Hmmm... I don't recall having any issued with the MMI Turret that was loaned in to the channel. I remember being pretty impressed with it over all. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had a totally positive experience. (They never offered a free watch)
Thanks for a great review. I appreciate your passion for watch collecting and I certainly respect your opinion on this subject. I love homage watches and I have quite a few in my collection. I don't have a large budget for watch collecting so the homage watch prices are great for me. I just can't see myself paying over $500 for a watch of any kind however there are watch designs that I enjoy which are only available from a Homage manufacture in the price range that I shop in. Rolex, Panerai, Grand Seiko, Seiko Prospex, and others make amazing watches and I love to read about the history behind the brands and the watches. As mush as I enjoy the big brands they are just a bit out of my budget for some pieces so I go with a good homage. It works for me and I don't have the cost of ownership worries. "Buy what makes you happy?" Well stated and I completely agree. Cheers!
Hey, Jay. That means so much to me. I hope as an homage fan you didn't feel any judgement. I have no issues with homages or those who collect them. I myself can't afford (and wouldn't anyway) the real Tudor. I wanted to like this watch and I actually really do like it. And yet I don't ever feel like wearing it. And that's why I feel conflicted. Maybe another homage down the line will float my boat. I was pretty positive on the San Martin I reviewed a while back.
Thanks for the review. It's really remarkable that almost nobody in the numerous reviews of the watch adressed the topic of the usability of the chronograph function and talks about any imperfections.
Good Day; I have the same watch! It works great! I also took it to Jamaica and went swimming with it. Can’t go wrong with the price point. It’s not perfect, well for my watch. I had to soak the bezel insert because the insert was of Alinement. I used grip solvent and with in 2 to 3 hours the insert came off and I re-aligned it perfectly. Grip solvent is used by golfers to remove old grip tape. Try it it is fool proof. Fill it to the insert bezel level. Good luck and enjoy it. 👍
I think this is one of their better offerings full stop. They got a lot more right here than they do on their most expensive stuff. As for homages its a touchy subject. These aren't going head to head with Tudor as if you can afford a Tudor, you buy one. But if you can't, then these are a viable way to get that look without going for a fake. Of course these homages aren't even in the same league quality wise, but it offers the aesthetic which is what people want. Where it starts to stop making sense is when the homage is nearly the same price as the watch its homaging, then you may as well buy the original. For me homages of old (no longer available) watches are okay as are those of the unobtainable ones. But if they're too close in price, then you may as well get the original. Just my take.
I agree that this looks like a standout from their catalogue, and was why I was finally tempted. I agree that some homage get close in price to the original. Some have made the case that some factory brands actually exceed Seiko in terms of quality and materials. That's one situation where you could maybe make a case for spending some money on an homage rather than the original. Although for me I'd take the Seiko.
I'm pretty sure you are not a watch snob but you did do 'a bit of a hatchet job' on the PD1718. Each to their own though and I appreciate that there can be variable 'quality' between individual watches... I'm a recent convert to homage watches - having bought 10 in the last 6 months. I bought the PD1644 "Daytona" homage with the faux Meteorite dial for under £30 GBP. It's a fantastic watch. Extra sub-dial provides seconds. Embedded date window. No snowflake hand. Screw down pushers and Chronograph work flawlessly. It's more than waterproof enough for swimming. 3-5 year battery life. What's not to like? Well, the lume is cr@p and leading edges of the clasp are a bit sharp. The latter is easily fixed in 2 minutes with a fine file and I rarely need to read a watch in the dark, so.... The biggest issue (for me) is that the lack of contrast between the hands and face makes it difficult to read 'at a quick glance' under certain light conditions. It does provide an excuse to stare at it's beauty for an extra milli-second or so though. In truth, I rarely wear the PD1644 - it's become my "dress watch". My daily wear is typically my Lige 6801 "Smurf" or Steeldive SD1953 (in Black). I love the automatic movement and they just look 'right' on my arm. Many people have commented on them favourably and have mistaken them for something a lot more expensive. It's a delight to explain the whole 'homage culture' to them..
I don’t have a white dial panda in my collection. I thought about this watch. I don’t think the VK 64 turns me on. I have a watch with the VK64 and it’s a great accurate quartz movement, it’s quartz though. That seems to be the sticking point. San Martin do a similar homage, about four times the price. I have other San Martin watches and I think they are brilliant. Their Tudor panda homage unfortunately for me comes with a manual wind ST19. I have a 1963 with this movement, as good as it is, I can’t be bothered with manual wind movements. So in the budget panda homages, this leaves the Sugess Dayona with the A Valjoux 7750. I am seriously thinking of getting this one. It maybe budget but it’s not that cheap.
Budget chronographs are really tricky. Either you get reliable quartz or unreliable Chinese movements. Step into the Valjoux and you get more reliability with a price and added thickness. It's a bit of a quandary.
Great video Alton couldn't agree more.you do get what you pay for the watch looks good but there is always a but.thanks mate.gday from Brisbane Australia
The PD brand does a lot of good stuff even for the flaws and occasional QC issues. BTW Your videos are wonderfully produced, v. Impressed and inspired, thank you
Nice video. I ordered the same. Since I can't get the Tudor ASAP. By the way. Haven't you been jn a boyband before? I swear you remind me of someone from a boyband.
I have no problems with any homage watch that has the company name or logo on the dial. I will get something similar to this maybe the new V4 with Meteorite style dial. Most can’t afford high priced watches. I will always choose several watches versus one expensive watch?
I love mine, no problems with my pushers or the bracelet screws backing out. The only dislike I have is the ugs on the dial - would look better without it.
Nice video Alton, I don't have this same watch but the very similar PD1644 Daytona homage white dial. Same movement. It however has the problem of thin stick hands with virtually no lume. In daytime it's fine though but I have it in a sailcloth strap. Don't wear it often anymore but it was a nice experiment at the price.
Before you give up on the Chinese specials, maybe you should go up a tier or two. I get what you're saying about feeling the watch, but I absolutely love my steeldive sd1979 (squale homage), that I wear it more than another of my branded watches
