In watching the clip about designing the cowl, I also am a fan of the new Pipistrel Panther. A You Tube clip by (I think) one, if not "the" Chief Engineer, explains Pipistrel's design process of the cowling....pretty much a like idea proving Jon's concept. ua-cam.com/video/CpJErVXr9QU/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/8Tbgs8lxNVs/v-deo.html, also Commander 114.115 sort of had this technique.
This is a particularly lovely aircraft, beautiful attention to detail and superb craftsmanship abound. I really like how clean and well organised the engine bay is, and those cowls and engine covers are simply works of the constructor's art. I did notice that this was the absolute best insulated barn/hanger/workshop that I'd ever seen, so when the interviewee mentioned that he was formerly in "the foam business" it became clear why that was. The method of designing and constructing the engine covers was a masterclass is excellent thinking and working with what you've got experience in, and the outcome is simply outstanding. Both Builder-Pilot and the aircraft itself are exceptional.
I agree that Jon's is the best Zenith 701. That cowling is a work of art! Preferring, slick, speedy airframes, I normally have zero interest in these flying jeeps but seeing this super cool brother enjoying his around his own property, I'm quite envious. The Man has great stick and rudder skills too.
She's a beauty. Georgous cowling, worth all the effort, great job! That sound track at the end couldn't be more fitting. Enjoying the channel and content.
@Ken W. Wow! Thank you for the kind and supportive comments. I truly appreciate that. Jon and I really had a lot of fun making these two episodes together and since has been very engaged in our Aviation Community promoting Home Building. Win Win for all of is. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Great job showing and telling, I am next door where you are Etowah tenn great guys in Cleveland . I’ve worked and lived in Cleveland so I know how the guys are great guys went to school there in Cleveland. Great place well thanks great job showing telling well see ya next time see ya by.
Well... stop imagining and try it out! :-) Zenith also offers sort of a "Starter Kit" for the rudder so you can try it out. I recommend it as it is a lot of fun. Worst case you have something to hang on the wall as art work. Thank you so much for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate you.
Thank you shooting video with long quiet relaxed cuts! So many videos cut/cut/cut and, for mechanical enthusiasts who want to build their own planes too, it can be hard to really study the details. Great content. An inspiring 701! Beautiful.
Bryan, I agree with you, this is the "Best Built 701", great job Jon. Bryan, your video is excellent, you tell this story in a most compelling fashion. keep up the fine job! Best Regards, Wayne Whitley
Exceptional masterpiece of work! I suggest he consider adding a small camera to the belly connected to a screen on his panel so he can see ahead when in a steep climb.
I love this plane!! Many many congrats! I would hope you would bring it to OSH 2020. I do own 701 plans and the 350is is the eng. I want. You goter done!
Great explanation on your ramping and funneling effect of your cowling inlets. I understand it complexly and the proof is in you achieved cylinder temperature results. Great job on your airplane build it is more than just pleasing to the eye.
Mike Patey has built....how many aircraft? A bunch for sure. :-) This is a first timer here. Thanks for taking the time to watch and SUBSCRIBE! I really appreciate you. Hang around for PART 2 where Jon goes into more detail of the build and I share his build progress photos.
I'm not throwing shade at Jon...he did a fantastic job that Patey himself would be impressed with. Mike is an experienced engineer and has access to resources most of us dream about. Plus he never sleeps! Lol. Jon did a wonderful job. Its nice to see the difference in a machine like Mike and a dude like the rest of us...and to know we can all have nice planes in the end!
I admire Patey's work. This project was the first time I ever even touched carbon fiber cloth. I went to the EAA composite workshop and studied on how to approach such a project for weeks before I bought the materials. I could easily do it in a few days now. I can't wait to see Draco 2.0! ;)
Zenith has workshops every month at their factory and a big weekend OPEN HOUSE coming up in September if you would like to check it out in person. Thank you so much for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate you.
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel The workshop is fantastic! I went to the factory last summer for the rudder building workshop. Roger and Steve gave a great workshop. I hope to put what I learned those couple days to use soon :)
I'm looking at this Kit because I think I can build it light enough for Sport Pilot plus It's not that far from the KC Metro area.I'm Also looking at Rans Planes as well.I was kind of wanting a tail dragger but this video is selling me on the Zenith tricycle gear plane.
OMG 😱 I LOVE THAT PLANE , BEAUTIFUL !!! I WISH I HAD ONE JUST LIKE IT and he is not even stalling out at that speed ! Good for you young fellow. 👍✝️✌️. IS IT FOR SALE ? OR CAN YOU BUILD ME ONE SON ? THAT IS MY DREAM.
That plane looks like a Pixar talking plane. It only needs eyes & a very famous voice behind it, no? I was looking at the cowl, and thinking " Yeah, shrink wrap the snot outta it- then expanding foam..." Exactly what he did. Great work, sweet EVERYTHING about it. Purdy paint, nice craftmanship- super impressed. Obviously, it gets flown too- hate hangar queens after BIG shows, would rather see mud than Q-tips every time. Great video, great effort to capture what I so wanted to see at Oshkosh- yet ANOTHER subscriber!
What an amazing project far more than I can even dream of doing the God bless him he did a beautiful job he's got an amazing playing just tell him not to bust his buns coming too close to the ground showing off
Anybody who doesn't think farmers aren't smart needs to see this video. This whole story / build is inspirational.
Very Nice. He mentioned nobody else is making a cowl to fit the UL 350. He needs to dig up the mold and start cranking those babies out! $$
Exactly!! He needs to make carbon fiber molds from the existing cowls and start selling!
It is niiice

