Everything, the sound design, the masterful camera work, the effects, the acting... it’s all perfect in this opening so much is told without a word being said
Yeah I watched this with my friend and we were kind of upset with the ending. No answers. But we still raved about it. Still do to this day. Imagine if they had a bigger budget to produce this?
Best opening scene ever. Love this movie. Dialogue needed work, as did the acting, but overall, very creative. I also loved how the ending totally went anti-Hollywood, killing off the new couple, and allowing the mentally disabled man to go through the exit.
@@CamMackay96 well yeah its an introduction to how the cube works and there are thousand of rooms finding him would be near impossible also the relevance was that due to his early death it means the group lost one of their roles so they had a disadvantage that could have saved them by the end
This movie had a big impact on me when I first saw it, but rewatching this scene reminded me that I also had nightmares about it. Cubes leading to more cubes…
@Disseminate4 - Ooh, nice! I have to check that out and Half Dead that @Omnibune mentioned. I'm also creating a project that will feature a Cube-like maze with death traps as I was thinking no one has done that (but I'll still do it to acknowledge the existence of this film that hasn't seen it).
I went to see this movie in its movie premiere, it was amazing. It's a work of art. The human being in all its splendor, the good and the bad that is part of it, the cruelty, selfishness, pathologies, even the most good person falls into madness, the human being is convinced. Rousseau argues that people are kind by nature, I would add bad too. The most helpless for which anyone gives a dollar, is the most rational and the one who has the least desire to live, helps the desire of another person, so at the end of the film sums it all up when the girl tells him " why you don't want to go out there.. "and he answers "outside is just the expect of the human being". Magnificent movie!
For the time it was made? I have yet to see many films that are half as good as this nowadays. And this was made on a $350,000 budget. That was peanuts then and even moreso now. Whoever made this is a genius.
Fun Fact: Two of the movie's actors reunited in 2003's Wrong Turn: Julian Richings, who gets slice-n-diced in this scene, played the mutant Three Finger & Wayne Robson, who portrayed Rennes, is the gas station dude aka old Maynard Odets.
When I saw this opening scene the first time I instantly was glued to the TV. The ending was a bit of a letdown but getting there was extremely suspenseful and entertaining.
What an beautiful yet extremely haunting way to start a movie, the people who made the movie obviously know how to make tension and drama and a feeling of dread flow through your veins
Cube is one of my favorite movies ever - original and interesting storyline, great acting and visual effects. Worth, Leaven and Holloway were my favorite characters. Too bad they died. Anyway I love this film and think that Cube series influenced Saw franchise, House of 9, Kill Theory and many other similar films. Cube is one of my fav horrors of the 90's - along with Deep Rising, Lord of Illusions, Copycat, Candyman, Body Snatchers, Alien 3, Man's Best Friend, Disturbing Behavior and Scream
One of the few films that actually made me cry. It's perfect and very underrated by common viewers. [SPOILER] The fact that the autistic boy is the only one who saves himself from this "cube", implies a lot as to what the writer was trying to say. There's a lot of existential stuff going on in the script, even the characters are called after real life prisons. It's all around a Kafkan nightmare. Check out the director's work, he has some interesting stuff, and it would seem to me that every film was heavily influenced by existential philosophy (Nothing made in 2003, and Cypher in 2002).
For many years I forgot about cube then all sudden I remember now. So now I'm about to introduce this movie to my lady. Hehe let's hope I forget again. I don't think she'll like this movie yet she'll enjoy it.
@darockk Yeah, the film didn't rely on big name stars or over the top special effects. What I liked about it was it was an original concept which you rarely see from big studios anymore. I didn't like the 2nd Cube because, well, it had already been done. Btw, this came out 5 years earlier than the 1st Resident Evil.
And as this video finishes, suddenly the world around you fades into a cube. There is a blonde girl crying in the corner, and a middle aged man in the middle, with slow breathing. You wish you were simply watching a video on youtube, but no, your mind has just become that hysterical- because of the cube.
I remember watching this movie as a kid and being so mind fucked. I think this is where I began believing that if I was in a life threatening situation I would just say "take me now!" 😂 because I do not have the intelligence nor patients to deal with this shit right here lmao
He woke up in a cube, got lost in a cube, and now he is cubes
I guess some people just fall apart when they get lost.
This scene teaches you so much about life and gives a very valuable lesson: Never step into unknown cubes.

The ASMR appeal of this clip is astounding.

This man is the most terrifying actor I have ever seen.
@Deadskin Studios Probably all of it.
Julian Richings.
Now I know where Resident Evil got the Idea from haha.
Wrong Turn 3, Brent's death.

Daniel Wootton um the 1st resident evil came out a year before

He chose the wrong room. That upset him so much that he fell into pieces.

I've been in love with it since i was a little shit. It was, and still is, addicting as fuck

Sam Buca The 3rd movie is a prequel in ways. Gives some answers, thought the movie isn't nearly on part with the first. Skip 2.
Man im a 90s baby this shit is a dystopian murder kinda of shit but tht first scene always haunted me

also the black man who let die the white woman without helping her is nice and totally anti hollywood sterotypes

This is why I hate looking through youtube comments some time. I havent seen the movie yet. :-/

It's a striking opening, but shame it never turned out to have any relevance to the rest of this movie... we never see this room or him again

They need to make this into a game, the makers of Portal should do it.
There is multiple Half Life mods of Cube, they're pretty fun

Nowadays directors and studios have crap ideas and just rehash old franchises. Movies like this are original and creative

The way the letters in the title of the movie appear slowly, piece by piece is just like the opening credits to the movie Alien (1979).
true, low budget, high concept, devoid of major stars, just a brilliant idea executed to perfection.
