You have to credit the people of Joplin for reacting on such short notice. They handled themselves admirably. Again, I'm simply stunned at the force of this storm.
This is heartbreaking to watch, but at the same time, beautiful, showing the resiliency of people. This series is great for chronicling the immediate aftermath of a devastating storm, seeing the tragedy thru a survivors "eyes". How has Joplin recovered in the year since?
You see the utter destruction in this video and think about the fact they only show a small portion of the destruction, it stretches miles west of where they are most of the time and then also stretches miles east, back by the Walmart the first come up on. The number of homes destroyed reached the 1000's, not just damaged, but literally destroyed beyond repair. Jobs were lost by the thousands because so many businesses were wiped out on Maiden Lane, Main Street and Range Line, all three the main roads that feed Joplin north/south routes. 20th - 26th Streets were the main west/east streets destroyed, totally wiped clear of standing buildings. It looked like a huge bomb went off that leveled the town, though only 1/3 was destoryed, 1/3 is still a large chunk of town.

This is not even the worst damage. Near the high school, old sturdy heart-pine built houses from the 1920s were swept completely away and all the trees around them. They didn't slap them together with cheap knotty pine and nail guns at top speed back then. Still was no match for this storm. It's simply unbelievable.

Ask any law enforcement or medical personnel and they'll tell you not to help unless you absolutely know you can. Doing so could worsen things.
I survived the 1974 tornado of Xenia Ohio. The devastation was about the same but so much more of it in Joplin. The most unbelievable tornado damage I have ever seen.. also just went through a tornado last Monday in Beavercreek Ohio. About 6 miles from Xenia. Such a glorious Act of nature with such a horrible outcome sometimes ..
Living in Washington state this tornado was such a horrible learning experience of what you poor people go though with a f5 tornado. It didn't seem real to me. To rebuild and go on with your lives is truly amazing. The lord only puts the strongest of people to live in tornado alley. Today march 30 2022 they expect bad storms. I will be praying for you all day.
Y'all are crazy in the comments. They live there, they're entitled to look at their own town. If youre not a qualified professional, getting out to "help" only complicates things. It's so easy to talk until youre actually in a situation like this.
I've heard some pretty horrific stories about the Joplin EF5 . Scary to think how many deceased were under all that rubbish. One girl I knew told me a story about finding body parts in her front yard 😥. Thx for the uploads
All you people commented that they didn’t help seem to be forgetting that they have a little girl in the back seat that they are trying to get to her momma’s!! I’m sure it would be a lot easier to help after she had been dropped off and safe somewhere. Wow.
All you armchair helpers are so high and mighty. Acting like you have any idea what you would have done in this situation is laughable. Good for them for documenting this in a raw and uncensored way that we don't get from news broadcasts. These dudes did nothing wrong.
This footage was all within 90 minutes of the tornado touching down. We had a 3 year old with us and when we left the house (to find the babysitters family who lived in the brick apts at the end of this video) we had no idea the scope of destruction we would run into. Never would of imagined it. We were not equipped to attempt side rescue missions during that intial drive. After leaving the child with family, We circled back around and were there to help that night and the weeks that followed. I couldn't hold a camera while I was helping so I understand the optics that these videos present in hindsight. We are much more prepared now in the event that we are ever in a situation like this again.
I remember that fire, my wife and I were on 23rd and Pennsylvania. If I was to go out on the back porch and look east I couldn't see two blocks with the houses and trees. Afterwards I could see to Rangeline and beyond. So disorienting....I was helping trapped people for about an hour and a half afterwards. I was only a couple blocks away from my house but I was legitimately lost. It took me a long time to get back home.
