- Hello everyone, in this video I will we looking at a Portal 2 mod called "Portal: Forbidden Testing Tracks". this mod piqued my interest because it had mostly negative reviews right after release, lets see if the review were right in this "walkthrough".

people describe this mod as if they felt physicial pain while playing it, but really this was just a mod from a passionate portal fan with great ideas in mind making up a mod with the limited experience he had in portal modding. Really I think this guy could make great mods in the future!

yea but it hurts, I feel like there should have been a little less scope to focus on detail a little more

Yeah I really don't want the dev to feel discouraged from this. Most people wouldn't have the patience or even skill to develop their own Portal mod! That's something! I'm excited to see what they make in the future - hopefully they learn from this
Initially, I thought this was Timmy's first mod.
But as it kept going, started to realize more and more it's just Timmy playing with his portal toys basically. The core concepts are decent and refreshing, the assets from Portal 1 _could_ have been integrated more seamlessly... but all the miniboss challenges and the constant swapping of mechanics, only to never see them again...
Maybe a bit more polish, ironing out of the story beats, and perhaps some critiques on art design---
wait, twin sister?
"my other test subject" is chell, but your player model is the same so. random reason to explain why
@@frank_calvert Chell's lost twin
For sure the mod maker needed help actually constructing this, but the ideas here are absolutely phenomenal! A 2nd test subject going through WHILST Chell is escaping? The one chamber with the Mel gun that you had to run through. THE ZERO-POINT GUN AND THE FIZZLER FUN?! THE CHAMBER REBOOTINF AFTER WHEATLY TAKES CONTROL?!?! HELLO?!?!
Edit: Aperature having faulty products? Absolutely! SECRET TESTING MOON BASE? Why didn’t I think that?!?!?!
It’s not at all bad I think this guy that created the mod wanted to put something together but didn’t have experience or help so he just essentially said ‘fuck it’ and went with it
They took bunch of good ideas, mixed them all together into one big cake and then put the cake into an oven, except it wasn't an oven but the incinerator room.
Moon base I could see existing, it's aperture after all
I believe at 18:54, Glados is trying to say "Prepared coconut pecan frosting."
If only he had done play testing it wouldn’t have been so bad. As valve has thought us, play testing is the most important thing in every game
Would you trust me if I told you that this mod had more than 6 playtesters?
And yes, I am not kidding.
@@HyperDashYT ??.??.???, did he even listen to them… sigh
@@HyperDashYT naaaaahhhhhh
@@HyperDashYTI doubt that
They are credited in the ending credits
So much cool stuff in here I'd personally be proud to have achieved as an amateur game dev, duct taped together into a playable story with some QA issues... Much as I'm glad I don't have to play it now, I kinda feel you're getting more than what you pay for with this free mod.
This feels like a workable proof of a strong concept. The ideas are great and proven for the most part - little more of this, little less of that, a few runs in the de-jankifier and I'd say you've got an honestly great game.
Here's the breakdown of how I'd spend money fixing it:
- Subtitles.
- No borked AI voices - get good impressionists like Harry101UK - or simply retool the story with original characters, keeping all the cool changes of setting and general shape of the game
- Unify visual style, obviously
- De-glitch the new guns
- De-glitch a lot of stuff
- More tests for the new guns
- Generally iterate out gameplay issues (many of which you raised) through multiple rounds of playtesting - cut unfun/basically impossible puzzles etc; more stuff fo the cool new guns
- Release
- A period of maintenance to get it into a lasting working state
- Move on with a bag of tasty street cred
It'd be nice to have a way to make money off a mod like this, this kind of stuff takes a lot of work...
Honestly though, if I was the dev, I'd retool everything original into a whole new game with completely original assets - i.e. something I could sell. Maybe license the Source Engine (if that's a thing you can do), but what I'm saying is there's enough here to do a full Fifty-Shades and turn the fanfic into its own IP. I feel it's easily worth that.
