Thanks mate. I've been a drummer in a pipe band in New Zealand for 40 years. Our daughter turns 10 next month. Shes decided to learns the pipes then. At the tender age of 49 I will learn with her. I often thought of learning the pipes but have always procrastinated. I plan to continue being a band drummer but having 4 tunes as a base for my own playing enjoyment as well as playing at a birthday, wedding etc etc, If I become good enough of course.
Hello from India I'm pipe major of our bagpipe band, Since last 5 years we've been playing bagpipe on Indian notes like ( SA , RE , GA , MA , PA, DHA , NI , SA ) I personally wanted to switch on English scale from Indian notes , thank you so much for basic lesson. This was great help 👍 Can you send me any type of your contact? I would love to learn new melodies. Thank you once again
not really a bagpipe guy but I notice this chanter really puts a toll on your face muscles, so it's great excercise for brass players like me that got friggin' braces on their teeth, specially the Bb and higher trumpets.. might as well learn how to play this thing in the mean time
7 years later this beginner thought that hardie had sold him a ducks call. so i taped all the holes and sure enough it sounded like a chanter after all.
Solid video mate. Having a hell of a time going from B to low G without squawking. I can do the scale up and down no problem... however when I have to go from F to B to low G... My fingers want to miss low G every time. Been practicing those fingerings all week. f-b-LG
What chanter would you recommend? I want to start learning the bagpipes but there’s a massive variety of chanters and I don’t know which one to choose. Thanks! 😁
marotodemolay, how are you ? I am a brazilian bagpiper maker and player. The GHB (great highland bagpipe) plays these 9 notes from G to A in a myxolidian scale. The galician bagpipe, for example, plays more notes, I mean, 14 notes. A chromatical scale. We made the 2 bagpipes and others too.
I just got a bagpipe and I noticed a crack where the hole for the thumb is and I was wondering if I should put a tape over it or not and do I have to have the drones (I think it’s what it’s called) at any right settings? And also I don’t have anyone to teach me where I live.
When it comes to how high to lift fingers, play around with irish tin whistle a bit, since piping can he fast irish whistle is good reference for how high you need to lift fingers, fingering is all other story.
So is a bagpipe just 1 octave? There's no semi-tones or half steps in a bagpipe? So is a Bagpipe just basically like one of those recorders we had in 4th grade with a big air sack attached? Also what key do most pipers play in?
Hi all -- I've just started using a chanter (about 2 weeks in to it) - can anyone tell me if it makes a difference which hand I have on top? (that is, when I play bagpipes) - I have been using my right hand on top as it comes more naturally (despite being right handed)
Correct me if I'm wrong... but the scale should be a mixolydian mode starting on the b7. If you're tuned in A the notes would be G, A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A. You are playing and singing a G major scale from the lowest note.
+Joshua Anderson Finally!! I find someone thats knows what he is talking about...!! It was driving me crazy as well because everybody keeps saying that scotish pipe is tuned in SI/B bemol... Using the piano and looking at some written music I was able to see a couple of # at the key (meaning Fa or F and Do or C are #, a semitone higher and that is exactly Re or D major...!!! At least, when Joshua sings the scale with his voice, he is making the right Fa/F and Do/C correctly a semitone higher! Thanks a lot!!!
+I Ruipérez I think it's useful to know that it's the same notes as D major... but essential to realise that the tonic for most of the music is A (or whatever note comes out when lift only the bottom little finger), and the sound is that of the mixolydian mode... Not the sound of D major!
So if someone could shed some light here, that'd be great. I've started the chanter, but I actually read music. so is the chanter poorly tuned? or is bagpipe music written for a majority of musically illiterate musicians, so they don't write in sharps, since there's no chromaticism to adjust for anyway? should I just imagine 2 #'s in all bagpipe music for my own sanity?
So much wrong going on here... it cracks me up how ppl love to reform music and scales and their names.... if we go to the origins there is no need. G mixolydian is A7 from the 7th degree. Neither of these are the origins however if we're talking about eastern music
Whoah, I just wanted to hear the scale. This is just intonation, right? Not equal temperament. No wonder it excites my ears so and the harmonies and overtones feel unique. Do I have it right?
Can you play sharp and flat notes on tje bagpipe? If posible, would you upload a vid explaining finger positions to play em (sharp and flat) And just as a curiosity is the chanter (the part with the holes) the same lenght as a sweet flute?
Order of holes is as follows: Thumb, top hand, bottom hand. X = closed, O = open. C natural: X XXX XOXO F natural: X XOX XXXO (These notes maybe incorrectly written as Cb and Fb.) However, these notes are really only used in modern music.
Why does this practice changer have such a duller, poorer tone than the changer on a full set of bagpipes? The ones on the bagpipes sounds higher and crisper, and brighter. (Not discrediting your skill)
Hey man , really informative video... I'm a professional trumpet player, but I've always wanted to pick up the bagpipes.. do you think the transition will be easier or harder in my case?
hey, i just bought a practice chanter and i never played in this instrument before so i don't know if its normal but its very hard to make sound and i need to blow very hard, is it normal or it just the fault of my chanter?
Hey so I just started playing, and my chanter sounds like it's out of tune, and when I say that I mean it's an entire note off lol. Like my A sounds like your G. How do I fix this?
It's not totally unheard of to have your hands reversed and still play with the bag under your left arm. The only downside is that you will have maybe a harder time striking in the drones and to play the lowest note and specially do birls. I'm getting a practice chanter in some months and I'm definitely gonna play reversed. I play the penny whistle and I've tried with my right hand under (the normal way) but I simply cannot do it. In the end, just play in the way that it's most comfortable to you. Take a look at this picture of Donald MacLean of Lewis: i168.photobucket.com/albums/u196/pancelticpiper/donaldmaclean.jpg
OMG..... if your left handed, play in reverse ??????....................Bagpipes are not designed to go under any specific arm.... if your left handed you buy left handed bag! I have several left handed players in my band...... no issue.
Can a chanter be out of tune? I've gone through the trial and error dealing with the sqeaking sounds of not covering the holes... the notes just don't sound anywhere near right.
It could be possible. They do offer "youth chanters" that are a little bit smaller. But I will also ask this,... are you sure you are not holding the chanter too tight? The soul (bottom) of your practice chanter should rest on a table while you are practicing. The mouthpiece just resting on your lips. Your fingers shouldn't really hold the chanter as much as just covering the holes. If your holding too tight, then your wrist will start to hurt and your fingers cant move like they should to play. I hope this helps.-Kelly
I think it's because the bagpipes, if put to a western scale, are in the key of D, so F and C would be sharp, unless played naturally, which is harder for lower reed instruments to produce properly. I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but I think that's why.
If you have a plastic reed in your practice chanter, try putting a rubber band on it, not to tightly, and sliding it up or down to get the desired sound.
If you can afford a Gibson or find a Dunbar, those are my favorites. They have great sound. Be careful buying cheap on ebay. They don't have very good sound and might discourage you. I hope this helps.-Kelly
So, why do you call it C and F instead of C# and F# - isn't this a D major instrument? I guess relative to itself, there is no need? - just confusing since I hear C# and F# - I assume everything you play would be comprised of an octave and one extra note... so there are just the 9 notes then?
Featured work. .... I would like to tell you that if you translate the lessons into Arabic, it will benefit you. And the number of your followers will increase
You are stupid. Thats a practice chanter the bagpipe before you play the bagpipe. You then just have the blowpeice and the chanter with a bag called a goose just like fucking you are. Then you add the drones which make it a full setta pipes. Daft bint.

