A fun alternative to maimai is to go to your local laundromat and wash your clothes. You can opt out of social interaction, hit the sides of the dryer, and save money! And you also stink. Please wash your clothes.
Here’s my tried and true solution: play pop’n music! Nobody ever plays it so there’s never a queue and you never have to socialise with other pop’n music players because there are none!
I've been playing rhythm games since 2003 and have met most of my friends through the arcade. I'm one of the founding members of a local 300+ member rhythm game community. We have monthly meetups and are always welcoming new members. You make a lot of good points, especially the one about being a high ranking player and welcoming newbies it's very true a lot of people are intimidated by the game after watching high level gameplay, so I always make a point to encourage them to play and let them know that nobody is going to judge them. We all started out on lower levels. The biggest key is just striking up a conversation with somebody and waiting in queue is typically the best time.
the callout from this video that is the saving money section hurts my soul i did not ask to be reminded how instead of thinking in dollars i think in "how many plays will this cost me" Melb scene is brutal cause southland also doesn't do double dollars ;-;-;-;-;-; (at least we get updates first)
well we still have dd in melbourne because of timezone and kingpin (kp is prob best for online loads tho since they do both a sign up bonus if $1 for 21 and right now an easter flash sale of 100 for 250
My local scene has a whole-ass Discord server for both of the major rhythm game arcades and also the other two or three arcades in the region running Pump It Up Phoenix. Makes socialization a breeze; everyone knows one another because we're all always in touch via the server. Both of the major two arcades are right by metro stations too, which makes them super easy to reach. I am not too proud to admit one of the reasons why I continue to take classes is so that I get free transit via my U-Pass. Not only that, but on the way home on the metro is actually a Costco, so if I get hungry, I usually just leave, get off at that stop, and get a $1.50 hot dog (that's 3/4 of a play in local currency; after tax, closer to 1 play.)
Fym Maimai players don’t communicate, we got the best language of all! Aggressively pointing at the other person until one person breaks for first song pick.
They tell me "You choose first" and my introvert self went and pointed at their screen and nodded, and kept pointing until they get the idea that I let them choose first
1:39 Korean here. There are quite a number of arcades (and a lot of serious, dedicated players as well) in here, and solo-queueing is a frequent thing around here. The difference here from other countries is that you don't really wait in line for your turn. Instead, there's usually something like this board thingy where people place their cards/coins/credits in line, which practically acts as a queue. It's very similar to how in retro arcades you used to put your coin at the corner of the cabinet before you wait in line, but minus the waiting in line. Less need for socialization for me!
For me, the purpose I play this game is half socialization. I mean, we spend lots of time and of course lots of money on this game. I don’t want to limit it just to a game, I wanna it to be a part of my life. Use it to build a strong friendship with others, then finally it will help my career or even my life. That’s why I really enjoy play maimai in Australia.
Arcades here usually use a plastic tray, on which some number of cards can be placed. You're supposed to keep track of where in the queue your card is, and when there's nothing in front of your card in the queue and nobody's currently playing, that means it's your turn. *Technically* someone could cut in, ignoring the queue entirely. This is frowned upon arcade players here in Korea. This usually happens when the person who cuts in is a complete newbie, or just some horrible person. About stealing, the queue is often placed somewhere close to the player/cabinet, and it's not really easy to just yoink something off a tray when someone's in front of it. In this case, it is considered mannerless to place your card while someone else is already playing, because you would disrupt the player in the process. (doing it while not in a chart, for example, while selecting a song, is completely allowed BTW.) There are also occasions where this is not the case, but for those cases, usually the queue is somewhere that's easily spottable by the arcade managers. Even if you *did* get to steal a card, people would usually just get a new card from the counter (5000 KRW or about 4 USD) and just transfer their data on the new card, rendering the stolen card useless.
I need this for all the rhythm games I've been playing. I even fell in love with one of the characters from pjsk- Send help guys, I don't have a life anymore
In China, most players automaticly queue and play with stranger since everyone want to save money Also, in many cases, people can hav fun together(including the audience who is queuing) even they are strangers, like watching a 16000 master getting high score and cheer together (I experienced that great maimai atmosphere when Im traveling in Shanghai
Hello I am Maimai Indonesian Player and this is my activity on maimai day: 1. Buy Breakfast and Lunch 2. I Bought Drink from home which is some kind of water bottle mass product 3. Go to the mall with public transportation 4. i always go to mall before mall opens, so i depart from home like 8:00 - 8.30 AM and reach the mall in 30 minutes, because the mall open at 10:00 AM, i just wasting my time waiting in starb*cks store. 5. when the mall open, i just straight to arcade just to farming / grind my song chart which is Maimai, enjoy solo and duo with random (if there are people want to play). Each credit / one time play is (Rp 14000 / 0.85 USD).
Really fun video. I've really been enjoying your content recently, keep it up. Might have to try out maimai sometime if I can find a cabinet near me. Also fun seeing moondrop iems mentioned, my audiophile friend recommended them to me and I've been addicted to them for years now lol.
