  • The legendary Roy Clark plays "Under The Double Eagle" on guitar, filmed live on stage at the Roy Clark Celebrity Theatre in Branson, Missouri (US). Check out the key and chord changes during this piece, making it an unusual instrumental *trio*.
~Posted in tribute to Mr. Clark who passed away on 15 Nov. 2018.
"Under the Double Eagle" (German: Unter dem Doppeladler), Op. 159, is an 1893 march composed by J.F. Wagner, an Austrian military music composer. The title is a reference to the double eagle in the coat of arms of Austria-Hungary. It has been recorded by country music guitar and banjo players, several identified with the bluegrass style.
    Enjoy! Thanks for watching!

I'm more into rock guitarists but Roy Clark was one of the most most badass players of all time. If it had strings on it he could make it sing, period.

There's this story in my dad's family about this time he took them to this super-fancy restaurant in Philadelphia (my dad was doing his residency there for medical school-he and his whole family were from small-town Alabama, really nice people but definitely good country folk, emphasis on the country). They had this string quartet performing at the restaurant, doing the kind of high-end classical you'd expect-Vivaldi, Schubert, Brahms, that kind of thing-and apparently my grandfather approached them and asked them if they could play Under the Double Eagle. The first violinist said, "Sir, you must be a comedian." To which my grandfather replied, completely straight-faced: "Comedian? What country is that? I'm American!"
This sounds like a stupid joke, but apparently it's 100% unequivocally true-my dad, uncle, aunt, and grandmother all attest to it. Anyway, it's turned into this running gag where whenever any of us in my family pick up an instrument (we're all musically inclined-I play violin, piano and guitar) my dad starts demanding that we play Under the Double Eagle. So whenever I think about this song I sort of have to crack a smile. One of these days I might even try to actually learn it; it's a catchy tune (albeit obviously very challenging, as shown by Clark's incredible performance here) and I think it would crack my dad up.

Was there any stringed instrument he couldn't play?

After much thought, searching my memory, I couldn't think of any he didn't play... and each at an elite level. Just saw a critique video in which the host recalled Eddie Van Halen asking Eric Clapton to call Glenn Campbell if he could get Roy Clark to give him lessons. Some pretty heady stuff there!

Lol, what got me was the sheer humility of each renowned guitarist acknowledging Roy Clark's superiority. We are indeed blessed!

He once said that he could play anything with strings except for a pair of shoes :)

Besides his good voice, I think he could about pickup about any instrument and play it proficiently and masterfully. Least when I saw him play trumpet, trombone, banjo, mandolin, and I think some wild instruments if I remember right.
