One of my favorite is when the party I was in made a base of a town. I was a wizard and I would practice magic out in the fields and entertain people in the tavern with cantrips. When a kid came up to me and asked to be my apprentice so my character would do research in the town and teach the kid from then oh when he came back to the village and it was cool to see how the kid became more powerful as the campaign went on and I taught him spells.

Oh this is a great idea! (which i'm adopting btw lol) The wizard in my current game is a teacher IRL, she would love the idea of teaching a kid in D&D and watching him grow. Thanks for sharing!

I'm a first time dnd player and I picked a gnome artificer. That gave me the idea of hand crafting my team's own magic items. And since I picked the Alchemist subclass I want to make healing potions. My guy is the only one with a tool proficiency, having 6 of them. Downtime? Jeff Jeffry doesn't know the meaning of downtime.

I’ve always hand waved in town activities but I’m currently world building (about a week or two from completion) where my 4 players basically start off in their “Home Cities” and it will be a VERY realistic type thing where they’ll eventually meet each other or they won’t. But if I manage to keep the whole thing running smoothly it would turn out like 4 1-on-1 campaigns that have the potential for players to live out their stories and meet one another, become friends, decide if they want to party together so-forth and so-on blah blah blah, but I hope that it will have a very real-world feel and this episode was SUPER helpful and gave me some insight into ways I can accomplish this goal, thinks SOOO much.

Way late to the party, but I kind of laughed when you mentioned clothes shopping. My current character is a cleric of Wee Jas... who, in the Greyhawk campaign setting, is the goddess of death, but ALSO the goddess of vanity. So my DM was all "oh so yeah you're our grave cleric but your goddess also wants you to be fashionable."

    • @therealkatalen
      @therealkatalen 4 роки тому +1

I laughed about the clothing too cause one of my groups has 2 changlings in it, who are obsessed with clothing lol it's like first question in any new town lol

Edit: Sorry for the long read, but I think it'll be useful information for any players/DMs interested in crafting.
There are unconventional ways to make magic items that aren't discussed much in the core rulebooks.
In the past, I had a Ranger that helped kill some Ankhegs. He ripped off the mandibles and used them as scimitars, and as a bonus the DM said that the acid glands gave them acid damage until the glands disintegrated. So, eventually I took them to a Wizard and payed him to use preservation magic so that the acid damage was permanent. I took the material from the other two mandibles and scales from Yuan-Ti than we killed (for flexibility) and made a longbow out of them.
I took the remaining scales and fashioned them into leather armor to make scale-studded armor. It has the same AC as studded leather, but has a minor buff against magic, as Yuan-Ti have resistance to magical effects.
Matt Mercer has his own ideas on crafting in Critical Role campaign 2, in which an entire arc is spent trying to reforge a legendary weapon, starting episode 70 something.
The way Matt Mercer handles it was through Exotic Materials. I won't get into spoilers or anything, but an example of these materials would be, say, from Skyrim. The snow at the very peak of The Throat of the World is magical by nature, and it never melts. Use that as a crafting material and it can create wonderful effects.
Maybe you need a legendary bow to slay an ancient evil. A certain Exotic Material, Hartwood, may do the trick, though it is difficult to attain. When a tree dies, its life force recedes into the core and fades out of existence. If it falls in the Feywild, there's a chance the core will remain intact, and it makes for an incredible crafting material.
I'd recommend looking into the Unearthed Arcana on Exotic Materials, or looking into Exotic Materials from previous editions and looking at their effects on items when used in crafting.
It may take a lot of homebrew and creativity, but you can do some cool things with it.

I just want to start out and say that you guys are doing an amazing job! I am fairly new to Dungeons & Dragons and I cannot be happier that I found you guys. I am starting a campaign that is 7 deadly sins apocalypse. I feel like you guys would really like my character ling chili fire. He is a halfling sorcerer who all he wants to do is chili and his ultimate goal is to own a tavern. Keep up the great work guys!

