Not to be argumentative, but I'd say the whole Protestant obsession with personal salvation is damaging, too, and potentially on a deeper level than 'once saved.'' Christ commanded us to keep an outward focus (love God and neighbor) but the obsession with salvation can put one on a path going the opposite way - an inward focus. Now, granted, we are advised to work out our salvation in fear and trembling, and there are a lot of other inward-focused verses on which a counterargument could be built, but that counterargument would seemingly be taking on what Christ calls the Greatest and Second Commandments.

The message preached by both Jesus and John the Baptist was “Repent and believe,” but in Acts 2:38 Peter said, “Repent and be baptized,” without even mentioning belief. Later in Acts, Paul tells the Philippian jailer, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 2:31), without mentioning repentance or baptism. All of these descriptions of salvation are partial. They do not intend to set forth everything necessary.
