- In this video I show how I fit, for the first time, latches with a 30mm back set and handles with narrow back plate in doors with only 60mm stiles.
Love the grin on your face Del at the end.
Hi Johnny🖐I think my job makes me a bit too happy sometimes 🤩 Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
👍 very light looking door , neat work Del 🤟🇮🇪☘️👏👏
Hi John🖐They were actually heavier than they looked💪Thanks for your comment😎Cheers Del

Lovey job Del 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
Thanks for watching Andy😎
A highly skilled artisan carpenter, as a man renovating his property, I’ve learnt so much from your videos, thank you (electrician by trade, but will try anything)
That's a very generous comment Alfie🤗and its awesome that you find my videos useful🤩Thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del
Outstanding job as usual Del. All the best mate. Looking forward to seeing more this year pal 👍🏻
Thanks Paul🤩Really looking forward to the year ahead, and already got a few videos edited up and ready to drop👊Thanks for your kind comment, and for watching😎Cheers Del
I can't believe you just posted this video. I just had this same issue today on my sons house. I went though the internet trying to find a solution with no examples for this problem. Then you post this 4 hours later. Fantastic!! Thank you very much.
Hi Brian🖐I swear our phones are listening to our conversations even when we're not on them 😲It's really cool that my video might have helped👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Top notch job done with pride and perfection, love the cheeky grin and the thumbs up to camera!
Hi Chris🖐I think my grin and thumbs up genuinely reflects my happiness of getting the job done well🤩Thanks for your kind words and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Del, Door hardware can be a nightmare ,especially as a lot of customers cannot take advice and also provide you with ,as I call it "brass crud" I always insist on supplying latches and keeps. Happy (and prosperous ) New Year.... Bob ( Somerset)
Hi Bob🖐Yes, bud, been there many times😬Fortunately, this customer wants quality so it's been a breeze on the that front👊Hope you have a great 2022😎Thanks for watching🤩Cheers Del
Next Level.. home owner lucky to have you working on their property
Hi Moxie🖐Its not actually my job, but the carpenter was no longer available, so I got the call to help🤩Thanks for your great comment, and for watching😎Cheers Del
Wow that is tight to the stop..
Those dust boxes are a right pain!
Nice job mate.. looks spot on
Thanks for your comment Craig🤩 I actually don't mine the dust boxes, and, YES, there isn't a lot of space between the handle back plate and the stop🤪 Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
aha! I think TC is the only guy i know who installs the dust boxes (and so - so have i)
@@garvielloken3929 I did 10 just before Xmas and it was loooooong.. does look a lot better for it tho
@@garvielloken3929 I love em Garviel😘
Lovely piece of hardware on the doors, I would be terrified trying to dig those latches out on those matt black doors, but hey that's why your the professional and I'm not....😊 great piece of work done.
Hi Arthur🖐 Thanks for you great comment and I definitely had to take care on these ones🤗Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Real clean job 👍🏻
Hi Carter🖐Thanks for watching bud 😎Cheers Del
Nice job!
Thanks for watching Mark😎Cheers Del
Great video , thanks
Cheers Michael😎
You did a great job there Del 👏👏 never seen doors like this before, I expect they were only 35mm thick. Hope you are fully better now and just easing yourself into work again.
Hi Kevin🖐Yes, I've never come across doors like these, or 30mm backset latches😬I'm, pretty much back up to full speed, and got a few more videos all ready to go👊Thanks for your kind regards bud😎Cheers Del
These are the type of jobs where the souber jig comes into its own. Worth the time to set it up but it will be spot on.
Hi David🖐Yes, you're absolutely right, and I genuinely think the Souber set up would be perfect for this👊Great comment, and thanks for watching😎Cheers Del
Good job Del nice to see you back. That is an unusual narrow stile internal room door I too have never done one of them. Narrow stile doors on the other hand I have done a lot. You must have as well surely. There was a trend probably in the eighties for squeezing French doors into an old window space and giving new access to the garden and more light. These often had stupidly narrow stiles and also often rebates. My least favourite door lock job. If the lock manufacturers had to fit them on site they would change the design. Full big mortice locks to install in them was common and they were readily available as narrow stile lock sets. No door stops to contend with though. Love those handles you put on that door. Never seen anything like that fitting stile in Oz. Most of our system locks screw together through the door.
