- Today we’ll be looking over the best vertical mobility abilities that players can use in the game, or abilities that allow your character to move in ways that are different from a normal run speed increase. And also we won’t be looking at toys, profession items, or zone gear items, since they could make another video on their own. These abilities are very handy when trying to get somewhere up high or low without taking fall damage, and this video was written while the writer was trying to reach treasures in Zereth Mortis before flying was available.

A major downside to Door of Shadows that was unsaid: Once the next expansion comes out it will more than likely be gone just like nearly every borrowed power system abilities.
Question is: How do they want to explain that?
"Our powers don't work outside the Shadowlands now that the rift is closed"?
@@Gebirges That is absolutely what will happen. It was actually very late into the PTR before the xpac launched that covenant abilities didn't work outside the Shadowlands at all. If they were willing to have that restriction during the xpac, they absolutely will after the xpac is over.
In an interview they did say they want us to "Take powers from the shadowlands with us" This may mean the covenant abilities will come forward with us in some capacity, but we will have to see in a couple weeks!

Leap of Faith: Honorable mention you Death Grip if you have a DK friend you can duel or fight in PvP that are on a higher spot. Very niche but it can be useful.
For demonology warlocks, i miss metamorphosis from MOP. When the seagulls would bug on the Timeless Isle, meteor and metamorphasis was the only safe way down
Miss it a lot too, metamorph was an amazing ability and really should come back speaking holy paladin and holy priest can coexist.
The green fire meta was so sick, and the demonic leap which when used from a high cliff made you into a meteor was amazing.
i remember when paladins could turn into an angel back in MoP,i was always imagining fights between Demo locks and those angel paladins
They still can, their vengence gives them the angelic wings still, and the "guardian" form which turns them into an actual angel is still a thing, but its just protection. Which I am surprised still has not received a visual update and still uses an extremely old model.
@@hirumaredx No idea why they removed meta from locks they draw the power from the same source as DHs so it didnt make much sense but yeah they couldve atleast left it and reworked it abit and made it be "the caster metamorphosis" while DHs having the melee capabilities.
Ive tried it only few times on a private server i believe but it was fun to pop people with pyros.
The best vertical ability I ever had was barkskin. For a very long time using it made you unable to die from fall damage. I've jumped all the way down from Hyjal to Felwood and survived.
I remember with Leap of Faith, how many times my guilds priest have dragged me into AOE dmg ( lava, pools of green stuff, etc ) because i was AFK before a boss fight
You know what? I'm gonna speak for the priests and say: We fucking loved it. We would do it again. Every-damn-time.
Sorry not sorry, that was one of the main reasons we stuck with healing. The other main reason being power.

I'd love to see more raid related videos, maybe even an extension to the best raids in WoW, since I wonder what BFA and Shadowlands have done to these lists. I feel like both Nathria, Eternal palace, and SotFO are quite well liked.
I think some honorable mentions you missed were monk abilities. Transcendence might require you to have already been somewhere high up, but being able to instantly teleport back to that high spot on such a short cooldown, and without needing line of sight, is pretty useful. wsg flag room is probably the best example of this spell's potential.
Zen Flight is basically a year-round broomstick mount that offers a surprising amount of utility in world pvp. If you need to reset, you can make distance with rolls/transc/flying serpent kick and then immediately float up once you leave combat instead of casting a mount. Since it's instant cast, you can also save yourself from fall damage, or if you want to heal mid-air, you can use expel harm/healing elixirs and reactivate Zen Flight repeatedly without having to go near the ground (maybe useful in wpvp).
There's also Mighty Ox Kick, the brewmaster pvp talent. Even though you aren't the one benefiting from the vertical movement, you can send people absolutely flying. I like kicking people on top of Goldshire's inn during duels :)
leap of faith can also be used by shadow. also I remember when it was added in MoP you could use it on non party member was so fun trolling ppl.
It was added in Cata. And party/raid group restriction was added quite quickly
When you started talking about Demonic Gateway, I got surprises because I remembered being quite disappointed with it.
Turns out I only remember the version from early Pandaria. Long cast time, charges and requiring pathing makes it significantly different
i dunno why you gave Grappling Hook such a minor mention. Its one of the best vertical climbing tools in the game. When content is ground mount only, the hook allows me to reach places or treasures etc that are normally impossible to reach for everyone else. It also doesn't suffer from line of sight issues. You can legit climb mountains with just the hook. No other ability lets you do that.

