    Thanks !
    EDIT: The MAG bearing is a large double row KOYO bearing... I thought they were all made in Japan, but apparently they have factories in Japan, UK, Europe, China and India.
    They are SKF bearings, I believe made in Sweden. Not sure if these engines have bearings issues, but I have noticed that they don't have any oil holes like most two cycle engines do. Normally the transfer ports will have a dimple, that causes oil to pool, and a hole that leads down to the bearings / seals.
    The bearings in this engine failed due to water being inside the engine instead of outside of the hull 😂 but I may attempt to drill some oil passages. I am quite nervous about doing that tho, As I'm not sure how strong these cases are.

      Thanks for the comment Steve. If it's not obvious, I don't know much about them. I have been on their site and see that the now make an 1162 fuel injected engine that looks like it is based on this platform. Did they made a few different versions of the 997 ? What gives this away as being a first edition ?

I just looked around and it seems like they are going for an insane amount of money ($400+)... however, it looks like RHAAS sells them for $235 US

    Maybe the wide bore spacing could also be linked to that case having been a rotary induction case at one point earlier in its design. The longer the crank the more prone to torsional twist…

    1 min in. No all the manifold holes will need a helicoil or keysert. The head.... Yeah I thought about making a billet one. Intake manifold good..... except that top adapter Jacob made. Clearance for the reeds.... They found out it didn't fit just like the pipe elbow that got notched and welded after casting. I think one of the front exhaust bolts has a piece of broken bolt deep in the bottom. No pry tabs.... You can put some in. I kind of had similar thoughts about this thing when I first got it. It wasn't slow when it ran right. A stock 701 had way more bottom end snap(the one you rode in jasons ski wasn't right) . Mid range power seemed good and then it only topped out at about 50. I was more impressed with how the DASA ran. I'm assuming you will make a giant carbon fiber dry pipe for it that will make it RIP. I bet a big pump like a 155 would work better with it. I hope the Krash is worth it.
    I was looking at big boring yamaha stuff. I was seeing that people use cr500 and 951 pistons with 701s. Apparently you can get needle bearings that let the 21mm wrist pins work with stock rods that use 20mm pins.

      @JoelArseneaultYouTube  Рік тому

      I'm actually rewatching your SuperKrash build videos ... I love it. It was actually shiny back then, haha. I'm sad that it ended up not working awesome for you.
      Yup... you could totally make a better head 😀 might be time consuming tho. The intake adapter seems fine to me, haha !! I didn't see anything wrong with it. I thought that was probably a clearance issue with the reeds, but the reeds that are in it don't seem like they would have fitment issues without the grinding... I guess I need to actually measure instead of just guessing :)
      A surprise bolt hiding in one of the exhaust holes, haha... Nice. I guess I can mill in some pry tabs eh... I probably wouldn't have thought of that. Sounds like a good working 701 must be pretty impressive ! I would like to make a carbon pipe that was much less of a compromise... but only time will tell. I think you are right about the big pump. I think that a small pump won't take advantage of the torque this engine makes. This is going to be a really fun project for me, so even IF it kinda sucks (and I don't think it will) it will totally be worth the effort.
      That's interesting that poeple are using those pistons in the 701... I had wondered if a bearings was available that would work... Seems like the needles would have to be very small, but I guess if they use more of them it could still be as durable. MAN... that would be insane !! That would be an 1820 with a 68mm stroke...

      @@JoelArseneaultUA-cam I bet you take a way more nuanced approach to this but I'm thinking you copy a skidoo 850 pipe and 160hp 997. But man that pipe looks BIG! I'm curious what you think about the DASA Compared to it. I'm thinking it would have been way more money to get it going. If you got say a superjet or a waveblaster it would bolt in and you get a 144 pump. I just put a 155 in my blaster. What's an 8 hour drive anyway. Its only a 16 hour trip.

    • @JoelArseneaultYouTube
      @JoelArseneaultYouTube  Рік тому

      @@Jacobskibros I think copying an 850 pipe would be a good idea with maybe a few changes. I'd like to keep the RPM down a little and focus on low to mid range power. That is a good starting point but they don't make any power down low.
      I haven't had a real close look at the DASA yet but I do remember thinking that it's one HUGE billet part ! It needs a few more bits than the Krash and that's kinda why I decided on working on the Krash first. I messaged that guy about the waveblaster, so that could be a thing... The time to travel is one thing and the $400 in fuel ...

      @@JoelArseneaultUA-cam hmmmm. Wondering if the wider spread is an advantage for strength or stability. And now my brain is working.... Will a bigger bearing cause more drag than a smaller one?

    • @JoelArseneaultYouTube
      @JoelArseneaultYouTube  Рік тому

      @@chuckb.3324 More spread is pretty much advantageous to the transfer ports only, and in every other way it is a drawback... Except that they could have used larger bearings because of the space. The distance between the pistons means that the balancing of the crank will be much more difficult.
      A twin has some natural balancing as you have one piston reaching the top as you have one reaching the bottom, so these forces cancel each other out... The issue is that you have a rocking force from the center of the crank as one piston is pulling up and one is pulling down. The longer the crank is, the more leverage there is, and so you have more imbalance. This is why 4 cylinders are so smooth. Even tho they are long, generally, two of the outer pistons reach top at the same time canceling out the rocking force while the two center pistons reach bottom, cancelling out the upward force... They are much easier to balance.
      A larger bearing will cause slightly more drag under low loads, but as the loads increase, the more surface area becomes advantageous. A small bearing, or fewer bearings, will have less drag under low forces, but as the forces increase, the rate that the resistance ramps up increases more.... I hope that makes sense. Either way you do it is a compromise, but with bigger / more bearings you get the added bonus of more durability / longer life.

      Thanks for your comment. This is not the first story I've heard like this, for sure, and garbage customer support makes everything a million times worse. That being said, I worked for Yamaha and Polaris in the 90s - early 00s and we had lots of polaris snowmobile engines that got cut in half or completely destroyed in 30 minutes to an hour of use... Yamaha wasn't quite as bad, but we had plenty of V-max 500, 600 and V-max 4 engines that got destroyed with very little use.
      Yamaha is known for their quality and durability, yet when you work for them you see lots of horror stories, and every one of those stories has a customer who had their day ruined after spending a butt load of money. It's not hard for me to believe that a small manufacturer building performance two cycle engines would have issues, however, customer support is extremely important and without that a bad day becomes a horrible experience.
