My 20 yr old son has always called #41 "mom's song" , since I've played it over and over since he was 3 yrs old. I remarried a few years ago, and he chose this as the song he walked me down the stairs to my new husband to.
A very unfortunate incident that brought these guys together :( However, this collaboration is utter bliss. The solo, the buildup, everything is perfect for music fans. I wish these guys would do a guest appearance together soon, Rock on boys!
I'm a jazz guy and I'll tell you something...John Mayer's an AMAZING musician! He can definitely hang with the big boys and this performance shows just that! WOW!!! Blew me away!
I like John as a jazz player because his style isn't just the fluid, repetitive chromaticism trap that many jazz players walk into. He changes it up a lot and is often very percussive. Great guitarist.
Damn. I attended this concert with my now, Ex-wife. Unfortunately I didn't know how GREAT John Mayer was at the time. I had only a limited knowledge of DMB then as well. I opted to leave early and that was one of the GREATEST MISTAKES I'VE EVER MADE. Still in search of time travel, so I could go back and make ALL THIS RIGHT.
Jeremy Mazuca, so much ignorance in the United States that we are the predominate Superpower of the WORLD! Can't get much more ignorant than that. FUCK OUTTA HERE.
Travis Beasley AWW yeah just about a little over a year ago I found out just how great John Mayer was and I tell you the boy is absolute golden on that guitar
This was my first concert with my momma when i was 7!! My teacher happened to be behind us and was SO confused as to why a 7 year old was there and singing along to every song ❤️ hokie nation is so strong!!!
So, this drunk guy was yelling FORTYYYY ONNNNNEEEE all night, driving everybody crazy. Like, during the really quiet moments. And this was kind of a somber mood because of the shooting at VT. Anyway, dude got dragged out by security 2 songs before this and everybody in his vicinity that could hear him, which was like 1/4 of the football stadium, clapped and cheered. Kinda felt a little bad for him because he was obviously drunk, passionate, and a fan. But it was better for the rest of us. My man, I hope that you got to a show later and heard an amazing long version of 41 with some improv jams and you never forget it.
No one understands how much I fucking love this. Johns first concert was dmb and then around 15 years later he’s god soloing over a song he probably heard at that first concert. The Dave Mathews band is a national treasure, so is Johnny Montana. God bless the both and this recording
I’ve been really lucky & have been able to go to so many truly phenomenal concerts- including the stones, Clapton, I even was lucky enough to go to one of the few zeppelin “reunion” shows- & only 3 people have ever blown me away with how unexpectedly outstanding & talented they were on the guitar: the first time I saw Tim Reynolds with Dave alone, Neil Young at Farm Aid 2012 (I guess I didn’t expect him to be THAT good & JAM like he did for a small set at Farm Aid), & John Mayer. I saw JM in 2010 at MSG & couldn’t believe the talent this man has. You never really hear him explore the depth of it (he’s since put out some albums that do showcase it, but in a gentler way) but damn, can he play the guitar. He’s fantastic here. And he’s one of the few artists I’d happily go see again without a second thought.
The fact that this is a 14minute rendition of this song is why DMB are just the best band ever. I love them and I LOVE this song. Thanks John Mayer for all the heat!
Even though this concert came together for a very sad occasion, this video is my all-time favorite. John Mayer and DMB playing my all time favorite song moves me so deeply. I love that JM is SO into the song and connected so deeply to Dave and the band members.
I know ALOT of DMB on guitar but if I was ever offered a chance to play alongside of the band, I would be wayy to nervous. Not really so much because of the audience but just being up there with the band would be really nerve wracking (don't get me wrong, the audience would be a factor, not just as big a factor).
I have been searching for the complete version of this song featuring John Mayer. So cool to hear it in it's entirety. Nicely done!!!! Thank you for this.
you can always tell when John Mayer is playing, because he has his own style. Thank God. The same with Dave Matthews. You can always tell when he's playing too, because of his own style. It's very finite, but if you listen, you can pick it up.
Gonna play drums to #41...guess I'll just have to play with a track since I know how hard it is to play... Plus we don't have all the instruments we need
Gotcha....I used to say when I was like 15...if I can ever match Carter...I'll be happy! I'll never be As good as him though... lol. I used to sit in my garage and play Under the table and dreaming all day long. He's been my idol ever since I first seen him!!!
I used to work for Pearl in Nashville and they sent me to a Dave Matthews Band show to try to sign Carter to Pearl away from Yamaha and Carter kept telling me how much he loved his Yamaha kit he said just go sit down and play them.. so I actually got to sit down and play his kit he was right...they sounded better than our Masterworks kit we were pushing at the time!!!
Dave Matthews is truly a class act. My parents have been fans since the early ‘90s, and I’m a current VT student, and will be seeing him live this July!
@mattbeermusic I heard a story not sure how true it is, but apparently in the late 90s Mayer was at a DMB show and had an acoustic with him and he played along to #41
That was the most moving show I have ever been to in my life. Everybody who lost there lives in that tragic shooting you could feel them there. I am very fourtunate to have gotten to go I sat 4th row, and stood in aww watching it all unfold.
Neither are you. Your ears must not work because John absolutely knocked this outta the park and is easily one of the best musicians of his generation. When fuckin Clapton calls someone a “master of guitar” you can bet that they’re pretty damn good. Go kick rocks