@@N3bulAura id go for the chu 2 if you are on a budget, they are only 20 usd and sound amazing. you can get the original chu (also 20 usd) if you dont mind a non-detachable cable, as these come with their silicon spring tip eartips, which are the best eartips ive found personally (and they are normally like 10 usd on their own). if you want to spend more i'd go for the aria 2, they are like 90 usd. other than that they isnt really anything worth buying unless you are a hardcore audiophile willing to drop 200-1000+ usd. as a bonus i will say that i recently picked up the moondrop space travel for 25 usd and im really enjoying them. they are a wireless iem that sound comparable to airpods pro sound quility wise. surprisingly they have decent touch controls and decent anc/passthough. only downside is the battery life which i think is like 4ish hours per earphone and 12 hours more in the case. not really a problem for me though. also they have anime girl sound effects for the voice prompts lol. honestly the perfect purchase for a beater pair of headphones. only other thing i'd add is that moondrop's quality control is not the best. i've ordered like 6 iems and ive only had issues with one pair. you can always return them though. im lowkey passionate about this company if you cant tell lol.
@@N3bulAura I already typed a comment earlier but it seems it didnt work? so ig im typing it all out again lol. for 20 usd go with chu 2 or original chu: these are amazing, chu 2 come with detachable cable, while the original come with my personal favorite ear tips (silicon spring tips, which are like 10 usd if bought on there own irrc) but dont have a detachable cable. these have been dominant in the 20 usd iem market and still are. for 90 usd go with aria 2: these are a solid choice in the price range. there are plenty of alternative options in this price range from different companies though, as these arent nearly as dominant as the chu. but like i said these are still a solid choice. this is really the max id recommend the average person spend on iems, but they have some crazy iems in the 100-1000 usd range if you happen to be mr money bags lol. for wireless earbuds that are 25 usd go with space travel: i got these recently and they have been great. sound quality is comparable to airpods/airpods pro. only downside is that the battery life is 4 hours per earphone and the case holds 12 hours, but it really isnt an issue for me. and as a bonus (or not, if you're normal) all the voice prompts are in an anime girl voice. other than that moondrops quality control isnt the best, ive had a issue with 1 out of my 6 orders. but you can always return them if they arrive broken/you dont like them. i havent looked much into the 30-70 usd price range, but i find that many reviewers just recommend you get chu or chu 2 if you are looking in the price range of 50 usd and under.
Ok so I’m glad this video exists because I play DDR and one of my goals is to make friends, in person and online, but it just seems so difficult for me to do so. One time someone blocked me on Discord after I asked her if she plays DDR in Pennsylvania. Seriously, I’m not even joking 😂
1:29 hello it me also this video is just too accurate, right down to the moondrop iems lmaoooo i think what made socializing a bit easier for me is that as soon as i started playing i went to find a local maimai group online. with that i could feel less shy with interacting bcs i may have already seen (and talked to) them online. though this doesn't change the fact that i'm quiet irl and can't approach people easily
a light take but the "boy and girl together = dating" trope is so stupid ngl. this happens a lot in vtubers like hololive (mostly inside hololive bc male fans want to collab with their favorites instead of the girls collabing with their... uhh... *COWORKERS??* (bc hololive also have a male group called holostars and its underrated bc ew males eugh)) like you can mistake a boy and girl "couple" because who knows theyre actually related and if they were dating as relatives then that means they pull an alabama? which is _very_ unlikely people think that one heterosexual partners are lovers bc they keep thinking straight when they dont know about queer people existing like its just so random to assume that boy girl interactions = love couple this is real world guys, wake up from your dreams
my go to arcade rhythm game is Dancerush Stardom. it took a while before i was comfortable playing without caring how i look around people doing so. but when i saw people playing on the machine for the first time so the anxiety spiked up for me, then someone asked if all of us could do a train on the machine. "fuk it we ball" mentality kicked in and it was the most fun ive had with other people in a rhythm game scenario
2:50 That’s me on P2, wasn’t necessarily clapping him for the nice score (don’t get me wrong, it is), but I was clapping because he just beat me to win the tournament in the finals match 😅 But I will say for socialising, just let the other player pick 2 songs while you pick 2 of your own, and you don’t need to compliment them either if it feels awkward, just being courteous and having basic etiquette is good enough imo. Eventually you make friends from knowing each others’ shared interests and hobbies. 🙏
My local arcade has a little rack to put your card or anything (and I do mean anything, I have seen everything from trading cards to tesco clubcards) to mark your place in the queue. I guess this leads to most social interaction being "Whose card is this?" and waving around the card next in line to the general Maimai audience. I will say though just be inviting if anyone seems interested i.e watching, maybe while holding tokens or a card etc. No reason to gatekeep the funny washing machine and how I got hooked on Maimai is when a guy who frequents my local noticed me watching and showed me how the queue works and such and now a place I went to for fighting game stuff has become my frequent washing machine rhythm game hang out.
Just a random note about the Philippines - Our arcade gives deals for higher crediting so while the listed price is often about ₱40, the biggest deal makes it ₱27 per game instead!
Unless you're in Baguio. >Their rates are P6/token instead of P5. >There's the P300 for 100 tokens promo for most branches. They have the same promo in Baguio, but for P500. >You have tokens from different branches? Tough luck, they use different coins.
New maimai player here, I only have been playing for a week! Thanks for the tips! New mall recently opened near here with two arcades both with maimai DX. Had my first social interaction with one of them pro players and they asked if we could play together. It was a pleasant experience.