Leap of faith is nice because on my guilds first time downing sylvanas I fell into the crack between a bride and the chain and the priest saved me.
Underrated vertical mobility ability: fel rush for havoc dh. Most people think of it as a horizontal movement ability, but if the place you're trying to go up has even a hint of a slope, you can use collision to get it to launch you vertically when combined with double jump oftentimes to get significantly higher than just double jump + glide would get you, and get you to places that infernal leap wouldn't have gotten you if you swapped to vengeance. Underrated in a bunch of cases for vertical mobility.
Every time I see Leap of Faith mentioned, I want to play Heroes of the Storm again. I used to play _a lot_ of Anduin. I wasn't very good, but it was still fun. ^^
Shadowstep is great, I loved doing it when I was lagging behind in a dungeon or had to get out of an aoe really fast. Nyoom!

An honorable mention should be said back to when warlocks had metamorphosis because they also had a leap while transformed, they also had a charge if they sacrificed their fel guard

the outlaw rogues grappling hook is so good to me. used it many times.
Unless I missed it, I'm shocked you didn't include the survival hunter 'Harpoon' ability, I was using it fairly often in ZM before flying to pull myself up to certain spots that had a mob near it
Kind of expected a honorable mention to The Warlocks Demonic Circle teleport, used to be able to use it with Eye of Kilrog to place it in hard to reach spots and if flying was allowed in the area but you didn't have it unlocked you could use it to climb over mountains as the eye could fly even if you couldn't. But this was an old exploit that wasn't around long.
I understand not putting Blink in for not being a vertical Ability per say, however it is very useful to negate fall damage much like the goblin rocket jump

I think something notable to point out about Heroic Leap vs Grappling Hook (and maybe others? I wouldn't know...) is that Heroic Leap requires a valid path, Grappling Hook works from any point to any other point.

Death Grip. And great on Rocket Jump. Saved my life in High Moubtain because I just kept falling off or jumping off.
Door of shadows reminds me off the rogue teleport back in early WoD
SV Hunter's harpoon should be added on the same spot as charge. They're more or less the same ability.

FR though, harpoon is so awesome and even better than charge sometimes. Using the Terms Of Engagement talent adds even more fun!
@@hirumaredx They started resurfacing in pve before the AoE revert on most classes cause they were the only uncapped class and it quickly went down the drain after they reverted aoe changes.
Also Bicmex made it pretty popular in PvP this expansion cause its arguably one if not the strongest melees in 2s.

What is the name of the music you're using at the start? I've heard you use it multiple time but I can't find a name for the life of me.
An honorable mention for me would be glyphed eye of the kilrogg that used to let it fly and allow you to place your demonic circle to then teleport to. I was able to use it to scale mountains and gain server first zen master archeologist back in MOP which is to this day one of my favorite wow memories.
That was removed, also it only worked in zones you can fly in, which means it was only really useful if you didnt have flying unlocked yet.
6:22 I think Outlaw had Shadowstep at one point (maybe Legion?) but it was changed and taken from Outlaw.
I miss the old animation for demonic warlock. It took longer to establish once casted but looked a lot better + the vestibule slowing sound it made.
Haha this dude is like the only one who hasn’t even mentioned all of WoW troubles lately. And I have to admit it’s nice. Wow needs a TON of work to get back to where it needs to be. But it’s nice to see someone who isn’t like “well it’s bad off to FF we go”
Leap Faith you should have added a top 10 troll abilities like many warlocks summons in funny side, and the pet bomb that caused the Corrupted Blood epidemic