You guys were true legends in this tragedy. This footage will show the strength and compassion of every member of public to emergency services operative, children, fathers and mothers of Joplin MO. Being from the UK I have never seen this destruction this close to the epicentre. May god bless you all for miraculous spirit. ❤️ x
Ok so here's the thing. I saw your original video of when the tornado was close to your house. I saw you decide to get in the truck and drive around to "help". I then watched every single video, hoping to see stories of survival and heroism. You didn't help one single person. While the footage is educational, as someone who has never seen the damage that an EF5 tornado does, it makes me mad that you said you were going to help. Don't pretend to be something you're not. If you just wanted to film the total destruction, I would have respected you more for just being honest about it. As for people saying that they could have done more harm than good, please tell me what harm it would have done to have actually ASKED any of the massive amount of people that they just drove on by, if they needed anything? Maybe everyone would have said "we're ok", but they still could have asked. THAT wouldn't have endangered them, or anyone else, and THAT would have been the HUMAN thing to do.
I haven't read all the comments but the one blaring irritation that stood out to me was the jerk who was driving. The camera guy couldn't say anything that the driver wouldn't snap at him! Sure, you drove past housing complexes & schools without investigating for survivors, but the footage serves a valuable purpose. Thank you for recording & posting.
What gets me in these videos is the people walking zombified, like what do you do where do you go, your house gone cant go drive somewhere cars gone, always wondered where all these people seen just walking are going, i doubt they know themselves. And its about to be dark, all emergency people are doing search and rescue and if lucky enough to not be hurt where do u go what do u do? Just a fucked up situation.
They have command centers where they stay until they can rebuild. Many live in trailer homes or move to a nearby town until they can rebuild. There is always a system set up in event of natural disasters like this. Communication is limited because of destruction.
@@shirleypaff3068 I'm absolutely so sorry you guys had to go through this. This was definitely the deadliest and costliest tornado that year in 2011. Where were you when this happened
Good job recording the devastation. I hope your driver friend found his friends and family safe. I can only imagine how confused you felt as a newcomer to town trying to help your friend and his friends and child in the midst of this tragedy.
@8:50 The driver is devastated as he recognizes the apartment building of Bill & Beth and tells the passenger who is taking the video. Per the video description, the guy taking the video had just moved to Joplin and was living temporarily with his friend who was driving the truck. The driver is clearly devastated by what he is seeing and frustrated that he can’t help much because his young son is with him.
at 5:56 those appear to be trailers, trailers should be made of tank parts, yet they continue to make these flimsy homes, there should be something done about it, they are always hit the hardest.
I went through the town some time after this going to Tulsa, and it was unbelievable to see even after almost a year. it was all like just a big flat field were houses were.
As much as the "go and help" thing sounds like the best thing to say here, seriously if they'd went and helped they might have caused MORE problems than filming. If they had no training in how to do debris rescue, they may well have collapsed the debris onto someone worse, got electrocuted or in a collapse themselves, and unless they were trained doctors or paramedics, they could have hurt someone trying to help. If you live in a tornado area, you should get training in debris rescue, turning off gas mains, and learn first aid/rudimentary medical care, and you should consider having a vehicle that is large enough it can be used as an emergency transport or to tow debris - but if you can't do this somehow, it's better to just stay back and record the damage, since that serves valuable purposes of its own, everything from helping people document their insurance claims to scientific damage surveys for meteorologists and architects/builders/construction professionals, to the message that THIS IS WHY YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE TORNADO WARNINGS. Recording this wasn't selfish or pointless or useless - it was one of many ways to respond and probably the best the uploader had at the time :)
+Sethy Trashroad I agree but i think i would have went & looked for people. I know well enough not to move them & cause more injury but i would have at least tried to find people even to hold their hand & try to talk & comfort them until proper help came. Even if it was just one person.. to be there when they are alone, scared, trapped, in shock.. just to help one... everyone is different & in devastation like this no one can blame another for what they did or did not do. Until you live it.... and are in it...you may act in ways you never thought.