Music was solid; core ideas were great; implementation proved the ideas can work... I'm glad the mod exists. Dev's one to watch out for. (No I'm not the dev lol)
Portal: Forbidden Quality Control
That's one way to say "None"
@@klaus.sfc01official30the Chikn nunget track was my favorite (it doesn’t exist)
Last time, in the PMaM Discord Server. Q15 will make the subtitles work on this mod (and yes, Q15 joined the server.) and Q15 said that there are different endings, idk if it's confirmed or not.
there are two endings yea, the other ending is triggered by looking at some papers on the ground for 10 seconds on the 1st space station moon map (had to decompile the map to figure it out). if you do this than at the end you don't die but G-man saves you and delivers some dialogue. I had all of this planned for the video but I felt it dragged the whole video for too long at the end so I cut it out
@@JukoYT I see..
@JukoYT Yknow, I watched this to the end and was really confused seeing the ending you got, not knowing there's two. I got the gman one by complete accident.
There are some really, really interesting ideas in here that I would love to see the light of day.
The bomb cubes, zero point gun for testing, time dilation, aim-able fizzling…
Especially going through the story at the same time as portal 2 and stories effecting each other.
ngl this mod needs to be remade. it alrrady has a base for what it wants to be. but it just needs to be remaked.
Not entiraly imo, just some sections. The 1st visit to old aperture is just clunky and unnecessary. It could easly be replaced with random test chambers that maybe introduce new testing elements
It just needs some work on cohesion. And maybe adjust the story beats so it's less Hunt Down the Freeman-y with its story going everywhere.
I do like the concept of behind half a step behind the maingame protagonist. Something Opposing Force and Blue Shift nailed.
However, where this and HDtF fail is that... they're using it too much. We don't need to play as a character related to the base game. We don't need to play as the character all over again, with a quick handwave as to why. Make us some other random soldier, some other random scientist (there's one mod that implies we play as Alyx's mother that did that well, so the core concept works in execution.... so long as you don't just invent someone with zero mention to the plot)
For an extra example; Half-life 1 expansions have us play as random people connected to Freeman's Unforseen Consequences. OpFor has us play a Marine who was tasked with cleanup. Blueshift is one of the many faceless guards with many of the faceless scientists. Decay is literally Gordon's bosses who kept operating behind the scenes, even after The Cascade.
Plenty of mods have us play as unnamed scientists, guards, marines, other people who wandered onto HEV suits, PCV vests... and they (most of the time at least) still tell a decent story as you follow or hunt Freeman.
Point is, you can still tell a story that takes place within a universe without resorting to playing as John Freeman, Master Chief Petty Officer Freeman 117, Adrian's brother, Chell's twin, Barney's clone...
-What ideas should we include?
-Yes
i think the hate is justifiable but not excusable. People act like they are entitled to a good mod, without realising that they don't have to play it if they don't want to, and that this mod existing doesn't mean another one won't. It would be perfectly reasonable if it was a paid mod, but all this is going to do is discourage the developer from publishing anything in the future, no matter how good it is
It's like the reviews for Portal: Prelude RTX, the reviews literally amount to "it's too hard", the game being too hard for you is not a valid argument for a bad review. The game wasn't meant to cater to all audiences, it was meant for people who have played a ton of modded maps and wanted something harder.
If this was on ModDB then it wont be so harsh on it but considering that they paid money to get this on steam is embarrassing. And that's why I won't even dare to put my mod on steam
i love watching his channel for the Portal 2 videos i think he should keep posting awesome fun videos
bro was complaining about how the paint gun is just copied from aperture tag but then didn't care about how the gravity gun is from halflife 💀💀💀
Wheatley is a former director because he, for a time, replaced Glados, in Portal 2. I guess that add him to the list of former directors, which is totally logic.
That being said, the mod in itself *sounds* quite good. The gameplay is clunky, the mechanics aren't polished at all, the level design is absent, but the atmosphere, the ideas, and the script, are totally spot on. Having other tools like the Gravity Gun, Liquid Gun and the Fizzler Gun really is refreshing. Some places, like the Aperture Science Office Maze, are totally spot on about what Aperture is probably looking like in the parts that were rebuild over and over and over with no thought about employees' wellcare. Just need more refining.
The Time Slowing gun made me think that, in the part where you're playing the map with the faith plates and the time slows down, it was you-from-the-future that activated the gun for some reason and impacted you-from-the-past. You didn't showed it to I guess it's not that at all, but that would have been fun ahah.
