- I go through some of the change i have made to my ebike programing to get the bike to perform the way i want it. Many popular commercial bikes also use Bafang motors and may be fully reprogrammable as well.

I think I can honestly say I think this this the best tutorial I've ever seen on anything on youtube, ever. So refreshing!
this guy smoked it
Great tutorial and I say this to you with love, were you high?
Indeed
This is a good video for showing how to re-configure the settings... Thank You ! These modifications were just the ticket !
The gear shifter makes it a lot smoother and has natural peddling.
Great Video. I did have a 250 watt bafang but upgraded to the 750 watt. When I first tried the bike it was far to fierce in in the lower settings. Your settings are perfect in the 1 - 5 almost exactly mimic how the bike was with the 250 watt motor and 6 - 9 make the most of the extra power.
JEEEEEEEEEESUS are you telling me that phisically 250W and 750W motor are the same? is just software limited??
No. The 750w and 1000w are the same
@@stevenc22 NO they are not.the 750w is the BBS02B its limited to 25amps, the 1000w is a BBS03 (BBSHD). the bbso3 has larger core motor windings and its controllercan take upto 30amps before you get magic smoke.
by far the most concise and informative i've seen so far. great work.
Thanks!
@@stevenc22 Hi, could you make a video about the free Speeed (3 letter e) app for configuring Bafang BBS series motors (and most Hub motors).
It is the equivalent of the popular windows tool but in a robust phone version with bike display functionality and 25 language versions.
thank you for a great job!
@@marcinkopa I cant seem to find it in the app store?
@@stevenc22 Unfortunately, at this time only Android phones/tablets are supported (iOS does not support usb-uart adapters). Hey man, spent 40 bucks on the Bafang programming cable but when I plug it into my computer I don't get anything other than the sound of the computer recognising the device. Is this a driver issue or should I be getting a pop up menu? I have a Juggernaut 1000w mid drive. Thanks in advance.
This is the best guide for programming the BBS02, on UA-cam
This is a great video for tuning your Bafang. The mild settings are perfect for my wife and has enough reserve power in the upper levels. Thanks, good job!
Glad to help
I’ve heard that you can configure these to work more like a torque motor, any idea how you would do that? I bike for exercise but at 71 with 4 back surgeries and 2 hip replacements I’m slowing down, I can only go 50 miles on a trike and I’m whipped. Thanks
@@lennymiller7336 Lenny, what do you mean by "Torque Motor"?
From my understanding the BBS02 is considered a cadence motor and a torque motor provides assist based on how much force you put on the pedals.
I see. Yeah the Bafang doesn't quite work like that but you can easily program all the different assist levels to get the right amount of assistance so that you still get a good work out.
Just a heads up. Depending on where you buy the cable and the cable brand you will end up searching online for compatible USB drivers before Windows will recognise the USB com port.
But once you have done that it works like a charm
hello Steven,
Thx for your tutorial. It is really well done. I already watched other videos but your parameters are the best.
I just modified speed limit of assist level 5 and 6 to a lower value than 100%...
On Tuesday and Wednesday I'll test it on a longer trip.
Thx
I'm scrolling through the Bafang videos; this is the most understandable yet.
But please explain all the settings on the Pedal Assist tab/menu; these are referred to in other videos but I still don't understand them.
Also links to download the Bafang Tool would be useful, partic for W11 which (as of June 2023, many have been forced to upgrade).
Thanks for the video was very helpful, I copied your setting and it made an amazing difference thanks again.
Extremely useful information, thank you !
Thanks Steve,i just hand to replace my controller due to battery reporting issues and the throttle wasn't grunty and it was too fierce off the line on ped 3
I believe Bafang motors are compatible with Eggrider controllers. Allows 2 separate profiles and every parameter becomes accessible including power level. Plug n play, at least on the BBSHD. Program via Bluetooth and app on your smart phone, --- boom.
Yes, i have Eggrider is pretty good!
I've reduced the two Start Current to 1%, was too jerky for me at the start.. much smoother now
also Slow-Start mode is the time it takes to ramp up to full current, the parameter you are describing is Start Degree (How long it takes for the motor to react when starting to pedal)
No splitter cable. Plus it's best to make small changes at a time or else you can mess things up. Just start with you stock tune and tweak a few things that annoy you.