stupid
Awesome!

Nate Brailer what incident?
JoshMetal316 VT shooting
Nice.
Can someone please make a tab from 4:54 - 5:45 and message me... I've tried but my ears aren't that fast!
my two favourite musicians on one stage...
snoookie456 my god same
My 8 favourite musicians on stage
I’ll never forgive these guys for not giving us more of this collab. Don’t know who to blame, don’t care. But there should be wayyyy more of this.
mayer's dmb fandom is pretty apparent here, he knows all the violin and sax melodies on guitar. and harmonizes with them at a lot of points.
John recorded room for squares on a Dave Matthews signature Martin. Definely a fan of Dave and crew.
I remember listening to a show from the 2000s and he said he knew all of their songs.. he then played a bit of #34

Ha, fun to see a comment like this from 9 years ago before he began touring with members of The Dead
I think he’s one of the big boys now

Big mistake
JC Schwartz the BIGGEST. Something's are once in a lifetime and I missed mine.
Don't worry, when I feel down I just remember that somewhere out there, an ant erroneously brought borax back to the entire colony.

THIS. IS. HOW. YOU. PLAY. WITH. A. GROUP. The obvious preparation, the respect for the original, the skill, the chemistry, god what a number.
This was my first concert with my momma when i was 7!! My teacher happened to be behind us and was SO confused as to why a 7 year old was there and singing along to every song ❤️ hokie nation is so strong!!!
John's ability to play a miniature JM-flavored edition of the very song he's soloing on in his effortless way is otherwordly.
So, this drunk guy was yelling FORTYYYY ONNNNNEEEE all night, driving everybody crazy. Like, during the really quiet moments. And this was kind of a somber mood because of the shooting at VT.

I know there are mayer haters out there but he is talented..and he's a dmb fan so you know he put his soul in this one..epic

I cant enjoy dmb anymore. I think of how much I miss LeRoi and Boyd with a dmb backing track.
Thanks for sharing. This is my favorite version of #41 by far.... and today is my 41st b-day!
You are so right, he played it to perfection, even got that signature hook in that any DMB fan would recognize from their jams...sick!!!!!
Nobody comments on this, but Carter's groove is so god damn funky on that jam!!!!!!
be like water. you put water in a teapot it becomes the teapot you put water into a cup it becomes the cup. be like water my friend.
Kelly Storm water is life
Awesome
Ok Bruce Lee. ;)

Mayer fits in seamlessly, shows his fandom as well playing the main riff, and blows it away here. Hope this gets released
officially in some
capacity.
and THAT my friends...IS MUSIC ART. :-)
Probably the greatest live video on UA-cam.
The fact that this is a 14minute rendition of this song is why DMB are just the best band ever. I love them and I LOVE this song. Thanks John Mayer for all the heat!
Also the fact that a 32 minute version exists.
Even though this concert came together for a very sad occasion, this video is my all-time favorite. John Mayer and DMB playing my all time favorite song moves me so deeply. I love that JM is SO into the song and connected so deeply to Dave and the band members.
I will never get sick of watching this!!!! So insanely AWESOME!!