Leap of Faith was the best thing i had, back in WoD when i started playing Disc Priest.
I killed so fucking many Guildies while doing Dungeons. I mean, it's their fault if they run off the cliff / bridge / whatever. It's not my fault i'm standing RIGHT AT THE EDGE. Naaaah.
Were they angry? Yes.
Was i happy? Yes.
There's also the Pandaria meteor item that shoots you up into the sky at an incredible speed allowing you to traverse any map within seconds.
You could've included the Druids flapping in their moonkin form, but thats really the only thing I can think of right now
Flapping only slows your fall, it does not let you gain height

There is a trick with shadowstep called rogue elevator. When you shadowstep on 3person mount ppl on the mount shadowstep with you. It was rly useful on eye of ashara dungeon when druid could jump off ship to 3rd boss and rogue would tp rest of the party to him :)
There was a time in MoP when you could use Heroic Leap to get to anywhere you are in range, it did not care for a line of sight... they changed that later on sadly
since you said blink is not a vertical movement but rocket jump is, lemme say something very interesting I found out when I used to play on a shitty buggy private server... blink is basically rocket jump without the animation and it's instant, hut you move in an arc nor straight ahead, which explains why you go up stairs instead of standinf still
Survival hunter harpoon could also be added to this list as it works like warrior's charge ability.
except it's directly better, longer range, goes through most terrain unlike charge
shadow priests can also use leap of faith btw!

What about survival hunter's harpoon ?
You can use Disengage/Vengeful Retreat to dash forward by jumping and spinning 180º, then using the ability.
They go over that in the video when he says "you can turn around, but unless you're proficient it can be difficult to aim"
I played Combat Rogue in Wrath. I don’t remember Killing Spree having the movement boost. Saying that, it WAS like 14 years ago..
Although Demonic Gateway might work across open world gaps and pits, attempting the same in instances will more often than not return the error "You can't use that here." This is especially irritating when solo-farming legacy dungeons and raids, where this kind of movement limitations should be lifted for content neither scaled up to nor is at character's level.
Meanwhile me with my venthyr goblin war engineer: Door of Shadows, Charge, Heroic Leap, Rocket Launch and Goblin Glider goes nyooooommmmmmm
I genuinely hope we keep covenant abilities, I can't function as a non-outlaw rogue without door of shadows. Saved my ass so many times especially since you don't take damage for the last few seconds of casting.
flight form?
I play a DK and I picked Venthyr first and later changed to Maldraxxus. Dropping the Door of Shadows ability was the hardest choice I’ve made in game.
Channel manager is a hardcore necrolords, but playing a warlock with zero movement speed benefits, they eventually caved and moved to nightfae, and have never gone back. Being invincible was great, but the movement speed buff is far too good.
@@hirumaredx Honestly, I would have gone back immediately if it wasn’t for that little “You’re betraying your convent!” punishment stuff they have. Sucks so much to go though the same stuff twice.
That stuff is gone now, has been since 9.1.5 which is good.

heroic leap also cancels any fall damage from any height, I was leveling a warrior through stormheim and after the fight with skovald at the top of that big tower I just said "hold my beer" jumped off and prayed I was able to activate heroic leap before I hit the ground. it's kinda like mlg bucket jumping in Minecraft lmao
Disengage is a great ability, as long as you don't disengage off of an extreme height...like Mount Hyjal. Ow
My only issue with Door of Shadows is that it can't be used while moving.
The Shaman used to have an ability similar to Disengage, I believe you were moving forward, instead of backwards. Same effect. I used to cast it last second before i hit the ground if i was falling. Too bad they removed it.
Feral Lunge maybe? Enhancement shaman still have it as a talent option. But it's in the same row with a raid CD utility and a soft pseudo- cheat death which is why many don't use it.

