This was GREAT! I really appreciated the camera's perspective from behind you, inside the plane. It gave me a true sense of how the flight looked and felt to YOU. I discovered Zenith Air and its STOL designs more than 20 years ago and have always wanted to build and fly one. There never seemed to be time. I'm now 71, with serious lumbar-spine problems, so it's too late for me. That made your willingness to share and narrate your flight even more special for me. Please accept my sincere gratitude.
That was absolutely awesome. You are talking and explaining all your moves which is awesome, thank you for posting and sharing your experiences with us fellow pilots. Blessings.
Super! Surprising enough, I briefly spoke to you, at Ona, just about the time this video was made. Commending you on your awesome plane. I had brought my 172 over for the guys to do some adjusting on. Great great video. I'm glad I ran across this, even if it was so many years later.
You are a real pilot. You are one of a vanishing type. A man who actually knows how to fly. A very fun video. excellent job. Thanks for taking the time to make and post.
Спасибо! Как Сам полетал! Вроде и не сложно, глядя со стороны. Я авиамоделист, мечтаю всю жизнь о малой авиации, но у Нас это не доступно простому человеку. Буду Ваши видео смотреть. СПАСИБО!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I remembered what I was looking for, but unable to find, when I was learning to fly the 701 and this is the result. Hopefully I'll get a few more videos up this summer.
Wayne, I recently got the bug for Zenith STOL flying after retiring from the airlines back in 2009. Well, I came upon your video right off, but just now am coming back (after maybe '200 videos viewed') to say ... You, my Friend, did one helluva job with this 'Demo'. Seriously listen to what all these guys are telling you, because it's obvious you don't take yourself 'too serious' ... but you need to feel very Proud of the work you did with this. Wayne .. you are truly the "Chuck Yeager" of Sport STOL flying ! .. Bravo my Friend !!
Thanks so much for the great flight! I have a friend that has a CH701 and while I've never flown with in it I am very fascinated by the plane. I'm a 2500 hour 40 year pilot and I fly a Cessna Hawk XP but the LSA world looks like a whole lot more fun. Again, this was a great flight and you certainly have your plane dialed in and fly it perfectly. Even that second to the last landing you didn't like was really nice with the bumps you had. Thanks so much for the fabulous video. Wish I could fly like you again. Best regards, Lisa
I'm sorry it took me so long to find your video very well done and appreciate all of the dialogue and explanation because that's what really means most to us you live in a beautiful part of the country and you have wonderful property and I appreciate you sharing all of this with us
Well thanks for the kind words greg! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I tried to show folks what the 701 is all about. When I was learning to fly it I really couldn't find anything that was helpful so I tried to pattern the video after that hoping it would be useful.
@@rclaggf4u I appreciate this a great deal because I have high interest in the 750 super duty and I will be attending their demonstration in Sebring in a couple of weeks. I live on the West Coast of Florida in Clearwater. I like their products and the people who make them in the videos they make. I would like very much to provide some videos of my own. One day in the near future and I will try to emulate the best I can, but to a lesser degree, obviously what you have given us here, which means a lot to me personally and I know many, many other people on the Internet.
Great video! You have built a beautiful 701 there. Those approaches to your strip though had me holding my breath! It's like watching old videos of the checkerboard approach into Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport.
Excellent video! Loved seeing the full ride, radio calls, check lists, procedures, and nice music in the background, and on top of it all, a nice flight! Well done Sir!
I love how informative you are- I've been watching videos on these planes and this one is my favorite! Can't wait until we're done building ours so we can fly it... the Skyhawk we have is fun and all, but THIS :D
Excellent video in every way. You should make more! Music at a perfect level, plenty of informative commentary during the flight, and you have a pleasant voice. I've taken this ride about twenty times now.
