"In this next video we're going to break down classic works of art, here's Michaelangelo's David, yeah I thought it would be more complex but as you can see it's just a piece of stone with a guy carved in it, here's an arm, that's his face, super simple."
I'd watch that
@@alexwilcoxx I read it as a positive comment - you've done an amazing job of breaking down a great track into it's components and C T is suggesting that your skills could be extended to making renaissance masterpieces look easy
@@robbryant7625 my bad.
lmao
why have you been listening for 30 years and watching track breakdowns if you think its bad@petetestube2904
I can’t count the number of times I’ve listened to this the past 10 years, and never noticed that blue sample in the track until seeing it isolated in front of me.
that's what's up
It sounds just like a mosquito flying closer and closer to your face
right
I always assumed it was the same sample as the very beginning but sped up
Blue sample?
The weird little sample you hear at 7:36 is a sped up, higher pitch of the starting sound you hear. Pretty sure that itself is a filtered vocal sample of Richard saying “bubbly bubbly bubbly bubbly”
Thank you for the chainlink fence comment I was waiting for someone to say this. For me it’s not a garbage can however, it’s a chair being moved. I also think the percussion is scissors snipping. Alberto Balsam is a shampoo so it sort of paints a picture of a barbershop.
i've heard somewhere that the "garbage can" sound is actually an old ammunition box
It’s an ammunition box . RDJ is a collector of military hardware.
The scissors are actually a sample of a lighter
7:37 this sound is the same as "bubbly bubbly bubbly bubbly" at the beginning, but faster.
NIce ears u got
as* not "then"
The 'other perc' is a cigarette lighter and the 'garbage' is supposedly some sort of heavy metallic crate getting dragged/pushed. :)
I know nothing about producing, and I usually don’t even listen to music like this. But I loved Alberto Balsalm so much after hearing it on Spotify! This video helped me appreciate the song SO much more!
excellent
Thanks for doing this! it shows that even if your track sounds simple and doesn't have a huge amount of layers you can still make something with a lot of feeling.
And Richard has said the "Garbage" sound is actually an Ammo Box lid closing
Glad you enjoyed :)
Do you have a source for the interview or statement? I just really love this song a lot and would be delighted to hear anymore info about it. Thanks
@@miteh2180 It was and interview for Roderick Stanley, which doesn't seem to exist any more. The quote was, 'it was opening a lid on an ammunition box with a wireless microphone inside'. But given how Richard likes to joke with people, I'd take with a grain of salt.
Wow you are the guy who remaked come to daddy instrumental 12 years ago
@@9abriell Indeed! I need to do another version lol
I read many years ago The chain link sound was created by Richard tapping on a radiator in his studio.love this tune.great vid.
There is also something very uncanny about the bass part : if you listen carefully, you will notice that the rythm of the bass does not repeat itself. There are some slight weird variation throughout the song !
Love to see/hear people geeking over this mesmerising song. Cool video!
love these videos cause now I have full understanding of a track on the first listen. nice.
So glad you enjoy it :) do you produce?
@@alexwilcoxx beginning to! lots of sounds in my head but going through the grind of learning instruments and big boy ableton
@@samuraijack9532 Dope! Feel free to send me anything if you want feedback. And if you ever want to do a zoom lesson to speed up the process then let me know :)
Thank you for breaking this song down❤ its really rare to see aphex songs being analysed
I love this song so much and really needed help w basic arrangement stuff so big thanks man
of course! I teach lessons over zoom too in case you ever want to get something more specific to what you're working on :)
Phenomenal. This track like didn't even make sense in my brain before, like I don't know how to describe it. It was magical, I couldn't understand how it worked. Very cool to see
Great analysis! One little detail I noticed is that the little sample that plays during the B section seems to be a pitched up version of the voice that plays at the beginning of the track!
i want literally only the "garbage" sound sample, i need itttt
Dude, incredible video!! Thanks so much for it. I loved just seeing how simply beautiful it is!
hell yeah
Hey, I don't know if you missed it or not, but at around 11:50 that same "weird sample" plays subtly in the background. Love this video though, Alberto Balsalm is probably my favorite song of all time as of now.
Interesting, Aphex is my inspiration for do IDM!
Just found your channel yesterday .. thanks for the uploads. I've got some watching to do! :)
the second A section is reminiscent to Mining Melancholy from donkey kong country 2. well at the very least it is to me. But now that I look it up this song is older by a few months!
Thanks for the insight! You're really good at explaining/describing this song
one of the best ableton channels for starting producers. thanks a lot!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed this vid. If you're ever interested in private lessons then you can find that here: patreon.com/alexwilcox
Just a comment about apparent snare change @17:35 . Seems to me the snare is the same, just the reverb has simply been switched off giving it a snappy release.
To my ears, the use of reverbs individually, some short and some long, over most of the instruments, is a primary finesse in this track.
similar thoughts here too
DUDE ITS OBVIOUSLY A CHAIR BEING SLED
!!!!!
@@alexwilcoxx :p
completely obviously
Or an ammunition box squeaking, listen to the click sound it sounds like a shptgun being loaded
@@rokochoco6152 I... uh... pretty farfetched to think aphex twin would go to the trouble of getting an ammo box squeaking and a shotgun reloading sample instead of... sliding a chair and recording it, but hey you do you my man
I really appreciate what you do, keep up please, thank you
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed this vid. If you're ever interested in private lessons or supporting on Patreon then you can find that here: patreon.com/alexwilcox
This is pure gold, thank you!
I think the 'garbage' sound is actually the squeak of a loud chair being moved.
Would love to see a breakdown of Objekt - The Goose That Got Away
interesting i was wondering about the chord progression especially the second part has really beautiful chords.
The "Garbage" sound is apparently the sound of Richie moving his chair XD
"There's gonna be something weird coming up". With AFX? Surely not......

@Kristopher Briggs yup, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for months myself :)
this is so fascinating!
Hey man, thank you a lot for this video, is it still possible u think that you have the project?
Patreon.com/alexwilcox
Would have been nice to breakdown the key and chords created.
You can get the midi in the description or email me for the project file in case you want to look at them!
@@alexwilcoxx i don't see a link for the midi in the description
Chair goes brrrrrrrrrr
indeed
@@alexwilcoxx indeed👍
no way he can replicate those drum parts, I thought. The other parts are relatively easy to replicate but the drums? no chance.
WTF he did it. Subbed.
I didn't replicate them. I just mapped them out on midi to talk about macro-arrangement. :/ lol thanks for the sub though!
very nice vid. thanks for the break down. is the midi file still around?
wow!! Thank you!!
Just what I was looking for thanks!
great video thank u
for sure :)
please do On by him as well
where I can get this project?
420th like, S/O 2 Aphex Twin fans group on Facebook.
I think its a rusty shed door
this is soooooo accurate damnn
that's cause I used the original audio. Just mapped midi to talk arrangement
Do you have the stems anywhere to download so i can practice mixing?
what samples did you use i need to know
nice
great analyse, can i get the midi file?
Redpill VII
It's not garbage, it's clearly a chair!
!!!
What vsts were used in this song?
it was probably a sampler with effects
this song is from 1994 there wernt VSTs
can you send on the project bro?
midi link dont work no more
You didn't do the midi, you didn't recreate the sounds. What did you actually do?
I mapped the tracks out in a way that looks like it's accurate so I can then talk about macro-arrangement.
..overthinking it..
..I must admit, post haste, you break it down very well, at that moment enjoying hearing this piece enjoying listening, unconcerned about composition, I feel humbled that you even notice my comment, lable it "constructive crittic" now, I like & subscribe
