I started cycling a few months ago largely to get some kind of hobby outside of tech. Absolutely love it. You're forced to be present, outdoors, plus you get good exercise. It feels like total zen on the bike and my only regret is not starting to do it sooner.
Cycling is my activity as well! I love it, I feel more able to explore than walking or driving. Its hard to explain, but you are moving fast enough to feel like you are actually exploring but not like with a car where you don't fully absorb your surroundings. It feels like how walking through the woods felt when I was a kid. Plus it is good low impact cardio Also if anyone wants to get into it, you can get a used old durable bike for super super cheap or even free.
I try to steer away from the 'regrets on my deathbed' type of reasoning when evaluating my hobbies and pastimes. For me, I find that guilting (ESL, not sure if that's an actual word) myself into 'productive' makes those loaded and make me want to do them less. I play a lot of Rocket League, but that doesn't interfere with my day-to-day responsibilities. It helps me to offload the stress from those responsibilities and manage my energy in a healthy way. That does need to be balanced with proper nutrition and exercise. But even those aren't loaded with the 'productivity' guilt, because I find I get stuck in restlessness, emotional instability and an inability to focus on what needs to be done at that moment. Thank you for making these videos. Came for Linux, staying because of the diversity in the subjects and the attitude you bring. I don't care for the memes that the comments bring, just do what you want to do. :)
That's fair, and guilting is a word, or at least it's commonly used! As long as you are able to maintain balance in your life, there's nothing wrong with having hobbies that are not "productive". No problem, and thanks for that :-)
Great video! Thank you! I try to go on walks as often as I can. In the evenings, I’m often tempted to check work-related emails for our small family e-commerce business. One strategy I think might help is creating a separate user account on my computer and switching to it during my spare time to avoid the temptation of engaging in work tasks.
At about approx. 3 minutes, 30 seconds in, I paused to get my guitar... That was about 2 hours ago. Giving undivided attention to something to the point where you can do it on autopilot, is a great discipline-building exercise. Thanks for the reminder. Have a blessed day.
For people thinking about picking up exercise, you don't have to do it all that often to get like 75% of the benefits. Maybe 1 hour of exercise 3 days a week and it will help you tremendously. Similar for mental exercise, with things like reading, a few hours a week goes a long way.
Great advice! I love the outdoors but I work in data centers, I feel really sucked up by social media and tech and all the nonsense. I think a lot of the world is designed to keep us busy and from actually doing things in real life that matter.
i deeply resonate with the message. just recently i found out that it is not technology that keeps me the most happy. it's the small things in life, like spending quality time with my people (be it family or friends), biking out, hitting the gym or interacting with culture - reading a book, blasting a good CD or going to the cinema... these helped me survive 2024, which for many aspects was horrible... but what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger, or sth like that lol
I totally agree with you, the smallest things make the most difference. The tiniest joys and comforts really do add up. Hopefully 2025 treats you better :^)

Love videos like these! :) Away from the computer I like to do table tennis, swimming, learning an instrument, cooking, cleaning and going for walks. I've tried to pick up drawing a lot of times, but I sadly struggle with it.
Thanks! That sounds like a balanced list. :^) Drawing can be fun even if you struggle. I wouldn't call myself an artist by any means, but I love going outside with a sketchbook and trying to draw some birds or a landscape.
@@BreadOnPenguins I wish I could do more :D That sounds really nice o: Funny enough the last thing I drew was a giant bird in a landscape. Bringing the drawing outside is actually a good idea, for some reason I only thought of reading outside ':) I need to figure out the best way to do it, I'll most likely be siting on a public bench drawing at first.
going for daily walks and eliminating social media entirely (other than watching youtube when im on my PC) have been the two best decisions i've ever made in my life. I agree with you entirely. Im not sure if others might agree or not, but the struggle I have with getting away from a video game "addiction" is that I don't really see any pathways that will take me to "success" in life, so I just make enough money to sustain myself living alone, and play games since there isnt much else going on. Also, could we expect to see any violin content from you in the future? :)
I understand what you mean about not seeing any pathways for "success". The traditional ideas (money, family, power?) are not the only ways to be successful, though - it took me a while to realize that. I didn't feel as if I was on a path to success until I scrapped everyone else's definitions and figured out my own. If, over time, you can identify what you want out of life, and start working towards that, it will give you more of a purpose and a drive forward. As to violin content - likely, yes! :-)

That's a cool species, thanks for sharing! I just looked up the name origin - the species is named after Ferdinand Magellan, if anyone else is curious about that.
