Thank you... you taught me how to play this song. Today i was asked by my family to play this at my fathers funeral. This being the saddest day of my life it was terrible for me. But my father never got to hear this song. I hope you liked it pops. I will miss him but i had to stop by and say thank you
My Church was given a set of bagpipes along with guitars, Violin drums etc. However nobody knows how to play the bagpipes... I have always wanted to learn sooooooo They are going to let me learn it. and when I am ready...... I will join the band on certain songs.... :D I am excited, always wanted learn them..
Hope you're still at it! I don't know if I've ever heard them anywhere other than a recording, but I've heard they're awfully loud. What do they sound like in a church?
I learned it pretty quickly with your help, thanks Josh. I'd love it if you could break down Scotland the brave in the same way that you did with amazing grace. Thanks again, you're the best instructor I've seen on UA-cam.
This is really helpful! Thank you for breaking down the music so clearly, step by step. You are a very clear instructor, thank you! You give me hope that someday I might be able to play...
i wanted to learn to play the bagpipers 12 years ago, bought a cheap chanter and dicsc, and tried by myself to learn, then found Bagpipe Masers, then hired a music teacher/one hour away..(hard to find)..that was a break through...4 years later now and I can 'almost' play Amazing Grace/Happy Birthday/Amer the Beau /and Scotland the Brave/you would know what I am playing, but it's not perfect Bagpipe Masters on u tube has been very very helpful..../THANK YOU Dean from Placerville California
I learned the heavy D throw many years ago. I hardly ever play the lite one. But for those who are uninformed; it takes two instruments to learn the GHB. The practice chanter you see and hear now is the first. But the piper never gives up the practice chanter because he/she is constantly practicing old tunes and learning new ones. Good instructions, Laddie. A' thu best.
I am just a beginner. Two things have inspired me to start learning. The first person who inspired me, probably was not even as good as you. That would be Bon Scott. Also I am in the American Legion, and perform military honors at graveside services. It would be nice to be able to provide this kind of service to families. I still can’t quite keep up with you on the play along. Give me another day or two though.
I don't have a tutorial for Scotland the Brave yet, but I hope to make one soon. However I just created a link to get the free sheet music for Scotland the Brave on my website BagpipeMaster.
Your stuff is awesome. I have my 2nd lesson next week, and found your video uploads soooo helpful. My tutor has done scales and have sheet music to master which I have done, and in process of learning myself my first 5 tunes. The amazing grace is the first I have the grace notes in and working on the rest. Don't know when tutor will cover the grace notes but looking forward to next lesson.
My wife doesn't want me to learn the pipes... can't understand why...but I've told her that when I learn a complete song on the chanter I AM buying a set of pipes....I'm almost there with your teaching of Amazing Grace...doing quite well actually...so within the week pipes will be ordered...I have a hard time understanding why she is off the pipes... 7 of her grandfathers were kings of Scotland... maybe it's just me...? hah. Thanks --Frank
Hi, I have a slightly different version of this song which I learnt many years ago, when you get to the first set of grace notes which goes g d g, the version I have goes g d c, now it may seem like a tiny difference but its not according to my teacher.Grace notes are done purely for percussive effect, so it stands to reason that dropping all 3 fingers on a grace note is a bit over the top, if you make it a C grace note you only drop the one finger instead of all 3. Now I've just realised watching your video that (as far as I know as a beginner) most or all? grace notes are meant to be played with just a sweep of one finger because they are meant to be fast, percussive, and most importantly shouldn't sound for long enough to be heard as a note. So that would make the 3 finger drop unnecessary?Probably opening up a can of worms with this one but as a more experience piper I would be keen to hear your thoughts.
thanks for exist,i am spanish and i play galician pippe,i can play this song in my pippe and thanks for you i can play too more amazings songs, sorry for my english but i need to soy you tanks
Started 4 months ago, you and matt Willis have been very educational ... but... I cant learn sheet music lol I played guitar for years and it dinged on me... why not numbers? I wrote sheet music for pipes in numbers (0-7 means thumb on and t for just thumb ) wow, in 3 months I now play amazing grace,Scotland the brave and the gael ... the whole numbers thing is sick easy.... big numbers for notes ,small tight for grace notes
This es great and so the vid en how to playa scotland the brave Would you please make a vídeo where you explain how to tap in the channer (i think im new in allí of this)
Quite interesting. It'll be a bit of work to adapt this to german open fingering, and I guess I'll play around with the graces here and there (not overly fond of some, plus a few will simply not work with open fingering. Good thing I'm flexible there ... ^^), but it's a very helpful breakdown. Will sound somewhat different on our non-scottish pipes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? ^^ Anyway, thanks a lot.
Hi, a really good tutorial, it helped me a lot! But i have a question to the second line, especially to the last part (6:12-6:21 in the video). As i understand, both "ta-daa's" (playing an "A" with a brush and than again) become played absolutely identical, but why they are noted different on the sheet music? Have i overseen something? I really can't find any differences.
hello I just received my chanter in the mail about two days ago I have watched a few videos I broke my pinky few years ago and I feel like I can't fully cover the hole do I have any other options
hi josh I was wondering if you can help me cant read or write I find things hard to learn it took me a month to learn the pipes also could you make a video so leaving amazing grace so I can go to the graveside and play got small hands so my little finger wont touch low a could I extend my little finger thank you
I am having trouble with a very flat F. I have tried everything I can think of. These are a cheaper set of pipes, and I’m able to remedy every other notes to keep intonation, but the F is muffled and very flat. It sounds like some kind of strange jazz scale arrangement as an Fnat. Lol Any suggestions?
My chanter sounds completely out of tune to yours. Should I worry about tuning the chanter, and if so can you point me towards instructions on how to do so?
Hi Josh, on the chanter, is one supposed to play the entire line in a single breath? Or is there some sort of cyclical breathing that sustains it throughout the entire song? Thanks!
+Timothy Tan. It doesn't really matter when you take a breath on the practice chanter since once you transition to the full bagpipes the bagpipe bag will allow you to maintain a steady pressure while you take a breath.
Probably a very common question... Where can I find a good (and cheap, please) bagpipe to start to learn? Or is it better to begin with another type of flute?
***** Thanks! Only one more question... I found some names such as Glenluce and McCallum that are way cheaper than Dunbars and Gibsons... Do they worth it or are just rubbish?
no. the chanter is only a "fingering" tool. In a set of pipes, there is a mouthpiece that is used to inflate the bag by blowing air into the bag. The elbow compresses the bag, forcing air out the drones and the chanter - poof...bagpipe music is made.
You go from a A to D in the beginning and just walk away from the explaining of the music by note. It would be friendlier to explain what you're doing on each bar and the line then step up and play that line. To have the ability to go back and start/stop at certain points.
Every time he says "pretty easy" I am about to crash my head into the table. Don't know why but it's hard for me. Probably because I always feel like changing the melody a bit. I can play guitar and russian accordion, that was easy. I got my backpipe almost a year ago, but still very little progress 0:) still trying though
Thank you... you taught me how to play this song.

I learned it pretty quickly with your help, thanks Josh. I'd love it if you could break down Scotland the brave in the same way that you did with amazing grace. Thanks again, you're the best instructor I've seen on UA-cam.

It’s not how well you play, it’s THAT you play! Thanks....

I have a McCallum GHB models p4 (with poly drones)n a pratice chanter McCallum polypenco n both sounds great.
I know this is a weird question, but do you tounge theese notes?