Hail and good morrow from Central Wyoming! Like some of the others here I wanted to thank you so very much, for taking the time to actually go through what the average pilot would like to see before the flight for this aircraft: going through the specific checklist for this aircraft, and doing the actual tests and confirmations that are so necessary to safe flight! The simple but oh so important tasks are key to knowing about this specific model of aircraft, and I do appreciate you including it, as well as your running commentary on why you are doing what you are doing! Further, allow me to commend you for your choice of music!!! You have no idea how very tired I am of crap, AKA rap, AKA boom boom boom bass, no lyrics, or screaming at the top of their lungs lyrics to where no one can understand what they're saying, and that is if one can stand listening to the noise that they refer to as music! I like hearing the music that I used to hear on the radio in the top 10, back in the day when I was in high school! I'm thinking about the 7:50, but I do love the tandem setup of the 701, but I need at least 500 useful load pounds, and would prefer 600 to 700! I'm your standard porker at 280 lb, so when you add in fuel much less another person, there isn't much room left! Take care and I look forward to seeing more videos from you!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I had many requests from folks asking how the 701 flew so I figured Id just take them along for the ride. Hopefully we will get a few more up later this year, this thing called work and weather keeps getting in the way.
Really enjoyed the video, I have a 701 I built with about 500 hours in it now. Also has a 100 hp Rotax, great little engine. Your numbers pretty much match mine. It's a little flatter here in Dayton, Ohio. Fly safe my friend and CAVU.
That's great info, I have a 80 hp. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 100 hp. The climb rate is much better then mine. I think my decision is made. Great video, thanks for the great comments.
The approach to landing was crazy! Reminds me of my JAARS pilot friends overseas. I love the CH701. I've not flown one but have considerable time in Helio Couriers. Maybe one day I'll get to check out the 701. I did fly the 801 demo aircraft.
Glad I stumbled upon your video! Entertaining, educational and downright fun taking that flight with you. I got a big grin when you said you were going to take off and land once more. I can see why you selected an STOL in your area.
Contrary to popular belief professional pilots conduct their 'flows' from memory then pull out the check list to 'check' their actions. A 'check' list is not a 'do' list ;-).
Wayne, thanks again for comments. I´ll hope fun with Zentih701. I would like to buy a rotax 100hp or an 80hp is fine (second hand), actually, I have only the kit construido. Regards!!
Very good like a flying lesson, 1080 HD full screen like your in the plane, nice approach over all those trees not for faint hearts, music set to the right level too, I have the plans for 750 mulling over the SD
Thanks for the kind words Kevin, glad you enjoyed it. Took me three attempts to get it on the ground the first time I brought it home, now it’s just a walk in the park. I still sit up straight in the seat and pay attention but my heart rate doesn’t shoot up.
It accelerated and ran 10 meters and pulled the stick and the plane had already gone up when it landed, it was the same thing. very good plane for short runways
27:18 - “This time we’ll take the approach coming up from the river... should be a little smoother” 27:20 - (catches a nice lateral wind gust) “Woah!!”
Wayne, this video was great man. I really liked watching you fly your 701, really awesome. I'm in the considering purchasing a CH750 quick built kit or one already built because I don't have much time sometimes. I just love this kind of flying. Could watch for hours. Stop it already with the check list jajajaja!!!.
Thanks Mike! glad you enjoyed it. I absolutely love it. While I enjoy flying about anything I'll take my 701 over anything out there. Its a amazing. It's different and you have to learn how to fly it but once you figure it out you can safely do some pretty crazy stuff. Stay tuned I hope to do another video of some bush flying in the Greenbrier River Valley of Wes Virginia this spring.