Maimai does not hit my bank account as hard as i expected (even though i have spent over 3 grand on the game) and tbh most of the socialising cases are pretty prevalent i was just lucky i had people supporting me at the start at a cab with 8+ queues back in the day
pro maimai ph player theres a bunch around lmao, like sm baguio, podium, rockwell/powerplant, whichever u prefer to call it, or uh... a lot of places with powerstation/quantum rlly
I started going to the arcade several times this week and I go there very early so I don't have to wait for my turn cause there's a lot of people playing Wangan Midnight Maximum tune 6. I'm happy because I just made friends with new strangers (they are so welcoming). Its nice to talk to them, and I'm a new player there so they also teach me about the game. There's this cute guy I'm keeping an eye with... we talked every time we see each other in the arcade. Also we have a really good chemistry, you know what I mean, Haha!! I wish we could talk again more :)) This one is interesting because he was the one who approached me when I was just starting the game. Also the editing in this video is so good
Very informative! I do have a job and I do competitive rhythm gaming in my free time, funny enough before rhythm gaming i started music and I still am a musician playing for a professional brass band, but yeah This video is really informative and helps! Edit: about socializing, i try to not do it as much now cause ive gotten a bit og backlash for my hyper energy on it (im autistic, adhd, ocd, anxiety, possible schizo) so ive been learning a lot of stuff with my therapist for this
Man your drawing is god tier❤ Stuff you said about arcade in china is false tho, there is a lot cabs but there are also so much more players. it's only those japanese players and they are completely anti social so they would go the effort to solo queue even if there are 10 people waiting and sega has to design game mechanic like pair playing missions and even then they still are solo queuing
I did talk to someone from china who complained about chinese players acoiding social interaction just how they do it in japan. Maybe it was based on experience or even certain provinces The japanese part is still pretty sad lol
I feel like in the states we dont have these issues, but it could be that i primary play dance games versus hand games Like im not an extraverted person in general, but I feel in the case for arcade socializing, even as a new player beginning to play Pump and looking up to experienced players it never felt that deep, like just have fun and talk
One of the few interactions I had from an arcade was just me complementing someone doing master levels. I'm new to the game and seeing someone in their element. They know they're good at the game, but they didn't see the outstanding performance I just saw.
wait... maimai machines exist in australia? dang... lucky in brazil we have pump it up, occasional DDR and (from way too much research) 3 taiko machines yes, in the entire country (that are avaliable to play)
i wish there were more active arcades close by!! I'm in Canada and there's a one project diva machine at the small local arcade and it's always empty!! I'm probably the only person that uses that machine!! hopefully there's a cooler arcade closer to the city cause I would love to make more arcade going friends instead of playing the extreme level songs just to feel something lmao
I literally work at a franchise shop inside of the shopping mall where the arcade is lol Everyone else is resting, eating during breaks, meanwhile me: **welcome to maimai**
For me, the only issue when trying to talk to people in the arcade is that it is loud as heck. Whenever I talk to my friend, or anyone for the matter, I have to either yell or I have to speak directly into their ear. But I do often make eye contact with the other player. It’s kinda necessary, since it’s customary to determine who goes first in choosing the song (although it is typically the younger person).
1:37 Chinese player here. While there're 1400+ arcades in China having maimai DX (and growing), it's still far from satisfying everyone: maimai DX is soo expensive and so hard to buy (WAHLAP as the CN server reseller, selling a maimai DX at 88000 CNY, or 12000+ USD, and require the arcade owner to buy other stuff and made a 500,000 CNY order first before being able to purchase a maimai DX), so normal arcade have only 1 maimai DX, 2 would be rare and 3+ would be the arcade paradise in China. And considering that the 1400+ arcades are spread across whole China, even in large city, it's still too less maimai DX to satisfy all the players from high school and university: one of the arcades I often go (because there're chunithm and usually it's not many people) will have 4~5 pairs people waiting in the queue for maimai, people even have a whiteboard there to keep record on who's in the queue and who's next So solo queuing is also rather rare in China when there're multiple players waiting: - it would be considered impolite / rude to keep others waiting extra long for only your needs, or sometimes getting criticized in local chat group - it's super rare to encounter player who is social awkward, (I think I can only remember 1 player but she has a partner to play with (I had to solo-playing as the other 2 girls don't want to rotate...)) - but yes there're some times when top tier player (rating >16000) want to farm something and playing over and over again and they'll ask others to approve for solo queuing, but only when there're 3~5 people. - Also if you do need some time practicing over and over, arcade usually opens at 10AM and closes at 10PM, most player will come after lunch around 1:30 PM, and leaves after a short period after dinner around 8 PM, so either wake up early, be the first player and enjoy your 3 hours soloing in the morning, or go to the arcade super late, stick at the maimai until staff asks you to leave. As for the money spend on playing maimai: Usually arcade will take 6 coins for each round of play, But for how much a coin worth, that vary from arcade to arcade, and vary from package to package. Around 2018 ~ 2020, it's usually 1 CNY for 1 coin, and a package will provide little discount like 200 CNY for 250 coins, so a round of maimai would cost 5 ~ 6 CNY (~100 JPY) Recently, starting 2023, new arcades start a price war, they are selling their package in a surprisingly low price, 300 CNY for 1000 coins (0.3CNY per coin) or 1000 CNY for 4000 coins(0.25 CNY per coin), a round of maimai will only cost 1.5 ~ 1.8 CNY, 1/3 of the initial price. It's sooo cheap that many players go to new arcades now. In response to the price war old arcades are now lowering their price too. (Personally I prefer to go to one of the old arcades, they have fewer people, which means instead of waiting 3~4 pairs of player, usually I only have to wait 1 other pair before it's my turn, or sometimes after 6PM, I can start farming)