Sethy Trashroad your reaction is precicely why there are so many by standers at accidents! But even if you're not trained you can do a whole lot to help. you can help clear out debris from the road, locate victims and get medical help for them, just hold a hand and give some comfort...... or something as simple as giving someone a ride home.... really, there's a whole lot you can do! I do understand that not everybody's a hero, but I'm baffled that so many people are to scared or egoistic or whatever their reason is to stand by and do nothing. Helping is normal, watching and doing nothing is cowardly and egoistic.
helping after a traffic accident is law here in the netherlands. (we don't have tornados over here...) and I do think helping is part of human nature. at least it is a big part of me.... if you end up on my operating table after you've been hit by debree, I'd even help some one like you.
Warfighter Eternal Even before i was a pro i was allready a 'helper'. I think it's in the genes. I do understand not everyone is like that....but even in a case like this there are things you CAN do. not because you have to or want to, but just because it's the right thing to do. imagine yourself being pinned down by debree, wouldn't you liked to be pulled out?
Eva Stapaard So what if someone lives with anxiety, autism and other diagnoses that makes it hard for them to help, shall they then risk to have an anxiety attack while helping? And I say this as someone who has anxiety, autism and some other diagnoses that makes it hard. So am I egoistic for looking on, when its all I can do to not risk more hurt and damage?
This is good footage, but I would have to put down the camera and helped people. I see too many people standing around for my liking. If you arent injured help the other people! I know there were injured and dead in all that rubble.
There's a day and a play for everything. Videotaping this is important too, and these people who recorded it did their part and we now have it. Those that helped did their part, and people were helped. Those that died did their part too. Everything has its purpose and none of us knows why, so we can't judge any of it.
Nice job not getting involved . It's always sad to see random passersby pausing their life for one moment to help save others 'lives. /s Good luck living with that on your consciousness . Rest in peace to all the victims
Two weeks after it hit , i went to a friend's home well used to be home. We sat outside that night and the quietness of the city left an eary feeling. Total darkness , heartbreaking yet beautiful at the same time
I saw a lot of this footage on a weather channel special they just had on,, its just unbelievable, but I commend all of you who ventured out to help others, selflessly worried about them and not yourselves and youf stuff,, I cried a lot while watching these vids, just so unbelievable
Young Lady, you brought up a very good topic maybe you can research and describe the difference between Self-fullness, Selfishness, Selflessness. really it's a lesson for us all to be mindful of
In the Uk we only see these things on CNN and they never seen real, after watching this it made me shiver at how devastating tornado,s can be! Thank you for sharing, you are lucky guys for having it skim your homes!! God bless all those families!
I was in NC to be there to watch my lil bro graduate high school when this and the following storm systems passed through ks and mo(i live in KC). Had a tornado form that was headed towards my house(but luckily didnt touch ground). And before that, in april 2011, the series of tornadoes that hit, Sanford, Wilson, Raleigh, Cary, NC, were all around where my mom and lil bro live NC, (large sheet metal landed on her next door neighbors deck). Too close for comfort, but we were lucky. Bless Joplin!
Incredible seeing how the destruction worsens going through all your videos... and how hard it must be to survive in one of those flattened down houses... thanks for sharing the footage.
I wonder what happened to the little girl’s father at 12:05? Was she home at that apartment building during the event? Everyone in these videos have their own story on this disaster, and I’d be more than interested in hearing each and every one of them! Glad to see how the hit zone was rebuilt better than ever before, according to before and after pic’s, and even more updating and new construction in other areas of Joplin.👌
Thank you for your chronicals! Oh, my, word, I had noo idea it was this bad! The TV News doesn't it do it justice, as like your films have! I can't even fathom the fear everyone had, and for as wicked this storm was, it's a miracle so many people survived!
Not a chance in hell I could go through that and just ride around n not help.. Worst thing people can do in something as that,, drive around just as soon as happens and film offering zero help.. Fkn gawkers..
He keeps saying he's looking for a gas station. What he needs to find is an auto parts store and get a siphon hose. Then go back to that car dealership or any wrecked car with it's gas tank still intact.
