    My faith in Adam and Sarah is always rewarded by how much they pick up on the subtle moments of Haikyuu. I'm sure it would warm the heart of the author to know that two great athletes on the other side of the globe can relate so well to even his subtle nods to real sports dynamics (not to mention the big moments like the start of a tournament).
    It was especially great to see the coach in Adam get so hyped about Tsukishima's steps to buy into competitive sports.
    Also, Sarah feeling the same way about Kuroo's blocking advice was great. Just makes me want to see her watch her own first-time reactions some time down the line to see if she agrees with all her past analyses.

    That's the charm of Ushijima! His extreme bluntness is both innocently sincere AND incredibly tactless/borderline rude😆I find it incredibly endearing and it really cemented him as one of my faves. It's a fun characterization to add into the mix when you have characters like Oikawa and Tuskki who are rude on purpose 😅

    I think Kuro's statement about Lev's blocking is more applicable to their playstyle as Nekoma. Lev was supposed to limit the ball to a certain angle cause they know they can receive well.

  • @Quarkmire
    @Quarkmire 3 місяці тому +142

    Hinata and Kenma's dynamic is ELITE, I love it sm. They actually ENJOY each other's company and are best friends fr fr , spending most of their free time together . For both Kenma and Hinata this is a big deal. Kenma because he's introverted and picky, and Hinata because he's so extroverted that it's rare he actually deliberately CHOOSES a person to hang out with. Underscoring this friendship is the fact Hinata and Kenma also call each other by their first names which is so freaking adorable and special (and rare in Japan because Kenma is one year older!!) And bonus they text each other all the time!!!
    I also love the fact that they catalyse each other's development. Kenma loves volleyball as an intellectual strategic game, but Hinata's fast evolution and unpredictability help Kenma to see volleyball as fun. For Kenma to win against Hinata, he has to put aside his apathy and be fully emotionally invested in the game. On the other hand, Hinata lacks volleyball technique and game sense. For Hinata to win against Kenma, he has to move from his natural athleticism to deliberate strategic intelligence. They are rivals in the best way possible.
    Hinata is also really one of the ONLY people that brings out Kenma's rare, competitive, side that loves challenges. Remember Hinata's promise right at the beginning in S1? "I'll make you FEEL DESPERATE about victory!!!" This is endearing on so many levels. One, that Hinata cares so much about Kenma's feelings. Two, that Hinata is promising Kenma that he'll be a worthy challenger and outsmart Kenma in order to win. And three, that Hinata is fine with Kenma being the way he is, he accepts that Kenma usually doesn't feel strong emotions of victory and defeat (so unlike himself). In this episode, we see that Kenma FINALLY responds to Hinata's challenge in S1 (I want a match where there's a game over if you lose). It's beautiful to see the mutual respect they have for each other, and that Hinata's promise in S1 is finally being reciprocated.
    Their dynamic is unmatched. Despite being incredibly different, they match each other's energy off and on the court. It's a microcosm of how Nekoma and Karasuno are perfect rivals, the cat and the crow being greedy, omnivorous, and adaptable.

    • @xuapril32
      @xuapril32 3 місяці тому +5

      love everything you said, I just want to add though that I feel like most people call Kenma by his first name. I seem to remember all his teammates and coach just say Kenma, so I assume he doesn’t really care about the first/last name thing.

    • @laiofurious6433
      @laiofurious6433 3 місяці тому +5

      @@xuapril32 Kenma is like the baby of Nekoma, everything revolves around him, the team is the body and blood flowing, and Kenma is the brain, the one they protect. The relationship in Nekoma is kinda more familiar than the rest. But for him to accept and let Hinata, who's from a different school and is even a year younger than him, to call him by his first name, shows that Kenma has the same respect for Hinata, also calling him by his name (something that only Noya does because he took as his senpai) shows that he also considers Hinata not only a rival, but a dear friend.
      I don't know if you watched the movie or read the manga by now, so be aware and skip it if you don't want to be spoiled:
      Is kinda the same relationship that led Kenma to be best friends with Kuro. Both Kuro and Hinata see in Kenma how he is about volleyball in the same way, but respect it in a different form. While Kuro knows what Kenma dislikes, he tries to lead him doing what he likes, trying for him to enjoy playing the game as he wants. On the other side, Hinata sees that as a challenge, recognizing Kenma as his rival, but also wanting him to fully enjoy the game in a more exciting way (just like himself), something that even Kenma himself can't see happening, that is... When Hinata is not around.

