The breed began way back in 1789 at Babolna, Hungary.
The breed acquired the “Shagya” name from a Bedouin stallion named Shagya, born in 1830.
Shagya was raised by the Bani Saher tribe in Syria before being obtained by the Hapsburg monarchy in 1836 to stand at stud in Babolna. Every Shagya-Arabian breeding line since then carries his DNA.
The goal was an ambitious one: a horse that combined athleticism, hardiness, elegance, and devotion to its rider.
This IS speedy, intrepid, and friendly sport horse, equally comfortable clearing jumps, Endurance racing, and wowing judges in the Dressage ring.
The Shagia CUP in Romania has been held annually since 2016.
This breed is recognized as a riding horse, and is also driven in harness. It was a hardy cavalry horse and is now popular in sport horse disciplines such as dressage, eventing and endurance riding.
Today it is most often seen in the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, the former Yugoslavian countries, Poland, Germany, and Hungary, but has been exported to other nations and is bred around the world. A purebred Shagya Arabian today has bloodlines that can be traced in all lines to the stud books of Rădăuți, Babolna, and Topolcianky. The breed is considered by some to be a subtype of Arabian horse, but due to the presence of a small amount of non-Arabian breeding others consider it to be an Anglo-Arabian or a partbred Arabian.
The 2006 FEI Endurance World Champion was a Shagya gelding bred at Babolna.

Shagyas came from the Seglawy Sheifi strain of Desert breds developed by the Bani Sakher.. Shagya himself was reportedly a bit over 15.2 hands tall. More than likely that is band height
wherein the tape is not just taken to the top of the withers but rather follows the curve of the horses heart girth- thus giving a slightly longer length and making it seem like the horse is taller than they really are.
