Great talk. Thank you for this. Very few parents realize what it is to raise children of colour in the western culture. It goes so much further than just books: CLOTHES! arts crafts materials, school backpack...the list is endless. The whole retail industry, the big brands, big supermarket, should finally address the issue. it's about time
Working on some things for the children's lit class that I am teaching this summer, and I found this gem! This is one of the best TED talks I've ever watched--and I've watched a lot! This is very timely and Ms. Welch is funny, brilliant, and inspirational. Best 16 minutes of my day.
Beautifully done. Thank you so much for this! I'm currently creating a training for early childhood educators on how to incorporate really good multicultural and diverse literature into their classrooms. This was a great help!
Cheers for this, I been tryin to find out about "how do preschoolers develop reading skills?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Eanmanter Straightforward Equalizer - (search on google ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to teach your child to read without the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my friend got great success with it.
This is such an issue and there are so many people who do not know about it! Thank you for the great Ted Talk. I'm buying Elevator Magic for my nephew who happens to be a white autistic child. He will love it.
Not criticizing, but Dumboldor's gay and it is never stated what skin color Herminey is. Most people just assume she's white, but there is no evidence.
+Tegan Smith While you're right about Hermione, Dumbledore is a different case. Just like you said with Hermione, it is never explicitly stated what Dumbledore's sexual orientation is. Rowling could have just dedicated one sentence out of those 7 books to do so, but she didn't, and she instead chose to do so in an interview. What she says outside of the text is far less relevant because once the text is out of the author's hands and in the reader's, the author has relinquished his/her control.
Why does this not have more views!!?? She explained this so beautifully and plainly that it's impossible for anymore not to understand.
I agree. I’m glad I found this!
This gave me goosebumps. Thank you for this talk Dr. Welch!

Had to stop watching when she said she loved "Love You Forever". UGH!
Who is Pinocchio targeted for, Italian puppets?
I don't think she knows that Albert Einstein was Jewish... so he is also a minority
