    I lived in Las Vegas for 19 years and southern California for several more. The Mojave is absolutely breathtaking, imho. You did a great job of showcasing trains in a region not many people visit. Kudos and thanks!

      Cool, I didn't know you spent so much time in the southwest. I agree, it's a great experience to be out there in the Mojave desert. Good the video could convey that impression. This section is indeed not so easy to get to. Driving 40 miles into an area without cell service feels somewhat uncomfy nowadays.

      @@mbmars01 yes, you have to plan ahead when wandering off into the desert. Getting stranded is not an option.

    Ahhh... Alot to say about the video but i am short in my words, i see a great rail lover inside you, being a railfan i know how tough it is to get to remote places & shoot some thing different & special for the viewers, it isn't easy to be sitting at a remote place & shooting those trains, but hats off to you my freind you do an excellent job by recording some high quality actions. Your each video is a master piece in a respect.
    Thanks for uploading & greetings from Pakistan!!! 😊

      Many thanks for your detailed review and nice comments. I really appreciate such feedback. It's true, one cannot do this without dedication. I just love to venture out and learn to know new areas and how railroads work elsewhere. Some of the areas I visited are really remote. To reach Kelso or Cima, one has to travel 40 miles or so through desert and nothing but desert, no gas, no food, limited to no cell service... But it was fun and I'm happy I got to see some exciting action! Greetings back!

      In this video the heat effects look a little bit more dramatic than usual, because one can see the trains from very large distances. Typically, one doesn't have unobstructed views for many miles. This was really great and I'm happy the video could show that. Thanks, great you enjoyed it!

    When I lived in Vegas, a friend of mine and I used to go out to Cima to watch trains. We always had supplies to last us overnight in case we got stuck. The track grade has been changed since then, and the then common DD40AX's are all gone but 6936. I rode in one once to Cima and in an SD-40 back to Vegas. We were like 20 and didn't mind the heat all that much back then. The trains would fly out of Vegas towards Cima and we had a spot where we could see them coming a long way off from the east. It was a lot of fun, and once in a while, you would see a loco die on the climb.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому +2

      Very cool. I can imagine that an overnighter in the desert is a special experience. I would have loved to see the DD40s on that grade...

    I own a copy of 7ideaproductions Cima Subdivision, which goes pretty in depth on this route, including the inside of Afton Canyon. I recognized these locations right away and enjoyed this video very much. I wonder if any retainers were set on the coal train at 13:10. PSR eliminated some trains on this route since spring of this year, but good to see you had success at catching trains.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      Going to Afton requires special preparation. There's only a dirt road to the canyon and it's far from civilization. I decided not to go there. I was happy that I got to see some action. I didn't have great expectations initially, but I was satisfied with what I caught. I'm glad you enjoyed watching this video!

      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      Well, the I-15 follows the line only in some sections. Between Kelso and Cima, where I spent most time, the interstate is about 40 miles to the west. The "highway" that follows the line in this region was more like a small tourist road. It was actually very quiet at times. I don't know why the cars always showed up when I was filming :)

    Nice camera work and editing. Love the Mojave, New York Mountains, Kelso, Cima dome area. You had a nice shot of the dome and the Joshua Tree forest near the start of your video. I used to cut across there to get from Interstate 10/CA62 over to Interstate 15 at Nipton Road so as to avoid the congestion and crazies on I15 through Cajon/Victorville/Barstow going from LA to LV. I was surprised at the many vehicles on the Kelso/Cima road in the video, especially in July! That desert can be deadly in the summer, you can't be too prepared. My dad was a career UP employee, got his start doing annual audits at the various MOW facilities, he'd ride a "putt putt" motorized rail car to get around and he stayed in the Kelso depot back in the day when UP still operated it. I am old enough to remember riding the City of Los Angeles through there as a kid on my dad's pass. Have you ever shot in Afton Canyon?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      Thank you very much for sharing your story! That's awesome. I didn't expect someone who still has vital memories of an active Kelso period would watch this video. I'm glad you did! I also used the Nipton Rd to get to Needles, where I "officially" started my trip. I was tempted and had already taken the I-15 exit to take the road to the Afton Canyon, but then realized that this is a dirt road. I normally don't care, but I didn't want to ruin the rental car and turned around. Since this meant to spend more time in the Kelso-Cima region, it wasn't a bad decision I think.

    • @bobhayes8750
      @bobhayes8750 5 років тому

      @@mbmars01 Sure, that makes sense especially with a rental car. The area's not bad in the winter, though the days are quite a bit shorter and it will snow on occasion. I always carry a full 5 gal gas can, plenty of water, com gear (ham radio/gmrs/frs), first aid, protective clothing when out there. I've had to slam on the brakes to avoid range cattle in the dark a time or two. IIRC the Cima grade is one of or perhaps the steepest on UP mainline. UP has had some notorious runaways in Cajon pass but Cima is actually steeper. Great that you got out there to do the video. Another area on the legacy SL & LA RR that's not covered much is the Nevada desert north of LV and on into Utah through Caliente. UP 4014 will be coming through there and Cima sub and down Cajon later this year as I understand it.

