    I absolutely agree. A ten year old fullframe camera, a 24mm, 50mm and around 135mm lens and you have everything you need to make breathtaking pictures in most situations. If you cant do it with that stuff, the gear is not the problem. And if your budget is very thight, just the fullframe camera and a 50mm prime lens will do the job most of the time.

      Well said! OVF is great, because it "forces" you to learn technique, science & light, properly. Something that mirrorless makes ppl get lazy about I think.

    My name is DSLR Forever. Don't give a damn whether they produce it any longer. Own multiple Canon pro bodies with tons of shutter life remaining. So, no worries about gears, just concentrate on my photography.

    Nice video. Appreciate acknowledging that Pentax still exists. My main camera is a Pentax K5 IIs. And I also have a mirrorless Olympus EM 5 Mark 2.
    Funny thing was I bought the K5 IIs as a hedge when it was unclear what the future was going to be for the MFT camera system when Olympus pulled out. Since I bought it I have hardly touched my other camera.

    I bought a new D700 and a D3 in 2008 for shooting weddings and events. Other DSLRs followed when i was shooting model portfolios in Manhattan. I later bought a. Z7 but it didn’t do the job. The two Nikons i got back in 2008 are still in use mostly because of their 3D Focus Tracking and the great smoother sensors.

    the d750 and canon 5d mkiii are not only iconic and gamnechangers for their time but they of course still hold up very well today compared to new full frame mirrorless. d750 dynamic range , iso etc is still as good as the best cameras of today

    Recently I got a used d750 too, I am happy with it, the IQ from a 10 years camera just blowed my mind . And it cost about 500 bucks here in China which is quite good. I was wondering to buy a fuji. But fuji here was never restock and full of scalpers and overpriced. I might just keep using my D750😁.

    Cameras are relevant in that they are the mechanism by which the artist's vision is realised. Beyond that is the capacity and capability of the tool to replicate that vision. That is why I believe that quite often it's the lens that is the most important part of the camera.
    I have an Olympus E1, which lends itself more towards portrait photography, due mainly to the 2 x compression of the lenses used, but I'm looking for a Nikon D200 for my outdoor work, as I like the colours out of the camera from the ccd sensor. It seems to reflect my vision of the scene more closely.

      In the space of about 10 months i got an olympus e-5 (12 years old) a mirrorless pen-f (5 years old) and then a canon 5d classic (19 years old) i love them all and i use them all for a lot of different things. DSLR have more of an experience to their use. If mirrorless is spotify, DSLR is vinyl. Currently pining after an OM-1 simply for the autofocus and low light range. I think i will always keep the e-5, 5d and pen-f as they give such different vibes. The OM-1 will be a powerhouse of versatility though.

    Well...I just bought a Nikon D300 late last year so for me the answer is a resounding yes! Relevant in 2024.......and beyond. This D300 is my first "real" camera and ironically, I had a type of mirrorless camera (a Nikon COOLPIX L840 super+zoom, point and shoot) which was fun to shoot around with, but simply lacked the control and versatility of a DSLR.

    Nice video !! I Went from DSLR's to M4/3 to Sony mirrorless - just retired and now gone back to DSLR's. I don't do video in any shape or form. Last year I bought a mint boxed Nikon D200 and I use it with a couple of Nikon AI manual focus lenses that I already had. 2.4k shutter count - £95 !
    Just last week I bought a Canon EOS 1ds mark ii with 27k shutter count in mint condition for £185. I'll be seeking out a few Canon EF primes and I'll be sorted. You just don't need to spend huge amounts to make good images.

    I personally don't understand how any camera, whether it be film/digital, slr/dslr, rangefinder, compact, mirrorless (evf or not) would NOT be relevant. If you're only about hunting spec sheets, you'll never be happy anyways. But, if you're into photography as an art, a passion... you'll find enjoyment and be able to use any camera for nearly any use case scenario.
    I personally prefer an OVF, so DSLR's are what I'm all about. Big Pentax user here, currently with the K-70 and K-1 ii. I have absolutely no reason to look into mirrorless. The joy of handling a DSLR and using OVF is a huge part of the experience, and it's one I'm not willing to trade up.

    • @LeeGale
      @LeeGale  4 місяці тому +1

      I completely agree with what you're saying. While this video talks specifically about DSLR's, I do believe that all cameras are relevant and there are multiple reasons for a person to make their choice. I actually shoot a bit of film, and I'll be doing a video soon where I go out and shoot with my 1936 Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex TLR camera. I too prefer the OVF over EVF.

