  • Our performance of "Were You There" at the 2011 RIT Newman Spring Concert. Sung entirely a capella by the full choir.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Very beautifully done. But we lay Him in the tomb and leave Him there. This song is incomplete without the last verse. "Were you there WHEN HE ROSE UP FROM THE GRAVE?!"

Hi Paul, take your point but, we sang this in my congregation on a Good Friday, at the end of a dramatic reading of the Gospel - it seemed appropriate to leave it at the end of verse 3 in anticipation of Easter Sunday (although we did follow it with a nod to the possibility of resurrection with Mark's Gospel's original ending: an empty tomb...no body, no appearance of Jesus, frightened women fleeing bewildered. The ultimate cliff-hanger...watch this space!!

Paul Thompson Hi Paul - I think Greek means "on the third day", not three whole days. So Friday is first, Saturday second and Sunday is the
      third.

Simon Pieman You "think"? Thinking is a pretty good trick if you can do it. You are simply swallowing what you have always been told without thinking at all, and you therefore believe a lie. Three days means three days. Three nights means three nights. You might be surprised at how honest research and study will change what you "think."

Thank you for posting. This is just what I wanted to hear. Reminds me of when my choir did this song a couple years ago. I think it had a bit of a different arrangement, but this is great nonetheless.

Beware of 2:36 - 2:37. The volume reached its cap and can hurt your ears if you're not ready for it. Play this quietly.
    Also, nicely done!