Great tutorial butI I have a mac. Is there software out there that I can install on my mac?
Thanks! my controller died and needed a new one so got the newest model and pedal assist one went from 12mph to 17-19mph lol. I bring my puppy with me and try to go slower and it is a pita. Cable should be here saturday, can't wait to slow my recumbent trike down lol
There is a Mode in Bafang motor called 'waking'. By keep pushing the minus button it get activated and the max speed will be around 5mph. I admit that 15 mph is too much for level 1, anyway.
Great explanation of the spped settings but your wrong about the 1k motor the 750 is 24A & the 1k is 28A controlled but I agree to keep it lower anyway as the cooling on the motors is insufficient for full voltage to the controllers
Afterthought . . .
if you were to revise the video, please highlight that . . .
it's the motor/controller that decides when to pedal, not simply the rider.
E.g. if you stop pedalling when approaching a Stop (with 18-wheelers rushing past at 100km/hr ) and you click down a few cogs in preparation to pull away
. . . and turn a few pedal strokes to ramp the chain to the cogs, you can get a sudden surge in power
. . . into the 18-wheelers.
Is there anyway to disable the speed sensor? It’s keeps giving me error code 21 and cuts off the motor.
Thanks for the info, I have 2 bikes with Bafang middrive's, they're both 350w 36v units but they perform differently. Your info should I hope enable me to get them both the same. Thanks a lot, Rob
Thank you I tried to find info but their is very little . The shop i bought my bike from would not show me how to derestrict or program ? So i got the cord ! My BAFANG IS A 1400 WATT MID DRIVE . A little confusing . Thank you !
If you have a Bafang mid-drive this is well worth doing!
The first cable i bought did not work. It would be recognized by my computer and show up in the com port but it could not read the controller to show any info. I ordered a new one from a different vendor and it seems to be working. I have a 1000w motor with the 52v 19.2ah shark battery. Anyone have a video or post about fine tuning the same setup? 29' specialized rockhopper 2015, btw.
Kelly Controllers also are programmable. Contact their support and five them your controller info.
Hi there, great video, can the m600 be programmed with your cable. I have issues with too much speed like you. Especially with take off. Thanks. Annmaria
Thanks Steven for taking the time to make this video. It is an excellent source of information for me. I’ve got a Bafang 500w mid motor on my TerraTrike. I would like to slow it down in general. I am a little uneasy thinking that if I did something wrong I might “brick” my controller. Is there a feature for controlling the headlight/display function? Right now when I turn the headlights on in the daytime the display automatically dims so much that I can’t read it. Also, it would be nice to just have the headlight come on when I am riding as a safety feature.
Thanks again!
Bruce not sure about the headlight but try it out. Pretty much impossible to "brick" it
You might know this. Can the amps be reduced safely to only use 250 watts max? I only want one bike for private land and also road legal.
Yes of course. You can set a max amps limiting the bike to 250w
Mentioning gear setting would help.
So the motors can be unlocked to run at higher speeds but now the other parts of the kit that aren’t rated for use at 1000 watts risk being burned out or damaged?
So if all the parts on the except the motor itself were built for the 1000 watt motor then you could clock the 750watt motor up to its full potential safely?
The kit can do 1000w. It's just software limited to 750w
My was factory set to 24. Goes good bends the high cog good
I've set mine to 1 in slow start mode and it still doesn't kick in until I have at least 3 cranks of the pedal what's going on
wait a minute ....250W and 500W motor are the same hardware inside but software limited??
Thanks. Are you implying that with a 25A controller, I can get the full 1000w power out of my BBS02?
Steven, you didn't talk about the speed limit configuration. Can you configure it to override the limit?
Second tab "pedal assist", third drop down box. His reads "by displays command" which means he has gone into the "secret" screen on his display and set the max speed to his preference. I think you can use this drop down box to change the universal max speed at the controller or simply disable it.
Same question, can you override this setting, or connect to the display to change it. In Australia most bikes are limited to 25km/h which is ridiculous.
Steven, is the software on the bike or do you have to get that separately? I just ordered the cable.
I know it has been awhile since you posted this but I thought I would try anyway. Great tutorial. I was hoping for some clarification. You suggested setting the throttle maximum to assist level 8 so you don't blow out the motor. The power is set to 100% on the previous page so wouldn't it be throttling at the same level ( 100%) as level 9. Thanks again