i usually dont get to go to the arcade because where i live theres literally none but when i went back to my hometown i was playing (im not that good when u can only play twice a year lol) and this 10 year old kid asked me if i wanted to play with him. absolutely decimated me tho but it was so cute and wholesome 😭
Demm I guess we singaporeans have it lucky here... Some arcades are $0.60 sgd per game, and these arcades have >5 cabs each so less waiting time. But sometimes it gets so crouded that we cant physically fit LOL :p
No good arcade with rhythm games near me but interesting to hear what it would be like. at anime con it’s super chill since most people are new and I had fun inviting random people in
3:35 I spoke to this really nice guy at an arcade last week because he was going crazy on the DDR machine, and I just immediately left after 10 seconds of conversation (out of fear) and needless to say I am regretting... Could've became friends...😞
@@SaowAngel I do recognise the Maimai arcade that was shown from the city but I only went there once for a convention because I live further south of that area. 👁👁️
I'm the opposite of most other people. Even though I'm quite antisocial, I do a flip flop and become overly social when I'm at the arcade. I cheer players on. And if they're alone, I'll see if they're willing to have me playing like a maniac beside them. The hardest thing is knowing whose turn it is next, because people, especially casuals, tend not to wait close by. I wish I could build some kind of queue system. Maybe I could hang a sign on the bar that says, "Hey, if you want to play next, make yourself known". Luckily, money is not the limiting factor for me. Fear of going outside is what holds me back the most from playing at the arcade. I could get a really nice arcade replica pad. But dang it, I do yearn for some kind of social experience. It would be gratifying to show others my skills, (Or embarrassment, to be more honest). I want to create an interesting experience for everyone.
damn this video is too real, i too quantify all my purchases in how many games of maimai it's worth and 5:06 is me and my bf lmfao we just can't help it (i'm pretty sure i've passed his rating since i moved next to the arcade though). we did the love you utage kiss chart too of course
Hey, I've been planning to move to Australia in the far future whenever I can for many reasons, sort of sucks how it's more expensive there but oh well, I suppose I'll deal with it. Really nice to know how it all is there, certainly didn't expect arcade rhythm games to be so popular to the point you have to take turns. Good to have the warning about costs, too, I'd think it's not that much but I suppose I'll have to actually be mindful of playing. Mainly wanted to play SDVX, but I suppose KSM will work for now and even in that future for just playing at home for fun like that. I'm really looking forward to playing arcade rhythm games in general actually, as in our country we have almost none of them, aside of Pump It Up, I guess that it'll only let me practice some games first on clones like, again, KSM for SDVX Also hey, another light theme Discord user, very glad to see someone else using it
Because of maimai I get to do some walking to get to my local arcade and became acquainted with some players there. Without it I doubt I would have left my room to socialize outside of school.
I went to the arcade for like 2 weeks and met like 4 or 5 people, even went to eat with some of them ! Feels good when you dont have many friends ! Dont have their contact tho, i just go to the arcade and maybe one of them will be here😂
I play rhythm games nearly for 4 years now, A variety of it! Osu!Mania, Quaver, Vivid/Stasis (Quite new), Phigros, Cytus 2, Arcaea, Chunithm, and SVDX. Most quit because of some reasons but always wanting to get back. I don't play arcade rhythm games tho because as said, very expensive. At least there's like 5 rhythm games I play that's free yet also exhausting. About on the Rizz part of the video. Fuck that! Girls still want 6 ft guys that might be doing drugs or hood shit. But still good advice bro on socializing
3:31 I felt overwhelmed to the point watching watching more experienced players is more entertaining then actually trying the game itself- Update : Finally got the courage to actually play the game with other players, man they're surprisingly welcoming, thought some are hard to approach.... But eh atleast I'm having fun
4:30 is where I realized how damn lonely and anti-social I look when there are people playing together and they're like so close and I'm that one solo player still playing Vocaloid songs
This is why I play mobile games too. When I'm feeling very introverted, I just stay at home instead and take out my phone for pjsk or computer for rhythm+. Also, F2P
Reasom people use moondrop because moondrop earphones are just good earphones and have a product for almost every price range (I love my moondrop blessing 3 they sound so fucming good)
2:03 Some moondrop models have very good value for both under 100 and few hundred dollars price range, so that's probably why. Not sure how good the isolation is compared to Etymotic ER4 though. Great video. I remember getting into it during 2019 - 2020 and the best value arcade had 1 game credit for ~$0.66 SGD from Mondays - Thursdays. $3.20 AUD is ridiculous, is it because its mostly timezone there? I might get back into it if I go outside again...
1:36 it's actually also a thing in vietnam (or at my local arcade at least). There are only 2 maimai cabs but there is a queueing board where you can write your name to queue. When you wanna do solo queueing, you just need to write [your name] (solo).
socializing is so scary that i only play maimai if only there's one person playing it. i also find that the best time to play maimai is the time before i go to school (around 11am), cuz most ppl that play there are students and they r probably at school morning schedule (6am - 2pm) 😁 (i am in afternoon schedule (12pm - 6pm)) also, the arcade is just near to the school i attend to.