All in all, the mod just need good designers, good level designers, probably someone good with sounds, and a real dev. Everything else is to keep, pretty much.
I litteraly had a weird ass dream that was about a weird portal mod and watching this video just reminded me of it.
What was this mod like?
@@XanderW104 ok so basically In the dream my character woke up underground in a room with no lights and a view into a large room that has a "spire" going up, and then a core (I think) starts talking, I don't remember what but the next thing I remember is me in one of those testing spheres on a moving cart that falls, then it pans to a shot of a screen going from the original core into another core, I still have no idea if this predicted portal revolution in my brain.
Sorry I responded late, I just got the notification 2 months late
My thoughts on it were that in sections, it worked most of the time, but as a whole, it's incoherent, confusing and it just doesn't give you the immersion that you should get when playing it. I did give it a not recommended on Steam for now, but if the mod gets updated to fix most of the big issues with it, I might change my review.
honestly the opening sequence where you get sucked into a tube kinda reminds me of the early portal 2 demos
Yea it is kinda simmilar, tho there you atleast travelled through varied locations while here it us just a pipe with walls around it, except for one part
@@JukoYT true
I like the idea of a core that makes waffels.
i mean someone's gotta do it- how are you supposed to run an enormous testing facility without *waffles?*
@@JunieBee201 Exactly.
19:38 this is genius.
I did quite like that part
this mod has some good ideas and an interesting history, happening at the same time as the og portal 2, but it needs more polishing, like some things you said, it uses portal 1 & 2 and half life 2 assets, some weapons having too little screentime like the time gun or the fizzler gun, some test chambers need more play testing, make more intuitive the fire chase and other things that you mentioned on the video. In a nutshell, 8/10 on the idea, 5/10 on the execution
10:23 - This has got to be my favorite part in this video. Simply love it!
Portal's EP3 Closure mod
the gel gun was actually a planned gun for portal 2, so it's cool to see it in-game
"ah here, crispy HD picture"
Ме who's watching in 720p for some reason:
This is quite literally the Morbius of Portal Mods
i feel like this is a non-hammer modder using hammer for the first time, they did not know how to really use it, so i (personally) dont think this is that bad for a first-timer, usually you see like extremely obvious cheeze or 30 refrences to cake, the weird voicelines at the beginning were limited by what the author had, and thats fine, im fine with that, you cant take that away from them, they did good
this is not an encouragement for argument, but rather, an opinion, if you disagree, thats fine! i dont really care much if you disagree, but if you find a flaw in my opinion, feel free to share!
I want a mod for this, that polishes and makes it better like makes the paint gun model better and just generally make it a better mod
13:02 this idea was used in Portal Stories VR with the small device and pulling cubes toward you.
Do you mean Portal: In motion(PS VR)?
11:54 yeah i just used the skip button lol, at least the dev knew that it was a pretty large jump in skill required, and they added a skip button which just did the whole thing for you
10:25 every good sfm:
20:40 If you jump into the fire you will get final credits.
i like the darkviperau style "dawn of the ... run" very nice
Thx. The time remaining is the actual time untill the video ends, i dont think anyone noticed that lol
I like the idea of being set in when chell was out and following her footsteps and kind of things being a mess because of chell but it does need more planning and detail if he had experience and a team to work on this better I think it would be cooler
3:08 whats the name of the destruktion sound effect? Couldnt find it anywhere in the sound files...
Ngeruma as the cores voiceactor was a big bonus for me
saw this on steam as well the other day, i assumed it was just a new modder trying things out and unfortunately people just didn’t enjoy it.
4:04 This probably has something to do with the defective turrets having weird collision physics- it’s why you can skip the entire turret redemption section by making a turret elevator essentially
ayo Portal 3 looking bussin
😳
Still better than bayo 3
16:17 yeah that level made me constantly feel like i was going to turn around and there would just be a face, staring at me
Feels like they copied some test chambers from BEEMod and just made the mod without even testing it once. Even my own not published portal maps have been going through 5 rounds of testing already XD
guys its obvious, this is the next step of portal games. think about it: each one takes itself less seriously than the last.
Tbh i like it because it has its own ideas and takes place at portal 2
you just earned a sub holy jesus this is good content
10:24 this caught me so off guard lmao
If someone remake this with love and care I can see it being a good mod.
