My advice on how to measure the width of the book is not perfect. For most books with a rounded spine, measure the width from the fore-edge side of the boards to the shoulder of the book, not the outside of the spine. If it is a square-back books it's much the same thing. But for a rounded book if you go to the outside of the spine the slip case will extend past the shoulder and be unsupported by the book and likely to get damaged (the slipcase, not the book).
I wish I could see your videos at the very beginning of my bookbinding adventures! Now I feel I was learning so slowly, and your clever tips and well-thought solutions make things much easier. You have very clear and nice way of explaining things and I really enjoy watching your videos. I also checked on some resources and names you mentioned, and they were really helpful. Thank you for your work, it's so kind of you to share your experience and opinions!
Your videos have been super helpful to me! Thank you for making them. It looks like you're interested in T.E. Lawrence. He used to be an obsession of mine. I have a 1935 copy of Seven Pillars which, now that I know how to do it, I'll make a slip case for.
I was given a very good condition 4th impression of SPoW when I was 19 and this led to me taking a bookbinding course. I ended up obsessed with TEL and bookbinding:) All the best, Darryn
Howdy, I watched this one last night - I love this slipcase. Thank you for sharing and the pdf file too. few minutes later -- Ok I was successful in making a mini one - whoohoo
@@DASBookbinding Too much fun! I watched your video twice and looked at pdf and made a 2"x4" slipcase on the spur of the moment. Thanks again. Off to watch some more!
Fascinated by T.E. Lawrence as a kid and lived in Israel for 4 years as a teenager. Sadly too young to drive and border politics got in the way! Great to see anyhow.
Thank you for this tutorial and PDF. I managed to create 2 slipcases for 2 A6 sized books with cardstocks that are slightly lower than 240gsm, so it is not as sturdy.
10 minutes, 20 minutes, somebody's got a loose sense of time ^_^ I have a few of these on some of my Japanese books, it seems to be a standard thing for their textbooks and reference books. I don't have need for this now, but future-me does, thank you.
Great video and very useful. I had a go last weekend (far longer than 10 minutes of course!). But I think I got the measuring amiss. I measured the full width of the book, rather than, what I think I should have done, is measure to the edge of the spine (shoulder is it?), so the curve of the spine sits outside the slipcase. I’ll know better next time! Thanks again for all your wonderful videos!
Is there a disadvantage to glueing the slipcase from two parts, i.e. using adhesive along all three edges of the book? I have some heavy paper (250-300 g/m^3) that might work; larger sheets of manila is more difficult to find locally. 🤔 Also, would it be an idea to support the heavy text block in a larger book by adding a piece of board, to fit between the covers, to the bottom inside of the case )or to the shoe you demonstrate in another video)? Or is another type of enclosure better if one is worried about sagging pages?
Thank you so much for sharing this. Exactly what I was looking for to give my books an extra layer of protection. I do have a question, though. What kind of glue are you using? And will it attract silverfish? I had a bit of a scare with a tiny infestation and had to move some of my more precious books to a separate enclosed shelf to keep it moisture free and airtight. Hoping to avoid a repeat.
Paper attracts silverfish. At most the adhesive is just like adding a bit of seasoning. I mostly use PVA/EVA and MC, which I doubt silverfish like. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't get them. I try and put pyrethrum based baits here and there on my bookshelves, especially around the base. I usually change these about this time of year before going into summer and then again late summer.
@@DASBookbinding Hey there! Thank you so much for replying so fast. I'll be sure to get some of the type of glue you mentioned. Right now I'm in the middle of dusting and reorganizing my shelves, so it feels like the perfect time to try creating slicases for a few of my more fragile and valuable books. As for the silverfish bait, could you maybe give me a heads up on which product you use. A quick google search for pyrethrum based baits only gave me a bunch of confusing results.
Why don’t the turn in flaps get glued? I’ve been binge watching your videos the past few weeks and really enjoying them. You are inspiring me to pick up a new hobby. Thank you! This will probably be my first project.
I'm not a paper expert, but I thought it was 10pt or 300gsm. But I just check a supplier catalogue and they had 240gsm material in their card section. DAS

No need to and would add a lot of moisture. Would also make it a 22 minute slipcase:) Happy binding! DAS
The measuring part is what makes the extra ten minutes.
Do slipcases like this protect books from oxidation, or aging?
Yes, very well. This is known as making a micro-climate for the book. The phase case is even better and I have a video on making these too.
What GSM would you recommend as a minimum for these covers? Your tutorials are so much appreciated!
The red one was a heavy paper, maybe 240gsm. I wouldn't go any lighter than that. The other is 12 point card.
All the best,
Darryn
Thumbs up.

@@DASBookbinding Thank you!
EDIT: deleted question re: width. You answered it in the slow demonstration part of the video. Cheers!
I can make one in 10 minutes but the book doesn’t fit.
Well it probably fits at least one book in the history of the world. You just have to find that one book.
Hello! I couldn't help but ask, but what is the diameter and kind of brush that you use for glue? Thank's in advance.
It's a German made brush I got from Hewits. It's about 25mm in diameter.
