In battle anime, "training arcs" are a fun series of stories about developing power and learning new special moves. So, I allow "Training" as an option during Downtime. Now I try to not let this be about raw XP, but instead a way for Martial Classes to get homebrew content.
For example, a Fighter could take homebrewed maneuvers based on their theming and powers from D&D 4E. If this is super strong, maybe it can only be used once per encounter or required using multiple attacks for this single maneuver.
These special maneuvers allowed every fighter to feel unique in concept and sometimes even sped up gameplay since fewer attack rolls were made.
This made Martial Classes feel more epic and had fun stories behind them when seeking masters and completing trials alone.
This added new utility powers to martial classes.
This added spicier power to martial classes to even things out with the extreme exponential growth of casters.
One can argue they don't like adding new features or permanents during Downtime, but mechanically and thematically it's not really that different from getting a magic item, it just makes it so the power comes from the character and not their stuff.
Sorry for the long comment! Amazing video!

I already had the Trainer NPCs prepared specifically for something like this, but I wasn't cognizant about "training arcs." Thank you very much for supplying me with a focus!
It should be pretty easy. The players supply rich thematic material and they're *all* anime protagonists without meaning to be. I've got a DEX Barbarian (Tiger) who is the perfect snow elf and survivalist economist, a Psi Warrior perfect orc unlocking lucid dream powers thanks to her mentor (another player's old PC), a Ranger/Celestial Warlock who is the perfect human being and who will probably *train others,* and a Psi Warrior/Artificer *badass* with a split-personality that makes her combat form seriously edgy, while her Artificer form is entirely focused on learning new skills and inventing great things.

    Man Treantmonk was right, subscribed.
One of my players in my Eberron campaign has a Mark of Death and both the character and the player (new to D&D) think it's an aberrant dragonmark and are deathly afraid of anyone finding out about it. Lots of downtime is devoted to reading about Dragonmarks and Eberron's Cosmology and some homebrewed exercises using the mark. Can't wait until they discover there's a 13th dragonmark. >:)

In my current campaign we've had:
-Four characters settle down and start families (until something happened to drag them away for "one last adventure")
-Three character start a thieves guild
    -Two characters become tribal leaders
-One character reconnect with her estranged father, who happened to be a king, before accepting her position as a princess
-Two character become diplomats attempting to diffuse a war
    -One character start a church
It's worth noting that every player in my game has at least two characters that get traded out occasionally as the story demands. My wife and I take turns behind the screen, and it's her turn right now, so her character is raising her son. Two of my characters are the tribal leaders, and they're both ensuring the continued prosperity of their tribes while I play my third character.

Played a campaign where the GM asked what your player did over the weekend at the beginning of each session. You could make up anything. Like fighter joined a fight club and won every fight, except now GM has the player being beat down constantly by booky muscle until you return all of your winnings because they think you cheated. Or you could spend weeks after weeks pefecting a homebrew spell and GM gives you a way over powered spell. You learned real quick to be humble with what you did on your weekend.

Another great video! I have been a huge proponent of downtime for years! I always hated the ideas that characters went from 1st to 10th level in a month lol. Right now I'm running the Tomb of Annihilation and one of the things I HATE is that hardly any time has passed and the only "downtime" has been them travelling for weeks in the jungles. Sure, some time has passed, but in 8 months they've gone from 1st to 11th level! Just bugs me, lol. For the past number of years and homebrew campaigns I've run, I always include some aspect of downtime to make sure time flows. But your ideas have really sparked some great ideas! Love the complications idea. Again, as I mentioned elsewhere, all your videos are making me pumped to run another campaign, even just a short one. Cant wait to finish of ToA to get the next one going!

For city-based games and the like, I like to hack in the Faction rules from Stars Without Number. As the players get a bit of notoriety, I like to have various factions reach out to individual players who may be sympathetic to their causes. This gives the player the opportunity to go on a solo adventure or pass along the info to the rest of the party to do something about it if they weren't quite as sympathetic as the faction thought...

I let my Four Winds players level up during downtimes that last at least two weeks, since they all have cool activities and things to explore and people to talk to. I also let them attempt skill challenges to gain Expertise in a skill, or to learn a new Feat, provided they're proficient in whatever it is they're attempting to train. Now that they *all* have preferred downtime activities (one is unlocking lucid dream powers as a Psi Warrior), and the players are asking for another level up, I think they deserve a training arc. Thanks to *Jordan Nguyen* and to you, *Dungeon Coach!*
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I've also supplied the party with NPCs they must keep alive in order to train Improved Grappler and Improved Alchemy, among a few others. If the Four Winds can shepherd these Fey "green" hogoblins through a few more days of dangerous riverboating in extremely hostile territory, they'll have acces to them during their level-up downtime in civilization. Also, the Four Winds level up by milestones, and they've only gone from lvl 6 to 7 after incredible feats against overwhelming odds (and even that happened sooner than I anticipated because they accidentally *made themselves the Four Winds).*

It's lame how it works RAW for 5e. I'm sure you have some genius fix for this cause that's just what you do...Are you planning on ever doing a video about this?? What's some quick rules you use? I'm looking at some alternate rules that gives a +1 or +2 instead of advantage with some other rules mixed in there. Jut wondering if you'd share your brilliant thoughts on this! Thanks dood! Chris Merrick thanks for the high praise man!
Check out my combat rules video and I talk about flanking there!
      But here it is basically!
Like you said funny enough lol
      +2 for flanking creature
And if a creature is flanked they can’t Vet opportunity attacks vs the targets they aren’t facing
And if a creature is “overwhelmed” (flanked by 2 or more beyond the one they are facing) I make it a +5 to the roll!
But some of the other stuff depends on if you use “facing” rules or not!
ALSO some creatures CANT become overwhelmed because that’s part of their “special abilities”

I have a question maybe even a vid idea, I'm trying to think of a way, to use the actual players abilities in the game. For ex. maybe a players knows how to play the guitar and is playing a bard. Sometimes, ( dm gets to choose ) you can tell the player to play a song on the guitar instead of rolling the dice, depending on whatever criteria you wanna use, he succeeds or not. I feel like rolling the dice always can take a bit away of the game, wanna spice it up, homebrew something knew, but I have only been mastering for 1 year, could you help out in some way?

Gonna be honest: not a huge fan of the fast-talk hand movements punchy style of info delivery. Not sure if that's a thing that's been there from the start? I don't think so since I've seen most of your videos, but it's a bit... eh. Just some feedback.
Also, I am greatly interested to see that series you mentioned creating on sentient magic items.