11:35 the core said :if you can try and get back to your...
I couldnt hear that last word clearly but i think it migh be iether
Testing
Or
Thing
I hope that helps
10:24 got me laughing so hard, i did play this mod and i swear i died like 20 times trying to do that jump...
So, this is "Hunt Down The Freeman" of Portal 2 mods, huh?
I like saic a lot and I love the ideas! This just needs some playtesting.
Yea it could still be a good mod if they just cut out some of the things, and polished up the remaining stuff
Literally the perfect way to describe this:
*And then everyone died. The end*
I think that the creator of this mod had a idea in the start of what was going to be made yet as it went on, it just was lost which led to the massive amount of Aperture Science devices being used that all could have had a mod to their own (the ones not already with).
I think that Saic was pretty underused with him only appearing at the start of the game and end of the game. There was a lot of potential for him like how Vergil in Portal Stories: Mel and Wheatley were used.
11:35 "*muffled* if you can, try and get back here to me"
The black portal looks so gothish! I would like to see Chell in the Goth Loly suit!
WHAT
Now I kinda want a real Portal x Splatoon mod.. game.. whatever. The paint gun looked a lot of fun.
It exists since 2014 actualy it is called Aperture Tag
As i think my mostly satirical overplayed review might have been sounding a bit too harsh i have to say that the mod allthough eh has some good stuff but lostly bad.
1. The music is good
2. The ideas are also there but the execution is just bad or in cases of something like the fizzle gun plain obsolete. Portal was always for me about having little and making alot out of it.
3. New items are creative but poor or in most cases not explained at all.
4. Layout of areas was bad, it was very easy for me to trap myself or break a map.
5. Story was nonexistent and very random.
6. The goddamn leak epilepsy chamber just WHY. (this is the only thing i cannot sugarcoat it is just plain bad as there is no epilepsy warning at the start of the game.)
7. The puzzles themselves were very bad not well thought out and had seemingly no playtesters or quality control.
In the end this mod tried to be everything at once with very little experience ending up in a very poor executed sludge of ideas and a facedrop with alot of poor reception.
As much as i'd like to i cannot give this mod anything above a 1/10 as there is so much better stuff in even the portal 2 workshop.
This mod should have started as hammer concepts in the workshop not a mod on the steam page as in the workshop case it wouldn't nearly have had as bad of a reception as on the steam store page which is connected to a certain level of experience and quality. I hope this modder can learn from the faillings of thia mod and maybe get some playtesters next time. I would gladly assist him with his next work and maybe sent some puzzle ideas his way.
Tell me your opinion on the mod if you'd like i am referring to anyone that may want to answer my comment. I would be happy to hear your ratings and opinions :)
makes me wanna do push-ups
playing the first couple levels has actually inspired me to try making some sort of hammer game thingy
Nice, go for it. Hammer mapping (altho it has its issues), is super fun
@@JukoYT I gave up after 5 minutes and went to do stuff in GZDoom builder instead
I will try to make something coherent at a later date
this mod actually has great potential. i think this mod could become one of the most popular and best mods out there if it got a remaster. atleast i hope that the dev stopped working on mods due to the negativity of the reviews. i hope this man finds out that his mod is actually great and just needs a remaster!
This is the o.W.n. of Portal. It's an actually fun and interesting concept, but it's poorly executed and promptly gets shat on. I love the vision behind this and want to see this improved because, genuinely, I would say it's an amazing experience and deserves a better fate.
ngeruma makes good videos👍
Yes!
7:39 during this timestamp, for brief time in this video, an unused music (Self Destruction) was playing
didn't know it was unused, just picked it from the files of the mod as I thought it sounded cool
13:00 that gravity thing comes from Portal VR mod
this is a performative art piece
I haven't played any Portal mods so I don't know what the usual standard of quality is, but this seemed like an overall decent experience for a free mod that i assume was made by like one guy? Like I've seen Actually Bad games and this is not that, there was a concept in mind and lots of creative ideas for game mechanics, it just fell victim to the typical shortcomings of an inexperienced game developer, such as a lack of cohesive direction, bugs, and relying on pre-existing assets. I think with a bit more polish this could be a pretty solid little fan game, and the dev seems pretty creative even if it wasn't all executed perfectly. Although I would recommend they just get a few fans to do impressions for the voice acting rather than using that difficult to understand AI, obviously it's not gonna be the same as the original voice actors but it'll at least make it easier to know what anyone is saying.
