      Lol. They have to see inside your ears. If the ear wax is too bad that they can’t, they won’t let you qualify. You can disqualified for a lot of little stupid things at MEPS.

    Hey y’all, just came back from MEPS so I’ll give you my expierence
    -3:00pm arrived at the hotel, sat in the lobby for 20 mins while the staff was taking calls pretty nice place
    -4:00pm met my roommate and we sat and talked for a few hours
    -8:00pm we heard the hotel dinner was pretty bad so we went and DoorDash Ed some McDonald’s, $60 for a meal that would usually cost $30. Gotta love it
    -9:30pm went to bed, barely slept the hotel blankets were hot and my anxiety was pumping, woke up at 12 and stayed up till they called us down
    -4:45pm had to report down to the lobby to get breakfast, ngl it was pretty damn good, homefries, bacon, eggs, muffins, juice, made me regret not trying out their dinner
    -5:50 went on the shuttle with around 45 other kids, age range around 18-23
    -6:05 finally arrived at the MEPS center. It was actually a pretty nice place. Lined up against a wall, everyone who was deploying next day and those who were not were separated into two diff lines
    -6:30ish made our way through security, if you smoke you should be able to bring along your vape, they don’t do bag checks (atleast where I was) and were mainly just searching for weapons
    -6:45 went to the control desk, gave them all my info like ssn, passport, don’t feel like explaining it’s listed what you have to bring. Told them what lunch I wanted and they gave me my name tag (always put it on the left upper portion of your chest)
    -7:00 waited in the lobby for the first group to get done with their presentation, basically just an overview of what will happen to the recruits that day (everyone says this but they will try and explain telling the truth is always most important and they’re there to make you pass, literally the exact opposite lol)
    -7:50 got done with our presentation and went down to medical which was another god damn 30 mins of waiting (there’s a lot of that at MEPS) met the doctor and we got our regs
    -8:30 I took a PICAT, some people are different and take the full ASVAB on the spot but atleast for the navy you take the PICAT atleast a month beforehand and then again, if your score dips too low you actually take the full ASVAB and luckily mine didn’t
    -9:00 rushed over to medical, got blood work, hearing test, sight test, urinalysis, the whole 9 yards (not listed in order)
    10-10:30ish met with the doctor to do the interview, asked me a whole sort of questions. Ever smoked cigarettes or any form of nicotine, ever smoked weed, do you take counseling, any medical injuries as a Chile, say no to ALL of them unless already written down on paper by your recruiter.
    -11:00 told to go into a room and strip to my underwear room had a lot of heaters since as of now it’s mid October, had to wait for 30 fucking minutes in my underwear to finally meet the doctor and wait for the other kids to get into the room
    -11:30 took my height, weight, measured my diameter. Ima yee the recruiter or your research told you about this part so imma skip it
    -11:45 did my physical stuff, duck walk is actually pretty easy and they only make you do like 3 steps before they just pass you along NOTE: if you fail anything on the physical it won’t disqualify you, it’ll just indicate some signs of underlying diseases but most doctors will let you slide if you mess up
    -12:30 got done with that and went down to have lunch, don’t be surprised if you’re alone as different kids will have different schedules, they let me have my phone but we’re on my ass about me only having 20 mins to eat or else they would “kill me” in a joking manner
    -12:45ish went down to the NAVY hiring center, for different branches you’ll go to your specified hiring center obv, had me fill out an 88 question survey while they checked my scores
    -1:00 called me into the office to go over my jobs, I had a pretty big list so I chose to be an Operational Specialist for the Navy (they let you take breaks mid interview to call parents or think about it so don’t feel forced to do a job they want you to)
    -1:45 officially signed up for my job, found out I was getting a 10k bonus (fuck yeah) so I didn’t mind that, got my shipping date and then went through a whole lot of paperwork
    -2:30 went back to the control room for more paperwork, dude was pretty chill and we were making fun of people who are going into reserves (don’t do it, bad choice)
    -3:00 finally swore in after standing at attention for 15 mins with 2 other kids (officer was late) that was an easy part just say what he says and fill in the blanks and you’re chillin
    -3:30 left with my designated drive, not sure how it is now but no parents are allowed to watch your swearing in part due to covid restrictions
    Overall it isn’t as bad as people think it is, they know you’re scared and this is all new to you so they explain everything in depth. You can ask them all sorts of questions and they’ll answer no problem although some might be impatient because you’re one of many. It was a pretty easy expierence just be mindful that these people are here to make you fail so have lots of self confidence in your job (if you’ve already decided) and your ability to lie to peoples faces. Other than that just be cool, make some friends, and enjoy an expierence 80% of the population will never have to go through. Have fun yall

    For those watching this now, YOU ARE SIGNING YEARS OF YOUR LIFE AWAY. If you want a specific job, DO NOT comply to putting down jobs you aren't comfortable with having for your contract duration. They will pressure you into doing that and your recruiter also will try to pressure you because they want the numbers rather than what makes you happy. Do what is best for you. You can tell your recruiter to come back when the job you want is available.