I do think you had some of the most awesome videos as far as destruction goes, but the thing that kind of bothered me was the fact you didn't even once put down the camera to help those in need.. for instance at the Wal-mart lady was talking about a door greeter that was under a pile of bricks.. if it had been me I would have tried to help. I live in Oklahoma and we see this stuff alot.. everyone needs a helping hand.
the song at the end appears to be completely wiped from the internet, all the links in the description for it are dead and theres only 2 youtube videos of it with from live performances with less that 1000 views from 10 years ago. imma turn it into the next lost wave
Gentlemen, the video speaks for it self, and one comment said they saw the damage footage on the weather channel. The woman you offer shelter from the element at first accepted, she really needed a sounding board, she was in shock also she said someone was on the way and was told to stead fast, one of you said you were new there, then that said she should call and tell the person to meet her in another place, that added to the stress and trauma, she just wanted out! she sounded ambiguous - to be in limbo, needed a sounding board, reaffirming it's all very real, she's not losing it, help her relate. you both sound like decent beings my personal experience is through the red cross, medical and radio communications during and after earthquakes and tsunamis, it brings the best out of most the people, a small percentage will do things out of desperation , and even a smaller percentage think only of themselves. There are laws which prohibited during and immediately following a state of catastrophic natural disaster for anyone but first responders or personal family in search of ken to be occupying the roadways,, anything other is just adding congestion. to roadway you can research this, i get a sense you both can find a niche to be helpful as first responders in your community I didn't vote this video down, I hope my advice will be of constructive value to you, take it for what it's worth, I''m Just Tony
All of that knowledge is good for people knowingly going into a disaster area, but these gentlemen felt the outter effects of a storm so they couldn't have known what they were driving into. Maybe once they got to the wal mart it would have made sense to get out and not let the vehicle block said roadways, but I mean how could they have known it was going to look like that? Appreciate your knowledge tho and will keep it in mind if I know something like this happens near me. However I feel a lecture of "you should have known this" really is meaningless to the actual situation going on. Remember this was FRESH to them in the moment, for all they knew it was just a nasty storm with minimal damage and uprooted trees, but the further into it they went the worse it got so it becomes a matter of where can I go and how can I help. At least help was offered.
In 2007 I moved all my stuff from storage in Springfield mo to Minnesota, had planned on living there but life gave me a detour. I drove thru Joplin a few times and this touched my heart that the suffering must of been horrible. I am grateful that more people didn't lose their lives and so saddened by the ones that were lost. RIP
Excellent documentation. You guys are getting a lot of flak on here for not helping, which you could have maybe, but people are in shock for the most part, and during this kind of trauma its difficult to comfort someone when they've just lost everything, and maybe loved ones as well. You at least have to try though.
Thank you for sharing these five videos with the world. They really show just how large and destructive this tornado was. Most of us can't imagine just how big it was. Also your vid shows the raw emotion and shock on the townspeople's faces. Watching that girl point out to her friend where her room used to be was simply heartbreaking. Also I notice how you and your partner's demeanor changed as the videos progressed. Im sure you guys had no idea what you were going to come across. By video 3 yo
This is why they don’t want random people coming down to help.all these guy did was drive down there to record some videos for UA-cam.they had no intentions of helping anyone and you can clearly hear and see people that need it.
They had a 3-year-old child in the back seat they were trying to get somewhere safe. Once they did so they went back out and helped. You can hear them talk about the kid and hear the kid a couple times during the series.
I know they didn't seem helpful but there is value in documenting this tragedy. I think because they were new to the area that they were actually able to go forward and keep recording where someone else would have been looking for family and friends.
As a resident and survivor of this tornado, I can only say that the very last thing we needed in our time of crisis was another videographer clogging up the roads. My daughter was at a friends house just outside of town when the tornado hit. Two days past before I was even able to get to her. Every block this man drove had people who needed help. If you have a child with you and are unable to help, get the hell out of there. Period.