Personally, I'd ask if there's a queue first, usually, that's an icebreaker enough and you ask after what songs people like to play, and if you're paired with someone by count you can ask if the queue is by pairs, or not and if you are paired, maybe ask what songs do they tend to play too. Saving for money... Just me, but when I went to a near-hiatus to save for a need, I realized how much I spent on maimai... Could've bought a game priced locally at 30$ today but nah... Here's my guide if you're in the Philippines (wow) since I am (and I'm desperate to rid myself of it): Most people are more than happy to accommodate new players, and if you are a complete beginner, there likely is one person who eases you into both the game and the local community. (I was introduced by two people, but a certain 15k player in my location was the one who really eased me in. I owe them a lot.) Be sure to ask about the queue, since the chance of players wanting to play in sync is usually higher than wanting to solo - often reserved for the hard grind. (Not to mention for DX cabs, a single credit costs a lot already if you base your income in our country, and getting to play 4 instead of 3 songs is already worth enough to play with someone else.) Players tend to be responsive towards the "any song suggestions" question and usually give you one of three things - a song they like to play, a song they think will match your skill level, or a troll pick like ones from the PANDORA BOXXX. All we do is done in good faith. Some branches have a dedicated queue list - be sure to check. And while at it, be sure to ask about anything you might need to know. Oh, and please, no PDA. It's fine to be and show you're in a relationship, just don't rub it in others' faces.
As someone who usually goes to arcade alone to play maimai, and just a casual player (lv 10 max), I somehow always meet a random sweaty gamer and get intimidated when playing with them lol (unless if they play with touch only)
60% of my allowance goes to maimai and the other 40% are for random shits (food, parking, petrol) and most of the time no savings at all. Kinda ironic since Im an accounting student.
Oh yeah some other things I learn at the local arcade, make sure you notify people around you that you are queing one specific cab. If you decide to take takeouts and eat the the arcade (which I do sometimes), please eat properly and dont trash out the floor. If you are selecting a song, please at least consider the other player wellbeing even though you both paid to play, it really sucks when you got spammed with a certain new lvl 15 song all the time or maybe the other player have beef with a certain song because of goofy charting.
I can relate to this 100% of the time lol. I am a relatively new maimai player, I've been getting into the game for ~5 months now, and at the first day going to the arcade I felt so awkward since, obviously I knew nothing about the game as well as anybody there. But then, in my school, coincidentally a guy who plays maimai for quite a long time happens to get into the same English class as I do, and he is the reason I basically got into the game. What felt like a very awkward gesture to do became a comfortable thing everytime I go to the place now since he said to me to just walk up and write my nickname on the queuing board and just interact with a lot of people in the community to make more friends. Of course there are times I respect a person's privacy by just simply asking them to let myself play with (since there are only 2 cabs at the place) and that was all the experience I had to deal with for the past when playing maimai lol
The only rhythm game arcade cabinets near me are all PIU, which isn't bad, but I wish we had access to sound voltex or maimai or taiko. Doesn't help that the closest PIU cabinet is an hour away by public transport :/
I don't have access to maimai so I just suffer 😭 Discovered chrono circle which at least scratches some of the maimai itch, but Wacca is my favorite currently that I have access to (I just wish it had more songs)
Actually, in China, most arcades only include 1 maimai machine, 2 is rare, and any number greater than that is obscure. In my city, there is a Round 1, but it takes 2 hours to even get there, so I usually head to the nearer arcade even though it only has 1 maimai machine.
i live in singapore and im too scared to play maimai ever since i saw the washing machine cabinet like 5 years ago. im now a wangan midnight player who wishes he spent his money on maimai instead, and still have no guts to try the game myself
bugis paco funworld, but i go just to play wangan once a few months because i have no friends and im too scared to touch the washing machine cabinet@@yuuka11
A fun alternative to maimai is to go to your local laundromat and wash your clothes. You can opt out of social interaction, hit the sides of the dryer, and save money! And you also stink. Please wash your clothes.

We all started out on lower levels.
The biggest key is just striking up a conversation with somebody and waiting in queue is typically the best time.
a simple "hello" usually gets you in the circle most of the time

My local scene has a whole-ass Discord server for both of the major rhythm game arcades and also the other two or three arcades in the region running Pump It Up Phoenix. Makes socialization a breeze; everyone knows one another because we're all always in touch via the server.
Both of the major two arcades are right by metro stations too, which makes them super easy to reach. I am not too proud to admit one of the reasons why I continue to take classes is so that I get free transit via my U-Pass.
Not only that, but on the way home on the metro is actually a Costco, so if I get hungry, I usually just leave, get off at that stop, and get a $1.50 hot dog (that's 3/4 of a play in local currency; after tax, closer to 1 play.)
damn that's the life
Fym Maimai players don’t communicate, we got the best language of all! Aggressively pointing at the other person until one person breaks for first song pick.
They tell me "You choose first" and my introvert self went and pointed at their screen and nodded, and kept pointing until they get the idea that I let them choose first

Korean here.
That’s why I really enjoy play maimai in Australia.
but how re u gonna know when its ur turn + is no one gonna just steal ur card?
@@碳酰土豆 do u play other rhythm games at koko amusement? what re the fun ones? (i know, drs, maimai, sdvx, wacca chunitum, ddr and piu)
(doing it while not in a chart, for example, while selecting a song, is completely allowed BTW.)