Very good video that deeply resonated with me. At the moment I watch too much YT (at least good stuff like yours), getting hardly anything done. Wish you all the best! Obligatory question: Where can I download this beautiful background image?
Something that helped me with YT consumption was getting a browser extension to disable recommendations. Your local forest might have something similar ;-) Wish you all the best as well!

I guess you could say going to concerts is a hobby of mine and that's been the most social experiences I have with strangers also been playing an instrument on and off for a decade, becauseI'm only playing when I was feeling it, but my hobbies are always going to be centered around technology honestly, I have no idea if I agree or disagree with your take yet, but I think it's interesting and important to hear from someone making a name for themselves in the technology/Linux niche

talking about hobbies, penguins are actually quite good at surfing! some species, like the adelie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins, have been spotted riding the waves in antarctica, using their flippers to propel themselves through the water and their streamlined bodies to glide across the surface :p
I really need to get back into playing guitar. I love music. Also trying to build a habit of going out on walks again. On the other hand, since I picked up playing Monster Hunter again, my favorite game franchise, over playing other games I was playing, I noticed a significant improvement of my mental health. Definitely pick up guitar again, even if it's only once a week if that's all you can manage! That's an interesting observation, nothing wrong with enjoying games as long as they don't overtake life :-)
It is all about balance. And like you said, that is easier said than done depending on your lifestyle. Some people are fortunate enough to have a choice of lifestyle. But others are not so lucky.
Linux - Nature lover pipeline is true lol. Some hobbies i have, some new, some old: playing TRPG, Jiu-jitsu (i love it so much, i even go to oficial competitions), reading books (literature, history, philosophy etc, but these are more than just hobbies, I'm really learning those), drawing, i write too (most are just notes from what i study and read tho lol). It's really important to have hobbies that you like and you can really enjoy reality, if you stay to much in the internet you can even start losing touch with reality and start to think the real world is fake and strange. It's important to have hobbies that include social experience too. Anyway, i would love to go into the woods but there's none easily available.
It's awesome you have so many different hobbies :-) You're completely right that too much internet leads to losing touch with reality. It can be a serious problem that manifests in many ways. I guess the best strategy for life is balance. Maybe you'll get access to woods someday!
I miss having a giant forest in my own backyard ngl. Back home that used to be my play ground, both the mountains behind our house and the river in front of it. City life and esp city life abroad is just sad and meaningless
Hi Bread, Luke vipes indeed he haven't made a video in a millennia, first thank you for your awesome channel, am now learning fzf from you to use it in my daily work, i think indeed focusing on some passion is a good way to over come addiction, other thing is emotional integrity and emotional intelligence part of that working on my trama, i highly recommend teal swan video the root cause of addiction or titled something like that. I want to be a Situational Violinist. Like if war is brewing I want to be in the state department fiddling, or maybe someone has decided not to use Oxford commas or has decided pineapple on pizza makes sense. I want to appear out of the ether and go all Kronos Quartet on their ass, fiddling away darkly as we see the beginning of descent into darkness, ignominy, and failure. I could do it as a hobby. The problem is there is no way to just manifest out of the ether into these situations. If I put it on a business card and people have to remember to call or text, and then wait for me to just show up, it's going to lose its Aronofsky-esque punch. I mean on second thought, there are also situations in which a submarine is taking on water and sinking slowly into the Marianas Trench. That's definitely a situation in which a 24-hour service violinist would be summoned and I am really claustrophobic. But even in this last case, one thing is certain: there is no way to check your messages when you are doom fiddling. **EDIT:** Disregard. Am thinking of cello.
Hobbies are very important to be healthy. There is a lot of truth to the phrase "idle hands are the devil's workshop." Letting yourself atrophy in multiple ways is a dangerous downward spiral that takes far more energy to reverse than prevent. Personally I like to have a couple hobbies to address my mind, body and soul, because if I'm not improving each of these, I am likely regressing. I don't understand comparing you to Luke Smith. It just feels like a forced meme. He doesn't have a monopoly on sharing opinions in the woods.
Thanks for mentioning about idle hands, that's a very good point. I like the idea of focusing specifically on what might help mind, body, and soul, and finding something that can help improve each. I've taken it as a compliment, but yes, I could see it getting a bit annoying if it gets brought up forever after :-)
Just plant stuff and be one with the soil.. you can feel the connection just to put your hands under it.. that is amazing feeling and yes, no computers.
I see my 5-hr web binges from a need-based perspective more than a want-based one. I find it correlates to time I'm burnt out from work or haven't taken time to myself to relax in a few days. I just tell myself "I guess you needed that time for your brain to chill and explore" and move on.