    • @JonnySmith-w6f
      @JonnySmith-w6f 5 місяців тому +30

      This is not how the process works. If you’re joining for a specific job, your recruiter is not going to waste their time with you. This is a job interview, you don’t get to demand anything. The Air Force will be fine with or without you.

    • @jamesphilip4562

      @MichaelCampbell-t8n 2 місяці тому +5

      This is completely incorrect and not how the process works. If you want a specific job, then go to school/training for that specific job and do that instead. A recruiter will not waste time on a job locked applicant. You can’t tell a recruiter that doing X job will make you “happy” when you’ve NEVER done X job in your entire life. There’s other opportunities like retraining or AFCOOL education benefits that allow you to serve or eventually obtain your dream job. DO NOT tell a recruiter to “come back when a job is available” 😂. You’ll find yourself having to a find a new recruiter, and another one…and another one.

    Edit:
    I PASSED! There were many ups and downs in my experience. First off, DONT wear yoga pants like JodywithaWhy recommends. I wore them and was told it wasn’t allowed; fortunately, the staff seemed to forget/not notice it that much and let me continue without changing. Remember to DRINK WATER; bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated. ALWAYS carry your paper work. Big hints: say NO to everything. You are perfect, make them believe it. Lastly, don’t drive off without telling your recruiter and triple checking everything is clear (long story).

    For the record, I couldn't pass the Depth Perception test. The test the Air Force uses is 60 years old. They gave me a different test and I passed. So there are waivers or alternative tests available. I was already an air traffic controller and was cross training to fly. So not only would I not have qualified to fly I also would have been disqualified from my current job. My point is WAIVERS are a thing.

    This guy is spot on with everything very detailed video very informative I just came back from MEPS about two weeks ago it was almost everything that was said in this video. Don’t give out any new information and everything that you told your recruiter and anything he asked you and you responded make sure you do the same in front of the chief medical officer. For some reason The people working for MEPS want to have any reason to disqualify you don’t give them any. It could be a very small question that you think oh OK it’s not a disqualifying question and then you say yes and then you get disqualified so don’t say yes to anything I’m just telling you now yes stands for your enlistment stops no stands for new opportunities. I have a lot of friends that were way more qualified than I am that couldn’t enlist because they start talking and then say something that they shouldn’t and then get disqualified don’t ask don’t tell don’t give out any new information just do everything your recruiter tells you to do he’s done this 1000 times he knows better than you. Just make sure to get a good nights sleep because you will be waking up around 330 4 o’clock to catch the bus and then everyone will go to a briefing and take an alcohol breathalyzer test and then they will split you up into groups to do a series of different tests the duck work isn’t as bad as everyone makes it it’s just one of those things you have to do stand in a room full of strangers almost naked with your underwear on for about 25 - 30 minutes at the most that’s probably the most annoying part of the test a lot of hurry up and wait and lots of paper work. I can’t speak for every MEPS, but they have a room where applicants can wait they have a game system they have bored games they also have a lunch around 11 12 o’clock I was given subway you will meet a lot of different applicants from different branches and you will make friends and listen to the stories it’s a good time takes the edge off. The people working at MEPS are very strict and hold that military attitude they will be very strict and stern and they will yell at you so just be ready for that. Just make sure to pay attention because they don’t like repeating themselves they want to make it as if you’re already in the military. Just do everything that’s asked pay attention and you will be fine. The reason I’m giving out so much information is because I went through this process three times, never thought I would actually pass and then when I did I was so grateful that I want to share some of the main components of the process with everyone if you have any questions feel free to contact me. I SHIP OUT FEBRUARY 22nd! Hoorah!!!