5:34 takes a genius to think of that so smooth!
RIP LeRoi
If these two don't cut a record of this (and hopefully more) song(s), it will be a crime against music...
Is this the first time Mayer ever guested with DMB?
Super 😎😎 cool John & Dave .. love this jam #41 has always been amazing
you can always tell when John Mayer is playing, because he has his own style. Thank God. The same with Dave Matthews. You can always tell when he's playing too, because of his own style. It's very finite, but if you listen, you can pick it up.
It’s a travesty this is the only clip of these guys playing together. The jams that could have been…
before the jam part.. mayer plays SO tastefully. you can tell he's jammed to this in his room when he was still starting out. amazing
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
that moment that boyd starts playing and your pants inexplicably start to become moist...
I was at this concert so damn amazing !
No words!!! Amazing!!!! One of the best guittar sollos I´ve ever heard!!!
People think this is a love song, but it's about DMBs first manager that they fired!
Would love to hear everything turned down other that John’s guitar in order to pick up all the subtleties
im sorry what i love dave matthews band and john mayer never knew they got to perform with each other thats so awesome!!
@ChesterCopperPot5 How very artistically done.
What an epic solo.
Gonna play drums to #41...guess I'll just have to play with a track since I know how hard it is to play... Plus we don't have all the instruments we need
Actually the kick drum was the easiest part for me! Lol
Gotcha....I used to say when I was like 15...if I can ever match Carter...I'll be happy! I'll never be As good as him though... lol. I used to sit in my garage and play Under the table and dreaming all day long. He's been my idol ever since I first seen him!!!

Boyd standing there during the solo thinking …I’d like to get me some of that tonight
Cheste- thank you so much this was awesome. If your coming to Bristol va this summer I owe you a beer
What song is playing at the beginning over the Goonies? Is that Halloween? Thanks!
Makes me so happy
Maybe not needed but much appreciated and with total respect from those of us that love both Dave and John~~some of us "get it"!!!!
@jacksgranny18 Me Too!!! So glad I found it, thank you very much ChesterCopperPot5!
Funk Riff all day!
Still my favorite version

My favourite bit was when it started.
Unbelievable
So what's up with you?
This is like all my dreams coming true....
@jkidd5656 Butch?
Love it
Fucking Amazing!!
Dave Matthews is truly a class act. My parents have been fans since the early ‘90s, and I’m a current VT student, and will be seeing him live this July!
pure awsomenes

Dave Matthews and John Mayer... so sick!!!
snoookie456 playing #41!!!!
Ok someone, your really tripping me out, you need to reveal yourself. Even though I think I might know who you are
Melhor combinação de todas! Tomara que gravem essa música para valer um dia....
Dont pass this one up. It's what your looking 4
The best version that I've heard on youtube so far of this performance. Nice upload!
Somewhere in the world 15 people SUCK.
I keep coming back to this if I want to listen to an awesome jam session.
Just saw this for the first time and wow
And it blew our freakin minds!
I was there that night...❤️❤️❤️❤️
YAY! Awesome work, as usual!
Wooo!! Awesome!!
thank you
i dont know man
jm's so slick
carter lovin it
one of the persons on stage does not belong - can u pick out this person?
go home john mayer lol you're not needed here
I hope your not still a moron.
Neither are you. Your ears must not work because John absolutely knocked this outta the park and is easily one of the best musicians of his generation. When fuckin Clapton calls someone a “master of guitar” you can bet that they’re pretty damn good. Go kick rocks
Mayer is a whinney child. 41 is now less of a song. ..and is one of my favorites. Dave's better when he plays with real musicians.
Very rare and very badass footage and song!!!
