I have no interest in ever using live blades. Trainers are good enough for me. Plus I also bowl so I can’t risk cutting my fingers.

Why does nobody mention you just put tape on the edge of a live blade to make it safe?
...then when you're comfortable, you have an actual usable knife instead of only a toy.

im living in one of few countries where balisongs are legal in europe (austria)
we have a tiny club here with a few members and its 1 or 2 trainers for training and priorority is defenitly on live blade!
no risk no fun, call it a "ghetto fighet spinner"

but i see my balisongs as a tool, as well as a toy,
i keep em sharp and i dont mind cuts if i mess up!
I'll get some nice live blade ones but i'll never flip them. I can't imagine failling an aerial or any type of dangerous tricks that could actually hurts really bad, especially with quality blades.
Fair I’d get a live blade and flip it but tricks I’m good at doing like Ariel’s I’m comfortable with

I think I heard somewhere that if you want to use a live blade but don’t want to start and learn with one, you could get a live blade and put like electrical tape or some other strong tape on the blade and you can use it safely. Is this true?
Yeah that works. That’s what we had to do back in the day when “trainers” weren’t a thing.

i heard painters tape but yes, putting some kind of tape(preferably tape that wont leave that disgusting residue behind) and then when you feel your comfortable with the live blade you can take the tape off. also that's the dog from the ohh you meme right? love that meme.

ive had a bladed balisong i picked up at a flea market years ago, learned around the thumb and a shitty open (basic open minus the proper rotation to make it smooth, so its like a 3 flick thing) but other than that i havent done much due to it being a live blade. i bought a squidtrainer V4 and it should arrive in a few days! but i feel like with having the bite handle indicator (though ig that can add some extra grip to catch onto) and just choosing to focus on bite vs safe handle even on a trainer means most people should be able to have the same focus you can, and wont necessarily have the issue you do with 'not caring' since its a trainer...
i would kinda like to have a live one anyway cuz, tbh, its more impressive to flip a live blade than a trainer. however they're KINDA illegal where i am (you can own them but cant have them in public, and they cant be sold here anymore, so eh) but i might get the mako at some point as it has SOME kinda utility, at least.
with all the innovations coming out recently, im sure there'll be more 'utility' balisongs coming out in the future that hopefully are just as fun to flip as trainers and knives (for example the 'baliscissors'). its a great time for the balisong hobby, it seems, and im excited :D

Im consideing getting a live blade for the simple reason that the blade just looks a hell of a lot cooler(imo).
The reason ive been holding off of the tought is because i dont want to be reckless.
My flipping is at a point where im not concerned about messing up my usual tricks and combinations that i do but i still am missing a really good trainer that i can safely learn new stuff with(i own a LOT of clones xd) so right now im kind of inbetween getting either a live blade or a really reliable and good trainer,what would you reccomend?

I say use what you are comfortable with. But I'm sry people shouldn't hate on live blades! Some of the most collectable ones are live blades. I sweat if peoppe keep complaining and we start getting them not made ill be pissed this is how it starts in many hobbies. Next thing you know no more live blades. So people just need to stop. Use what you like don't hate on anything else. We like live blades most of us do the comps are with live blades the most expensive baliaongs are live blades aka the most valuable! So yes we like collecting the knives not just trainers! A certain person in the community is who started alot of this crap. It needs to stop. Some peoppe don't even flip so yeah just get what you like. It's upsetting for me because I know what comes next. Live blades somehow get banned or frowned upon and then boom 60 percent of us grt bummed out because now they won't be produced as much. I hope that never actually happens but it wouldn't surprise me.
Reading the comments give me hope! I truely hope that we get 50/50 made of both that way we are all happy. That's how it should be ans that should never change!

i want a live blade but i cant get one in England and i dont want to risk loosing a lot of money shipping on here so ima stay with my glidr og clone (and kraken and vulp soon) :)
see I would suggest the opposite, I would suggest to get as much variation as possible, the lowest I suggest is for the balance points, one handle heavy, one blade heavy, and one neutral, to me if you want the lucha for the sake of having a lucha, sure, its not my money your spending but getting a heavy knife and learning to flip with it even if your not comfortable with it could be a great learning tool but then again I'm the guy with like 80 balis in his collection and am still struggling with backhand fans and ultimately carrying momentum in some cases so what do I know.
I flip about 50/50 trainers and live.
I do prefer collecting live blades though. I have my one favorite trainer. And a couple live blades I switch between.
You mentioned getting a kraken, and since those don't drop verry often what live blade would you suggest to someone as a first. From what I've seen if you don't go the aftermarket route. Only flyti luchas or a atropos are the live blades you can get with any regularity. And if they are available more often their expensive like the serif.
Yeah Luchas are fairly easy to get, my local Scheels are selling them

Im getting into this waiting for the day i can rock a live blade. To me it feels kinda boring without the risk. Its like a hobby with a bit of danger to it. Its no different than someone going base jumping or rock climbing.

The reason I like trainers better is because the whole reason I’m in the hobby is for the flipping, so it’s not the danger that motivates me to get it smoother, I just want to get it smooth for the fact that it looks better smooth.
I actually started flipping on a live blade as a way to force myself to get better.in the same way you say it helps you’re tricks be cleaner it helped me not keep bad habits when it came to flipping.🤣
I only have trainers, I'm quite new to flipping, and I 'cut' myself like 20 times every time I flip lol

some people see it as fidget toys, while others see it as a skill toy. depends on the person! to me theyre more of skill toys, as i am constantly trying to improve and learn now tricks, hence the "skill" in skill toy

I have never used a balison before but I just purchased the boker plus marble carbon fiber balisong. Should I not learn on a live blade at all? Worried I made the wrong choice of buying a live blade instead of a trainer despite mostly wanting an edc item that can be used for an actual purpose but has a little extra style while opening.
probably a bit late to this but taping the blade with electrical tape or tapes that wouldnt damage the finish would most likely protect you from cuts
i nice loophole i found out for getting a live blade if they are illegal in your country (only use this tip for flipping and not causing harm) you can buy a live blade and then buy the handles/trainer. now the problem is u might have to buy double shipping cause its kinda sus buying handles and blade yk

Oh yeah, legal loopholes and such, but it's such a hassle. Plus, even if I managed to get one, I'd prefer to flip with a live blade and I can't really take that out in public. Not really worth it, but I think that if they start selling separate live blades for the talisong z I might have to order one. that blade profile is lovely

i agree i flip live blades a bit more prob 60/40 split but in my opinion learning to flip a knife and not ever flipping a knife is kinda redundant right ???
i use trainers and there fun and good for learning something new but then always go and do it on the live blade

I'll never understand live blade flipping. Collecting lives, sure. Utility cutting with lives, ig you can. But flipping just doesn't seem worth the insanely high risk of injury.
The only place trainers have in the community are for people who live in illegal area’s, and for kids who aren’t allowed to have live blades. But other than that live blades are the way to go, and people who flip live blades are way smoother than people who flip trainers only.