Grappling Hook is Door of shadows with a lower cooldown and more range.
blink is used to reduce fall damage, use it before you land and you take no damage.
Also it snaps you to the ground even when you're really high in the air
Having #1 and #2 has made getting treasures in Zereth Mortis so much easier.
I mean... You can use mages blink to teleport safely down to the ground as well if youre falling
you forgot to mention the synergy between moonkin wildcharge and flap, you can travel insane distances with that

That can only be used in zones with flying, which well then you can just use a flying mount.

I wish Vault of Heavens was a talent instead of a legendary. I could see so many uses for it. Also surprised no mention of levitate and slow fall.
They help you get down, but not up, which is what most of these abilities are useful for.
I would say blink is more useful than most of these. You can go up hills instantly teleport to the ground. Break out of roots if Shimmer isn't talented, still can Shimmer if rooted. Save yourself from falling off platforms. It's crazy strong

gonna say, I'm gonna miss my Door of Shadow on my DK when DF hits.
Double jump + glide should have been #1 or 2. No other ability is as game breaking as that. There are sooo many instances that are broken by this ability & old instances that had to be patched because of it. Remember how Demon hunters could skip most of Black temple by jumping up the chains after the 2nd boss? Or how you could skip the Shadow of Zul miniboss in king's rest?
You can go ahead and add Heroic Leap as the best and worst at this.
Rocket Jump is why I will never play anything but Goblins. I don't care about how much better a passive is, the rocket jump is so ingrained my my enjoyment of the game that I can't give it up
Coupled with posthaste, Disengage is possibly the strongest movement ability to ever exist in the game.

No demonic circle?? For me is the best Vertical Mobility of all time with no doubts, always remember Warsong Gulch just teleporting to the top of the flag base trolling all the tim,.
You have to place it before hand, which means you can only use it to go back to places you have already been, not to places you have yet to get to.

No mention of the engineering item gnomish gravity well???? Engineers can literally go infinitely high, and then use their glider to get forward motion. The overheat doesn't proc often enough to matter, so you can easily get to the world height cap

I stopped playing WoW in Wrath of the Lich King. I am surprised, does the Monk class have no vertical mobility ability at all?
They 2 actually, one baseline called "roll" which can be upgraded to "chi torpedo through talents, and "Rising serpent kick" for Windwalker monks". Idk why it was ignored. My guess is that those abilities are horizontal, can't be used on air, they travel using the ground.
They have 3 spells with some vertical mobility. Transcendence let's monks drop a spirit where they're standing, then they can use Transcendence: Transfer to teleport to it on a 40ish second cooldown. It requires the monk to have already been somewhere, but it's the only class that can teleport upwards without line of sight on the location, besides warlock demonic circle I think. Kinda niche but useful in WSG flag room when you can jump down and then teleport right back up, over and over.
They also have a special ability called Zen Flight which is basically a meme but it lets them instantly mount on a cloud and float around if they're out of combat. It's the only way besides engineering that a monk can save themselves from fall damage, I believe. If you need to escape in world pvp, you can use your horizontal mobility like roll/flying serpent kick to exit combat and then use the instant cast mount to reach somewhere inaccessible, like the top of a building, instead of having to cast your mount and potentially getting attacked before you can summon it.
You can also use their horizontal abilities to clear gaps that couldn't otherwise be jumped, but this is pretty damn niche. If you roll or flying serpent kick off an edge, you keep the velocity of the roll until you hit the ground, so it can send you flying depending on the height of the edge you rolled from.
Those are horizontal, not vertical.

Vertical is up and down.
Also transcendence only works if you already have been to that location, so it cant really be used vertically, it works the same way as warlocks demonic circle. you place a marker below you, and using the ability teleports you to that marker.
The only case it can be used for verticality is if you use it, jump off a cliff, then use it to teleport back up. However it wont help you get on top of that cliff in the first place.
