My comment ‘got lost’, so here again: Oh man, Phil, this was such a fire review and reaction to this song! I’m digging your analyses and your way with words ⭐️⭐️⭐️ they’re killer in their own right 👍 So thnx man. Love this cover, it’s seems to be getting better with every listen over the years :) A few facts: So Cory, who’d never met the Loops at that stage but knew of them and liked their stuff, called up Jonah one day during the lockdown years, and said: “Hey guys, do you want to record a song together?” “Sure”, they said. “Do you want to make a cover of Thriller?” “Why not”, they said. “Let’s swing it in 12/8. And heck, why not make a whole album together?” “Sure”, they said. The result was ‘Turbo’, and it’s LIT!! So back then, both bands started writing and arranging all the tunes from their two respective continents (Cory and his horns from the US, and the Loops from Sweden). Even Jonah, Aron and Henrik couldn’t visit each other much for a while. After sending files forth and back, FaceTiming and finally having recorded everything, they came up with the idea of creating two identical stage sets, one in the US and one in Sweden, got themselves identical carpets, lamps, camera angles, lighting angles etc., and filmed it as tho they were on the same stage. Later on Aron edited all the footage together, to make it look as tho they’re all on the same stage 😱 Taking crazy to a new level. So despite never having met in person back then, they sure make it feel as if they’d been playing together for years, - and not just visually. Cory Wong is an amazing musician and worth diving into. His horns here are partially original members of the famous Hornheadz which Prince founded, and who have toured and recorded with him for many years, as well,as with other great artists. Another deep dive-. All of them are stellar musicians and often also composers and arrangers in their own right. There also is an interview featuring Henrik Linder, on Cory’s podcast ‘Cory and the Wong Notes’ ;) They talk bass, music and the making of this album. I still think that your peanut butter and chocolate comparison holds 😉 To me, these two bands are a match made in heaven, and this Thriller is one of the happiest Thrillers around :D Also, Aron’s playing here on this track is just so good! The credits too are worth getting into ;) All of the seven tracks from this album are insanely good. Four of them have a video attached: “Follow the Light”, “Turbo” and “Ring of Saturn”. I’d love to see your reactions to those. It’s sure good to see you back in action, Phil! 👍🙏☺️
So glad you're reacting to them! Please listen to their original song, the Cory Wong collab "Follow the Light." It's an incredible gem, and Henrik really shines.
Great reaction - I love the part where the horn section takes over in that "spooky" arrangement and Henriks bass playing is like a fast heartbeat that skips a beat (and of cause still plays it soooo tight).
Wackojacko had nothing to do with this composition as well, like the rest of all of his so called music. This was composed, written and arranged by Rod Temperton except the horns that were arranged by Jerry Hey.
