Subaru WRX Spark Plug Gap Was WAY TOO BIG

- The misfire counts on Zack's Subaru Imprezza WRX just keep climbing! Last night we determined that the coilpacks and plugs need to be changed from under the car, so I called my buddy John and we headed over to his shop to use the lift. When we pulled the spark plugs we found that they were gapped at least .015" over the recommended plug gap.

As a Canadian it made my day when you said, “that’s -3 celsius”! Good work on the repair.
Bro took an all nighter and got a greating from a glorious video
Thanks for the help G!
Always brother! 👊
What I like about NGK or Nippondenso plugs is generally they are correctly gap for most applications. So if you vehicle uses one a NGK plug from the factory then you are almost guaranteed the new NGK will be gapped right. Plus both brands use a protective sleeve in their packaging.
I noticed the autolite plugs I bought for my dads Model A didn't have the protective sleeve so I made sure to gap them
Hoovie is definitely off the boil. Great video!
Was the misfire only at idle?
Hey man, what's going on with the S Type R? Don't give up on it!!!
Back when I was in undergrad and had my '02 WRX Wagon I was living in an apartment complex. After doing a ton of research I decided I didn't feel like tackling the spark plug replacement on an EJ20 in the parking lot... so I took it to an independent shop. Got the car back and it was running really bad. I didn't have the instrumentation to check it, but I was sure it was pulling timing. So I busted out the tools, pulled a plug, and checked the gap. It was WAY off.
In my research I'd seen that the auto parts stores at the time (Autozone, etc) listed the same plug for the WRX as they did for the standard Impreza with a plug gap of 0.044. That's what the shop had put in. The shop wouldn't fess up, so I ended up buying the correct plugs and then swapping them myself in the parking lot. That was a several-hundred dollar mistake. Now I do my plugs myself. It's a pain since I don't have a lift, but at least I know it's getting done with the right parts.
I'd bet that's what happened here as well -- some shop not familiar with Subaru engines sourced Impreza plugs for a WRX.
Thanks for making my cardio less boring lol
Wish hoovie would be so productive
Could it be the spring between sparkplug and coil arking as I have had this before and we a clean it fixed the problem!
I learned my lesson to gap plugs , they don't always come set at your specific cars recommended gap
That's for sure, always check the gap. Especially on turbo cars! 🍻
@@WatchJRGo I saw the EXP in the background in hoovies video, can't wait to see it fixed
Unless there is a tube (cardboard or plastic) to protect the end of the electrode, gaps are usually not set on plugs. Shipping can bang the gaps closed. This is why you should always check the gap. Also, a wire gauge is more accurate.
@@timothyharrison8953 Thanks, I will keep that in mind
Nearly $200,000 worth of Corvettes, nice big shop, a lift, and not a light bulb in the place.
Tom Krause or heat 😂
Where's the exp?! I'm stoked to see what you end up doing with that.
Still at the Wizards shop.
Iowa State just lost. Bummer
Someone did a flat rate tune-up and put in those plugs without checking the gap.
I'd like to see you guys change the plugs on the floor
Snoopy really not all that bad. I changed them in my subbie from the top in 2 hrs.
@@streettosky5983 Yea I know, these guys are spoiled with the lift 🤣
We’d probably just give up 😂😂🤦♂️
If you buy NGK or Denso anything above a platinum they are all pre gapped
Jonathan A bullshit.
This subby is the Perfect LS swap candidate and a northstar swap would be awesome for your fiero
I always liked a supercharged 3800 v6 in a fiero
@@snoopy5736 well there is That option to the 3800 v6 is more reliable however I believe the northstar has a bit more power
@@pnwvibes_ I would agree with that
Please help! First off thanks for the vids. Just changed my spark plugs but now am.worried i may have overtightened one plug ( torque wrench wasnt on lock position so.i kept turning till i realized) and now either the plug socket wont grip or the plug is spinning freely.. Also when i tried to put ignition coil back on the spark plug did not want to insert so i screwed down the igniton coil hoping itd slowly make its way in.. Started up just fine but im wondering what could this cause.. And how could i get my plug out.. Ill be buying a magnetic plug socket and see if that works but should i be driving like this? Nissan alt 05 2.5
Dude if you stripped the screw-thread out of your engine block by over-tightening, which is a common mistake, you need to take the engine out and have the hole re-drilled, and a helicoil put in. Thats probably €1000 in damage :/ I'm sorry bro.
@@cannaroe1213 its okay bro! Luckily this is not the case haha. Funny story actually.. In my spark plug SOCKET there is a rubber piece down inside ( im guessing its purpose is to actually grip the spark plug) well it never came back out with the socket so it stood lodged in there around the spark plug -____-. This was preventing me to grip onto it with the socket afterwards, and from the ignition coil sitting properly. Luckily i caught it 5 days later..............
@@zosorob4559 Ahahaa! xD I only just started learning about car repair myself, and I can completely see myself doing this too! Good one to watch out for :) Yeah i guess that's just a few mm of rubber, a hard thing to tell is in the way when you're trying to put a rubber ignition coil on top! Sometimes I think they don't build cars to be easy to fix ;-) All the best out there man!
My gap on my 04 wrx was at 0.95. Was breaking up under boost. Put new ones in at 0.26
mongoloid lmfao 0.95 bruh thats absurd
spiddykilla the plug gaps were looser then paris hilton on a friday night
I'm chasing this problem now. Going to regap my plugs too after watching this.
2hrs+ on a bg9 outback ej25d going down through the top
Yeah and Aussie liberty(legacy everywhere else in the world)wagons
Needs a new exhaust
What kind of Police Radar is that ??
Uniden R3, this was covered on the last video really well.