That's an interesting perspective, thanks for mentioning. You're right that it's best not to beat yourself up just for being burnt out or needing to relax a bit
What you're describing is called self-discipline. Something that's sorely missing from modern day society. If you haven't already guessed from my name and avatar, hiking and camping are my passions. Luckily for me, I grew up in a different time where tech didn't rule people's life. So walking away from tech is an easy thing for me.
You're correct, and self-discipline applies in so many areas beyond this as well. It's awesome you have that passion. I've always been at home in the woods - that's, in no small part, from being raised to enjoy hiking and appreciate the natural world :-)
Thanks for mentioning! I'm not sold on the idea of van life being realistic for most people, but I do think it's a great goal to be as self-sufficient as possible, and to see the world.
Ehehehe, so os I used to spend hours and hours in a desktop just doing whatever, but not playing video games 🎮 only sometimes and I’ll be having a good time and now I get bored sitting in front of a computer screen for at least 15 minutes, but again I can spend hours and hours scrolling in my phone and having a good time just you know checking out the social media models and such and such and that is fun. i should take your word for it and find something else to do before heading back to scrolling, thanks for the motivation…😺💪👩💻🥰⭐️💎💃
Hi Bread, I really like your content. I normally watch everything on newpipe, but i felt the need to log in this old account to be able to comment: So far I agree with most of your GNU/Life Stuff. So i did with Luke Smiths practical advice Videos. Until i saw the video "orderly dissolution of the united states into its componant parts". The Video can be found on the internet. I wonder if you know this and what you think about it.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment! I remember watching that video when he released it, it looks like it was pulled from YT though - not surprised. With the assumption that Luke's opinions in that video were in good faith (not just for clickbait/views), I do not think the argument is realistic. However, I don't want to be political (or even implicitly political) on my channel for many reasons, some obvious and some less so, so that's all I'll say on this topic.
After I'm satisfied with my arch rice, I'm gonna buy a house near the woods. Sure, I'll be gray, old and a FreeBSD user by then but I'm sure I'll find a hobby not related to technology. Also, I'd like to confess that I'm addicted to pong.
When stepping away from technology and back to reality if at any point you find yourself writing a manifesto STOP! You've over-corrected back up a bit and reassess.
@@BreadOnPenguins Yes, that's an excelent idea. I love beeing taken on a hike through the woods! In fact I find it most comparable to geting on a walk with a friend to speak intimately and intensively (I'm German, that's how we do it). I feel like my thoughts and ideas flow more freely when I move also. Do you know the YTer Skallagrim? He makes videos about Historical Martial Arts (European and international) and pop culture. But I like his existentialist rants, ramblings and sometimes philosophical excurses in the woods or by the coastline the most pleasant and thought provoking.

It's really important to have hobbies that you like and you can really enjoy reality, if you stay to much in the internet you can even start losing touch with reality and start to think the real world is fake and strange. It's important to have hobbies that include social experience too. Anyway, i would love to go into the woods but there's none easily available.
It's awesome you have so many different hobbies :-)
You're completely right that too much internet leads to losing touch with reality. It can be a serious problem that manifests in many ways. I guess the best strategy for life is balance.
Maybe you'll get access to woods someday!
I have actually been thinking the same thing. I think I'd benefit from finding a hobby out of my apartment
Go for it! Even if you can only dedicate 30 minutes a week, it's worth it.
Millenium praising Bommer Smith
I miss having a giant forest in my own backyard ngl. Back home that used to be my play ground, both the mountains behind our house and the river in front of it.
City life and esp city life abroad is just sad and meaningless
Sad, hopefully you can get back to the forest someday - if you grow up with it, it really is home
Like the back of my hand, every spring and tree and rock. You are very lucky.
Great video 💯
Thanks!
Genuinely the most intense, chaotic, technically challenging, and intellectually extreme hobby you can have is… follow me for part 2
Aw darn what's part 2!?
This is a GREAT piece of advice - technology is fun but it can be overstimulating & addictive (like most things)
Hearing the same message in therapy and in my many various interest's youtube channels means that I should probably take the message more seriously...
You won't regret it, if you start taking it seriously :)
Keep your cool content going
Thanks for recommending that video, I'll go watch! Always good to hear different takes on important topics.
Will do! Thanks for commenting :-)
"Specialisation is for ants" makes sense to me.
This comment was legendary. Absolutely the funniest thing I've read all day
Hobbies are very important to be healthy.