    • @Quarkmire
      @Quarkmire 3 місяці тому +9

      @@xuapril32 ayyyy you're correct!! Best boi Kenma indeed told Hinata the first time they met that "he doesn't care for hierarchy and not to be formal!" but it still shows a huge amount of friendly affection between them that they casually call each other Shoyo and Kenma. In contrast, Kageyama always calls him "Kozume-san" to show respect both as a setter as well as a upperclassman.
      Sidenote - it's really apparent if you know Japanese just how polite, dutiful, and respectful Kageyama is lol. He always makes sure to use the "proper honorifics" no matter who he's speaking to (except Hinata). It's Hinata who's more the cheeky gremlin and switches between polite / READY TO THROW DOWN with literally anyone he meets even though he's the babie 1st year.
      so yeah, Kenma doesn't care about hierarchy, but it's not like he'll tell EVERYONE to call him by his given name. Just the people closest to him. Really cute. Hinata ofc being EXCELLENT at matching people's energy (look how different he acts with Kenma vs Aone vs Tanaka) is happy to be called Shoyo.

    The blonde hair "yamamoto" (and pre-Karasuno Tanaka) stereotype in anime is supposed to be for "delinquent" children who like to roughhouse/bully/fight, though often in anime the ones portrayed as such are really just loners and eccentric people who disapprove of the methods of the masses so they are voluntarily outcasts.

    I actually think, even more than the matches themselves, it's these in between episodes where your insights and experience really make things I couldn't have accessed, like details about mindsets and team dynamics, really click for me. This was such a great reaction from both of you!
    From a storytelling point of view, this is an incredible episode for how much it manages to pack in and the different ways it does that. There's the Tsukishima plot, which is probably the main arc of the episode, but there's the evolving team dynamic (Kageyama opening up to his teammates, Tsukishima and Hinata having a semi-serious conversation, Yachi gaining confidence in her new role), the contrast with Seijoh (Oikawa as someone who can work with anyone, and then almost immediately we're introduced to Mad Dog). And all the little ways in which the show gives us the sense of time passing and people getting better, through montages and calendars and the stats for the quick attack; even if we don't get to see those things in detail we know that everyone's really working towards this tournament. It's brilliantly handled--as Adam said towards the end, we got two months in one episode; yet it never feels rushed or heavy.
    edit: Also the second-greatest bathroom scene in the series (the best, if we're only counting the ones that have been animated so far)

    In an episode full of great quotes, "You think it's only obvious if you lose, don't you?" is one of my underrated faves of all time.
    Tsukki has... Just, so many built up layers of defence. He treats "it's just a club" like a mantra of self-denial, a way of warding off his own *investment*, because it's clearly there! He wants to win!
    But he's constructed this pessimistic, confirmation bias view where losing is "obvious", because 'they were taller', 'they'd been playing longer', 'they had a star player', but... It's like he only makes that calculation for the opponent? If they lose, it was obviously for those reasons. But he seems to refuse to take the same attitude to winning: "we won because of Nishinoya's amazing recieves", "we won because of our Ace's power serves", "we won because I read them for filth and shut down their shots". There's nothing "obvious" in victory. And I think this is because Tsukki kind of quietly expects these things might fail to live up to his faith in them if he puts that in? He's refusing to put his trust and his investment in.
    I like seeing Tsukki's brother calling him on that pessimistic attitude. And the way being read like that irks him and pushes him to get more invested, lol.