There are also occasions where this is not the case, but for those cases, usually the queue is somewhere that's easily spottable by the arcade managers. Even if you *did* get to steal a card, people would usually just get a new card from the counter (5000 KRW or about 4 USD) and just transfer their data on the new card, rendering the stolen card useless.
“you can’t find a love at an arcade” thanks for the idea for a romance trope

In Hong Kong most people will accept playing together with strangers (from my experience at least), one more song for free is always good i guess

I love traveling 3 hours to Sydney to play maimai for 2 hours then traveling another 3 hours to get home.
that's so accurate
no way we gotta teach rhythm gamers how to socialize now
I needed this
I need this for all the rhythm games I've been playing. I even fell in love with one of the characters from pjsk-
Send help guys, I don't have a life anymore
In China, most players automaticly queue and play with stranger since everyone want to save money
Also, in many cases, people can hav fun together(including the audience who is queuing) even they are strangers, like watching a 16000 master getting high score and cheer together (I experienced that great maimai atmosphere when Im traveling in Shanghai
I love how this video reached the wrong target audience but still awfully relatable
Why's that?
@@SaowAngel you make the right points but from what I read in the comments most of them don't have an arcade with these rhythm games near them xd

Hello I am Maimai Indonesian Player and this is my activity on maimai day:
1. Buy Breakfast and Lunch
2. I Bought Drink from home which is some kind of water bottle mass product
3. Go to the mall with public transportation
4. i always go to mall before mall opens, so i depart from home like 8:00 - 8.30 AM and reach the mall in 30 minutes, because the mall open at 10:00 AM, i just wasting my time waiting in starb*cks store.
5. when the mall open, i just straight to arcade just to farming / grind my song chart which is Maimai, enjoy solo and duo with random (if there are people want to play). Each credit / one time play is (Rp 14000 / 0.85 USD).
Really fun video. I've really been enjoying your content recently, keep it up. Might have to try out maimai sometime if I can find a cabinet near me. Also fun seeing moondrop iems mentioned, my audiophile friend recommended them to me and I've been addicted to them for years now lol.
with the amount of players using them, i think i might give them a try lol
r there a specific ones worth looking for?
The fact that this entire video is circulated by maimai makes me happy, this game is truly great
Ok so I’m glad this video exists because I play DDR and one of my goals is to make friends, in person and online, but it just seems so difficult for me to do so. One time someone blocked me on Discord after I asked her if she plays DDR in Pennsylvania. Seriously, I’m not even joking 😂
1:29 hello it me
also this video is just too accurate, right down to the moondrop iems lmaoooo
i think what made socializing a bit easier for me is that as soon as i started playing i went to find a local maimai group online. with that i could feel less shy with interacting bcs i may have already seen (and talked to) them online. though this doesn't change the fact that i'm quiet irl and can't approach people easily
a light take but
the "boy and girl together = dating" trope is so stupid ngl. this happens a lot in vtubers like hololive (mostly inside hololive bc male fans want to collab with their favorites instead of the girls collabing with their... uhh... *COWORKERS??* (bc hololive also have a male group called holostars and its underrated bc ew males eugh))
like you can mistake a boy and girl "couple" because who knows theyre actually related and if they were dating as relatives then that means they pull an alabama? which is _very_ unlikely
people think that one heterosexual partners are lovers bc they keep thinking straight when they dont know about queer people existing like its just so random to assume that boy girl interactions = love couple
this is real world guys, wake up from your dreams
my go to arcade rhythm game is Dancerush Stardom. it took a while before i was comfortable playing without caring how i look around people doing so. but when i saw people playing on the machine for the first time so the anxiety spiked up for me, then someone asked if all of us could do a train on the machine. "fuk it we ball" mentality kicked in and it was the most fun ive had with other people in a rhythm game scenario
I look like shitbplaying drs but still impressive towards new ppl lol
2:50 That’s me on P2, wasn’t necessarily clapping him for the nice score (don’t get me wrong, it is), but I was clapping because he just beat me to win the tournament in the finals match 😅
But I will say for socialising, just let the other player pick 2 songs while you pick 2 of your own, and you don’t need to compliment them either if it feels awkward, just being courteous and having basic etiquette is good enough imo. Eventually you make friends from knowing each others’ shared interests and hobbies. 🙏
Oh nice and congrats on 2nd!
4:34 we aren't dating we're just good friends 🙂
Just a random note about the Philippines
- Our arcade gives deals for higher crediting so while the listed price is often about ₱40, the biggest deal makes it ₱27 per game instead!

i started playing maimai for the first time on the day you decided to plan for this video to come out
Now you have a head start on how to socialise
New maimai player here, I only have been playing for a week! Thanks for the tips! New mall recently opened near here with two arcades both with maimai DX. Had my first social interaction with one of them pro players and they asked if we could play together. It was a pleasant experience.
Maimai does not hit my bank account as hard as i expected (even though i have spent over 3 grand on the game) and tbh most of the socialising cases are pretty prevalent i was just lucky i had people supporting me at the start at a cab with 8+ queues back in the day
Honestly that's how i started as well. People at the beginning were nice so i would go just to socialise instead of play :)
Banger video and editing. Funny to me that Saow is a functioning human being giving advice only gamers would need like “try saying hello!”