    I think it really depends on what the hell you are trying to do. If you are buying a camer for PHOTOGRAPHY, an older DSLR is an absolute beast. Hell, even a D7500 or a D500 is an amazing idea, they've got amazing low-light performance. And the lenses are dirt cheap (compared to others). If you are buying a camera for both photo and video or for pure videography, buy a mirrorless camera, the autofocus ai etc. will be an absolute gamechanger.

    Buying a dslr and some lenses can be done for less than £1000 or even cheaper if you go older. I think beginners should start with dslrs because you look at images via a proper viewfinder which teaches you to focus on composition. Then when the image is taken you can critique it (including the exposure). The best way to learn in my opinion is with a prime (50mm) and use manual settings and keep a journal about what you learn.

    • @LeeGale

    Inverting the question , “how are DSLRs not relevant ?” Is a good provocation.
    For me, my DSLRs serve me well for every use case and purpose that I press them into service for.
    Perhaps that is to take away from the DSLR that it is more capable than I need.
    Ultimately I bought a camera to get the images I need for semi professional and personal use.
    DSLRs have been over spec for years.
    However there are so many irreverent posts and comments about them being old tech etc.
    well so is the humble automobile, same concept but we call the latest new and modern.
    I’m not against mirrorless. They have a lot of convenient features and tools . They don’t take better pictures though.

    Lovely images Lee. It pays to keep an open mind especially in today's shifting camera market. Although I'm primarily everyday Fuji for the smaller lighter form factor it's hard to ignore the bargain DSLR's NIkon's shift to mirrorless is also throwing up. I had Ai/Ais lenses for adapting but no Nikon camera, so in the summer bought a virtually brand new D700 for £300 plus added 4 D series primes which are also great value due to incompatibility with new Nikon mount. I'm now looking to complete my Nikon set-up with a mint sub 5k shutter count D800 for £500, which with Fuji's popularity just happens to be what MPB will give me for my Fuji X70 which cost me £285 used, what a trade and in my view ups the quality of my set up on a ridiculously low budget.
    I should add I have a self imposed spending limit of £500 on a single body, yet I've still managed to get quality Fuji's like the X100F, X-Pro2 and X-H1 and now the Nikon D800 within that budget, they all get there if you have patience . I'm a stills shooter so the latest advancement in video features are wasted on me, the older low priced models more than exceed my requirements and they certainly aren't lacking in quality, quite the opposite. I think it's well worth being conscious of the law of diminishing returns in terms of what you need.

    • @LeeGale
      @LeeGale  4 місяці тому +1

      I'd love a little Fuji for an everyday camera. That is a great trade for the X70 and I hope you can get the D800. It's good to have a budget in mind when purchasing new gear and it's great to see people on here who also appreciate older equipment. I'll hopefully be doing some example videos soon of some older cameras.

To the professionals, and with the fusion of video and photography, who needs to keep up with the latest and greatest to survive, their DSLR are either already been sold on ebay or relegated in a corner where they occasionally pick it up to take a photowalk. I was not inspired until I purchased a MFT Mirrorless in 2015 and now I use it all the time. Live view changed photography for me. I’m not a pro and never will be. Mirrorless is in my opinion easier because you see the results right away. My advice, do some research, set a budget and buy what you can afford. And if you can afford a mirrorless, do it. Also why did you show epic landscape photos and beautiful models. No beginner will ever be able to capture those photos. Show local everyday places and try to make it interesting and within the grasp of a beginner. Nice video though. I’ll check out a few of your videos. Cheers from Ontario Canada

Regarding the example images, the reason that I showed those is because they are images that I've shot over the past few years and to give an example of the quality of image you can expect from the camera regardless of what level a person is at and hopefully, they may also offer some inspiration.

    Surely not relevant as new camera purchase. Technology has moved on to newer and better things, it’s that simple. While the DSLR may well work perfectly well and do well as a cheap used purchase, it just is not a worthwhile new body purchase unless a whole collection of expensive quality lenses for a system is already owned. Move on folks, the camera companies certainly have. These things are dinosaurs of the camera world.

Your ability to compell and engage with just one frame. To improve the lives others with their delight to your effort, and craft, and art. The equipment Is a small consequence to you as the creator. Whether a Smartphone, point and shoot, film camera, DSLR, or Mirrorless. Where are you in 2024? Have you become obscelete?