His current limit on PAS 8 is 80% of 18 amps, quick math; 18 x 0.8 = 14.4 amps max current; On a 48v battery system ; 14.4 x 54.6v = 786.24 watts @ full battery, 684 watts @ 47.5v 50% battery and 622 watts @ 43.2v 11% battery which is when the walk assist function should be considered to preserve the battery.
I purchased an Ariel 52V x class. It’s not a mid drive but a rear drive. The drive is by Bafang. I have the same problem with run away in PA. Doesn’t matter if you leave it in the stock 0-5 range or as Ariel says “change it to 0-9 and that will help”. That’s BS! Ariel says you can’t change the percentage on each pedal assist. I can’t try the programming cable you mentioned because its a female adapter going to the controller not a male. The only hope I have is that there’s a USB port on the LCD screen. If anybody has any suggestions or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
brake lever or brake sensor? what to order?? I have mechanical brake sistem on my bike. PLZ HELP
I use sensors. I wanted to keep my original brakes. The sensor just sticks to the underside of your brake lever.
Nice.good to know...
I have one question in my mind. It is Necessary to install a gear sensor? If you have, how it affect the performance ? Thank you..
I do not have one. A gear sensor isn't necessary as long as you let off the throttle between shifts to reduce the load on the drive train
I have one and it functions perfectly and I don't really notice it, without one if you fail to stop pedalling when shifting you will snap your chain pretty quickly
If I hit a bump it'll sometimes activate briefly though, so maybe something to consider if you're riding trails
What about the 250 watt limited motors? Are they also capable of being unlocked up to a greater potential or will that also likely risk damage?
A seller told me that with the 250 watt Bafang kit, that all the other parts other than the motor itself will work with the 500 watt motor, so theoretically in places where motors are limited to 250 watts, someone could fairly easily swap out the motor for a 500 watt motor and take the bike off road out in the backcountry and use the extra power to carry gear, then swap the 250 watt motor back in when you want to ride the bike in public again?
Legally the motor must have 250 watts written on the motor to be street legal where I am, but if the 250 watt Bafang could be unlocked up to a higher potential safely without needing other higher rated parts which would normally come with a higher rated watt motor then that is very interesting is genuinely safe to do and the motor kit stays equally reliable ?
In fewer words, what wattage can you safely unlock the motors up to that are factory limited to 250 watt for local road rules? Can they also be clocked up to 1000 watts or just 500? Thanks again
I don't know much about the 250w version, but after a little googling I think the 250w version has the 350w controller on it so you can likely overclock b the 250w version to 350w. No more.
I think the AMP setting on the 250 will be much lower. Something like the range of 10-15. What every the original is maybe 15? Do not go beyond that. You are only asking for trouble.
The speeed app for an and works way better than the windows program!
Great Video. I am thinking of running a throttle-only setup on my current build. Do you think it is even necessary to install the controller and sensors for this? If I do still require the controller, then is there a way to disable PAS while still allowing the throttle to sit at PA lvl 9 for example?
You can disable PAS on 1-8 and then just program 9 to full throttle
Great tutorial but where do I get the program I need? thanks
There are links in description
Superb explanation
can you use value over 100% ?
example. set 'assist #9' speed limit to 200%
.
Also, is there a minimum parameter for the motor that could damage something (the other end of exceeding maximum)? A window zone for operation min/max.
.
Love your settings.
No you cannot exceed 100% but you can increase the amps if you want more.
I don't think there is a minimum and I don't think a minimum would hurt anything
@@stevenc22 But NEVER put the AMP above the Max of 25 AMP for BBS02. You will blow the controller I believe maybe the motor.
For a BBSHD I believe the Max is 30 AMP.
That said your lower settings are safer and I believe will increase range.
Great video!
This is so dang cool!
Bought a bb02b 750w a few weeks ago and it runs great, but i was curious as to how it was setup from the factory. So i bought the usb adapter and got the software.
Mine was set to 24amp as default, and max is saying 24, not 25 like most out there. Anyways i changed it to 20 just to stay on the "lower" side of things.

