There's a space in the market for a straight talking drum machine and user-sample-player, and the FGDP-50 might be just the kind of fresh air we need.

Got mine as soon as they dropped in the UK shops, but I understand supplies are very limited now. First off, this is an amazing finger drumming unit. You get well over a thousand high quality multi-layered percussion and fx sounds, digital effects built-in, and the pads are very sensitive and also feature both velocity and poly aftertouch. The true potential of this is being able to use your own samples via a USB stick, and of course as a midi controller. The styles bit is a gimmick though, as you cannot change the chords or patterns other than mute each part. They are a bit of fun to practice your finger drumming (which I think is the purpose of them), but no good as a backing band or composition tool as they are fixed and can't be edited. Whilst there's no built-in midi recorder, you can retrigger the sounds and pads. What impressed me a lot though is the depth of configuration on board. You can adjust velocity curves, aftertouch, group triggering across multiple samples, change the midi configuration down to pad level, create registrations, send program or CC change messages from some of the pads, and so on. You can trigger the internal sounds via midi or use it as a controller with your DAW, but there's only USB midi and not 5-pin DIN. Oh and you can also route the audio output over USB for digital quality sound (and the other way into the device). There is an audio input and it does feature a rechargeable battery and an impressive little built-in speaker. You can also record your performance as CD quality audio to the USB stick, but not as a midi file. There again most people will be using this with some kind of DAW. For the price though it's an amazing bit of kit. The cheaper FGDP-30 offers most of the same sounds and midi features, but without the display (it uses a voice announcement instead) and misses the extra row of RGB buttons. The FGDP-30 also does not support user samples - there seems to be plenty of stock of the 30 but the 50 is out of stock everywhere. Overall I think Yamaha have come up with a fabulous product here for the home studio musician, and as a fun instrument for budding finger drummers.

Just got mine a week ago used it a few times seems really cool so far. Just have to learn to record with it and hoping like other drum machine units it plays back in a 'quantized' fashion.

This looks really cool! After many years of failing to program decent beats on drum machines, I became a half-decent finger drummer after I bought a looper. I love my Roland handsonic but never figured out how to program beats on it and still looking for the right loooer to use with it. I'm not sure at this point if it can be programmed.
Does this thing have a phrase sampler to record loops or do you have to program beats like other drum machines? Also, like the handsonic, is there any way to add a foot pedal or 2 to trigger a bass drum or control the hi hats?
Thanks for watching the videos :-) it’s not a sampler as such but you can import wave files and assign them to the pads. And yes you can attach a foot pedal to do various functions. You might even be able to attach two of them, I can’t quite remember.
Thanks for the video. I have a question. Does the model 50 have the voice assistance like the model 30? I understand the 50 has the screen, but wondering whether it also has voice assistance for the menus. Thank you.
Glad you liked the video but I'm afraid I don't know the answer. All I can suggest is looking up the manual online, just enter the model and put PDF at the end, works every time :)

Thank you for the jam with such a variety of sounds and styles! Is it possible to have polyphony on the same pad, or does each pad always choke itself?
That’s a good question I’ll look into it
it will certainly allow for both, the rides wouldn’t make sense otherwise.
I certainly haven't seen anything about multiple voices on a single pad in the manual or the videos published so far. On the other hand, there is nothing abnormal about a cymbal choking itself when a new note strikes in. This is what real cymbals do. 😅 Still, polyphony on single pads would be very cool.
Sounds a bit like some of the song demos were conde by Level 42 or Jamirqai lol! I hope I can just have drums only plays as I write my own songs without melodic loops. Yu were playing New Order at 5:09 LOL!
Yep it can play roar drum tracks. You can also sequence your own. Correct about new order!
So the audio input does not record to thumb drive to then upload one shots to pads?

I think it was only midi out. I could be wrong, might be worth googling to make sure :)
They should have made stereo speakers on for both sides ☹️ at least on fdgp 50

How do i actually record the pathces from my keyboard like what software do i need for that
Apparently you can do it just using normal computer file management and the SD card but so far I’ve had no luck with that
@@gearfacts yeah my roland rs70 doesn't have sd card insert or a slot media card insert but it has a floppy disk drive sucks there expensive sucks I ain't got no money for floppy disks and a floppy disk drive with a USB to connect to my windows 9 or 10 ish computer
This seems to be the first product actually aimed at finger drummers. Sadly, Yamaha does not seem to have seen fit to send it out to any of them. The sounds in this video and the context they were used in reminded me of general MIDI units from the mid 1990s.
You can load samples into it though, so the potential should be pretty vast.

I really liked the DR-202. It had a much grittier vibe but it couldn't upload samples unfortunately.

That is a no no for me, I stopped to buy toys with built in battery because in few years they become obsolete. I know, you can hack and replace the cells, but, hey, make just room for removable batteries or use a usb power bank