    It's been decades since I enlisted in the USAF (ASVAB didn't exist, AQE was the test). But I did go through MEPS, and what you went through was almost exact to what I experienced. I left for BMT directly after, on a contracted commercial (Braniff Airlines) flight from Des Moines Iowa direct to Lackland. My first time ever on an airplane. The next few days as a Rainbow changed my life. I retired from the USAF in 93. I still have vivid memories of my entrance and boot. I ended up as a Logistician planner, and a Master Sergeant. I'm glad I'm out, but I miss it, sometimes deeply because of the good friends I made, and the extraordinary experiences I had. Even now I wonder how this corn-fed country boy ever did all that.

    I just failed the depth perception test. My tips so you have a better chance than I did: Do not rush, even if the doctor is trying to rush you. Do not attempt to search for the circle based off color, gradient, size, whatever. You will want to focus on one spot and have your eyes do that one illusion where two images blend into one, I'm not sure what to call this. If you DO end up failing, it is not the end of the world. The test that MEPS uses is old and has an absurdly high fail rate, there are other means to get the job you want.

By the time I found out I’d failed it, I would have had to commission into one AFSC and then apply to cross-train to go to flight school. I wasn’t devoted to becoming a pilot, so it wasn’t too terrible for me.
      For anyone who IS seriously devoted to becoming a pilot, make sure you say you’re open to any aircrew position. If I’d done that, I had very good chances of getting a non-pilot aircrew slot. Things may be different, these days; but it can be a bit easier to apply for a flight training slot if you’re in the aviation community as something like a navigator, weapon systems operator, or air battle manager (like my friend who appealed the depth perception test did). Those communities seemed to be more willing to give up their people to become pilots while other specialties are loathe to lose a body for any avoidable reason.

    way different than when I went in USAF in mid 70's. if you had a pulse you got in. ASVAB score of under 20? no problem. I smoked the ASVAB on every test which stunned and jazzed my recruiter. I don't recall a whole lot of medical questions.

    His video is really helpful! A lot of information compacted together, so make sure to take notes and watch more than once.
    I just finished meps to enlist into Air Force as an e-3, but couldn’t swear in since my recruiter didn’t send in some documents yet.
    I got a 92 on asvab studying flashcards, doing practice questions and working them out (key part working them out.)
    Be obedient to all meps staff and REST WELL. You WILL wake up very early, and no coffee or anything to help you stay awake.
    Don’t swear in with a job if they offer you some if you don’t know what it is or even think you don’t want it! This is years of your life and you can always come back, especially if you know you got a good score and just aren’t for example an infantry type of person but would do better on a computer.

    Ok I just did Meps like 2 weeks ago and it was pretty easy. The only 2 things that where difficult for my was sleeping at the Hotel and having people watching me for everything. Luckily, I had a female nurse to do the physical, so nothing too awkward.
    The advice I’ll give is that try to sleep unlike me who pulled up an all nighter. The other thing is just to be comfortable for not knowing, if it’s not diagnosed by a doctor DONT SAY ANYTHING. Also just do what the people say, they are very jaded and don’t have time for Dummies.
    I’ll be a Refuel/Bomber Maintenance guy and will be leaving by June 15. Maybe earlier for that $8K we shall see. Keep on Flying!

    I told my recruiter I had anxiety but it wasn't until I was in the hotel room my recruiter called me and asked why I didn't mention my suicidal ideation. I didn't think it was related. I was 18, I didn't see it as a danger cause I didn't actually do it. When i got to the doctor, I was the only one pulled for a psych evaluation, and that dude, made me CRY. He basically made me believe I was faking that I don't have those thoughts anymore, I've never been cracked so bad like that, it was a traumatic experience, and after I did everything mentioned in this video, remember we were up since 4:30, I woke up at 3 cause I was anxious about falling asleep and couldn't go back to bed. I was put on a "waiver" for review, and 2 weeks later, I found out I was disqualified. My aunt was the one who released my medical records to my recruiter and I gave my signature, but she personally never knew I was being seen for that, and I thought since my recruiter had worked with me for almost a year, he had time to review my stuff, and would've asked about it way long ago before meps. I was being counseled the only reason I might be disqualified is cause of my weight, I lost it, and there you have it, my past came back to haunt me. I understand now, but since it happened to me, I know that was a turning point where I thought maybe I'm not okay. It's been 7 years, still here, still have bad days sometimes, but it hasn't happened again. I was very surprised I was the only one that day with mental health issues, I thought every teenager is depressed, I guess not.