    I think what Kuro meant is to have your arms close enough that the ball will not go through the middle, when you go back you can see how spread Lev's arm is and the ball the just go between Levs arms making. Also it makes it difficult for the receivers to clearly see where the ball is going.

The defender has to dive and can't get the ball. Nekoma is a team that wants to feed the ball to its defenders so when Lev suddenly opens the straight on a 2 person block there is no defender ready. I forgot the tip on blocking from last season but unfortunetly I wont be able to apply the spread block as on most days my hands dont go over the net while playing beach😅 maybe ill apply it after my jump training!

    as someone who doesn't play volleyball, my thoughts about Lev's blocking, it's more like Kuroo wants Lev to get the basics down since he's a beginner. and it wasn't a solo block. We don't know if its 2 or 3 person block, since you can see kenma beside Lev, but the screen cuts off. so i guess the context matters too xD
    In my own sport in school as well, I've always been scolded for not doing the basics right, only then I could experiment with my own style of playing.
    Also Adam saying a lot of people having the 'i'm going to lose' mentality. It's true. I'm like that too. It's not that I didn't practice enough, its more like seeing what i've done in practice and seeing the opponent's skill, as someone who relates to tsukki and have been told i'm tsukki without a yamaguchi to get my motivation back, its hard to think you can do any better. Always been losing and losing is what i'll always do. that's that kind of mentality.

    I really like Hinata's attitude this episode: the "we have to beat everyone anyways." I'm not much of an athlete anymore presently, but have had some successes in the past. Towards being competitive, I was competitive in the mindset of "ok lets see how far my skills take me"; I never really thought of ever getting to that top spot of being the best, the pinnacle. I think a lot of competitive athletes have thought like me in those limiting ways, or I'd like to think so. So I admire the ambition and think it's a useful tool

I think it stems from 2 things. 1 the drive to get scholarships as school as post secondary is so expensive. 2 parents who just want their kids to win now and make that the focus. I think it's hard for parents to have perspective on their kids especially if they did not play high level sports. In other countries you are tied to a club and see the professionals training near by and have aspirations. If you are good enough you get invited out to practice.

Hinata mentions that "the bathroom is where all the strong players show up" and in the epilogue, past all the main story and when there is a separate story, you see two really strong teams play each other and many of those players are originally considered top level from the main story, and many of them end up showing up around the teams bathrooms, like 80% of the main player from both teams are there.

    I totally take Sarah's side on how to block 1on1. She is a professional Volleyball player after all, an Olympian at that. I think she's also heavily focused on hard-blocking a ball (a monster block). In Beach Volleyball when you block you aren't really trying to guide the ball somewhere else. What you are trying to do is stuff the block right then and there - end the play. With only 2 players on your side of the court, that's what you're trying to do. So for 1on1 blocking I totally get it that you would spread your hand and cover a lot of space with your block. You are using your experience (understanding vision, understand what most people see when they spike, understanding HOW most people spike, the technique and the angles), and you're trying to outplay the spiker and end the play. You want to hard block.
    However, in regular Indoor Volleyball where you're building a block-wall of 2 or 3 players, most coaches would teach to not have any gaps in the wall. So there you have 2 or 3 blockers with their hands straight up over their heads; That's how you get a closed wall, and your other team members can receive around you. In that particular scenario, where you have a 2-man block, or 3-man block, I just can't imagine all 3 blockers having their hands apart to "take up space". That would just be a wall with 3 holes over each of the blockers' heads to spike through.
    So in principle, 1on1 (either Beach Volleyball, or Indoor Volleyball) you have your hands apart and try to take up space as Sarah said; You are trying to stuff block 1on1.
    If you're playing 6on6 though, and you want to guide the ball, or wall off sections of the court with your blockers, you don't want gaps in the wall at all, so you have to adjust accordingly, which means several blockers, hands over the heads, close together, no gaps. You aren't necessarily trying to stuff block. It's a multi-purpose wall. At least that's how I understand it.
    That's only theory though. Even when you watch Indoor Volleyball international games, and Olympic games, you see different block techniques. Some spread their hands, some don't, sometimes they have holes in the wall and the ball gets through (as expected), but sometimes they block the ball precisely because they spread their hands while being part of the wall (so in theory you'd think that was bad, the wall had a gap or multiple gaps, but they achieved the block...because they were watching the ball and adjusted I suppose?). I think ultimately it all comes down to experience and watching the ball mid-play, and your opponents mid-play, to make a good decision on what block to use.