My Neighbour won't stop blasting loud ass music in the middle of the night. Thanks for the tutorial! Think I'm ready to get revenge
Good for you! I can just imagine his dilemma.
Did you get your revenge?
best comment i've seen here lol
So, did you're other neighbors get revenge on you in return then? Eventually the whole block will be super loud hahaha
I cant afford a bag pipe so im just gonna get a practice chanter and play it till i convince my mom to get me one
Lol
That’s where you should start anyway . Good luck
Great minds think alike
Good luck
Most bands teach for free
Thanks for the help. Esp the tip on the crossing noise from the D to the E.
Sound like a european ambulance or it just me

Very detailed and easy to follow, great help
That oink oink sound in demonstration of faulty technique was rather amusing!
Thanks a lot ! Now I know that my terrible sounds when playing were caused by the fact I hadn't practiced covering the holes enough ;)
7 years later this beginner thought that hardie had sold him a ducks call. so i taped all the holes and sure enough it sounded like a chanter after all.
Me too
Now i know
Solid video mate. Having a hell of a time going from B to low G without squawking. I can do the scale up and down no problem... however when I have to go from F to B to low G... My fingers want to miss low G every time. Been practicing those fingerings all week. f-b-LG
5:17 I am not mature enough to listen to that
What chanter would you recommend? I want to start learning the bagpipes but there’s a massive variety of chanters and I don’t know which one to choose.

The site is back up and running, sorry for the wait.

My dad had one of these when I was a kid…. I just remember it was harder than hell to make a sound through…. Could never blow through it
Brilliant thanks. So I can play the scale up and down. Not perfect yet but getting there .what’s next
I like bagpipes.
5:17, it sounds like an old wooden creaking door :D lol
😂😂😂😵😵😂
I am learning so I need to see this
Very cool

Left on top always. Both hand will do plenty of work.
thank's a lot !!!! joe form france
Mate, you rock my world!
Love the bagpipes
When playing mine it sounds high pitched and doesn't change when putting my fingers over the holes.