      So is "quick ship" actually still a thing? And if so, do I still need to make a list or am I just given whatever job is available, based on my qualifications?
      Also, is there a better chance at shipping out sooner if I want to go open aptitude?

    • @Jodywithawhy
      @Jodywithawhy  4 роки тому

      So the way quick ship works, people are leaving every week right. Let’s say one of those people get hurt or in trouble and can’t leave, then their job becomes available. At that time all the people who are trying to quick ship and qualified will be notified, and expected to take the job (if they told their recruiter they’ll take anything). You really have no idea what will come your way, so you gotta be extra flexible.
      When you list an aptitude area it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll leave quicker, but potentially an aptitude could come available for a quick ship opportunity and you can take that. I hope that makes sense. Lol

    Just hearing all these new things that happen at MEPS I am not surprised because times change thru the years. I remember going to MEPS in 2000 and I never had to to do the computer knowledge test, personality test, and that blood test. The only thing I remember is just giving blood. Maybe I was told some of these things like don't use mouth wash, drink coffee, no sodas, etc. but I can't remember lol. As for the ear wax thing and getting disqualified or having to go back later if you get another chance at MEPS, that never happened to me in my personal situation. For my ears, while I was at MEPS, they looked in my ears and sent me to a ear, nose, throat doctor and had to clean out my ears because I had a bug in one of mine lol. I didn't know this but they got it out and I went back to MEPS to finish it up and after that I went back home. I love to watch these videos to see what has changed throughout the years. Oh yeah forgot about the change for wisdom teeth as well. If I remember, I thought I heard through a video that if you still have your wisdom teeth, they pull all of those before you do boot camp. Great video like always :).

I’m so afraid that if I take the asvab that I will just be looked down upon and if they do let me it won’t be a job that I am really interested in. I do have major interest though. When it comes to computer programming or anatomy the interest is off the charts.
    Should I just try the asvab and take a leap of faith ?

    • @Jodywithawhy
      @Jodywithawhy  4 роки тому +21

      This is totally normal. Everyone’s scared to make that leap anytime they’re about to do something they perceive as difficult. Anytime I put someone into the Air Force who wasn’t nervous, I thought they were the weird ones.
      But listen to me. Too many times people let major opportunities pass them by, because of their fears. We talk ourselves out of stuff before we ever start. DONT DO THAT. Even if you fail, at least you tried something that only 1% of America does. BUT.......what if you pass? What if your whole life changed for the better In the next 3-6 months? • @Jodywithawhy
      @Jodywithawhy  4 роки тому +2

      It’s common. But sometimes people who deal with this can’t get their blood pressure down, and open up a can of worms with the chief medical officer at MEPS.
      Also, be careful about using terms like anxiety if you’ve never been diagnosed with it. Maybe “nervous” would be more fitting.
      Last thing, I’ve seen people who couldn’t pee while at MEPS and they’ll make them wait in the waiting room until they can go. If you cannot go while at MEPS, then you’d have to go back to urinate. And you won’t qualify until you do. So it’s one of things you’re gonna have to figure out how to deal with, because there’s no way around it. I don’t know any tips, because most people I’ve talked to who deal with this, say it’s never fun. 🤷🏽‍♂️ If I had any advice I would say youtube ways to calm down in stressful moments.

    Not sure if you're still replying or not. Love your videos! I'm currently scheduled for a physical at MEPS, but after my medical review of my records, they have indicated that my packet will have to be sent to the surgeon general after my physical is completed to waive hardware in my clavicle from a fracture last march. I have documentation of a full recovery from pt and Dr discharge from over a year ago. No pain, full range of motion and strength. I have already been offered a position in the air force band following my audition in May, so I'm hoping this should be a non issue for the SG (I thought it would have been since I made a recovery but this is the military). I'm able to max out the air force pt requirements in each section already and have recently completed an ironman triathlon a couple weeks ago, so I'm definitely a fit individual. No other medical problems or issues. I don't know why I'm worried like I am, but my recruiter mentioned that it's always a toss up when stuff is sent to the SG.

To each their own but to me retirement isn't just about not having to work, it's about having the freedom to do whatever you might reasonably want, such as travel, buying things, enjoying life, etc. I don't think I could retire with less than $3m in income generating investments, maybe $2m at the very minimum. Lol. Being nervous is normal. Don’t sweat it. You’ll be fine. Just make sure you listen to the instructions when you get there, and everything will go smooth. Let us know when you make it through so we can congratulate you. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
