Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

Incidentally, where I live in California we have so many visitors from Canada it seems like 30-50% of our town's population. Here, only a few hours from the Mexican border, Canadians are basically our next-door neighbors who we see for only one half of the year.

So I attended a silent rally this morning….holding a large picket sign. My teenage daughter and I froze our fingers to the bone. Then, I went canvassing in the hood, alone, for 2 hours. A few hours later, a friend sends me this link, because I'm IN this video three times! THEN found out Bernie is coming to my workplace on Tuesday!! This has been a magical day.

I will always love Bernie. He had so many great ideas but people brought him down just because he was socialist and liberal.
"Brothers and sisters". I'm starting to tear up every time he says it. I've cried more during this election cycle than I ever have in any other, and these are tears shed from happiness. Thank you, Bernie, for caring more about us little people who can only give so much (I WISH I could afford to max out, but when you make a little over 7,500 a year on SS like I do, funds are limited) Still, every spare dollar I have that doesn't go towards bills and life, goes to the Bernie Sanders campaign. It is money I COULD USE, but I don't want it. I want Bernie Sanders as my next President more than I want any spare change I have left at the end of the month. All my spare time when I'm not suffering from the various extremes of my mental illness goes to phone banking and canvassing. @@hategreedrevolutionary6594 Veterans didn't fight for Democracy though. When did the US defend Democracy in this century or since 1945? They have killed a lot of innocent (and guilty) people and civilians. This is the power of nationalism. They are seen as hero's even though they have killed a LOT OF PEOPLE. I would see them as hero's, if they are defending their own countries (Ukraine) soil or prevent a genocide from happen or so on. In the end, they are victims as well. Thinking that they are helping their country, while being just naïve. To prevent people choose their type of government (Communism, Democracy or whatever) is the opposite of Democracy.
Nearly the entire family of a friend of mine was killed during the Vietnam war. Its not a great way to die through napalm or agent orange. People even today still suffer from crippling because of the dramatic effects of agent orange & co on the environment. With Bernie this wouldn't have happen. I think with Kennedy, a great leader, as well. Makes absolutely sense to comment on a video 7 years old, when its about that topic. Hope he runs for 24. Instead of Biden, who wanted to attack Iraq since 1998, a reasonable leader which hardly disagrees with the Foreign policy of the USA should be elected.

I truly feel sad for those who have not allowed themselves to be part of this beautiful and awe inspiring movement. So many of us are forever changed for the better thanks to Bernie's message. We may see the controlling powers of this country with more skepticism and frustration than ever, but we also see each other with more compassion and understanding than ever. It's so unfortunate that there are still so many who don't see or believe in the great possibilities that will only come from a Bernie presidency and with that, the rest of us may be forced to watch, with broken hearts, this once in a lifetime opportunity slip from our hands. I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I watch Bernie Sanders speeches and interviews every single day. I hope for the sake of America and the world that Bernie Sanders becomes the president of the United States of America. When the world thinks of America, I want them to see that together, the people stood up against the corrupt system. I am sending my passionate faith to my neighbours that I know are great people. when my small coffee shop was being bullied by millionaires property sharks in VT, He sent me his home phone number. When my Mother moved to teach in Immokalee FL, he was the one that protected her students small community from the crimes against humanity that occurred there. She showed me the farms , where people were, literally being locked at night. I called her as she watched the Florida ad and cried "my sweet families!, That was him?" He reached out to help us, twice, when I had no idea who he was. He really, really is in this for you. I'm not anti-Hillary, just pro-Bernie to the limits my heart will allow! Go man, GO!