Your speed seems to be right in line with what it should be. Don't cut the prop. You can set it for a little less static rpm on the ground and get a better cruise performance. I dint see how you can possibly get more than 65mph at 4200 rpm. I turn 54 to 5500 in cruise burning between 5 and 5.3 GPH and on average indicate 85 mph, depends on density altitude. Im not trying to be cute but just remember form follows function. You cant have something that will take off in 150' and cruise at 150 knots. Every airplane has its aerodynamic wall and the 701 is about 85 MPH.

Would it be possible to have x2 215# people with low fuel and make W/B and if not what is max possible passenger weight for your plane. PS. like your panel. Guess I'm old school.
Very cool and impressive. You sold a HVAC system and installed it for me a few years back and had just built or was almost finished with your plane then. I have the bug to build a kit plane and have been looking online at info. Is how I found your videos. Would love to talk with you about your experience in building and flying a hit.
yes I did, I tried everything, but finally gave up and went back to the original setup. It no longer hits but is very close. I saw a picture where someone did away withe the bell crank on the torque tube and mounted it on its own bracket right above it. I might try that this winter during the inspection.

It's videos like this that keep me coming back to UA-cam. Excellent video, thank you!
You are one of a vanishing
type. A man who actually knows how to fly. A very fun video. excellent job. Thanks for taking the time to make and post.
Well thanks! That’s the best compliment I’ve heard in awhile. I thought I was a real pilot until I started flying the 701. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Great video thanks for sharing, its great that you're explaining all the maneuvers air speed, altitudes its great for us amateurs. Thanks again
That was fun. I watched the altimeter during the three 60 degree turns. I doubt I'm the only one who noticed you NAILED it. Well done!
I just wanted you to know that this is one of the better videos out there, good info, good camera angle and I really enjoyed the flight
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I remembered what I was looking for, but unable to find, when I was learning to fly the 701 and this is the result. Hopefully I'll get a few more videos up this summer.
Wayne Clagg I agree the only video that resembles a check ride great job
good vid and great vibes!!!!!
Great flight...love the music and its just loud enough to enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
I watch this video over and over
I had a 701 and loved it. I felt like I was flying in there with you. Very well done video. Thanks, from Mesa, AZ
Your a great pilot! The 701 is a very good plane. You leave all the stresses of life behind when you take her up.
That's a damn good looking panel, sir!
humble, clear speech, using check lists often. this is a really good video thanks
I envy you guys who get to fly. I dream of learning to fly and get a pilot's license. I live vicariously through you pilots.
Did you ever make it happen?
Just wow ! As for speed, haste is the way of the devil anyway. Good to hear you call out the numbers. That made it more enjoyable all around.

35 - 40 - Rotate - We're airborne! Love it. Great presentation! Really enjoyed that!

. Just started with Hangar 9 as a student. It's good to see another local pilot in the area here on UA-cam. Also loved this video very informative.

What a great video I enjoy every bit of it .
I dig that you use checklists. Very cool.
Great video, I'm close to having my STOL 750 project finished and these videos are a great inspiration for the final push
Excellent video! Loved seeing the full ride, radio calls, check lists, procedures, and nice music in the background, and on top of it all, a nice flight! Well done Sir!
That pond you land over is an eye opener! Very nice video.
Jamming to Boston. Nothing better. Nice little plane too
Awesome video. Really enjoyed it. Property and zenith stol are on my short list.
I enjoyed watching very much! You are a Great Presenter of info on this plane!!!
I love how informative you are- I've been watching videos on these planes and this one is my favorite! Can't wait until we're done building ours so we can fly it... the Skyhawk we have is fun and all, but THIS :D
I liked that you taxied back and used ALL of the available runway. Smart move even for a STOL airplane.
Excellent video in every way. You should make more! Music at a perfect level, plenty of informative commentary during the flight, and you have a pleasant voice. I've taken this ride about twenty times now.
Nice video. Enjoyed the ride (and the tunes).
I love that little crick just prior to touch down!! I'am sure that little airport gets your juices flowin. Good job !
Hail and good morrow from Central Wyoming!

That’s some great flying. Nice aircraft.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks Bill, glad you enjoyed the video.
Very nice! My kind of flying, except down in Central Texas. Hoping to purchase aSTOLENCH 750 soon.
Thanks for the ride!
Mike
Fully loaded instrument panel👏👏👏👏👏
Nice work!
Excellent tunes.

I loved your video, very nicely done. I will be transitioning from Weight Shift Control to Fixed wing and am seriously considering a Zenith 701.
Great video.. Enjoyed the flight.
I enjoyed that, cheers Wayne.
Glad you enjoyed it. I keep saying I am posting more videos soon but weather and work keep getting in the way. Stay tuned. lol.
I did wonder at the beginning if you were gonna pull straight up over the trees! :D Nice aeroplane sir.
I was hoping for that myself
"Pull up, pull up". Reminds me of my car GPS when I make a detour, "make a U turn, make a U turn"!
Great Video and Thank you for showing that you use a "Checklist" and Not Memory.
Contrary to popular belief professional pilots conduct their 'flows' from memory then pull out the check list to 'check' their actions. A 'check' list is not a 'do' list ;-).
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing, and greets from the Netherlands.
Thanks Papa T!

I’m friends with Judge Spears you just built one of these for him...I’m glad I ran across your channel. Great flight enjoyed watching
Beautiful job man!