Hi Dave🖐I have worked on a couple of those French, narrow stile doors, and, you're so right, they are bloody awful things😩I've fitted a wide range of doors over the last 35 years, and like you say, new trends bring some weird and wonderful things😖Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Nice doors, really stylish, good work chippie for sourcing adequate ironmongery. Craftsman as well as designer I see! Top man.
Hi there🖐The owners have gone to great lengths, design wise, to make a wonderful property, and I feel it is deserving of the extra effort👊Thanks for watching, and your comment😎Cheers Del
Perfect Dell s always mate so nice to watch a fellow chipy doing his utmost best for clients
Hi Mark🖐It's great to have you watching bud, and, as you say, we should be doing our best to make our clients happy🤩(then we get paid👍). Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
That was a really good instructional video.
Thanks mate.
Cool doors as well
Hi Billy🖐I think they turned out great, and the customer is pleased👊Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
HNY Del. Thanks for another masterclass of craft 👍
Hi there🤩HNY backatcha👊Thanks for you kind comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Great job!No room for any mistakes you make it look easy👍
Hi Mark🖐I did take my time to be honest, as I just didn't want the agro of spoiling a door that would take 10 months to replace😬Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Good to see you back Del! Not sure on those narrow stile doors but the choice of handle and latch was perfect for the job. I did like the spindle guides that broke out easily, a real help lining the handle plates. Black paint on white wood was always going to leave a mark but a great job leaving the minimum amount. 👍🏼
Hi Simon🖐I too thought the snap out spindle guides were really well thought out, and, obviously, a great help👊The doors and handles look great, and the customer is happy, which is all that counts🤩Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Another top tip big man thank you it was worth the wait. 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽
Hi Charranjit🤩Thanks bud, and appreciate your comment and you watching😎Cheers Del
Good to see almost the same method I use to chip in a latch. Only difference is I will drill the hole for the keep first then feather out top and bottom for the strike plate.
Lovely job as always and great to see you get over the problem of the narrow stiles. Cheers
Hi se7en teen 🖐I suspect we are cut from the same cloth when it comes to our carpentry bud🤩Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Yes TC!!! Nice to see you back. Hope you had some fantastic holidays! As usual, fantastic job. Those black doors looked quite smart!
Hi Garviel🖐My Christmas break was dominated by illness unfortunately, but I'm firing on all cylinders now👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
🤜
class work. its mad how many different sizes of backset are available for latches. so much of the work we do is where you have one shot at getting it right on fairly expensive gear. class feeling when usually it goes absolutely perfect aswell
Hi Paul🖐Clearly you understand how quickly the job can turn bad and you're looking at having to tell the customer you've spoiled or damaged something and all the agro and expense that comes with it😖Certain jobs, you just gotta be on your A game👊Like you say, great feeling when it all comes together sweet🤗Thanks for watching mate 😎Cheers Del
Small paint chips like that I usually touch up with a permanent marker.
I think that's all that is needed on the door Eduard, and its a great tip👍Thanks for watching and your comment😎Cheers Del
Del get yourself a souber lock jig would have made this a breeze great work btw
I know it would David😝Maybe 2022 will be the year to get one🤞Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Another great video and extremely professional job as usual, thanks
Hi Paddy🖐Thanks, as always, for watching, and your great comment😎Cheers Del
Lovely job. I sometimes don't get keep spot on by measure so now I tape as you did and put pensel lead on catch close door and operate handle to mark latch. Getting old and blind😂
Hi Ian🖐I hate the fact that my eyesight is going for close up work, and its just part of getting old I guess😢 Putting lead on the latch is a great and accurate way of getting the keep marked👍Thanks for watching, and your great comment😎Cheers Del
Yey....Dels back. Happy New Year.