Thank you for this very informative video. I have a Bafang 250w m400 motor. When I pedal I have a feeling that the engine only helps up to a certain point. Than I have to switch into a higher gear ( cassette gear ) and then it helps again. Do you know if there is a setting where I can prolong this help limit? I don't have a throttle, only pedal assist.

Great video Steve and very helpful info
7:33 Thanks for the great tutorial. You'd mentioned you wanted to override the throttle regardless of which PAS mode or gear bike was in, would there be a risk of damaging the components if you set throttle power to high?
No but the tutorial does recommend not putting the throttle so the way to level 9 because going up hill and punching the throttle could overload the controller
I cut back the amps to 25 it’s rated for 30. Start at a 10 % and increases as you go up
That you for clear explanation! Very helpful, endeed! Subscribed.
Great video, as you experienced, my Bafang was quite strongly powered out of the box. I was able to follow your instructions and make changes to soften the power at low assist levels. But, then I find my display, a Varstrom touch screen is allow only 5 levels of assist. I've explored all the setting and everything I can find, but can not find the option to change from 5 to 9 levels of assist on the display. I've encountered a "pass word" option. However, I don't have a password and the instructions that came with the system are quite brief.
Do you have any suggestions about the assist level option on the display, and/or how I might get through the password setting, change or whatever... Thanks Fred

Hello. Can this process also be applied to my Engwe bike, which has an unbranded motor? I definitely want to try it.
In the Engine Pro 2.0 model, the motor cuts off power after 28 mph and continues only with pedal power. Is it possible to remove this limit, or more precisely, to make the motor continue to assist the pedal after this speed?
Have you tested this software on motors other than Bafang?

Great video, thanks. I have a bafang 750W 20 A, which functions very well but keeps getting error notes: code 30, code 10, etc....

Code 30 is a communication error. Code 10 is an over heat error.
Thanks for this video. One question though. If I set setting number one to 5km/hour will the motor start when it reaches 5km/h and will it also cut of at 5kmh?

Thanks for the effort and for the video. Can I use a battery with 36v on 750w/1000w motor? You haven’t shown if you can change voltage below of 36v!
No. Motors have a set voltage. Some motors are 36v motors and some are 48v motors. You cannot use a 36v battery with a 48v motor regardless of settings in the controller
@@stevenc22 Steven, I have read, that some of the Bafang 1000W controllers has got an option to be used with 36V battery and to change the voltage. But no way 36V motor with 48V battery!
Be careful. A 1000w motor on a 36v battery means 35 amps. The wiring is not designed to carry 35amps. That is why 1000w motors only come in 48v because 48v uses less current.

Likely the BMS is turning off the battery, not the Bafang
@stevenc22 Interesting. Thanks for your guidance! I'll investigate. I know BMS prevents overcharging, but I didn't know it could cause a battery cutoff.
Yes. If batteries are drained below 3v a battery they get damaged. So a BMS will turn off the battery if too high or too low

Maybe. If you have a bafang controller box it might work. But many hun motors use aftermarket controllers that don't work

Honestly there probably is but I haven't looked for it. Check the two guides I linked to, they are way more in-depth
Stop delay under pedal assist tab
If you program it does that void the warranty?
The program is direct from the manufacturer. So just using it won't void the warranty. However if you over amp the motor, that could void the warranty
Great video , my question is if will works also for a front wheel, I've changed my motor and now I can't adjust the pedal assistance and it shows me a to higher speed than real.
Only if you have a Bafang controller can you use this cable. It's likely you have a wiring issue or your controller isn't compatible with your motor.