THERE'S MAIMAI MACHINES IN PHILIPPINE ARCADES? I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE ALL MY LIFE
There quite a few kinda hard to play because god the que is mostly long asf or theres like a big team of pros just camping the machine lmao
Yeah theres a few mostly on quantum of bigger and popular malls like moa bgc etc
pro maimai ph player theres a bunch around lmao, like sm baguio, podium, rockwell/powerplant, whichever u prefer to call it, or uh... a lot of places with powerstation/quantum rlly
Also the editing in this video is so good
One of my favourite icebreakers is to pick the cooperative utage chart and asks if there are 2-4 people to clear hand in hand utage and whatnot.
Very informative! I do have a job and I do competitive rhythm gaming in my free time, funny enough before rhythm gaming i started music and I still am a musician playing for a professional brass band, but yeah This video is really informative and helps!
Edit: about socializing, i try to not do it as much now cause ive gotten a bit og backlash for my hyper energy on it (im autistic, adhd, ocd, anxiety, possible schizo) so ive been learning a lot of stuff with my therapist for this
Man your drawing is god tier❤
Stuff you said about arcade in china is false tho, there is a lot cabs but there are also so much more players. it's only those japanese players and they are completely anti social so they would go the effort to solo queue even if there are 10 people waiting and sega has to design game mechanic like pair playing missions and even then they still are solo queuing
I did talk to someone from china who complained about chinese players acoiding social interaction just how they do it in japan. Maybe it was based on experience or even certain provinces
The japanese part is still pretty sad lol
thats literally the timezone i go to in the first clip and when i saw that and i thought i was being stalked LOL
I feel like in the states we dont have these issues, but it could be that i primary play dance games versus hand games
Like im not an extraverted person in general, but I feel in the case for arcade socializing, even as a new player beginning to play Pump and looking up to experienced players it never felt that deep, like just have fun and talk
One of the few interactions I had from an arcade was just me complementing someone doing master levels. I'm new to the game and seeing someone in their element. They know they're good at the game, but they didn't see the outstanding performance I just saw.
I we had any rhythm games in Brazil... We only have Pump it Up (I love it, but still wanted to play other ones...) :(
AUSTRALIA MENTION
Love the vid, keep it up! Certainly was a shock to see the Sydney arcades randomly 🤣
It would be nice to have access to an arcade that has rhythm games in the first place.
there're probably none in my country
definitely not in my city
There was like 3 separate times I thought you were gonna launch into an ad read, bit it turns out you're just giving life advice to us lowly scrubs. 😢
I'm not big enough for sponsors 😦
wait... maimai machines exist in australia? dang... lucky
in brazil we have pump it up, occasional DDR and (from way too much research) 3 taiko machines
yes, in the entire country (that are avaliable to play)
i wish there were more active arcades close by!!
I literally work at a franchise shop inside of the shopping mall where the arcade is lol
Everyone else is resting, eating during breaks, meanwhile me: **welcome to maimai**
Its funny that these are the same things ud do and bring to a gym
1:37 Chinese player here.
While there're 1400+ arcades in China having maimai DX (and growing), it's still far from satisfying everyone:
maimai DX is soo expensive and so hard to buy (WAHLAP as the CN server reseller, selling a maimai DX at 88000 CNY, or 12000+ USD, and require the arcade owner to buy other stuff and made a 500,000 CNY order first before being able to purchase a maimai DX), so normal arcade have only 1 maimai DX, 2 would be rare and 3+ would be the arcade paradise in China.
And considering that the 1400+ arcades are spread across whole China, even in large city, it's still too less maimai DX to satisfy all the players from high school and university: one of the arcades I often go (because there're chunithm and usually it's not many people) will have 4~5 pairs people waiting in the queue for maimai, people even have a whiteboard there to keep record on who's in the queue and who's next
So solo queuing is also rather rare in China when there're multiple players waiting:
- it would be considered impolite / rude to keep others waiting extra long for only your needs, or sometimes getting criticized in local chat group
- it's super rare to encounter player who is social awkward, (I think I can only remember 1 player but she has a partner to play with (I had to solo-playing as the other 2 girls don't want to rotate...))
- but yes there're some times when top tier player (rating >16000) want to farm something and playing over and over again and they'll ask others to approve for solo queuing, but only when there're 3~5 people.
As for the money spend on playing maimai:
Usually arcade will take 6 coins for each round of play, But for how much a coin worth, that vary from arcade to arcade, and vary from package to package.
Around 2018 ~ 2020, it's usually 1 CNY for 1 coin, and a package will provide little discount like 200 CNY for 250 coins, so a round of maimai would cost 5 ~ 6 CNY (~100 JPY)
Recently, starting 2023, new arcades start a price war, they are selling their package in a surprisingly low price, 300 CNY for 1000 coins (0.3CNY per coin) or 1000 CNY for 4000 coins(0.25 CNY per coin), a round of maimai will only cost 1.5 ~ 1.8 CNY, 1/3 of the initial price.