Hi Bob🖐Happy New Year to you as well🤗Been out of action isolating, then with C19, and then this awful cold/flu thing that's going around😢So glad to be back a work now and firing on all cylinders👊Thanks for your message, and for watching😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Indeed Del, I have noticed our staff outages over the last few months. ( I am on Screwfix trade counter). Fingers crossed, i have dodged everything in the last few years.
@@bobmartin5101 Fingers crossed for you Bob🤞
You naughty man. Fancy using a claw hammer on your chisels, you will be chiseling with a screwdriver next! Paul sellers will have a fit!! 😄
Hi Paul🖐 GUILTY 😔 I'm not precious about my chisels and they are a real miss match😵I know I'm breaking the carpentry code😝Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Nice job as usual. I've seen similar doors like that but glazed as a room divider? Though you didn't spec them they do seem a bit thin for room doors, I can see them being changed once the occupants realise how much noise they allow in. I agree, I hate roller catches too, like a caravan cupboard!!, and with thin doors, not great in a fire. Something I get called to do is repair narrow linings around the striking plate where a huge keep back box has been fitted, usualy to a bathroom door with latch. The thin remaining meat on the leading edge of the lining breaks away. Probably not great original installation as well, so glad yours was smaller. Keep up the good work, always nice to see what you're up to.
Hi John🖐I know exactly what you're talking about with keeps in narrow linings👊Seen it myself, and as you say, huge amount of material taken out for the keep leaves the lining VERY weak😩(probably not great to repair either 😪)Thanks for your great comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Hello Del, nice to see you back. Hope you and family had a great christmas and happy new year to you! All the best. Phill 🖐
Hi Phill 🖐 Our Christmas was dominated by C19, and me, my wife, and both my children had it😢 We all were ok, and it was like having a hangover for week😮 At least I didn't loose much work time, but I didn't even have any mince pies😬Thanks for your message, and I hope you and yours had a nice break😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Sorry to hear that Del, glad your all ok now!
Must have bin horrible, no mince pies for christmas lol 😁 only kiddin, glad yor well 👍👍👍
Hi Del, This is the best one yet you have done, due to the info on the tools and sizes you used. Maybe worth doing an Amazon inventory of the tools you use, as I certainly would be interested in buying and you would earn a little too 👌 All the best 👍
Hi Nicky🖐I really appreciate your generous comment, and I've still got a lot to learn about all the extra parts of being a UA-camr like the Amazon thing😝Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Blimey, top class that, I would put a clamp on the door when it came to the 22mm Auger bit, in fact I would use a flat bit as I've found Auger bits tend to want to open things up and split doors, interested on your thoughts on that, top job 👌
Hi Andy🖐You'll notice that I used a bigger pilot drill for the latch body hole, this ensures the screw on the auger bit doesn't split the door👍A clamp is still a great safety precaution against accidental splitting though, as is using a spade bit👊Thanks for watching bud😎Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Yea I noticed the pilot ,didn't realise that was the cure, handy tip Ile try that 👍👍
@@bricklayersworldwithandy6277 👍😎
Very nice job I never came across those latches I was only saying to a customer on Monday its very difficult once the paint finish is done to cut in to it after and leave a perfect finish
Hi Lee 🖐You're so right in what you were saying to your customer, and its not really ideal cutting things into highly finished surfaces, and its why most carpenters don't like doing it🤔Thanks for watching and your great comment😎Cheers Del
Hi TC; very belated Happy New Year, good to see you back. Great to see you continue with the 'basics ' of the trade and totally agree with your previous training comments. keep it going. Covid (2nd round) has slowed me down but still hope to get out there on our (stick build) timber frame. all the best. Vic
Hi Vic🖐and a very HNY to you🤩Always appreciate you watching and your comments and wishing you good health in 2022🤩Cheers Del
To good big fella
You're to kind Ivan🤗Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Quality job as always Del. It looks bloody cold in your workshop mate, think you might want to treat yourself to a heater😄
Hi Maverick🖐It was a bit cold in my garage🥶and I have got a heater, I'm just too tight to turn it on😆Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter 😂
Nice job mate 👍👍👍
Cheers Gary🤩and thanks for watching👍ATB Del
You need a change of trousers when doing jobs like this Del😆 nice job as always
Hi Peter🖐I try not to think about it too much, but, your right, one lapse in concentration, and you've trashed a £100 door that would take 10 months to replace 😵Thanks for watching bud, and your comment😎Cheers Del
I have a door with a similar width stile that I’m changing from a rigged “window” to a working door. Can you share where to find that length backseat!? I can’t find anything! Thanks for a great walkthrough
Check this seller out for 30mm and 35mm backset latches👍www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mortice-Door-Tubular-Latch-Internal-Bolt-Facility-Sprung-Catch-Flat-Fork-Durable-/384935070873?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p4429486.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 😎Cheers Del
As usual another great video. Could you post a link for the upgraded latches please.
