The following is from an interview with Jack DeJohnette in Down Beat magazine from 1978. You'll really understand the quote when you listen to his playing on Gun High and other ECM albums: “"That’s exactly the way I hear them. To me, cymbals are the bridge to the drum set-
they connect it up. Cymbals are like the thumb on the piano; the way you use your
thumb when you’re making an arpeggio run up the piano, that’s the way I hear my
cymbals in relation to the drum set. They are pedal tones, and in the overtones of the
cymbals are orchestra sounds, orchestra intervals. When I hear a cymbal I hear
thousands of tones and microtones.”
An interview with Manfred Eicher would be a dream, such a great label for so many years
I second the motion!
You've opened a door for me to explore. Thank you Michael.
Consistency is what set them apart. I have a ton of them. Recording quality ..created a real world of their own with a range of music as broad as possible. ME is a visionary.
Amazing! Would love to see some Abercrombie ECM!❤
You always bring the knowledge and passion to all the genres of vinyl you cover. This video is no exception! Thanks for sharing!
It's a great pleasure to hear you talking about Naná! Thanks!
Vasconcelos is an incredible album
Indeed, a series not to be missed. Great video, as always :)
Thank you for this, Michael. I’ve been anticipating these releases since I first heard the announcement. Appreciate the links too.
"Gnu High" is a must have ECM release, makes totally sense to start your collection with this one. Like many, I have an on-off relationship with ECM, acquiered them manically for some time, then got rid of most of them because my focus shifted somewhere else. I just kept a few essentials and "Gnu High" is among them. That said, I think there's a lot to discover with ECM still. Really hoping for a reissue of "Love, Love", which is not so easy to find anymore.
And yes.. Saudades is also terrific!
Really great review Michael. So informative and on point. I hope to receive these two LPs tomorrow. I know the ECM catalogue very well and can easily think of so many titles I hope will be included in this series. Thanks so much for what you bring to the VC...
This is very cool, I love ECM and of course Deutsche Grammophon.
It's good to see you back Michael!
These are really great videos, comparing the new to originals, a really useful and helpful video for us subscribers.
Thank you so much!
I'm looking forward to the arrival of my copies tomorrow. Great to hear that both the jacket- and the soundquality of the editions are top notch. Thank you for the informative video!
This is also what I was looking for I have collecting ECM for years. Actually I wrote to ECM for quite some time and ask them why they did `nt release there old albums caures people and friends I know could`nt understand why they did`nt open up for there old stuff. But so nice its happening now. so nice and good news for vinyl LOVERS:
Such an exciting release, I’m so happy more and more important labels are giving us the AAA reissues! Thank you for your part, I’m quite sure you have played an important role in getting us to this place. Can’t wait to hear them! ❤
Thanks for the informative video Michael! I will be on the lookout for the originals, both of the new reissues are on the way.
I’ll check these out. 👍
Hopefully ECM will never disappoint! 🎉
ECM has it together, making their remaster have the warmer feel is not only a smart direction, it gives you options as the OG is punchy with a narrow sound stage make sit a great option. Thank you and the video quality and information is Top Notch !
Sounds great I look forward to mine arriving. Thank god they are not Stoughton jackets. They are far better than that - like all ECM - none of the nasty, shiny, badly glued tip-ons that crack like badly bound books. Glad you like the sound too. Thanks Michael
Cool titles from a cool label.
I’ve heard of Kenny Wheeler played with Ronnie Scott if I remember correctly. I’m not familiar with the other artist.Interesting comparison Michael,I like your opinion on the original mastering more attack .
That’s what I prefer sound wise.
Cool video Michael, see you on the next one ✊
I hope the do the 1978 My Song by Keith Jarret (with Jan Gabarek ) again one of my favourits in the late 80this
You hope it's reissued...I'm assuming.
Thanks for the video. Pls don't forget Tone Poet. It's a pleasure to know your evaluation.
ECM is absolutely unique
WOW! Just WOW! I do not have originals of these two shown, but the ECM catalog is undoubtedly one of the finest record labels, ever. Period. I’m blown away by this news. Will Eberhard Weber’s records eventually be released? Ralph Towner?? Holy smokes, my mind is reeling …!
Yes, I forgot to say “THANK YOU, Michael!”
For this price i expected a stouten, glossy cover!!
Pressing is perfect. 😊😊
I ordered Kenny Wheeler, Gnu High today. Can't wait to give it a spin!
Nice review, thank you. As mentioned previously, the ECM videos on the Ken Micallef channel got me into ECM - something I'd long procrastinated. I've been enjoying a good run on previously owned ECM (both US and German originals) for the past year - happened upon a nice collection last summer. Have an OG US of the Vasconcelos that I enjoy - would very much like to hear that Kenny Wheeler (have another Wheeler LP Saved for Later at DISCOGS.) Had a few finds that didn't suit me and I've been struggling to connect with the David Torn releases which I expected to love and did - not. Started to turn my attention to some recent releases with the Avishai Cohen 'Naked Truth'. Hope they reissue some Garbarek.
Who’s mastering this series?
Why not show the record and label?
For me, it never makes sense to get several versions of a title unless it’s one of your absolute favourite albums. Do your research and buy the best sounding version you can afford of a title and then be done with it. There is so much great music out there to explore and spend money on. Why buy the same title over and over again? Having said all this, I think we are all grateful for your shoot outs. 😊
Spectacula like Dracula!
Really good news. Although I personally would prefer new ECM LPs that have NOT been available in this format before.
Agree, but those would all be digital so we're not gonna see them in this series.
Hello Michael
Do you know if the first pressings are from digital or analoque sources?
Gnu High is one of my all time favorite albums. Bought the original in 1977. The true star of Gnu High is Jack DeJohnette, who plays the drums like a piano. HIGHLY recommended. BTW... my copy will be here tomorrow!
Matte finish rules! In Germany you say Matt!
Wheeler original not gatefold . ECM didn’t do GFs generally
Does your wife ever get mad at how much money you spend on vinyl?😂
ECM was always a rarified look at European white jazz, even though it was widely known amongst jazzheads. The OGs are cheap , grab 'em while you can people
