I'm a 72 YO male and I spent over 50 years of my life WITHOUT any phone (other than the landline phone on my wall), or any Internet whatsoever. I had a fantastic childhood. We had no video games, TV for the most part and spent most of our time outdoors playing whatever came to mind and enjoying ourselves. We watched MAYBE an hour of TV each day (the evening news). Life was great. No worries about being shot in school, no worries about neighbors or friends being in their SILOS or hating on each other. We all got along and didn't even think of having instant information or gratification. Life was much SLOWER and PEACEFUL. I honestly feel very sorry for today's youth, our country in its present state. I'm very thankful I lived in a time with none of the things that have only brought hate, anxiety, and people turning on each other. In my time we knew right from wrong and we didn't have to think whether something was real or fake. We knew truth from lies. Its very sad to see what technology has done to our society (and I was an IT admin for 25 years). I really think you are a great inspiration to the youth of America. Keep up the good work.
My family never had a TV in the house, and I did not get access to a computer at home until I was a teen and needed a laptop for school. As a kid I was so jealous of everyone else having TV, video games, later on getting phones, but by now I'm just grateful that I had a childhood free from that. I still choose not to buy a TV - I have no need for it. Thank you for sharing your point of view - I truly hope that we can recognize as a society that we're doing more harm than good. I don't think it's beyond repair, but we need a collective push and better parenting from the current and future generations. I appreciate the kind words :)
Genuinely an amazing perspective, also props to you for never getting into social media. I stumbled across this vid randomly and it just left me on a positive note. Wishing you the best.
That always-on-urgent-job is hard on our minds. It’s important for us to have some outlet. I 100% feel that programmed need to check for catastrophes… and it loops easy into social media or the news. Thanks for making content. You seem like a very nice person.
Youre incredible, for real. Im serving the army and constantly tired of it, and when i get to study things for the distro i use, which is a little complicated (gentoo xD), i just grab the phone until i sleep. But with advices like yours im very hopeful of overcoming this. Thx for the awesome content, bread!
Thank you for serving! I'm sure it's appreciated by your country, even if it's tiring. Gentoo is fun but definitely complex haha - keep at it! Glad to hear you're working on overcoming that, and no problem :-)
_"Put out these fires..."_ is a phrase I do not miss since leaving the corporate IT world. Being on call 24/7, managing servers, workstations and point of sales systems for a regional retail chain was a miserable job. Sure the money was great, but at what price? Health, sanity, personal time. So I eventually left that job. I now go days without picking up my phone. And as a result, I'm a much happier and healthier person.
Thanks for commenting - I'm glad you were able to leave that world and regain a happier and healthier life. I walked into a series of on call jobs right out of high school and was very committed to that type of work for several years, until I realized how much of a toll it takes on life - I'm just thankful I reshaped my point of view early on.
I should say I'm on this position of having phone addiction and constantly thinking about many things and being anxious. Thankfully I don't have any sleeping issues due to that. But it still disrupts me while I'm working. Excellent video!
This year I stopped smoking and rarely drank alcohol. I deleted all social networks (not at once, because I was lazy, but gradually: first Twitter, then Insta etc.). I left one messenger and youtube. I started sleeping normally and going to bed on time. I mean that I started to feel better about myself. Before that I was in a severe depression for 5 years because of life problems and self-determination crisis. As a result, I stupidly fuсkеd up everything and lived according to my possibilities. Now I help my family and try to set even small goals. You can't earn all the money in the world, but burnout and emotional exhaustion are easy to achieve. Live on your own and be happy.
Good for you for making the choices needed to better your life. Most unhappiness in our lives is our own doing, barring extreme circumstances. Humans are resilient and our mental state bounces back to equilibrium when given the chance. Keep going in the direction you're on!
Been there, done that. But it is still painful to watch others go through it. But then we feel joy when they finally figure it out. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
I gave up on social media like instagram or FB but you're right about the youtube stuff. I consume a lot of videos throughout the day. I'll try and change my routine as I'm well aware that this is not healthy but I found that the hardest thing to do is to stick to a different routine. The brain is struggling against it, after years of doing the same shit for years.
Getting extensions to disable recommendations and then subscribing with notifs for creators I actually wanted to watch was very helpful for me - it limited youtube time to less than an hour per week and I didn't miss the mindless surfing. Even if it's a struggle, you CAN overcome any content consumption cycle.
@@BreadOnPenguins Thank you for the advice! LE: Maybe one day you'll make time for some suggestion on how to keep these distractions away. I followed your advice and installed a Firefox extension that blocks all my recommended and shorts and it's way cleaner this way.