I play a bard that has focused on nature music. I own a A vineyard and a brewery, the rogue and I own multiple taverns and inns. We have slowly monopolized the lands wine and ale, along with where people buy the drinks and stay. Needless to say we’ve become rich!

well in specific detail I only allow the ranger can collect parts required to make the object and few npc who can make it for them or if they take tinkering or blacksmithing proficincy to make it themselves. the npc would make it for them for gold but if they make it themselves it would have a bonus feature or something.

    I love this Video Guys.
I am currently in a Homebrew campaign with some friends I met in Neverwinter. Only 4 sessions in I am at level 4 Male Dragonborn Barbarian/ Weaponsmith Named 'Puffin' Stuff DainkGrass'. In the second boss fight while enRaged I rolled a Natural 1 on a hit to an undead Goblin Warlock... Screaming while my Great Axe slipped out of my hand and went sailing through the Portal that the Warlock was summoning Gouels and Plague rats from... The Rogue in the Party Downed him with the next arrow from her crossbow. Closing the Portal!!!! My Great Axe gone... forever!
Now weaponless I spent the next week of downtime forging a weapon. My First MorningStar I named 'Genisis'. Had to trade all the weapons to the townsfolk for use of the forge, which had sat idle for years. my only tool a worn-cross pein hammer. I had to first forge tools... Gather resources scouted out a mine for future iron ore.... etc...

Honestly the way you describe down time days. Sounds fun. I mean I would love a whole group that has an open world withoout adventure hooks and a plot at all and we spend all the sessions just rp immersion in the world. Like a whole semester of taking a foreign language in college but 3 months of dnd rp through infernal language classes would be awesome.
Oh and I'm studying fashin in college so naturally my first time playing dnd was side tracking away from the group when we got to a big city with a market, just to browse textiles. I could spend hours browsing textiles and touching and feeling and than sitting with a sketchbook irl and I deff drove the group crazy esp the dm. He wanted to skip downtime entirely and he hates shopping, and in our gaming sessions I kept trying to wander off and rp my shopping on him

I want to create a character who is a Tiefling blacksmith and his motivation in life is to create legendary weapons that go down in history so that he can prove to the world that Tieflings are more than just thieves and killers. I want him to be a character that can create magical weapons. Is that allowed? And how does crafting actually work in dnd? I can’t find a guide anywhere.

I'd like to think of downtime as the time to actually level up, whether by working out, studying or whatever. This way, on the next adventure, your character has some new things to show off when the time comes.
It would seem kind of odd to me to make all your PCs only level up by questing. Downtime just offers optimal study-time and recovery. So that characters can fully concentrate on the need for newer, better skills.

The party I'm campaigning with will most likely be making use of our tools during our next session:
    1. My character has smithing tools
    2. Another has either woodcarving or carpentry tools
    3. The third has stone-masonry tools
Since we lost our metal gear due to a corrosion/rust spell and our Dwarven stone-mason got us banned from a local gear shop due to being an idiot, scavenging for new equipment with possible repairs will be needed before we can return to where we had to retreat from; I'd rather not risk being banned from another shop.

My 2 of my PC's(my younger brothers) characters don't care about adventuring they just want to run their farm, they just can't afford to run their farm with out adventuring money.
It's really fun, I plan to give them a black dragon egg.
Also I'm going to have one of the villains attack their farm to make it personal. Not anything substantial just kill afew chickens maybe a gaint rat, hurt sqiy(kobold buddy) and burn the out house.
Just enough to piss them off.

I've spent a bunch of time planning this. I can't do it all here, but here's some basics:
-General Labor: doesn't consume whole day, just enough to sustain cost of living.
-Create your own stuff/services to make profits.
-Learn/Study/Train: I allow people to train Tool Proficiencies, and use them in many ways. From making money to creating new things, Tools help you do that. If you want to create an automobile, or a crazy bomb, or a new spell, you have to spend the learning, researching, or apprenticing with people educated in that field.
-Everyone needs prestige, making friends, doing favors, collecting useful contacts, friends in high places, people who will owe you one, charity.
      -buy/build a house. Buy/build a town. Buy/build a business. Start a family.
Use the Tool Proficiencies that exists as a good way to diversify tasks people can get into during downtime. I even made up a bunch of new ones.
