticks you off then you need to stop watching his videos and find something you enjoy watching, because he's not going to change his style for you.
I watched his Godzilla 2014 sins video and laughed my ass off at how silly the sins were and hearing how much he loved Godzilla in the film when he was there. It was obvious he enjoyed the film and has a lot of love for Godzilla. He was just one of the fans who was disappointed that Cranston was killed off and didn't care for Ford or his journey. That's all.

Oh I stopped watching them after they posted their Jurassic World video. That was the final straw. I commented and left and never went back.
I honestly do not see how people can find that kind of entertainment funny. What you see as comedy, I saw as perverts wanting lap dances all the time and nitpicking the tiniest, most obscure thing they could find.
I don't hate the guys who made the channel, I just hate the channel itself. It's like with critics, I stopped with them and I feel so much better.
