Strictly Dumpling If you're ever in Taiwan I'll tell you where to eat the very best street food in northern Taipei! Thanks for your videos, they are great!
She clam she is from Taiwan... and she suggest Shilin Night Market - 士林夜市 as the choice of night market?! That place is for tourist ONLY, everything is over priced and shady merchant prey on customers has become a major issue... It is not really a bad place, but it was just way too annoy to be a place that you can relax... And I heard that now the new building of this market have installed a control system to keep the total number in the market stay under 1400 people... So you might not even get a chance to get in there after all! My suggestion is, if you want to go to a night market in Taipei, go to Gongguan - 公館, Raohe street night market - 饒河街夜市, Tunghoa street night market - 通化街夜市 or Teacher's University night market - 師大夜市. Base on my experience living in Taipei, those place are much more accessible, and even more fun.
8:18: I empathize with the whole not liking fatty meats as a child, but as of 2 years ago.... I can not get enough of them if they are prepared correctly!!!! It is amazing to savor the fat that melts in your mouth with aged meats or just smoked meats in general.
best rationale for stinky tofu is like cheese. Some people like bleu cheese, some people don't. If you don't, nothing can persuade you on why you don't like it.
I'm a food lover and I am a fan of you, Mike. I like watching your videos. Keep up your good work. One of my dream is to travel and eat lots of good food.
I love the oyster pancake so much! When I went to Taiwan, there were so many food stands selling it everywhere I went! My family makes the Teochew version, which is less gooey and there is no sauce. It's simply an oyster omelette with green onion.
Stinky tofu is great if it cooked the right way. Not too stinky. I love it fried or boiled. The stinkiness adds a flavor similar to boiled chitterlings. The strong smell in Taiwan is similar to hot garbage.
Jessie reminds me of a girl that I met 20 years back when I was doing my army service in Taiwan, and for RnR we were in Taipei for one night. Spoke to her and her friends and they brought my army mates and I for a tour in Shilin. She wrote me once, but I never wrote back because I was too shy.
I just found your channel and I really like your videos! Great sense of humor and the cooking videos are super simple. I hope you keep making videos! :) Also, stinky tofu does smell like poo. yuck.
I know this is a necropost, but I wanted to suggest that, rather than being fat, what you're seeing as "fatty" meat is probably connective tissue, collagen. Braising -- cooking for a long time with a little moisture -- converts collagen to gelatin if you cook it long enough. That's the lip-smacking, mouth-coating stuff in really well made pot roast, and what makes ribs, short ribs in particular, so succulent. But some people get the impression that because it's whitish or maybe light yellow, that it's just fat. So don't think you're eating so much fat. Some of it is just natural collagen converted to gelatin from the braising.
Gu-Shine (故鄉) is my personal favorite Taiwanese restaurant in Flushing. If I could, I'd eat there everyday lol. Regarding stinky tofu, some Taiwanese restaurants serve it sichuan style where they stew it in a spicy mala broth. If you can't stomach the fried version, I recommend that instead. You can get a similar version (although they have it sauteed), in the restaurant mentioned above :)
I knew I should have searched in your channel before hitting up a new restaurant. I went by reviews on a taiwanese place in NJ and they mentioned the intestines but we didn't order it and planned to try it next time. Had the oyster omelet/pancake and loved it.
I'm Taiwanese and got to stay in Taiwan for two months last summer :) The heat isn't that bad but its really humid and there are lots of mosquitoes. I might go back next year :)
This is such a cool video! Feels like I'm sitting in the restaurant with them haha cool experience, I really want visit Taiwan and try the intestine noodle.
From what I understand the dishes that are served here in the US might not be strictly authentic be it Asian, Italian, whatever but the biggest reason is because of whats availible. Something that is common there has to be imported here and that drives the cost up so its just not made or made well. It has to do with the cost and what people will pay? Great video though. Julia
Mmmm, intestines are the best, in my tribe we boil the large ones or the small but the small I cut into small lengths then season them in a bowl then pour flour over them & mix well to coat then roastthem off in a single layer in the oven, soooo good! I love authentic Chinese food!
