I love it when you name the dishes in Chinese. 🌷This is like getting a free Chinese lesson.❤ Thanks for sharing info about Halal food which is hard to find any where.
Mike, i really don't understand spoken english very good, but your sincere face expressions when you tasting the food are beyond words! i think you can transmit the taste and flavor through the laptop screen and thousand of kilometers:))) that is why your videos are amazing))) thank you and good luck!
The whole cilantro tasting like soap thing is partly a genetic and partly a cultural phenomenon. Some people have a gene that makes them more sensitive to aldehydes. Aldehydes are the fat molecules that cilantro and soaps share, thus some people taste the aldehyde and associates it with soap. But it's also a cultural thing because there are many cultures that use lots and lots of cilantro in their comfort food so people associate it with warm fuzzies instead of soap. :D I'm so jealous of the people who will get to eat with you! Your videos makes me so hungry xD
you just made my day Mike! I'm a Filipina teaching English here in Changchun, Jilin. and everyone of those dishes that you sampled are an absolute favorite of mine. the best part of it is I can eat them anytime I want to, anywhere here in Jilin. in fact, you just made me crave for that heavenly lamb chop =) Love your channel!
Hi Mike: the reason why cilantro taste like soap to some people is because it it a genetic issue People who say that cilantro taste like soap is missing a certain gene take messes with the olfactory receptors. Which Means their smell receptor is throw off. Just some FYI . But Love your channel .
Tonjia Cooper That me it tastes like some one hasn't washed or rinsed the washing up liquid off the plate, knife, fork or spoon, it's not very nice at all. It was a guy at my Indian takeaway who told me what was making me taste sope in the Indian food, then I looked it up on Google and there it was I'm one of that smallish group that says it tastes like sope.
Im learning more and more through you that Chinese cuisine is very similar to korean food. I watched about three food blog of yours including this one that I've eaten growing up. The sweet stringy yam looked so funky and cool but then I realized my mom made this a few times before just not stringy. The tomato with sugar, my mom used to make that for us when we were kids and it was actually my mom's pregnancy cravings. The Chinese version potato french fries my mom made that as 'ban chan' minus the vinegar, and what korean doesn't know ja Jang myun. We even have that in instant ramen called chapaghetti. Even how Koreans say cheers in korean 'gum beh' we probably got that from the Chinese yea?
If you really want to be technical, some of the earliest "Asian" customs were probably developed by the "Chinese". I say probably considering what some believe in, as the idea of Pangaea (and migration by our ancestors) is something I believe in. From what I know, the people we know as the "Chinese" are some of the oldest Asians. Some of these people migrated (whether due to war or just settling after being nomadic) to make new civilisations and customs were reformed with the old ones in mind. These civilisations became what may be Korea and Japan and other modern Asian countries today. There are plenty of similarities between the Chinese culture and other Asian cultures, like Korea. Their written languages, their traditional clothing, and yes, even their foods are very similar. Time and convenience and different cultural influences definitely shaped the newer Asian civilisations, for sure, but I'm sure it started somewhere amongst the "Chinese" ancestors. Just my take on it, though.
Nice change up in the food. Looks great. Prince street seems to be popular and not as nuts as Main St. Flushing. I love the BBQ cart on Kisenna Blvd right above Mains St. Super good. They put a great glaze on their meats.. And they have beef tendon, which the Manhattan and Sunset Park doesn't have. So good.
Mike, I love your videos. You do a really good job with this. You make this food look amazing! I love Chinese cuisine. The food you eat makes me want to get on a plane to NYC right now. I am from the Deep South- Baton Rouge , LA. I don't think we have food like this here. But, I would love for you to send a list of some of what u r eating. In both languagesplease. I want to know what to order when I am out. Even though I don't think we have some of the same foods. We have several Chinese restaurants, some Thai, and Vietnamese. Generally I love it all! I want to do your tomato and rice dish in the rice cooker. What kind of rice do you use? It looks sticker than what I use. It also seems like you use less water in your cooker too. That looked so good! We do have a few Asian markets. I apologize if that is offensive. I love this cuisine. We don't have a big population of Chinese folks here. Maybe in bigger cities I could get some of what you are filming about. Keep them coming, hungry!!
Food looks sounds DELICIOUS. ALWAYS wanna jump in the screen and join in. Ingredients in the cold appetizer reminds me of a Vietnamese sublike cold sandwich. Grew up on healthy foods like tofu in the 70s longbefore US people knew it exist- i love Chinese food -really excited to try the many options of authentic Asian foods out there-first HOT POT!!Hilarious how the girl in red behind you wants to hide after a while in front of the camera:) aaawkward- been there done that myself. Anyways Good luck on more food adventures Mike your a real "FOODMONGER":)
Yess, come to SF! Some good restaurants here are R&G Lounge (Cantonese food in SF Chinatown), Hakkasan (I've never tried it, but apparently it's pretty good dim sum in downtown SF), and also Dong Bei Shui Jiao (which is a local restaurant in the Sunset District with really good dishes like dumplings and beef rolls and noodle dishes).
Some people say cilantro tastes like soap because there is actually a gene that will cause the cilantro to taste like soap to them. I am glad that isn't the case for me. (:
I was very fortunate to grow up in San Diego and be surrounded by great Mexican food with lots of cilantro. (: Tacos stuffed with tongue, onion and cilantro is sooo good.
A friend of mine who's lived in SFO for years recommends using Yelp. Also Duke says: If he likes dim sum and don't mind the wait, Hong Kong lounge is excellent.
Mike that sweet potato deserts you eat, we have it here in the Philippines it’s called kamoteQ it’s usually served on a stick in Biger slices or the other version kamote fries cut like a French fries and we eat it piping hot, it is usually sells in the street of Manila as street food
Strictly Dumpling Hey Mike, if I ever make it to New York City, I'll hit you up. I'd like to try that Muslim Lamb chop. Also, gotta admit, I'm really liking this channel as it's making me hungry. Lol. (What's funny is that I'm already eating as I write this.)
Cilantro tastes like soap. It does to me and Chef Greg Easter from the UA-cam channel Cooking in Russia explains it. It is ones genetics that determine if Cilantro tastes like soap. I find it isn't like that, but I have to use a small amount and the crazy thing about it all is that I love coriander. One of the things I definitely want to try is shadow beni or more widely know as culantro. they say it is stronger than cilantro, but I have a feeling that I would love it as it doesn't have that soap taste.
I just can't do without watching your videos like twice to thrice daily, I'm so addicted to you Mike. I wish you can just reply me for once I swear it will make my day. but all the same if wishes were horses I would ride....😢; nothing I would have wished for more than to eat with you someday, someplace😋😍.

