I want to express my deep gratitude to Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer for using their remarkable talent to document such an important chapter of gay history. Their portrayal not only beautifully captures the resilience of love in the face of oppression but also powerfully conveys the heartbreaking consequences faced by both gays and the straight people who love them. Their performances resonated deeply, reminding us of the courage and tragedy inherent in that experience.
I was really moved when Jonathan poured Matt's water into a cup FIRST before he poured his own. The respect and familiarity shown MONTHS after they filmed together was amazing.
It was beautiful to see the love between these two characters. When you truly love someone & must remain apart, it is heartbreaking no matter who you are.
This podcast was very emotional for me listening to Tommy ask questions and listening to these two beautiful men explain how they played these characters. They really put their everything and emotions into it to bring these characters to life. It brought back memories of a very sad time in my life in the mid 80's as I worked in the virology department of a northern New Jersey hospital. There were so many AIDS patients from New Jersey and New York. Most all very prominent men and a few women. It was overwhelming at times and I would be lying if I didn't say when I left at night that I sat in my car many times and just cried because I could easily have been one of them. We have come so far with drugs for the HIV and keeping it undetectable most times but back then 6 months was a long time to watch someone fade away before your eyes. This was before computers and each patient's lab work had to be added to their chart on the back of the doors of their rooms. I got to talk and know so many of them from the Arts in New York . I admit I had never heard of some of them before till they came in for treatment. They were wonderful, brilliant, talented, and so scared and terrified. I listened to their fears and to the stories of their lives which were quite interesting. Kudos to Matt and Jonathan on a job well done. It reminds me of how so very far we have come and the ones we lost along the way fighting for our equality and acceptance.
I was a nurse mostly on the outskirts of the AIDS crisis because of the areas I worked in but this brings me right back to that time. I don't know if I'll have the courage to watch. I'm trying
@@pamstuckey8349 please watch it, it took courage back then to deal with the every day issues of having HIV/Aids when it was not talked about and people were shunned. A sad time in history for sure. You have the courage in you to watch it. 💜
That 70’s scene also showed Hawk couldn’t heal with Lucy because she wasn’t the love of his life. Lucy could heal and needed Hawk through that but Hawk needed Tim because that’s who Hawk can let go and be his most honest self with. So beautiful to watch!!
In a way, Matt IS Hawk and Jonny IS Tim. One can be Neil or Jamie or Donovan or other, & the other Fiyero or Anthony or Dr. Loomis or other, but for me, their BEST roles, so far, have been HAWK AND TIM. They've made HISTORY because they FELT it. God bless them both!♥♥
16:39 so neglecting someone’s emotion not understanding the weigh of Tim’s word, undermining and belittling his words/beliefs especially when his crying is a ‘survival technique’ ?!. Why are they sugar coating Hawks behaviour in every interview ? It was mean and selfish for Hawk to say that and got nothing to do with survival Hawk lacks empathy as obviously shown him misleading and manipulating Tim. Which he changed in the 80s where he was so concerned just because Tim made some noise while sleeping imagine if he cried.
Don't think it's sugarcoating...just acknowledging the source of Hawk’s limitations...the fear and determination that drives him...without judgment. Actor's empathy
@@MaggieHarris-w3f ‘Actors empathy’ what does that mean ? Different way of empathising? Maybe I misunderstood? if Hawk slapped Tim’s face while he was crying will they say the same thing that it’s a survival technique? Because neglecting Tim’s emotion and calling the religion Tim have been believing for his entire life and been devoted an illusion can cause so much pain and confusion. Hawk was harsh to Tim and not considering of his feeling at all at that moment and I think they’re not speaking about it sugarcoating his behaviour. You can acknowledge the source of his limitation and empathise but also with not denying the damage he’s doing, sugarcoating. What he did was selfish and not right in that scene.
The characters are apart of the silent generation. The generation who fought in WWII, whose fathers fought in WWI, survived the Great Depression, etc. They're the generation of endurance, not feelings. You can't apply present day understanding to that level of survival.
@@ShelbyBaby27 being apart of the Silent Generation means people conforming to the system for safety and not fighting back , How is this related to Hawk not consoling Tim and not empathising in fact he was being mean, Hawk consoled Lucy when she was crying why he can’t do the same to Tim? Hawk was traumatised and was emotionally unavailable and was narcissistic and treated Tim really bad.
It’s about understanding the society Hawkins and Tim were in and seeing how that shaped them. Hawkins was trying to survive in a world where everyone was against queer people in a much more dangerous way than they are today. He 100% would have lost everything if he didn’t hide like he did. He also already had a first love that most likely had a part on how he acted towards Tim; and how loving Tim terrified him to the point where he wouldn’t be able to hide anymore. He was a broken man in a world full of hate and prejudice and Tim made him feel things he had pushed away to feel safe and in control of his life. He wasn’t a great guy, but he was also a victim of the times. Hawkins was also full of love, but he felt like he couldn’t express it until it was too late. He became the villain as a surviving mechanism and not because he just got off on hurting people.

So much “good “ came out for so many reasons because of this dynamic series..
A long time coming and a big act to follow ❤❤❤❤❤❤
