Description:
This was a lot of work, took 3 months to go from 19:36 to 19:28.
A very solid run, the biggest single time loss was just a revenant block on map 22.
I still have so many doom runs I need to do, at least this one is out of the way for now :)
Also think I have finally settled on playback\prboom+ settings and recording software settings etc for the video.

You did a number of things that are certainly not possible on at least the version of doom 2 I had. Like propelling yourself UP with rocket blasts. And you got the icon of sin twice on the way up. And you squeezed through things that I tried to squeeze through, spent minutes at a time trying to squeeze through in the 1990s. I'm not sure how much this can be trusted.

holy shit, you're pulling out all the stops for this run....some moves i've never seen before, like in the map Nirvana; i know you could glide through the bars, but that trick with the glide and a rocket launhcer? amaze-balls.... and that fucking "jump" at the end of Chasm (fuck that map with a broken, rusty fork by the way...) that jump at the end of The Living End...and the 3 rockets at the end of Icon of Sin; i knew you could do that, just never seen anyone do it.... i think this run might give your nightmare run a run for it's money.... outstanding job, Zero

17:27 i ve actually never beatin this without using the cheat code to go trough walls, i remember calling my older brother for that code when i was 7, and now even replaying this i couldn't find the exit and stay blocked before you get to that secret wall at 18:04. And you showed me the way

had to watch this again, just because it's fucking ridiculously awesome...that rocket jump/skip in The Inmost Dens (8:13) is one of the craziest jumps I've ever seen (can't believe I didn't mention that in my previous comment) even at 0.25 speed, it's almost too fast to comprehend

At any rate, I tried this myself many times after seeing it in that tool assisted speedrun that did the same thing, and it just doesn't work. Blowing yourself up with the rocket launcher doesn't propel yourself UP, only to the side, and there's no object you can run into at speed that will lift you up. It doesn't work. This must be some doom mod, not the original doom 2.

The fact that this isn't done in the original Doom makes it look so smooth and the tricks are extremely reliable and the glides super fast. I suppose the source port helps a great deal with that because you must have a huge success % for those tricks since they're everywhere. It also makes it a great pleasure to watch, especially for a person like me who doesn't play Doom. Very entertaining to see rocket jumps in a game where you can't even rocket jump :D
I also appreciated the planning that must have gone into this as well (be it by you or the community). Having only seen Looper's run previously the route is in several places quite a bit different. Very solid.

This was done in Competition Doom, a source port with physics faithful to the original game. The video you see here is the result of a demo played in prBoom, a port that supports high resolutions and higher framerates.
I am by no means a doom expert - far from it, but as it was explained to me by my friends who do play Doom there were some things that make this port easier to use for tricks. Maybe it was smoother due to higher fps or something - can't remember the specifics but there was a bunch of stuff. Maybe someone with Doom experience can list the differences between different ports. In any case I'm not trying to berate the run, it was very entertaining and definitely worth the watch.

You are right, there are ports that have some things that could make a run easier. However, as I already mentioned, this was done in Competition Doom, a port faithful to the original game. In fact, that port is based on Chocolate Doom, a port whose pretty much only difference with the original game is that it runs on Windows instead of DOS.
OK - sorry for doubting you. I got told that this port in specific was easier but I stand corrected :)

I remember all these maps! Crept through them really slowly and carefully on UV many, many years ago. Some of the ones towards the end were a real slog, it felt like the level designers ran out of ideas. Obviously I should just have been glitching through narrow spaces, hitting switches through walls and rocket-jumping my way through, seems obvious now! :oP

how did u get the elevator to come down again while you were on top of it in level 30 without pushing the switch again? I though it only came down for you after you push the switch for it. Amazing run! Im still playing this game since it 1st came out on pc n think maybe i should speed run it just for fun. Doom be the 1st game i ever fell in love with, ever. Love what you do man!

Around 17:15. What the hell man? How did you make that Arch-vile don't destroy you? Was the little red key pillar something special? 10% Health per attack... what...?
This is a known glitch with the Doom engine.
How does it work?
I don't think so. The Arch-Vile attack dealed 10% dmg to health AND armor equally, and the armor was at 40%, that would make at leats 45 dmg points to player. But, as Matthias said up there, seems to be a glitch.
If you're against a wall (or enemy maybe) then the Arch-Vile attack does less damage.
The arch-vile will do minimal damage as long as you are behind partial cover.

I'm curious what other Doom runs you have in mind and if you're going to ever return to DOOM 2016? I remember you said the game was too easy but curious how you feel about the new difficulty/AI and arcade mode. I saw that you had one of the top spots on Argent D'Nur for arcade mode. I think the game mode is absolutely brilliant, I have played it almost non-stop since it's release. To me, it is a lot like speed running; tweeking/experimenting with new strats and slowly perfecting certain areas. It would be awesome to see you run some arcade mode.
Arcade mode was quite fun, not sure if I'll record any videos for it though. In order to get a really good score you'd need to kill everything with plasma stun + headshot with shotgun and keep the medal chain going for as long as possible, which means every level takes so much time. I might give it a try again some day.
This I know, I have 12 of the 13 #1 spots on PS4 ;)
I really hope you do put some arcade mode runs in and post some vids of it, I look forward to whatever runs you do next regardless.

He took so little damage from the arch vile shots at 17:15. Is there a technique to avoid it or was it completely random?
Just figured it out. The arch-vile blast does 20 damage directly and 0-70 in a blast radius, and this last part can be avoided by staying behind that skull column.
And then the same archvile became his friend :-d
that archville is the douchiest monster in the game imo, he ressurrects other dead guys you worked so hard at and spent ammo on, who can also be quite formidable. If youre in his line of sight theres no dodging or straffing, he will toast your ass!

why you use rocket for gliding in 13:27 ? i dont think doom engine includes friction. actually when there is friction between things (here bars and doomguy body) we need extra force to overcome it.

He doesen't use any saves at all. Every time he fucks up he restarts the whole game. He wouldn't be able to record demo if he did.
If you take the secret exit in map 15, that would be more faster than the normal exit. The point of this run is finish the game in the short time possible.
no silly, TAS tools take that into account, typically slow motion combined with ability to save the game. If you want to see real human skill - search okuplok by BlooditeKrypto

During a break at work, sometimes I play Doom and I'm getting completely merked or I'm the one whose wrecking everything. Either way, its violent and brutal.
Brutal Doom is just stupid, over the top, unfunny and adds absolutely nothing to what it means to play Doom and be a "Doomer". You will never see any respectable speedrunner do their records in Brutal Doom.

Why does the archvile damage only 10%s at 17:15 ?
"The arch-vile's attack inflicts a base 20 points of damage, plus up to 70 additional points of blast damage." It's possible to avoid taking the blast damage by standing up close against some wall\pillar, unfortunately I don't have an explanation why that works.

This game is so weak even a PlayStation 1 can run it. My weak-ish laptop can run this game (GzDoom and GLBoom+ Source Ports) with no trouble.
My old peanut laptop can run it, although it does overheat.
But then again that wack overheats over everything. Even images. Bluuuu

Whatshisname This glitch is called Glide. The character is 32x32, so he can go through 32x gap. It's pretty hard.

This type of glide named Guided Glide. It means you have a wall to guide your position. Guideless Glides (like in MAP02 in this run) is 100x harder. So in guided glide you need to hug the guide wall, then look straight into the gap (you need a perfect angle, it's 0/90/180/270 depends on gap, I recommend using IDMYPOS for learning it), then using your vertical mouse movement you start slowly moving forward, it is MF1, the slowest speed in the game. I don't really know much, I think the first glide on MAP21 is the best for learning.