Depends on the mod, but standards on steam are ussualy higher (as you have to pay 100€ to upload there). But yea this mod has potential if it was just polished up
the quality of this video is good. keep it up!
Thx
I think the developer did a good job on parts of the mod, but I think they tried to add too much content with too little playtesting.
15:49 this game has so many cool concepts but they use so many it’s so cramped together if they fo used on like one of them for a while aswell as good play testing this game could of been great
Honestly it does look fun and it takes place during portal 2 instead of between portal 1 and 2
looks like am amazing set of concepts with no direction or coherency to put them together in any sort of meaningful way
Wheatley was former aperture director because Chell replaced glados with Wheatley during core transfer of portal 2
Ohhh, makes sense
11:36 he says ”if you can try and get back here to me”
Having played through the entirety of this myself, there is another way out of the disk area, but I only found it by circling the whole place twice- and it's just a linked portal back to the entrance area again. Also literally none of the music loops cleanly.
Oh. Also the music, yea even the main menu music isnt a clean loop lol
the hunt down the freeman of portal games
4:10, you know why it's going out of water. it's gameplay feature. it's for turret button thing
There's some clear effort that went into this. Wtf is wrong with people absolutely shitting on this like it's a 5-minute meme mod? The voice acting is also good, like legit good. Not great but that's to be expected, can't compare someone's mod to a AAA studio that hire voice-talents for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Well, apart from the custom core, it's all AI voices :(
Erm Wheatley is the intelligence dampening core not morality core
Wait... The incinerator isn't the end of the mod? I fell off the lift there, got credits and thought I'd finished it. Maybe I should go back and try it again?
There are multiple endings by the looks of things. Tought there were just 2, than saw you can actuaky escape the trap set up by glados and escape outside as creddits roll. Than i guess the 4th ending?
I think for a 1 person work, this is quite good, even though it looks like it was all mash together and tape in with ducktape, it's still quite a good mod
7:51 thats my computer screen resolution
Best game 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
in summary:
this is the sonic 06 of portal mods
so i may or may not have skipped everything after chapter 2
if you wanna know how, click read more
so, at the ending to chapter 2, where you have to get across the bridge, if instead of going across the bridge, you either use perfected movement to get through the door before it closes, or use a noclip glitch to get behind it, the credits just start rolling and the game ends, i didnt realise i had skipped so much of the game lol
So this mod takes place meanwhile the events of portal 2, wow
Small issue in a crowd of... bigger ones, but I hate that phrase "I forgot to mention".
All too often it's code for "the exposition coming up is vitally important but the writer couldn't be bothered to work it naturally into the dialogue".
Saic is truly a British core
if i made a mod and people called it “the hunt down the freeman of portal mods” i would quite forever
id encourage them to make another but make sure there making quality
id leave the internet and ake a new identity
6:39 very credible scream kkk
definitely the most mod of all time
I hope this mod gets remade in the future or at least fixed up.
7:20 I think he said "Uhh- that can't be!"
15:08 bro can't handle taking the time to find the way out of a maze.
The time before i resorted to that was like 30 minutes of just looping back to the same spot, and i didnt even know how the exit looked
@@JukoYT Ok.
This is a mod made by hammer and bee mod 2.4 with no play testing and a random guy in his room just thinking of random ideas
i saw somebody done one of humanly not possibly solvable sequence
Yea i also saw a video on youtube not too long ago, so far the only recorded case of anyone doing it legit lol
it's possible to do it, i managed to solve it myself
It's actually funny how much quality stuff i didn't even notice hihi
14:24 yeah that backrooms area took me a while lol
4:34
this looks like lenords appartment
If this mod had just been put on moddb, it probably wouldn't have been hated as much (if that makes sense)
14:02 this is honestly a really funny joke
first of all very very good video second how long did it take to play through and how long did it take to edit the whole video because the subtitle wow
Thx. I finished it in like 5h over the course of two days, editing took about a week ish
wow you are a relatively small channel but that effort is S++ rank worth @@JukoYT