True, humans have tended crops for food, work, and relaxation for millennia. It's in our blood to be in tune with the soil.
That jacket is lit.
Edit: forgot the obligatory "who made it and where can I get it and does it work with pywall?"
Thanks! Sorry not sure how to make jackets create wal colorschemes :'(
A simple one buy a watch, a lot of us carry phones around for the time, a cheap Casio stops you checking / carrying your phone for the time.
That's a great point!
Do what I do. Work 8 hours working in Linux and Python.....then relax by reading Books about Linux and Python...oh hang on....
Lol, credit for reading books at least! :-)
I've always been at home in the woods - that's, in no small part, from being raised to enjoy hiking and appreciate the natural world :-)
Damn, I agree with this video, I had my wake up call months ago, but I keep working on myself after working on myself. Peace
Keep at it! But also remember to look back and see how far you've come :-)
you are becoming more relatable damnnn
Lucretia Smythe
This is the best version of the name so far
Yeah I joined gym a week ago 2 houre away from tech with health benifits
I hadn't realized that you had already accepted the joke about you being an AI from Luke Smith. Lol
I touch grass
And take pictures of nature (foss of course) 🗿
I actually just got a mp3 player and do most of my commuting offline
True a good tl;dr of this vid is just "touch grass"
mp3 players ftw!
Funny thing. My Linux and youtube addictions led me to this channel. Fate?
There's this giant ball of fire in the sky.
Only for about half the day though. Simply use the computer when the sun is out and go outside when it gets dark.
I work with music. Linux is my hobby.
There is a channel named "Trent The Traveler", that its maybe the dream of all Linux users
Thanks for mentioning! I'm not sold on the idea of van life being realistic for most people, but I do think it's a great goal to be as self-sufficient as possible, and to see the world.
just realizing i don't even look at the sky
sister here spitting facts
Gotta take time to just watch the sun rise and set sometimes 💯
@BreadOnPenguins i started doing it thx to your video
Ehehehe, so os I used to spend hours and hours in a desktop just doing whatever, but not playing video games 🎮 only sometimes and I’ll be having a good time and now I get bored sitting in front of a computer screen for at least 15 minutes, but again I can spend hours and hours scrolling in my phone and having a good time just you know checking out the social media models and such and such and that is fun. i should take your word for it and find something else to do before heading back to scrolling, thanks for the motivation…😺💪👩💻🥰⭐️💎💃
The Azur Lane of Luke Smith clones
How did you decide the name "bread on penguins" though?
She is called bread and is on linux(penguins)
@demipy is correct :-) I suppose it might read more clearly with a comma (ie. Bread, on Penguins)
Hi Bread, I really like your content. I normally watch everything on newpipe, but i felt the need to log in this old account to be able to comment:
So far I agree with most of your GNU/Life Stuff.
This is legendary. Good luck overcoming your pong addiction, I hope you haven't been addicted since 1972..
It's funny the way you try to make us think that you are not Luke Smith.
I should get a Luke Smith mask as an April fools joke
@@BreadOnPenguins 😹😹
i agree
When stepping away from technology and back to reality if at any point you find yourself writing a manifesto STOP! You've over-corrected back up a bit and reassess.
LMAO. Noted ;^)
🎉very nice🎉
Thanks! :^)
My mate bread here talking about tech addiction soon after Factorio gets an extension. I feel seen...
LOL enjoy the extension in a healthy quantity :^)
❤
you should walk with a selfie stick (unironically), it makes the video much more dynamic instead of just sitting for 10 minutes
Yeah I was thinking about that! It would improve videos significantly :-) Thanks for suggesting
Nice Video!
Thanks!
Lucy Baker
when did Luke Smith grew hair? did he found the cure to male pattern baldness? :0
LOL!
Do you have a brother named Luke?
You never know... :^)
These trees look finnish
It's interesting you say that - of all countries, Finland would also be the one I would pick as a good comparison, for that grove at least lol
Why haven't I subscribed yet
totally thought you are the female version of Luke Smith xD thats weird compliment but hope you know it is one :)
Lol fair enough, I've been taking it as a compliment :-)
Origami for me :D
That's a cool hobby! Sweet
Yay! Another musically minded Linux user!
Yup! 🐧🎻
Luke Smith is an Awful Fascist he is in no way a role model. His ideas were not okay but the videos were fine I guess until he started getting too much into the memes.
its kind of too late for me my homelab is like a second job but I also do things outside of Technology sometimes
Hahaha boomer. You look great for being in your 70's
Lmao
first?
First indeed! Thanks for watching and commenting :^)
