      So you think a Celica is more exciting than a GT86? A car that has more power, better chasis, better suspension and RWD. And what about the new Type R, isn't it fast enough for you?. The sound it's not the same but otherwise it's a really good car.

      2) plus it's not just BHP by itself, it's power-to-weight ratio, and many of those cars are lighter (the Civic R, for example, is almost 300kg lighter);
      3) plus he's starting in last place, on an incline and handicapped with a far-back position.

    • @thealeksanderh
      @thealeksanderh 9 років тому +36

      well, since they used R versions of honda, one would think they'd be using T-sport toyotas. atleast they could have used the GTS celica, witch would have hold up much better. in this race they used one base celica and one 2zz engined celica.
      and not having the mrs in this race is wierd because its statistics wise perfect for this comparison/race whatever.
      and yes, Honda does make great motors :)

      unfortunately, you can't use the verb in the present! instead of knows we should use knew! due to the present day constraints and the death of the NA, engine sounds are going silent. Only exotic makes, can have good engine sounds with turbos, because they can use exotic materials and million dollar exhausts, that the common brands cannot make/sell.
      I really hope I am proven wrong with the next models, but for now it is the sad truth.

    • @darios9797

    Unfortunately for this circuit the gearing on the Celica throws it right into the flat spot of the 2ZZ powerband (5000-6000rpm) in 3rd gear on the big uphill. It doesn't even accelerate on the uphill, just barely hanging on around 5200-5400 rpm.

    • @BlackLines
      @BlackLines 6 років тому +11

      yup. and at that point it has only 143bhp instead of 190bhp .. if only "lift" kicked in at 5,200 like VTEC does.

    • @THEjameshaner
      @THEjameshaner 6 років тому +14

      The GT-S has 180hp in the US and 190hp overseas. Mine is a 2000 year model and fuel cut off is at about 8400 rpms. If you rev to about 8200, you stay in the power band with no issues or dead spots. I've never raced a Type R, but I think it would be closer than this. The 2zz is dead at lower rpms. Not much there. It's happy above 6000 rpms and rewards you if you drive it right. Also has a very restrictive exhaust from the factory which doesn't help. Mine is at 240,000 miles on original engine with nothing but suspension, intake, and exhaust. Burns no oil and has no issues at all. VVTLI still pulls hard and it corners well.

    • @kotymccallister5150

      @betelgeuze7668 5 років тому +5

      This looks kinda fishy. Do you realy think that even at 5500 rpm without lift engaged the Celica cannot accelerate up that hill? And it's realy strange that every time the celica comes up the hill it gets stuck at 5500 rpm just before lift. Kind of a big coincident. I dunno but this seems realy fishy to me.

    I used to have one of these celicas. The ratios are stuffed, it is difficult to consistently stay in Lift(Vtec), especially on an incline, so you bog badly into 3rd because you land outside that power band. Shame because it was a brillant car. My very good friend who had a Type R would always get me buy half a car because it just wouldn't shift like the R. I'd land 3rd at about 5500 which is useless.

I am in no way a hater of Honda and in fact have a soft spot for them but there are just very few examples of a good balanced race when it comes to JDM cars unless your talking late model EVO/STI battles.

Great for highway cruising and pulls, but on a race track it involves a lot of shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear to keep it in lift.

    I know these guys are pro's and I love BMi videos have been watching them since I found out about them in the early 2000's.
    But Akihiko didn't know how to drive that celica. On these engine's you must kiss the rev limiter at around 8300 rpm's for a fraction of a second so the next gear stays above 6000 rpm's where the "Lift" point is at or the small to large cam lobe change over is. (This is toyota's "v-tec")
    @ 7:20 you can see he doesn't even rev it to 8,000 rpm's and the next shift drops below 6000, you can even hear the engines tone change when it switches back to the small cam. So if he was changing gear like this every time of course he was going to have cars creep by him throughout the race.
    But in his defense its known to be pretty difficult to stay in the 2zz's sweet spot above 6000 rpm's at all times. If you shift too late your bouncing of the limiter and loose speed if you shift too early you fall out of the big cam lobe and loose speed. But if you get it right you get a strong pull in the next gear. It's fun when you get it right.

      +Johnny Salvattore cause toyota fans dont know japanese car manufacturing history. people make fun of honda making lawn mowers, but thats just testimony to their engine making capabilities. toyota started as a company making fabric and sewing machines. no passion for cars at all, while honda started with bikes. shortly after honda went into f1 in 1964 while at the same time releasing a roadster for one of their first cars. other japanese manufacturers had no sports cars and shortly after toyota copied releasing a roadster in 1965. without honda all the other japanese manufacturers would still be making buses and trucks. now lets talk toyota sportivo.. crap! does not come close to honda type r's. just check youtube. and the gtrs get smashed by the nsx in both track and quarter mile. basically, research all of the japanese car manufacturers before u hate. also realise honda has the most advanced robot in the world and makes jets + bikes. p.s. not hating on you johnny salv.. just educating the nismo and trd kids.

    I own a ae86 right now , currently getting rdy to turbo it, stock engine rebuilt bluetop 16v. Owned many hondas including two s2000. I can tell you guys no street cars n/a from toyota can beat honda's. Especially's with today's popular k20/k24 civic swaps. The K series responds to bolt-on mods and turbo so well that even S2000's are starting to get K24 swaps slowly instead of the torqueless F20c. You can make easily 250hp out of K24's. Ae86 n2 atlantic tuned might stand a chance but its a race car and engine alone is over 18k$.

      @earosa25 9 років тому +6

      Angelo Cusipag read a couple of your prior posts and you clearly don't know anything about honda's. So please do yourself a favour and stop talking and comparing vehicles. And if you want to talk about modern day vehicles please look at honda's lineup of vehicles coming out this year Civic Type R and NSX both of which are already glorified for their track accomplishments. The new NSX is a V6 TT producing approx. 500 hp (at the crank) and the new Type R is a 2 litre single turbo producing approx. 280 hp (at the crank). Oh and btw new NSX is less than half the cost of an LFA and outputs just as much power with almost half the motor, just saying.

      Eric Rosa a win is a win no matter what the price is. Integra 170hp vs GT-S 180hp: GT-S. NSX vs LFA: LFA. Supra vs S2000: Supra. Type-S vs 90's MR2: MR2. Then of course there's Toyota's GT86, and TF1 (New Supra). Please, I've owned more cars and modified more engines than you have ever had in your life.