    • @VladimirMizich
      @VladimirMizich 3 місяці тому

      I watched several matches of the Japanese national team in the VNL over the last couple of days, and I noticed their block technique to be exactly what I said in my post above. One on one they spread their hands to occupy more space and try to stuff block the ball. But if they block with a wall (2 or 3 blockers lined up), they have their hands together. Just thought I'll add this here to my original comment.

    Fun Fact: The nickname "Mad Dog" that Oikawa came up with for Kyotani Kentaro (the new guy) does not actually mean "Mad Dog". It's just the first syllable of his first and last name combined together; "Kyo-Ken Chan" is derived by Kyo (Kyotani) and Ken (Kentaro). There wasn't any good way to localize it, so "Mad Dog" was brought up to make it sound cooler and meaner.

      京谷賢太郎 (Kyoutani Kentarou) → 京賢 (Kyou-Ken) → 狂犬 (kyouken) → mad dog

    i would say Sarah's take on the blocking part is fair and right. but i would say it doesn't work on every hitter tho. like Bokuto it wouldn't work because i think he is the type of player that would rather try and power thru a block most of the time. i think for most hitters it would be a fair bet to do it Sarah's way but you should read the opponent first.

    For a seeded team that wins often, a championship team will often exude more individuality and pride, right? Treating victory as ordinary as eating breakfast will also put a lot of pressure on the opponent.😅What I want to say is that this kind of emotional reaction is also an issue for coaches, right? Just like... maintaining the confidence that a championship team should have, or reminding them in a timely manner: Hey! You shouldn't underestimate your opponent. Just like every player with a distinctive personality in the animation, you should motivate or calm him down. This is related to "rhythm", isn't it? Whether it’s a team or an individual

      I'm not sure I fully understood your comment, but yes I agree that winning breeds expectation of winning. Every team strives to create a winning culture, and that is both visible with players and invisible (internal believe). In terms of coaches, my personal opinion is that it isn't about you. You should not react emotionally, you should have a beat on what is happening and give your team and players what they need, that is the most important. Somethings that is hyping them up, sometimes it's being hard on them and bringing them back into focus.

      I would say the more confident you are with your skills the more you are able to focus on your opponents earlier. So for example you say you only see the blockers hands, I would guess that going into your approach you are very focused on your setting and the ball making sure that you are going to where the ball is set. This means you can only focus on the blocker later in your approach. The higher level you are the less you have to watch the ball. Your setters are good enough that you expect the ball to be in a certain place, you have the capacity to pick up more information on your approach (hence Sarah talking about seeing the body of the blocker)

      @@3rielinawa814 Every player is a different, they see and process things differently. But generally you are trying to gather as much information as possible so you can make a good decision on where to hit the ball. I generally talk about eye progressions so for example (in this case I will talk as an outside), I start my approach and look where the blockers are. Is the outside blocker lined up to take my line or my cross court. This gives me a starting point. I then might take a peek at were the libero is standing or the player in 6. Where they go will also tell me what how they are trying to defend me. Then I come back to the ball before I hit and I can probably see the blockers hands at this point. It all happens very quickly but because you have done it so many times as you see things your brain recognizes patterns and you know where to swing. The preparation that goes into playing against an opponent also helps. For example if you see the 6 defender slide into 5 maybe you have seen on video that the block always takes line so you are just looking for 1 or 2 things to give you an advantage.