Hi. I don't have a Bafang motor, my one is a 48v 1000w ebike compatible with "SW900" LCD from Aliexpress.

I think that is mode 0. You can reprogram mode 0.
@@stevenc22 I am going to give that a try upcoming weekend! i'll let you know if I succeeded :p
can Bafang BBS02 48v 750w run by 36v 20ah battery? any setting need to be change?
No. 36v is too low, the controller will think your battery is empty because 36v is what a 48v battery goes down to when empty
@@stevenc22 how about if I change the setting of the low battery protection & also increase the current limit. will that help?
@@elahwentv8086 Why would you ever buy a 48v motor for a 36v battery. Buy a 36v motor.
Hi, my new Accolmile City bike mounts a mid M200 Bafang motor, with BUS Can; I am told that Bus Can motors cannot be programmed... do you know if this is true? My aim is to skightky adjust the kevek of assistance on each of the 5 levels and unlock the speed limit (15 miles/h now).
Yes the newest motors cannot be programmed. However you might be able to unlock the top speed by going into the secret menu on your bike display. Google which display you have and how to enter the secret menu
Initial response: Got this bike for my friend. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ Delivery was fast. And the friend was surprised I would order it when she had never suggested she wanted anything but the pedal bike she had. She has now ridden the bike two times and gives it a 10 and says it is very fun. We have some hills in our town that are very challenging to climb on a typical bike. But tonight she went up with the pedal assist and loved it. I was way behind on my standard bike, huffing and puffing. Now she is no longer lagging behind me. This thing is powerful enough that a person could go around town without any pedaling. She likes to get some exercise so on flat ground she hits the red button to turn off pedal assist and only uses the twist throttle when she's in a tough spot. The bike looks good. It is really a very nice bike for the friend. Now for me, when I get an electric bike, I'm twice her size and will be looking for a bigger watt motor and battery. But this one is just wonderful for my friend. I am happy with this purchase.
Would like to hire someone in south Florida to program my bafang
Hello!
This cable and softwear works on a rear motor hub Sutto (Bafang) 48v 1000W?
Because my PAS not active the motor
Depends. Not whether your motor is bafang but whether the controller box is bafang. Many companies use bafang motor but their own proprietary controllers.
I think this motor is rated 25amp max and 40 - 59 Volts.
The motor is capable of max power: 1,470 W
I've heard max peak on these motors means it's been tested to handle max power over quite a long run (compared to just a burst acceleration).
Did somebody ever tried to overclock the controller ? Let's say 20amp with a 52V battery ?
Yes. My battery is a 54v battery and I have run it at 20 amps no problem
@@stevenc22 what top speed do you get with that? the top speed in the software is based on the wheel size I think.
I've done 35mph before that wasn't really trying to Max it out.
@@stevenc22 That's really good at 1080 Watts. I think you could change the wheel size value to 18inch to get a higher maximum speed but 32mph is more than decent.
Can this be done with the 1000w bafang?, anyone know the amps
Can you lower the torque settings somewhere i have a belt drive but its recommended max 80nm torque but i want the bbshd on my bike
Sort of. You can reduce the power ramp up which is the equivalent of reducing torque
@@stevenc22 thnx
Hi I wonder can you turn off pedelasisten because i have a 1000w bbshd BBS03 58v when fully charged and it is very dangerous from start i would gladly turn it off, please if you know how please do a video, my best regards
You can set speed limiters or limit the current in each speed setting. Yes you can turn off pedal assist. You can set assist and speed to 0 which turns off pedal assist
This is exactly what the video is all about.