I'm not familiar with Joplin, but the Dillon's neighborhood looked to be in the center of the tornado. It looked like the Plaza Towers neighborhood in Moore.
For the one who moved from Seattle to Joplin, I'm sure you had to have felt as if you were in a tunnel. The footage is amazing and I hope I never see anything like this for real. You and Sam had to have been literally shaking from terror just seeing this.

All you armchair helpers are so high and mighty. Acting like you have any idea what you would have done in this situation is laughable. Good for them for documenting this in a raw and uncensored way that we don't get from news broadcasts. These dudes did nothing wrong.
Can I ask why you guys didn’t assist with rescue?
Yeah from the comfort of the vehicle.. not helping anyone.
@@JakeGreen86 yeah, but they recorded OTHER PEOPLE caring and trying to help. They're true humanitarians 🤣
These goons are cowards. They did nothing to help at all. All they wanted was footage for views. Sad examples of life.
@@gardenstateflatlandb yet they caught the best footage of the damage I've seen so who cares
@@Toyeboy89 Lives are worth more than footage, but who cares, right. They got the shots.
At 5:50 it says E 22nd and Indiana Ave intersection Couldn't find that on the map. I was wondering if that was E 22nd and Illinois Ave instead.
Nope it was Indiana. That's where the churches and school was.
This looks so apocalyptic/ end of everything.. I wanted to cry watching this whole series.
I lived through this..

I'm just amazed at the lack of any reaction from the filmers as they drive past dead people and loss.
That's the gamer generation for you--it's all entertainment.
Almark Dude... Buildings made with solid concrete were completely flattened.
Thanks for sharing this.
Sethy Trashroad
your reaction is precicely why there are so many by standers at accidents!
Warfighter Eternal
Even before i was a pro i was allready a 'helper'.
Some areas just flattened. Crazy. Definitely wouldn't survive above ground.
This is good footage, but I would have to put down the camera and helped people. I see too many people standing around for my liking. If you arent injured help the other people! I know there were injured and dead in all that rubble.
Let's drive into the path of total destruction and see if we can find a gas station.
Damn, all we're finding is needy injured people.
Good luck living with that on your consciousness .
Young Lady, you brought up a very good topic maybe you can research and describe the difference between Self-fullness, Selfishness, Selflessness. really it's a lesson for us all to be mindful of
These guys didn't help anybody
Incredible seeing how the destruction worsens going through all your videos... and how hard it must be to survive in one of those flattened down houses... thanks for sharing the footage.
last couple of minutes of this video is truely heartbreaking
Fkn gawkers..
where can we see your 2 year anniv video?
Thank you for sharing this💔Glad you're okay!
Are these the guys in the first video when the tornado hit the house ?
Amazing, horrifying footage!! Our prayers are with Joplin! Can I ask what is the name of the song that was played at the end????
Awsome Job on taping it I hope Joplin can have a speedy recovery ,
He keeps saying he's looking for a gas station.
Enma Ai are you a trained debris removal first responder? Probably not and neither are the guys filming.
The guy she was talking about, was found dead. His head was crushed beyond saving.
Very clear video dang
the song at the end appears to be completely wiped from the internet, all the links in the description for it are dead and theres only 2 youtube videos of it with from live performances with less that 1000 views from 10 years ago. imma turn it into the next lost wave
Gentlemen, the video speaks for it self, and one comment said they saw the damage footage on the weather channel.
The woman you offer shelter from the element at first accepted, she really needed a sounding board, she was in shock also she said someone was on the way and was told to stead fast,
one of you said you were new there, then that said she should call and tell the person to meet her in another place, that added to the stress and trauma, she just wanted out! she sounded ambiguous - to be in limbo, needed a sounding board, reaffirming it's all very real, she's not losing it, help her relate.
you both sound like decent beings
my personal experience is through the red cross, medical and radio communications during and after earthquakes and tsunamis, it brings the best out of most the people, a small percentage will do things out of desperation , and even a smaller percentage think only of themselves.