It is strange that so many people praise the prettiness of the girl under this FOOD channel... I mean, I'm an authentic Chinese man but I think she is just common in my point of view.
Pig's large intestine + hot sauce? You've basically got Taiwanese chitlins right there, son. Also, I find it ironic that Mike won't touch the stinky tofu which he says smells like poo, but he doesn't mind the stink of the organ that actual poo goes through?! P.S. your friend's pretty easy on the eyes, but that's to be expected of a Tai-mei.
There's a video where he eats some in China that aren't cleaned properly and gags. I don't get why you would want to eat them cleaned or not. I just couldn't do it
I think the show you watched was called 转角遇到爱 but I'm not sure. Taiwanese shows seem all the same to me but I love them anyway :) I'm from Singapore but have been to Taiwan three times and haven't had enough. Yup it's that good!
I think 3 cup chicken is 1 cup of soya sauce one cup of sesame oil and one cup of Taiwanese rice wine and you need to fry ginger garlic and hot peper to add flavor to the oil befoe frying chicken with it then you fry the chicken and add rice wine then you add some sugar and soya souce you cock it until the soup start drying up and get all sticky due to the sugar( you can add soem oinion to enchance the flavor at this stage) then you add some sessme oil and fry it with Thai basil then it is done do put it in the plate before it is burned
I didn't like chodofu at first but by the time I left Taiwan I was eating it at least once a week. As much as any Taiwan dish I miss this one. Hard to explain!
this may be pedantic, but what makes a dish taiwanese? stinky tofu and 3 cup chicken are all well-known in china. are the taiwanese versions uniquely different, or they become taiwanese by popular adoption? i mean curry is popular in england, but it is still indian food. curry is also popular in japan, and it is quite different so people talk about japanese curry to differentiate.
Like your videos in general. Love to eat the food you're eating...however... Oyster pancakes isn't really "Taiwanese." It's a southern Chinese dish you can find in Chaozhou (Teochew) or Xiamen (pronounced exactly the same way). You can also find it in Singapore. Vietnamese has something very similar too. Stinky tofu isn't Taiwanese either. You have Zhejiang and Hunan people eating them.
love this video. been curious about Taiwanese food.(Will try soon, and I hope it taste like flavor) ;) i love Jessie, she is so knowledgeable. i love you too Mike.
I hate the mosquitoes too!! Haha! But omg! I love stinky tofu too! I went to Taiwan about 5 years ago and since stinky tofu is a famous dish for its name, my host family were afraid I was going to hate but I loved it! Love oyster omelette too! I am dying to go back and eat all the delicious food, ride the MRT and wonder through the night markets. (:
Mike, you are awesome, you also watch Taiwanese dramas hahaha....corner of love was also where I saw oyster pancakes the first time. When I was in Taiwan I had to go to find the one who taught the actor in that drama how to make that dish and try the Ulster pancake.
I read somewhere that regular tofu is not as healthy as stinky (fermented) tofu. For some reason the aging of the tofu makes it healthier -- I only checked that out because I worried that I was eating too much tofu and wasn't sure if it was healthy or not. Still, while I was able to eat a piece when my friend ordered it, it was probably because I have a bad nose. Still, I only ate one piece so don't feel bad Mike.
OMG My childhood foods. >_< I'm drooling.I'm going to make some oyster omelet right now! My favorite foods are: 豬血糕 and 大腸包小腸. If you get the chance you should try them out! They go best with GHOST PEPPERS. :9
I am curious if that tofu experience is similar to the blue cheese where smell is quite strong but the flavour is quite nice. As for the oyster omelette, it reminded me of some great oyster omelettes that I had in Penang, Malaysia.
Not a bad video but you should refrain from making negative comments about food you don't like. If you don't like something, just say it's not for me and move on. Food is part of the culture a particular group of people share, and making negative comments can be offensive to those people.
I really really fell in love with Jessica, ... i don't know, there's something about her, that really tickles my fancy !! Great Food video, as usual, Thanks for your amazing work Mike !! Regards from Spain !