Accurate.
i usually dont get to go to the arcade because where i live theres literally none
but when i went back to my hometown i was playing (im not that good when u can only play twice a year lol) and this 10 year old kid asked me if i wanted to play with him. absolutely decimated me tho but it was so cute and wholesome 😭
Demm I guess we singaporeans have it lucky here... Some arcades are $0.60 sgd per game, and these arcades have >5 cabs each so less waiting time. But sometimes it gets so crouded that we cant physically fit LOL :p
Wtf, moving to singapore

I want to create an interesting experience for everyone.
only good thing is that my nearest arcade with rhythm games is like, an hour walk away or a 2.90 bus ride (usd btw)
damn this video is too real, i too quantify all my purchases in how many games of maimai it's worth and 5:06 is me and my bf lmfao we just can't help it (i'm pretty sure i've passed his rating since i moved next to the arcade though). we did the love you utage kiss chart too of course
I'm really looking forward to playing arcade rhythm games in general actually, as in our country we have almost none of them, aside of Pump It Up, I guess that it'll only let me practice some games first on clones like, again, KSM for SDVX
Also hey, another light theme Discord user, very glad to see someone else using it
Because of maimai I get to do some walking to get to my local arcade and became acquainted with some players there. Without it I doubt I would have left my room to socialize outside of school.
I went to the arcade for like 2 weeks and met like 4 or 5 people, even went to eat with some of them ! Feels good when you dont have many friends ! Dont have their contact tho, i just go to the arcade and maybe one of them will be here😂
Disappointed that "take regular showers" wasn't a piece of critical advice in here.
Banger video as always, thank you guardian angel 😇
3:31 I felt overwhelmed to the point watching watching more experienced players is more entertaining then actually trying the game itself-
Update : Finally got the courage to actually play the game with other players, man they're surprisingly welcoming, thought some are hard to approach....
Also, F2P

It's all the arcades, i know one of them has it for $4.50. It's probably price inflation with the aus dollar but still fucked up
1:36 it's actually also a thing in vietnam (or at my local arcade at least). There are only 2 maimai cabs but there is a queueing board where you can write your name to queue. When you wanna do solo queueing, you just need to write [your name] (solo).
socializing is so scary that i only play maimai if only there's one person playing it.
i also find that the best time to play maimai is the time before i go to school (around 11am), cuz most ppl that play there are students and they r probably at school morning schedule (6am - 2pm) 😁 (i am in afternoon schedule (12pm - 6pm))
also, the arcade is just near to the school i attend to.
Lmao describing the food budget in terms of arcade credits is great
Have fun going to an arcade on a bus or train, the eshays pull the most wild antics
Here's my guide if you're in the Philippines (wow) since I am (and I'm desperate to rid myself of it):
Most people are more than happy to accommodate new players, and if you are a complete beginner, there likely is one person who eases you into both the game and the local community. (I was introduced by two people, but a certain 15k player in my location was the one who really eased me in. I owe them a lot.)
Be sure to ask about the queue, since the chance of players wanting to play in sync is usually higher than wanting to solo - often reserved for the hard grind. (Not to mention for DX cabs, a single credit costs a lot already if you base your income in our country, and getting to play 4 instead of 3 songs is already worth enough to play with someone else.)
Players tend to be responsive towards the "any song suggestions" question and usually give you one of three things - a song they like to play, a song they think will match your skill level, or a troll pick like ones from the PANDORA BOXXX. All we do is done in good faith.
Some branches have a dedicated queue list - be sure to check. And while at it, be sure to ask about anything you might need to know.
Oh, and please, no PDA. It's fine to be and show you're in a relationship, just don't rub it in others' faces.
If only i had an arcade in my area, let alone one with rythm games...

If you are selecting a song, please at least consider the other player wellbeing even though you both paid to play, it really sucks when you got spammed with a certain new lvl 15 song all the time or maybe the other player have beef with a certain song because of goofy charting.
im in the philippines and some arcades have cheaper prices like 30pesos per play although it was always crowded everytime i went there
I can relate to this 100% of the time lol.
I can walk to arcade only 10-mins walk from my home. There has maimai, Chunithm, taiko, iidx, sdvx, jubeat, wacca, groove coaster, and DDR.
The only rhythm game arcade cabinets near me are all PIU, which isn't bad, but I wish we had access to sound voltex or maimai or taiko. Doesn't help that the closest PIU cabinet is an hour away by public transport :/
I don't have access to maimai so I just suffer 😭
Discovered chrono circle which at least scratches some of the maimai itch, but Wacca is my favorite currently that I have access to (I just wish it had more songs)
I wish my country had more rhythm arcade machines, i swear god i couldn't find more than some rare pump it up machines.
ok but why is this video actually helpful
2 years of expereince B)
moving to japan in a few days and I have a feeling my maimai addiction is gonna spike hard
Actually, in China, most arcades only include 1 maimai machine, 2 is rare, and any number greater than that is obscure. In my city, there is a Round 1, but it takes 2 hours to even get there, so I usually head to the nearer arcade even though it only has 1 maimai machine.
Maybe one day I'll play arcade rhythm games
Cool advice that I can't apply because there are no arcades in my country and I can only play at home versions of rhythm games :D
i live in singapore and im too scared to play maimai ever since i saw the washing machine cabinet like 5 years ago. im now a wangan midnight player who wishes he spent his money on maimai instead, and still have no guts to try the game myself
Well then Try it now
@@NotCoraLives I have no guts
@@ruinthehi, which arcade u go to usually lol I go nex/bugis virtualand

Great video! My boyfriend sent me this because of 4:29 LMAO
It's really hard at first but socializing at arcades can become super fun in moderation!
