That audio screeching reminds me of what it sounded like playing on TF2 Valve servers with TONS of audio mods installed, in the time after they disabled mod use on them I had so many musical gun, funny voice and other fun alternate sounds that were all replaced by a cacophony of ear-piercing screaming

Apparently an entire game of HL2 Deathmatch can be played almost completely in RAM. God I love old games. You can't do this shit with modern 800 GB file sizes anymore

This reminds me of when my uncle would take his PS2 games back home every weekend. He would leave a game on & running for us (like Ratchet and Clank). The game level is still playable since it's loaded onto the RAM but once we try and load another level, that's it.

Interestingly, the Half-life 2 commentary introduced with the 20th anniversary update sheds light on the sound and subtitle glitches. In the Source Engine, because it was designed at a time where there were enough memory constraints to keep from holding all the subtitle and sound data needed, had to rely on an asynchronous caching system to stream in assets to the game, loading those assets from disk and discarding parts already used just as quickly. What the game does, at least for sound, is load the first 150 milliseconds into memory at map load, then wait for the sound to actually get cued up to play and stream it from disk. Not sure how to account for why subtitles are grabbing elements from much later in the game, though. But the assets glitching so hard is probably part of how the system works. My guess is when you yank the USB, Windows doesn't properly clean up file handles or inform the Source engine that the file handles it has are basically garbage and I guess it's just streaming from whatever part of memory the files used to be in. This actually could be the start of some kinda scary security holes, come to think of it, if Source can just stream arbitrary data from stale file handles like that. Portal 2 likely just crashed most times because it came out in a time where even a low-end computer is likely to be able to cache all of a map's assets without too much issue, and so relies less on the streaming and just opens and plays out a file on cue, so as soon as Windows nopes at the file open requests, the engine just crashes. Though the fact it doesn't just fire off a "file not found" event and just keep things going makes me think it still created file handles to files it wants but doesn't precache much. Also, this is just on Windows. I'd be curious what happens on macOS and Linux. This is an EDUCATED GUESS, mind you. I think only Valve's software engineers could actually explain this.

Half life 2 received a major update where the limit gas changed. I hope by mounting portal game files to the new updated hl2 engine will make this possible again