Mine was, 27hrs in a piper tomahawk back in 1993 in Western Australia, ie flat as a pancake
Nice to see a local flyer posting.
De KC4JNS
Sweet airplane, nice flying!
Nice landing!
Wow that valley approach looks scary. You are a much better pilot that me
Great demonstration
Nice job - good presentation loaded with info.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice flying 👍
Great flight Wayne!
Love your videos. I'm building a 750cruzer and your videos are great motivation. SO.... move videos please!
well hopefully I'll get some new stuff posted this spring. Stay tuned.
Great footage
Thanks for sharing 🏴
Great video 😊
Awesome, great video! This guy would be a great flight instructor.
well thanks. lol.
You're too modest. You are a great pilot and any landing you walk away from is good.
Impressive airplane!
great video! you've got a lot of avionics packed in that small space!
Great Video ! Learned alot !
Excellent video
Absolutely phenomenal.
Nice video. Beautiful plane. Lousy traffic scan!
Thank you sir. Very informative.
It accelerated and ran 10 meters and pulled the stick and the plane had already gone up when it landed, it was the same thing. very good plane for short runways
What an approach - crazy & dangerous 24:00
Great video !
Still love your videos, Wayne!
27:18 - “This time we’ll take the approach coming up from the river... should be a little smoother”
27:20 - (catches a nice lateral wind gust) “Woah!!”
What I like is the crappy FM Radio background music. Wherever you go there is always Radio Ga-Ga!
Please list the airports you visit...tks
So that's the way to properly land on a short runway ! :O
I've been flying only on simulators by far, and was good in smooth landing, but never even tried to land like that this kind of aircraft - stalling just before the touch down :O
I've been doing it on military jets but it was much more challenging I think, as in many cases pulling back on the stick was causing the craft to climb up again and stall to crash if that was a heavy thing like a A-10 Warthog ^^'
Hopefully at fairly low speeds it's much easier to match the right touch down speed to just stick to the ground.
I also enjoyed the flight :) Not many places to go for an engine failure on climb!
You were really threading the needle coming in on your farm runway!
During approach back at your own farm I heard an electric voice warn that : " Caution, terrain ahead!" I didn't know you can get that capability from small LSA cockpits. Pretty cool.
Could you put a small 26inch by 26 inch by 12 inch fold up bike in behind the seats? It is 24 lbs.
yep I believe it would fit just fine.
Hello Wayne
I owner of Zenith 701 with rotax 912s with a prop 3 blade 70in.
I removed the slats and instaled VGs.(less drag)
My issue is the cruise speed, its very slow yet...with 4,200 rpm I get 65mph only!!! more consumption!Do you recommend cut the blade at 68in, 67in, 66in?
What size let me get speed without lost performance on the take off ? what size is the best option? ,
Clear, whatever I will have to adjust the grade at 5,500 rpm
I will thank your answer!!
Your speed seems to be right in line with what it should be. Don't cut the prop. Set the prop pitch for 5500 to 5600 static on the ground (static) and that will give you the maximum performance taking off and climbing.
That was excellent!!
Thks Wayne for comments
Have you considerated removed the slats and putting Vortex generators?
That's a topic that's been discussed for sometime but it's not for me. I'm happy with the slats and use them to adavantge. Also, like I said earlier, it'll cruise at 100 mph indicated in cold weather so just slight nose down pitch change will put it right up to VNE.
Would it be possible to have x2 215# people with low fuel and make W/B and if not what is max possible passenger weight for your plane. PS. like your panel. Guess I'm old school.
Great video, I was considering the 701 but it looks pretty cramped. I’m 6’3 280 lbs, not sure I’d even be able to get in lol.
Very cool and impressive. You sold a HVAC system and installed it for me a few years back and had just built or was almost finished with your plane then. I have the bug to build a kit plane and have been looking online at info. Is how I found your videos. Would love to talk with you about your experience in building and flying a hit.
Did you have any problems with the bell crank hitting the seat back.
yes I did, I tried everything, but finally gave up and went back to the original setup. It no longer hits but is very close. I saw a picture where someone did away withe the bell crank on the torque tube and mounted it on its own bracket right above it. I might try that this winter during the inspection.
I wonder if touch-n-go flying may be thought of as unsociable ? 😀