SWEET STOL CH-701 .... the 701 is my dream plane. I am 70 years old and will probably never do it, but I can dream and your plane is wonderful.
Just build it!
This guy, is exceptionally talented!!! Wow, I like this plane.
This is my favorite type of aviation operation! Tiny little runway hidden in the trees. Thank you for capturing this awesome airplane and air strip

What craftsmanship, well done John

Zenith has a lot of nice designs but the 701 is still king to me. Light and simple. This is a beautiful and useful aircraft. Thanks for featuring it.
You are VERY welcome! Thank you so much for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate you.
Beautiful paint job.
Love that shade of red.
WOW ! SOOOO NICE !
In a word, extraordinary! Wow.
That is a beautiful and amazing airplane! Great job!!! I am sure that is the prettiest Zenith I have ever seen!!
Thank you! I agree..Jon did an excellent job. Thank you for taking the time to watch and SUBSCRIBE I really appreciate it!
3 years ago and still one of the nicest builds I have ever seen.
That UL engine sounds like a much larger large displacement machine - direct drive, low RPM -high torque! Thanks for posting!
You are welcome! Thank you so much for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate you.
Top aircraft and nice paint

Nice rocket ship 🚀 I can’t imagine the pride that goes with building your own plane. Have fun 👍

Wow! Most impressive! I think it definitely deserves the title of Super 701.
Exceptional build Jon! Great job. That cowling is a work of art. I love my CH701. Mine is a Rotax 912ULS. That extra 30HP has to be radical.
Can't get enough of it. It's like my 4th time watching video. To me, people like that make generations thrive!! Great job man.

Showcase for real talent. Very impressive design-build. Not to be overlooked is required patience, impressive skills & simple humbleness.
That’s a great looking 701. It keeps me motivated to finish mine.
That is incredible! And wow! What a gorgeous paint job! I WANT. THAT. PLANE!!!
Fine job....love it...
This guy is a hard core fabricator. So cool.
What a cool guy, thanks for sharing
Very nice aircraft....great job
Am envious
I wish this guy was my neighbour to help me build that plane, so nice. Awesome Job
Very very nice aircraft, I can see the pride n craftsmanship in it . Performance appeared to be strong and sounded great ....hats off to ya brother.
Ferrari red color works great! Nice video.

What a great build. the cowling was a work of art. Looks like huge fun and easy to build and fly.
This guy is super cool
Got to be the prettiest homebilt I've ever seen. Any plans to create a mold from your cowling?
That plane was made like most babies. Late at night. :-)
haha. YES... you NAILED it! :-) Thank you so much for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate you.
Beautiful Plane. Who sings this song in your video?
Phenomenal.
Thank you! Thank you for watching and SUBSCRIBING! I appreciate it!
one of the most beautiful things I've EVER seen
Linda aeronave!
Very nice plane! Mini-draco?
What's that boom extending from the wing? Mid air refueling???
I believe that is Jon's 360 camera mount. :-)
Oh there is another one out there. Scott Ehni in Trinity tx. Xa52. His full custom 701 with a 350is. Along with his turbine 701 !!
Yep, I think Scott has 2 with the 350 engines. There should be 4 flying with these engines so far.
Super701 love the 350 in. Y 750. Scott even has a 701 with a turbine. Has about a 1.5hr range. He says burns fuel like crazy.
All that low altitude flying the the close power lines! Certainly a more daring pilot that me. Does look fun though.

Jon is an ar-tist ... beautiful plane..

Ok who in the hell put wings on Johnny's go-cart...Lol This is awesome. Good Job.
When I think of Zenith Aircraft, the first airplane that comes to my mind is Jon's super 701, he represents Zenith Aircraft as a great ambassador.
What an amazing project far more than I can even dream of doing the God bless him he did a beautiful job he's got an amazing playing just tell him not to bust his buns coming too close to the ground showing off
