Hello all!! It feels good to have a little more to share for Mudpaw and his story :) I've unfortunately been dealing with some pretty intense creative burnout for the past few months, so working on personal projects like this has been difficult. I've been doing better, lately, though!
I planned/storyboarded this video all the way back in August last year, but I've been ping-ponging between different projects up until just recently. I had a lot of ideas, but I just couldn't find what felt right to work on, if that makes sense? I would try to force myself to work on a cool idea, but then it would never come out right, because my heart wasn't in it. Then I would go a long time without drawing anything, which would make me feel worse, because I wasn't being productive, and THAT would make me want to force myself to work on projects MORE, which obviously did not work out well haha. I was just kind of caught up in a loop of trying to force myself into being better, instead of actually taking time to rest, and then making my burnout worse. Would not recommend!!
I'm trying to be more careful about listening to my brain/body and taking breaks when I need them. I'm so much more proud of my work when I'm making things with real passion! Thank you all for your continued patience and support, it means so much to me :')

Story:
Owlpounce, the clan healer, has taken on a new apprentice. She has high hopes for him, after receiving a sign from Starclan telling her to train him in the ways of medicine. However, it's becoming clear that Mudpaw has a lot to work through; the death of his previous mentor seems to be affecting him greatly. This is to be expected, of course! No young cat would be able to shrug off something so serious as the unexpected death of a mentor. Owlpounce promises herself to be as supportive as she can be. She'll do her very best to guide her new apprentice through these trying times.
Things may not be as they seem, though; Owlpounce doesn't have the full picture...

I think Owlpounce’s design might be my favorite out of all my little kitty cat characters ^^ she’s so much fun to draw
The bedding having feathers (I suspect crow feathers) is a nice touch! I also like how tired Mudpaw looks, even after Owl calms him. As if he's noth just physically, but emotionally drained. Get better little guy!
If Owlpounce turns on Mudpaw when the truth is revealed I will be very angry and possibly require vengeance.

This video is so gorgeous and such a breath of fresh air. As complicated and dark as the situation is, I'm glad Mudpaw has at least some relief from it all and Owlpounce is so genuine and gentle with him. I hope things don't go downhill again...but I also know they will :(

I wonder if you'll ever tackle like. the actual issues that come with Mudpaw killing a whole person. It seems you made Wrentail the devil on earth from your comments, but that does not always show on the videos, like him hesitating before Mudpaw kills him or still being willing to take Mudkit into MicaClan (which doesnt match his mentality of "traitor's blood" and stuff - why not let Mudkit die for his dad's sins then if he always knew it would end poorly?). I dont like Wrentail at all, but I always assumed this was a complex situation. Most recent videos are about how Mudpaw is suffering and needs support (very true, he does!) but... He still killed a person. Is he still gonna be a serial killer kitty like in the original Johnny video?
Not trying to be too bad of a critic and I'll enjoy whatever you do (LOVED the animation and expressions here, its SO soft!!), its just me trying to make sense of the lore that currently exists. More and more the cast is revealed the type that could have offered Mudpaw some support if he had spoken up, y'know?

This is a really good point! I forget that most people following mudpaw's story don't follow my tumblr haha, I get into a lot of your questions/observations over on my blog!
My portrayal of Wrentail in the videos is very intentional. I specifically _don't_ portray him as pure evil, specifically because _real people aren't like that_ . Real life abusers are capable of doing good things, they are still thinking, feeling, complex individuals. However, this under no circumstances excuses abuse. In the case of Wrentail, he's the sort of person that does what he feels he can get away with justifying to himself. I could go into detail about his personal moral code and the way he's a walking contradiction in practice, but I think that would make this reply too long lol.
As for Mudpaw and his... extrajudicial justice... I try to show through the videos that the cats of Micaclan, while generally being caring individuals, are victim to their group-thinking. This is something that I have a hard time portraying effectively, I think, just because it's a complex issue to convey through pure visuals haha. But essentially, Micaclan as a whole has spent Mudpaw's entire life just... ignoring him. Not necessarily maliciously; I'd even say it's almost entirely subconscious on their part. Mudpaw is an outsider, even if he was brought up in the clan, and it's much easier to let their eyes slide past the little blip in their group, to try to ignore it, instead of taking the time to look closer, or to examine their own biases. It's easy to assume that someone else will take care of things, when you live in a group like that.
The death of Wrentail, however, is what jostles many of them out of that easy way of thinking. To let the odd apprentice be someone else's problem is one thing, but to ignore an actively grieving apprentice is something else entirely. Wrentail's death is the catalyst behind the other cats of the clan beginning to make an effort to understand and help Mudpaw.
It's true, practically any cat in the clan would have helped Mudpaw if he'd come forward with what was happening to him, but _Mudpaw didn't know that_ . To him, it felt as though he was alone. Like the only way anything would ever change is if _he_ did something to help himself. When you feel completely isolated, how do you even begin to ask for help? How do you even know it's an option?
You're right to say that this is a complicated situation, but I personally don't blame a scared kid for doing what he thought he had to in order to keep himself safe. There are certainly better ways he could have handled the situation, but Mudpaw is young, and was under an incredible amount of stress for an extended period of time. He's emotional, and irrational, and is now wracked with a confused mix of equal parts guilt and relief. He didn't do the right thing in killing Wrentail, but I don't think he's fully in the wrong either.
For the serial killer plot line, that's been scrapped for quite a while now! I ended up taking the story in a different direction, not least of all because of the way that a story like that would portray abuse survivors. Mudpaw, at heart, is not an evil person. He's a kid that's been put into a situation no kid should have to deal with. I want to do justice by him, and by the people who might feel connected to him and his story.

I'm a little nervous about what will happen should the truth of Wrentail's death be revealed (especially given how Wrentail's twisting the story in Starclan), but I do have faith that Owlpounce will at the very least let Mudpaw tell his side of the story and state his case on why he did what he did.
