Gotta love a dude who takes bike tinkering to the next level
He’d make a great GCN presenter👍
True hahahahaha
I agree GCN should recruit him for DIY projects
Agreed. Rob’s a top bloke!!!
Definitely, get him in there guys, we need some silver back alpha male banter.
I don't want to listen how abused this guy is anymore
From Cycling track World and Olympic Champion to innovator, inventor, and cycling commentator... Rob Hayles is a creative genius and a modern day Renaissance man. A down-to-earth and humble chap to boot. One of my all time favorite GCN videos!
And a legend
Makes a mean coffee too I hear.
This dude is just great!
And I'd say the biggest proof, that he trusts his own repaired parts, is that he let's his own daughter ride the repaired fifespoke.
I really hope he comes up in another video :)
Lovely bloke
Yep yep, now that's the proof of absolute confidence of his own work.
Would've loved Dan interviewing him for this episode! 😂
twonk
Absolute racing legend and a bit of a visionary. Jon, you should get him in as a special guest for a Tech show or two. Would be interesting to hear his opinions on some of the current tech. Great show.
That helmet alone is a work of art, and a lot of the other pieces, too.
Wonderful.
What a legend. A proper thinking man ahead of his time, and pushing what was acceptable. Glad to see im not the only one mucking about with carbon in my spare time!
This was one of the very best gcn interviews I've watched ever. What passion and such a creative guy.
Glad you enjoyed it
I've always liked Robs commentary and no nonsense attitude towards things, I can see you are both cut from the same cloth and get on really well. Can we see more of this on GCN.
Great video Jon
Awesome. Saw him at his last race up Long Hill and could tell he was still in love with everything about the sport.
great to see someone who lives through his passion of cycling , and has become a craftsman in his own right ,
That's definitely one of my favourite GCN videos to date. Please get him on the show again.
I absolutely love Jon´s "nerdy" attitude and his genuine interest in both this video and the corsa corsa bike shop, it´s like watching a child in a candy shop, never change man
Nerd! Cheeky so and so
Rob is the man! Bring him back for more
Love it.. "How did you get into cycling?".."Me dad, he was a wrestler" 😐
Killer Kowalski !!!
@@tednruth453 I used to watch Killer Kowalski on the saturday wrestling show in my teen years (1960s) here in Australia, and wondered if Rob's father was that guy, but it turns out there were two. The one I knew from back then was a Canadian guy with Polish parents, known for his famous 'claw hold'. It was strange seeing the name on that poster in Rob's shed.
Love custom home hand layed carbon! And yes the cycling inspired bug ! Its real....the love we have for a bike as kids will always be in us!
Just so interesting and unbelievable . I've just watched a video where Rob won the National 25mile TT championship in Nottinghamshire about 1998 I think near me where myself and my dad rode to watch and riding to the finish to see the results Rob passed us like he was riding a motorbike . And I was on my fixed training bike with dad sat behind me telling me to go on, go on and I / we could hear him catching us but couldn't believe how fast he passed us . I've never forgotten that day and when I think back about it I always SMILE for several reasons . Thanks for the memories ❤
Awesome video. I could listen to him talk for days if he had invited me to his shop. I love that he makes his gear and has kept his bikes. Love it!
That was brilliant. Please, please do more stuff with Rob. Anything he's involved with will be fantastic 👍
Rob Hayles.... one of Britain's cycling legends
Best GCN video in ages, proper cycling tech - no bullshit.
Thanks
Wow, your best video yet Jon. What a star Rob Hayles is. Love the way he has taken "recycling" to another level. Sorry about the pun.
Love Robs attitude to carbon. Why throw away when you can repair or repurpose? Now I just need to build a shed like that for my experiments. Great vid
This could be the start of a new series about retired pro's who are still doing it in cycling one way or another. I understand that people like Colin Lewis is still alive and hosting courses around the Med. Must be lots like him that would make an interesting 20 minutes to viewers old and young.
Good idea
Mr. Hayles would make a great presenter for GCN, especially segments related to Track cycling.
I remember him racing a Castle Combe road race in the mid 90’s with a disc on the back and he lapped the field
Been lucky enough to meet and casually chat with Mr Hayles and he just the coolest guy ever , so easy to talk to , just a normal chap who loves bikes . Many egotistical club riders could learn a lot from this man