    OKS !!! From what could be seen at the 9 min plus video ,,, those rail spikes have been pulled up & the rail was bouncing on the ties ,,is that from the expansion of the rails in that heat ??? Keep the videos coming & KEEP IT SAFE !!! WATCH THE RATTLESNAKES !!!!!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому +1

      I'm sure the heat has an effect, but there are maintenance crews out there who check the line regularly. I was actually surprised by the rather good condition of the line, given the harsh environmental conditions. Rattlesnakes don't come out in the blazing heat. Even they don't like direct exposure to the sun.

    This video is unbelievably beautiful, you captured the trains and the surroundings very nicely. The terrain is definitely much different than in Georgia. Union Pacific is my favourite railway and their trains here are simply amazing. The locomotives are not just filthy, but pretty faded too. I'm sure the strong desert sunshine kills the paint quickly. This will be a phenomenal series, I can't wait to see the new episodes. You're a true master! Did you see patched Southern Pacific locos???

For someone who isn't used to it, it's just amazing and potentially frightening, because it looks so dead. The famed Death Valley lies to the west, not very far away. Great you like the video! I think there's good reason to look forward to the next videos as they will have their unique moments. I don't think I saw one of those UP-patched SP engines this time, but I have caught a few before.

    I've watched nearly every video your channel has to offer. You are one of my absolute favorite rail cinematographers I've found, however, I would love for you to find a way to defeat the wind noise. Not an easy task I realize, but that would really perfect your vids. Thanks for providing great content!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому +2

      Well, thank you so much. I appreciate you like the videos, your loyalty, and your feedback. I have already reduced the wind noise in many sequences, but I certainly didn't want to get rid of it completely. I want my videos to be authentic. If it's hot, one should see the heat (which on can "feel" in this video); if the wind blows, one should hear it (without being overly annoying). Desert or mountains without wind is like a Ferrari without engine. It's all part of the "railfanning experience". You're welcome - and keep watching :)

    I'm curious about what survival gear you take with you on trips like these - just in case - when you can end up miles from anywhere - except a railway line. Given that you are not in your home territory (rental car gives that away) so have travelled by air to get there, your load has to be somewhat minimal. Re the friendly driver, he was probably indicating 'Hey, look, we made it!' Just a thought - how long between the two shots? I.e. from passing you near Kelso and passing you at Cima. I don't suppose you looked at your watch?

      In these days of "Precision Scheduled Railroading" you can find all kinds of "weird" combinations. We've had mixed-freight/intermodal combos here on my CSX home line as well. Maybe it has even been more common on UP before - I don't know. Or these were just previously bad-ordered cars that needed some quick fixing and then then they were put on the next available train. These things happen all the time.

      This was just a trip, call it a vacation :) Lol, I'm not a kid anymore, unfortunately. Well, I visited Tehachapi during that trip two weeks ago. It was great. I'm sure you'll like it.

    Have you already been to LA?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      You mean Los Angeles or the State of Louisiana :P ? Either way, the answer is "Yes". I visited Los Angeles, but I didn't shoot trains there (but in San Bernadino and along the coast south of LA).

    • @dpotts84
      @dpotts84 5 років тому

      Los Angeles. I live here now. Used to live in Atlanta. Could’ve shown you some great spots to railfan on BNSF and UP subs. Awesome video either way! By any chance did you catch the CSX ST70AH’s through Georgia?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      I thought so, cool! I'm sure there are great spots in LA. However, I generally avoid big cities on such trips because of the usually heavy traffic and my tight schedule. Good you like this video! No, I didn't go out for that train. To catch it in good daylight would have required to travel to North Georgia, which I did for the 911/1776 combo about a month ago. This time I decided against the 300-mile round trip due to lack of time and because actually none of the new units led that train. So, shots wouldn't have been great.

      mbmars01 gotcha! Well I’m pretty sure I’ll see it in one of your videos soon. I expect a lot of testing out of them with min the system.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      Yes, they will start testing in Florida and, who knows, one day might find one of them on a train I catch :)

    What does [6q][4k] mean

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому +1

      Good question! 4k stands for the 4k video quality and distinguishes these videos from earlier ones I filmed in HD. The first code labels the video to make it easier for me to archive them. It may also help viewers to keep track of my videos. Essentially, 2 digits of numbers 0-9, 26 capital letters, and 26 small letters (in this order) enable to encode some 3,600 videos, which should work for some time :) So 6q = 6*62+53 stands for video number 425 on my channel. There are 5 more videos on the channel that don't have numbers (promotional trailers), so the current total is 430. Check them all out :)

    Dont see much of a grade tho

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  5 років тому

      It’s 2.2%. This means 2.2 m height change per 100 m track. This is not a small grade. In some shots I think one can actually get a feeling of it.

    Hey, Listen mbmars01
    : this isn't your issue, but the clowns running YT need to fix this "Read More" trick they just started. Have you noticed that almost every comment now has a "Read More" tag on it? But when you click on it, there is NOTHING ELSE to read. I guess they think that they'll train us into clicking and clicking and clicking... but I'm getting tired of this trick.
    I watch YT to learn, and I read comments to learn more, and I don't appreciate this new waste of time. Maybe they'll listen to you, cuz they sure don't give a rat's tookus about my opinion. The only thing it's going to do for me is just skip YT and read more books (never a bad thing!).
    Anybody else tired of this nonsense???

      Some people simply want to write some more text and it’s YT’s way to make the list of comments look shorter. As you said, there’s nothing I can do about it.
