@aocruiser The MTH engine doesn't have the cab number in the crew talk either. PS3 doesn't give you any new features, it's just a more modern electronics package inside.
@wilbell13 Though this engine is bigger than several Road switchers, like geeps, most Road engines have dynamic brakes, which are very necessary in stopping a train when you're at 65 mph. This engine has no dynamic brakes, so it couldn't easily stop a train at speed. Regardless of that this engines larger size was necessary to house the 3 Cummins prime movers. It also gives the engine weight, which is needed in the production of Starting Tractive effort which is needed in a switcher.
Hi Eric Nice Review. Only thing I have to say is that to say MTH is a honda is kinda of an insult. Not that I'm taking a shot at you, its just I think MTH is more like the Mercedes if you are comparing it to a rolls. lol Take care.
@esiegel76 Yes they do make a nice car, you're right. I'm all about affordability and quality....MTH Delivers that no doubt! I heard about the new non-vision gensets and that they bumped out the 3 smoke units and it only has one now, plus now flapping smoke stacks! I hear you got one, and I'm guessing you aren't very happy about it. Some things Lionel is doing lately are really bugging me. Another thing is that they don't have the cab #'s announced in the sounds now. Big thumbs down to that!
Nick I agree about Lionel. I have gotten several high quality engines from Lionel since May and have had problems with all of them. Two ES44ACs, the crane and boom w/ TMCC, and the Vision Line Genset. As a newbie, it's leaving a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully I've just been unlucky. BTW, all of my MTH stuff has been perfect.
Nice review Eric! The MTH Genset looks good! MTH never ceases to amaze me! The level of detail is incredible! Detail goes a long way for me. Thanks for sharing! Keep those videos coming!
@esiegel76 About the new Lionel engines not having the cab #'s anymore in the crew talk > It takes away the identity and uniqueness of each engine. I feel MTH has the better sounds by far! Wait until proto 3 diesels come out next month!
I'm just shocked you don't get payed for this very informative reviews you really are a true inspiration to a lot of us O Scale modelrailroaders for the reviews you give out. Amazing job Eric and I'll be looking forward to your future reviews of other MTH and Lionel products.
@esiegel76 MTH never had the engine # is their crew talk, with the exception of a few. Lionel on the other hand is taking a step backwards, whatever is easier and faster to get their engines out of the "mill" so they can make a buck! I'm not saying I'll never buy another Lionel engine, just that I wish they wouldn't have taken out that feature which gives each engine a different personality. BTW...PS3 will have improved sounds, they are incorporating them into some new PS2 engines already.
@esiegel76 Not necessarily Eric, dodge Ram 2500/3500 are pretty good trucks, with a cummins twin turbo package and everything. And the chargers and challengers are great too. Honda doesn't have anything powerful like that.
Brad is correct. The scale wheeled engines need wider curves. I'm not sure a scale wheeled engine will run smoothly on O-42 curves. If it was me, I would not run a scale wheeled engine on O-42.
@bradstrains Yes, but the Dodge Ram's have a Z-2943 internal analytic injector modulator, which has been proven inferior to the more advanced ZX-3003 external twin-turbo assisted overhead modulators that Honda uses. Not to mention the overwhelming evidence against the use of the 45090-T flux capacitor, which was made obsolete years ago by the ultra-violet laser rectifiers. ;)
You already asked me this question. I made a video a while back on installing Kadee couplers on MTH freight cars. The procedure is pretty much the same for the engines. Easier, actually because you don't need to install a shim.
Hi Eric, Thanks for the great comparison, but could you compare the operation of each? Which one operates more proto typically. Can you do a comparison run? Do the MTH smoke stacks operate when each of the 3 engines fire up or do they all smoke at the same time. I think the Lionel fires up individually. thanks!
@@Ericstrains thanks for the timely reply Eric! your blog had inspired me to go out and pre-ordered lionel's new plastic variant genset switcher this past year... I subbed a long time ago!

I like it ! I have the Norfolk Southern Genset from MTH.. thanks for sharing Eric and great video !
Just received #1303 today, $440 Brady’s train outlet. Checked your review first before I ran it.
Nice video Eric
this makes me want one

I love that horn. Canadian tuned K3L

Excellent review Eric!!! P.S. It looks like I'm going to be able to make it up for the Piedmont Pilgrimage this year! Yee Haa! Talk to you soon!

Nice video with tons of information thanks

@bradstrains That's why they make both a 3-rail version with the large couplers and a 2-rail version with the scale couplers.
Nice review
Great Job Eric! I always enjoy watching your videos!
Those are scale hoppers from Weaver. They're built to scale, so the height is prototypically correct as far as I know.
You should make Playlists of your videos.
Jason Stroman I have several already
Beautiful
It depends on how much room you have underneath. On this engine I used the short gear boxes because there's not a lot of room down there.
ericstrains the genset would look teally good in Penn Central.
I saw this locomotive before. It was a Union Pacific one. It was idling in Roselle,NJ.
@esiegel76 OK. Cool. I might be able to get one for Christmas.
Yes, if you plan on running it on 3-rail track.
The installation of the Kadee couplers on the engines is pretty much identical to installation on a freight car. It's even easier, actually.

@Weiberts They are out. I've got 2 of them waiting for me at the train store.
the horn and bell sound more like the prototype than the very expensive lionel! wow......

I don't like scale wheel couplers there to small good review like the engine just not the couplers on it
Great review Eric! The MTH genset looks and sounds great! It's hard to beat dependability!
I used to Kadee #806 o-scale couplers on these Gensets.
I really like the bell on this switcher!
Great video as usual :). Are you still going to do the video with your friend on how you guys did your camera car? Thanks.
Nice.
Great review Eric! I love the bell. It is very realistic! Do you know why the NS ones aren't out yet?
awesome horn Canadian K5H
You already asked me this question. I made a video a while back on installing Kadee couplers on MTH freight cars. The procedure is pretty much the same for the engines. Easier, actually because you don't need to install a shim.
Are these still available??
Nice E-Bell on this engine.
@esiegel76 LOL Yeah that would have been!
looks similar to your other switcher video. Cool video though!

operates more proto typically. Can you do a comparison run? Do the MTH smoke stacks operate when each of the 3 engines fire up or do they all smoke at the same time. I think the
Lionel fires up individually.
thanks!
I don't think a Honda would have twice the engine of a rolls Royce. 2 motors vs 1 motor.
@PghTrainFanatic Calling it a Dodge would have been an insult.
Are you having an open house any time soon. I live in Gwinnett and was wondering if I could see your layout
Eric I'm confused. Is this a Premier or railking model
Premier
@@Ericstrains thanks for the timely reply Eric! your blog had inspired me to go out and pre-ordered lionel's new plastic variant genset switcher this past year... I subbed a long time ago!
Run the wires directly to the track is my guess.
@AloneIStand454 Yes, 10/29/2011
Guess what Lionel Genset Switcher only comes with one motor so you will get a better pulling engine with MTH.
Not necessarily, I'm not sure exactly how they stack up, but the Lionel model has a diecast body which increases it's pulling power.
Yea More Money, More Trains, More Reviews, More FUN !
Luv the bell for some reason
UGH How I wish I could convince my dad to switch to Kadees...
Hi Eric, are those 2 bay covered hoppers you're pulling shorter in height than regular scale freight?
where did you get the train
@PghTrainFanatic Hey, Honda makes a great car and they're more affordable than a Mercedes. MTH is all about affordable quality, sorta like a Honda. :)
@esiegel76 Flux capacitor! LOL Eric!
@esiegel76 As always, great review.