If there's one thing that makes me smile, it's how excited Jon gets over this stuff. I'd say it's that sense of "childlike wonder," but I don't think I ever wondered at something that hard even when I was a child.
Haha. Brilliant times
Im like it with old skateboards
Rob Hayles needs to do more live cycling commentary. From what little I've heard, he's highly entertaining, and absolutely hilarious!
What an outstanding person Rob is. Awesome video.
Had the pleasure seeing and meeting Rob back in adelaide at AIS Delmonti many many years ago. Enjoy listening to him commenting 🚴🏻♂️
Jon, this video was great to watch on a rainy Sunday morning. Thank you. The only other thing I could have asked for was his carbon-fiber-working methods he has developed over the years.
I had a wheel repaired by Rob last year . Fantastic job done and it was great to see his workshop and have a chat too. He’s a top man and knows his stuff.
So so so so interesting! Amazing passion for riding your own creations from literally scratch with such details!
My favorite bit is the velodrome mavic 5 spoke wheels still flying like in it’s glory
Great isn't it!
This is gold dust! They both know their stuff, but imagine the pub bollox they'd be talking if they had a couple of pints too. That would be worth watching!
My favorite bit of the video? That gorgeous stonework and brickwork, the Adirondack chair, the soccer goal... Can we revisit Rob, maybe have a chat with his stonemason and his groundskeeper?
Seriously though, I'd love to hear an update from Rob on modern tech - I just put the same SRAM groupset he's shown on his wife's bike on my own trusty steed. Second hand parts, a few years out of date, maybe, but still the most sophisticated (and expensive) bit of kit I've ever ridden on. And the Mavic 5 spokes on the other bike, beautiful - I've got some very functional Spinergy Rev X 4 spokes on my bike now which were second hand from a local racer, and have seen me through some pucker inducing local brick roads at full gas. Again, maybe not your first choice, but the price was right and mine are the later revision with the rivets to stop (delay?) delamination...
Unrelated but I had the same lathe. China-brand, red team edition, but the same nonetheless. Very useful for one-off work on small parts - I gave it to my brother to "make room" for a larger lathe that required its own cabinet / floor space, but I hardly make use of the big lathe. Many jobs that I used the small lathe for, I now do with a hacksaw and file. One step forward, two steps back. You'd be amazed at how many jobs in the home shop involve cutting a small piece of tubing, clean and square. Bigger lathe, more effort to change the chuck, the tooling, etc.
One of the best vids I’ve seen for a while great watch & “watch”. Rob is pure gold. His stories about his projects are fascinating loved it.
Like eavesdropping on a couple of mates catching up after years apart. Thanks for the invite.
I think that's why it worked so well. He's a mate who loves fiddling with stuff as much as I do.
Awesome video, glad i stumbled across this - Rob Hayles' is amazing - TY!!
I remember Rob was right on the cusp between steel and carbon. A true pioneer!!
All the details in this shop are amazing. Notably, the hexagonal worksurface on the bench and the NERF gun!
What a legend and what a great way to utilise your passion and expand on your skill set. Idol!
Absolutely awesome video. Hats off to Rob - legend!
Very good, Love seeing guys who tinker with bike stuff.👍🏻
Thanks GCN for a great look at Rob Hayles... Love the video
NOT ONLY A GREAT CYCLIST BUT ENGINEER AS WELL AND I LOVE ALL HIS STUFF !!!
Superb that, a great little set up to use and create some real gems from a product we all bin once damaged 👍
What a cracking bloke and pretty clever too in an unassuming way. Great production.
Absolutely love this video. Two leg-ends of the British Cycling scene talking dirty about bespoke, hand made bike bits! Fan-flippin-tastic! Love the custom SRAM lever, thanks JC and RH!
Blimey. Am I a legend?! I know Rob is.
@@JonCannings OK, so Rob Hayles may have had a slightly higher profile career as a rider and subsequently part of British Cycling, but he didn't start the GCN Tech channel did he. Credit where credit's due! Keep up the good work.
ua-cam.com/video/mFM_NQK8F-E/v-deo.html when I first watched this, a little bit of wee came out.
He’s the undefeated King of Hack/Bodge
Top notch interview. Rob Hayles is blessed with many talents and mad skills.

Excellent Video, Excellent! I loved his book too. Yes, he would be a great presenter with you on GCN.

Remember doing a crit with him and he had stuck about 25mm of an mtb bar ends to the tops of his STI levers for a Spinachi effect grip. Mighty engine

I like this guy. He's a man after my own heat. I love working with carbon fiber.
It makes me wish I still had my old Redline BMX and Kuwahara Cruiser....
"Never sacrifice looks for speed". Couldn't agree more. Pretties first, performance second :)