I like 拔丝芋头because I love the consistency and taste of taro. But sweet potato is good too. In fact BaSi is good with almost any root vegetable I guess.
Shuyan Chi Yes I learned that in the north east. south people don't understand that slang. so anytime I meet people from dong bei, I always use it haha.

1/3 way through the video, he says "I'm so hungry". He's always hungry, and weighs about 125 lbs. Amazing. He could devour a horse and not gain a single pound.

I love how you invited random people to try the dessert. Food brings people together it's so awesome!
I find it amazing how you can vlog alone in a restaurant full of people.
leighiauy hehe just enter "no shame" mode
The difference in your newer videos and these older ones are awesome! You've grown and evolved as a vlogger! Love watching you!

It tastes like soap to me, which makes me kinda sad because I won't know what it really tastes like! I still eat it though..

She doesn't speak English and her son has never told me exactly where his mom was from other than China .
You can find authentic places in Canada for sure. Vancouver has a ton, Calgary and Toronto too.
Hi Mike, Is there any restaurant in Washington DC Metropolitan area that you can suggest ?
Not in New York but it'd be cool to have you as a Chinese food guide lol
1/3 way through the video, he says "I'm so hungry". He's always hungry, and weighs about 125 lbs. Amazing. He could devour a horse and not gain a single pound.