Just starting out, thank you very much for the video.
I'm new to the Chanter. Seems a bit hard to blow through this thing. Is that normal?
I have the Gibson Poly Practice Chanter and the Low G is a very long stretch to cover. When I feel I do cover it, the sound doesn't change. :(
Where do find a large practice chanter like that?
J Higgins website sells a 22" and an 18.5"
Whoah, I just wanted to hear the scale. This is just intonation, right? Not equal temperament. No wonder it excites my ears so and the harmonies and overtones feel unique. Do I have it right?
Is it supposed to be low or high? I've got one from Scotland and the notes change depending on how hard I blow
Is the scale the same as recorder? 🤔
Are Bagpipes a "Treble-cleff" or "Bass-cleff" instrument??
Maybe I'll play 'Celebration' by Kool & the Gang
Ah você é brasileiro?? Legal. Você constroi e toca? Tem algum site ? Estou querendo comprar e aprender.
Thx you realy helped me with my chanter now I know how to do it
Is it basically same for all different bagpipes?
Yes.
Help please its very hard for me to put my giant scot hands on the chanter the right way and when i do they cramp any help
its mostly my thump on the bottom hand
Can you play sharp and flat notes on tje bagpipe? If posible, would you upload a vid explaining finger positions to play em (sharp and flat)
And just as a curiosity is the chanter (the part with the holes) the same lenght as a sweet flute?
Yes you can play some sharps and flats, (the C and F are already sharpened by default), but the other notes are not used.
no not really
alright! thanx!
Order of holes is as follows:
Thumb, top hand, bottom hand.
X = closed, O = open.
C natural: X XXX XOXO
F natural: X XOX XXXO

that was really usefull thanx man!

Does a modern set of pipes have chromatic facility??

Yes
hey, i just bought a practice chanter and i never played in this instrument before so i don't know if its normal but its very hard to make sound and i need to blow very hard, is it normal or it just the fault of my chanter?
, no, you probably have a Pakistani chanter, they are terrible. Please go to McCallum and. Buy a good practice chanter.
would playing the clarinet help me with the bagpipes
yea
Gabe -not really. I played clarinet and this is way different. Familiarity with a wind instrument might be a leg up. I dunno
What type of pipes would you recommend?
Hey so I just started playing, and my chanter sounds like it's out of tune, and when I say that I mean it's an entire note off lol. Like my A sounds like your G. How do I fix this?
Buy reed
Do you put your teeth on the chanter (bite on it) when you play it?
Lovely video btw ^^
Thank you, very helpful comment ^^
Hi Joshua, I am left handed can I learn to play with hands reversed?

is there a way to get a low octave E on the chanter?
When you sang and played the G scale you sang and played an F# not an F

I thought lydian?
@@AndrewKerensky lydian is when you play F to F in all natural notes. So F G A B C D E F.

the bagpipe just play these 9 notes?? what is it extension?
When my little sister was learning the violin my father quickly built her a tree house..
Can you recommend a good practice chanter for purchase? Total noob.
Ebay is full of them. I just got mine local from craigs. $20 reputable brand. The only noob question, is the one not asked... Rock on!
If you can afford a Gibson or find a Dunbar, those are my favorites. They have great sound. Be careful buying cheap on ebay. They don't have very good sound and might discourage you. I hope this helps.-Kelly
Unbelievable! Even the chanter is difficult!
Top, bottom or vers?

how come all the notes sound the same when I try that? lol
that was cool
Mine only has 6 holes
Good
Lol @ piperjim, I agree
Featured work. .... I would like to tell you that if you translate the lessons into Arabic, it will benefit you. And the number of your followers will increase
And then after this video you just buy a full set of pipes, drink a full (and I mean full) fifth of the Glenlivet
All I get is a squeal, and an occasional growl no matter what I do.
How are MacCallum pipes as a starter set?
4:02 I don’t know what you need to do, but that tuning is begging for some sort of attention, that sounded kinda rough
sir can u make a tutorial on despacito plsssss
would be nice if chanters would be in tune.
its f sharp
It’s similar to a recorder
I hate my internet. I dont want to stare at Jack Black's long lost cousin for five minutes I just wanna play my pipes.
0:34 znuts
i dont even own a bagpipe
does marries wedding start with a e
how do we know you were really teatchign us to play the bag pipe you did not play the bagpipe to prove anything D:
you sing it wrong 0:22
*CLICKBAIT!!!!!* - he does NOT show ANY Bagpipes in this video! :(
You are stupid. Thats a practice chanter the bagpipe before you play the bagpipe.
You then just have the blowpeice and the chanter with a bag called a goose just like fucking you are.

That scale sounded bad
🫨😳😬 Omigod - at 4:00? RESOLVE TO TONIC!!! I can seriously get a Doctor's Note if you need me to provide you with one..... 😂
Bagpipe Master mmm. I have been playing for many years and i can say you are not a Bagpipe Master.
Where I ask is your videos then.