It's almost like msg but with an after-funk.
Wow!! Jessie was like one of your first guests, if not the first! Love that she's still on your show. You've guys come full circle!
三杯雞 three cup chicken is actually made with one cup of dark sesame oil, one cup of rice wine and one cup of soy sauce.
French girl living in Taiwan here! I watched this video while eating a 蔥抓餅, it was perfect! Cheers from Taiwan ;)

roundingcorners i like bleu cheese. And I eat Durian. So am I gonna have a problem with stinky tofu?
Treat it like why Gordon can't take pineapple on pizza and mike doesn't like tofu that is sticky.
@@ChurroWaffles Nope!
I'm a food lover and I am a fan of you, Mike. I like watching your videos. Keep up your good work. One of my dream is to travel and eat lots of good food.

Go Taiwan first.

Stinky tofu is great if it cooked the right way. Not too stinky. I love it fried or boiled. The stinkiness adds a flavor similar to boiled chitterlings. The strong smell in Taiwan is similar to hot garbage.

+Strictly Dumpling YOU HAVE TO GO TO TAIWAN, I'm Taiwanese, just many ppl consider me Chinese, but Taiwan is awesome
+bebechiang You know, stinky tofu isn't that bad once you get used to the smell and it tastes great.
As i'm French and used to very stinky cheese, i think i could handle stinky tofu :)))
You're right. It really does smell like a stinky cheese. I like it.
Stinky cheese smells like channel N°5 compared to real rotten like stinky tofu

I live in Taiwan, I've been here 4 years, and though I love this country, I'm with you Mike, I can't stand the smell of 臭豆腐 :/
***** yea...
Jessie is so cute
In New Zealand we have a dish called 'rotten corn' it smells rank but tastes kind of like creamed corn with a porridge texture, the smell though!
flyingvigil
You can definitely get it in chch rotten corn that is at that weekend market in the cbd or wherever if it has moved!
it adds FLAVOR!
I like Jessie! Wish you and her would meet up again. She looks so chill and a foodie
I'm half Taiwanese and Chinese too!
And Taiwan is pretty cool!😂
I didn't like chodofu at first but by the time I left Taiwan I was eating it at least once a week. As much as any Taiwan dish I miss this one. Hard to explain!
It's an acquired taste. In order to enjoy it you have to be accustomed to the smell, but if you're not, then you won't like it.
One order of stinky toes to go 😂
This video is like being an awkward third wheel interrupting a very patient couple's date.
she has a New Jersey accent, you two are adorable together, thats love
Corner with love!! Haha the first time I saw that too. Looks awesome!
We ❤️ Jessie!
Mike & Jessie, Great Channel, very informative and entertaining. I subscribed today. Thanks. :-)

Jackie Chan doing food review😁
Awwww Taiwanese food!! We have a really nice one in Chinatown in London. Dunno how authentic it is though...
The Drama is Corner with Love!! Don't know the Chinese name. Not my favorite but I like Barbie.
Right on Jessie that Tofu is the Best
I'm so happy I found your station! So interesting and informative! Plus you are too cute and funny so that works😉
love this video. been curious about Taiwanese food.(Will try soon, and I hope it taste like flavor) ;) i love Jessie, she is so knowledgeable. i love you too Mike.
Oyster omelets: you could easily get Americans into that calling it morning delight. Eggs for breakfast filled with oysters (a great aphrodisiac)
Mike: I can smell a lot of tea.
Me: Hence the name: tea braised ribs
Her : that stink adds that actual flavour
Mickey: of what? Poo?
I hate the mosquitoes too!! Haha! But omg! I love stinky tofu too! Fermented foods are good for you (tofu, kimchi..etc) because it contains healthy bacteria that promotes colon health, kind like yogurt
The drama is 转角遇到爱
It suddenly dawned on me that you look like Jackie chan ... Duang
I used to love stinky tofu when I lived in Taiwan but I no longer like it once I moved to USA for around 29 years! I still like oyster pancake!
Stinky tofu is just a dare that's gone too far.
Mike you be like "Can you define what smells good"? Lol
Never had stinky tofu, but I imagine it's like feta or blue cheese, in terms of learning to love it.
OMG My childhood foods. >_< I'm drooling.I'm going to make some oyster omelet right now! My favorite foods are: 豬血糕 and 大腸包小腸. If you get the chance you should try them out! They go best with GHOST PEPPERS. :9

apparently not
Fermented tofu (stinky tofu) has different texture from fried tofu. It's more firm and chewy.
Somebody should send 'm some surströmming, LMAO.
"You guys don't shower?" Lol
this girl all about the stank
That drama is Corner with Love i believe LOL
The Taiwanese girls is sooo cute!
I would describe the smell as a fermented smell. That's what gives the tofu the taste actually.
Mike, you rock! Cool video by the way ^_^
Helives009 thanks :-)
I really really fell in love with Jessica, ... i don't know, there's something about her, that really tickles my fancy !! Great Food video, as usual, Thanks for your amazing work Mike !! Regards from Spain !
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣loved the reaction to the STANKY tofu
Yes, stinky tofu is definitely having distinct flavors.
Have you ever been to Portland, Oregon? Have you been to any authentic Chinese or Taiwanese restaurants here? Most I've been too are decent but not that authentic. I've been to one that was pretty good. I had jellyfish there. Portland has a lot of restaurants and the good ones can be hard to find.
Which places serve good TW food in PDX?
andrewcooks1 You should try Hunan Pearl in Lake Oswego, I don't know how authentic it is but their food is amazing, especially their chicken in garlic sauce 😍
I've always liked the smell of stinky tofu, i mean it's just a funky smell not necessarily stinky, like an egg gone bad now that's stinky, but stinky tofu is just funky like cheese, fish sauce etc. The way i think about it is the smell is right on the line between umami and stink. It's almost like msg but with an after-funk.