There are laws which prohibited during and immediately following a state of catastrophic natural disaster for anyone but first responders or personal family in search of ken to be occupying the roadways,, anything other is just adding congestion. to roadway
you can research this,
i get a sense you both can find a niche to be helpful as first responders in your community
I didn't vote this video down, I hope my advice will be of constructive value to you, take it for what it's worth, I''m Just Tony
Tony Vei you didn't help so you can't watch this video.
Like a reverse Seinfeld Good Samaritan law?
RIP
2:10 dead bodies in that truck?
Actally it was. How sad.😥
I wonder how many people died under rubble while you DROVE BY!!!
You can hear them talk about the kid and hear the kid a couple times during the series.
this series was just unbelievable, what a storm that was!
Narrative is right on, nicely done, thank you. From Seattle on Puget Sound.
Why did they tell people they wanted to help when they didn’t want to help anybody who needed it? Shame on them. Cowards.
Holy Smokes! It looks like what I imagine the apocalypse to look like.
what is that beeping noise im hearing? are those smoke alarms im hearing?
Wow this is utter devastation!!!
At Dillon's Pharmacy area , i think its the worst affected place???
For the one who moved from Seattle to Joplin, I'm sure you had to have felt as if you were in a tunnel. The footage is amazing and I hope I never see anything like this for real. You and Sam had to have been literally shaking from terror just seeing this.
This tornado didn't uproot the houses leaving chunks of the houses. Moore tornado wiped them out.
many homes do not here due to the limestone. That is why most homes either have storm shelter or a safe room that have rebuilt.

Joplin lost. Badly.
Hopefully, this is the closest the US will ever come to being a war zone.
Thoughts and prayers for the people of Joplin as they continue to recover and rebuild their scattered and shattered lives.
Seen so many like this. But they didn’t just drive by. They saved lives and saw many dead searching for ones still alive. How could u just drive past when many didn’t have cars to take them to the hospital 😒😒😒 I’d rather not see the footage
Good documentation.
Thankyou for posting these videos.
Joplin holds a special place in my heart. (before and after tornadoes)
I hope the town is recovering.
God Bless to all.

Thanks for bringing Eli /Porter to my attention \m/
That’s so sad and heartbreaking but being there would’ve been a different level altogether!! I couldn’t imagine!!
Brick homes are stronger. I think basements are the most important factor in surviving a tornado and many of these homes didn't have one.
you have one hell of an eye.
Name of song please
Joplin is by far the worst devastation I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of tornado vids.
If you want to see a "gangsta" and come to your conclusions, go to 10:15 thru 10:30. Just standing at a destroyed neighborhood's street corner with his britches hanging low all by himself, sizing up the area.
Normally, wouldn't have thought about it with all the devastation but this guy really stands out and we know looting went on. Semper Fi
fleetwoodray are you implying that he was a looter?
guess what, there are black people who live in Joplin, how do you know he wasn't standing there in total shock, having just lost everything? Comments like yours don't help anybody. Unless you see him commit a crime it's best to say nothing at all.
dibaby1970 it was most likely either his neighborhood or he ran all the way there because a relative lived there
its really shitty of them to say he is a looter :/
+Pasta I think so too, really shitty! That was the worst day of their lives for so many people, looking for trouble that doesn't help anybody, but accuses someome of something there is no proof of is petty and hateful.
Too bad you didn’t show St John. Funny they elected to rebuild on a spot high above the highway. I always think they look like a bullseye in that new spot
thanks for the informative video and for not talking the whole time , plus I didn't hear any profanity from you guys... you offered help to those you thought needed it and stayed out of people's way...just curious though, are the neighborhoods being rebuilt to look like the old ones? Are most people moving back to their same property? - Matt, Ohio
I wanted to see what an F5 was like and we are so screwed if one of those hit us. Every time a tornado warning goes off, I will think of this.
