The type you have are called Fonts. They are used in printing presses. For printing stationary, business cards, tickets for raffles etc. Yes it was and old style printing presses before rotogrevier and before computers. I used that type of press I even had a hand press years ago then I got into flexopress which is rotogrevier, which started out with rubber plates. They now make and use syrell plates, I use the lead type still in my leather craft.
I'm looking at getting an embossing machine and I like the Kingsley. I happen to be a machinist and can make those holders. LMK if you're still in need of some, if I end up making some I can make some extras.
I just so happen to own a ton of Kingsley stuff, I bought about 25 years ago from the widow of a Kingsley sales rep for my custom invitation home business. So, I have bits and pieces of Kingsley stuff that most people don't and most of it looks brand new or barely used. I have two machines that I am going to package individually and each of the two packages will include all the parts and accessories that I have that a person would need to do most everything with a Kingsley machine. This way you would not have to worry about never being able to find Kingsley pieces that you might need to replace or need for a certain function in the future. Each package will also have extra, non- Kingsley items you would need for the practical use of the machine, like a light, ruler and small tool kit. However the packages will not contain type. I do have lots of type, but I felt the choice of a font was too personal. I have not worked out all the details yet, I plan to list the first machine package on ebay by the end of the month 10/31/24. But just to give you an idea of price, the two packages should be around, $1,800 to $ 2,300. If you should happen to be interested, email me debbelpalm@comcast.net and I will be happy to send photos and a parts list. But being a machinist you might not need everything I have included in each package. I would love to know what you are planning to use a Kingsley for, I believe you work leather by your account name?
I truly do not intend to be rude, but there is a lot about this machine that you don't seem to know. So you realize you are missing parts that hold the foil and advances the foil every time you make an impression. You are not supposed to cut off a piece of foil and stick it under the hot die with your fingers. Also, there are different types of boards (rubber, plastic & cardboard etc) available to put under whatever material you are stamping to increase the quality of the impression. The boards also protect the type from being damaged from hitting the base plate. If you do not get a clean & crisp impression, regardless of the type size, it is because you are not doing it correctly. The main cause of such issues is the temperature. You should start at 250 degrees and adjust from there. You can use a rubber cement pickup to clean up impressions of excess foil. Here is the big surprise, you obviously do not have the part that was made for the machine that is meant to hold down leather goods. Ever wondered what that chrome piece screwed on the side of the machine, just opposite the handle, is for? Well that is where you clamp the part for holding leather goods. For your reference it is called a leather goods clamp. I hope this will help you enjoy your Kingsley more and good luck with your leather craft business. One last thing. I noticed you seem to like the gold foil. You can use 24kt gold leaf to stamp on leather as well. Kingsley did make some, but I do not know it you can use the gold leaf you can buy at craft stores. But I don't see why it would not work.
Hi Deborah, thank you for your comment. I actually had the roll holder that advances the foil on the machine originally, and removed it because it actually was not at all suitable to my needs. When using it for leather, I’m not batching out foil stamps (like on post cards or something) so I have no need to do more than one in a row. I would much rather remove the holder and have the extra visibility under the stamp to ensure I am lined up correctly. The boards aren’t needed for leather stamping and I need it to be firm under the leather and the metal baseplate works just fine. I have seen the leather clamp and that would be something I would like to experiment with in the future
In 2011-2012 I worked at a downtown retail store in a dying town that used one of these exact machines for various purposes; the roll holder thing had been removed long ago cause we never knew if the customer wanted silver or gold foil, so we also just cut a piece of the foil. The craziest thing is, the owner let high school workers use the machine. Thankfully no one got hurt, but some things got messed up. I do think the commenter is onto something with the boards though, I do recall us using various ones for different things. I guess it would depend on the kind of leather you are embossing. The owner of the store sold it about a year or so after I left. I asked the next owner about this machine and she had no idea what I was talking about. I’m thinking the owner I worked under either sold the machine separately or took it home. I’ve been meaning to ask her, as I’m now looking to acquire one of these machines myself.

I use superglue to temporarily stick a die onto my base. I also cut pieces of foil to manually place under the press. Most of us aren’t not running a kluge for hundreds of thousands of impressions. 😂 Auto feeding foil isn’t always necessary
My dad owned this machine and used it to stamp his photography logo onto leather bound photo albums.
I make my own books with it and it embosses entire titles into leather perfectly.

Also, Leather Stamp Maker
Makes their own Kingsley adapter to use with their custom stamps

Do you do logo work? I really love yours and would like to change mine.
Do you think stamping on cardstock would work?
Do you have a recommendation for a font that would match what you typically see as Holy Bible on the front of a Bible?

I'm not sure where one is supposed to get this machine... Any decent ones are $1000+. I'd rather get a brand new Metallic Elephant.
They’re on eBay but who knows what kind of state they’re in… these are old machines from around the WWII era.