Hi Smiffy. I'm pretty sure I got them of ebay, but they seemed to be exactly the same as the ones on Amazon. Just search for '30mm back set latches' and you'll find them👍Cheers Del

Hi Del, superb work as usual and the first time I see such a narrow latch! Hope you are doing well! Maybe you missed my message but I uploaded the 100 screws challenge on my channel page. Keep on posting!
Hi there🖐Sorry, I must have missed your message, and I will check out your 100 screw challenge🤗I'd never seen or fitted 30mm backset latches either, so thought it might be interesting to video🤩Thanks for your comment, and, as always, for watching😎Cheers Del
Lovely job. Using the pin on the marking gauge as a bradawl is a tip top top tip. I wonder how long you spent on the internet sourcing the furniture and whether you included that in your price.
Hi Dai🖐Gathering the handles, latches and keeps was a joint effort between me and the customer, so very little time spent there, and I only work on a day rate, so the customer get the job done a bit cheaper, and I'm not under any pressure🤩Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Nice work. But it looks like them frames better been put in right. Firstly 👍🙌
Hi John🖐The linings were pretty good on this job actually, so credit to the carpenter who fitted them👊Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
OK if you only 1 door to hang. But would make no money doing that on 10 .
Nice work though fella.
Keep it coming
Hi Ken🖐You know it bud👊I had to be really careful fitting these as there wasn't much margin for error😬Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Great video Del. Looking forward to the next. Q? when fitting the door stops why do you fit the top part first?
For shrinkage and it looks better. Also, traditionally when planing a door to fit a frame you fix the door stop lath to the head of the frame so when you stand the door in the frame to check for fit and mark the hinges it won’t fall through.
Hi Sandy🖐 se7en teen has answered your question perfectly 🥰 Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi se7en teen👊Absolutely spot on and EXACTLY how I do it🤩Thanks for your comment bud, and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Brilliant I had to take my time and fittl some doors turned out well but how do you fit pre finished without shaving down the doors, thanks in advance delivery amazing work as usual
Hi Stuart🖐 Unless you personally fitted the linings, knowing you were going to be fitting pre-finished doors, then its unlikely that you will be able to fit these doors without some planing. I always take any off the hinge side, as, usually, this is less visible, that the flapping side👊Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter cheers Del that's what I thought but just checking with an expert thanks for your time and reply gentleman 👍
@@stuarthawthorne87 My pleasure Stuart🤩
Those doors are horrible 😫 great work 👏
Hi Goner🖐Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say🤗Thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del

Thanks for watching Wayne😎
I noticed the keep isn’t bent around the doorframe, I was taught a long time ago to do so, in a different country. I like the door frames in the uk much easier to work with. Unrelated question is it normal not to have isolation in between floors?
Hi Rob🖐These keeps have a slight curve to them, so it leads the latch into the keep really nicely👍I'm not aware that floors have to be isolated from each other here in the UK, and they mostly follow through in one🤔Thanks for your comment bud, and for watching😎Cheers Del
Wiping my tablet screen to remove small dark dots only to realise its marks on the wall unit doors behind you, been a long first week back after the holidays I suppose, that's my excuse anyways.
I’ve gotten way too comfortable using my souber lock jig and router for the face plate, instead of using a drill, auger bit, hammer and chisel.
Hi Diarmuid🖐I'm probably missing a trick with the Souber jig, if I'm honest😬Thanks for watching bud😎Cheers Del
