Weevils are in everything grain wise. Especially corn meal and oats. Freeze for a week and you'll be good to go. My grandma used to put bay leaves everywhere to stop them
I forgot about the bay and I do have a ton....I started reading the link that I attached...how much garbage is allowed into things we eat and I had to stop reading it....😵💫
I bought a bag of cornmeal maybe a month ago and didn't freeze because I needed it.. anyway, I opened it and when I went to scoop some out a little speck caught my attention because I thought it moved. Stood there watching it and sure enough many specks were moving... had to throw the entire 5 LB bag out!
@@OldSchoolPrepper thank you, I will definitely be doing that going forward. You're 100% right, once you see them there's no going back. Have a wonderful day. :-)
I made the mistake of not freezing a box of oats not long ago....... sigh........ Probably 95% of all my kitchen utensils were granny's. When she passed, I called dibs on her old Betty Crocker Cookbook and found her chili recipe in it. It isn't the best but hubby insists that is the only one to use and will ask repeatedly if each bowl is hers.
But wont they leave their fecal matter and stuff in it? How common is this? Ive never heard of weebiks before today, until I was reading a review online about cake flour i wanted and a person said weeviks were in it, so then i ended up here, im traumatized now, definitely want to clean my flour for sure😢😢😢
hi Emily, I hate to break it to you but you've been eating weevils (and all the goes with them) since you've been eating food. The link, I posted in the description, will take you to the US Federal Governements (FDA) 'allowable' amonts of insect matter, rodent matter and other 'unavoidable defects" allowed in food. Only click on the link it you want to know this info...it is unsettling. Think about this...bugs live in nature. So happy little weevils/beetles are living in the wheat field. The farmer drives the big harvester to collect the wheat and the bugs are still on the wheat so then end up in your flour or cornmeal or cake flour or even your fruit & veg. It's part of life and your diet I just don't want live bugs in my flour so I freeze it. The only way to avoid bug in your flour would be to grow your own wheat and hand inspect every plant, pulling off any bugs. The bug eggs are so small you'd need a magnifying glass to see them...you can see the problem with that method. I think it's interesting that more vegan's aren't talking about this but that's a different conversation.
I have never done this and have never seen them but have known they exist and can get into your food-also bug “parts” not whole bugs that are reproducing-because some likely fall in during processing-something fear-mongering-ish about this vid
the bugs don't fall in during processing, they are picked up during harvesting and some never die (many female weevils/beetles etc lay larvae inside grain). I'm guessing that since you've never seen them than you are fairly young and don't spend a ton around significant quantities of stored grain/flours. Some things that people attribute to mice are actually weevil/beetle damage. of course you should never trust some rando on YT so just give it a quick Google. I did just that and found 100's of articles on the topic. Here is one for your reading enjoyment: www.thespruce.com/what-is-a-weevil-2656439 or www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/weevils-what-to-know
@@OldSchoolPrepper oh so I am just too young to have had that life experience? Thanks didn’t know middle age wasn’t sufficient for a different perspective
Also I did say I have heard of them. But it just seems extreme. Perhaps people who are homesteading and buying in bulk. Idk I’ve also lived all over the US in varying climates.
I buy 25 pound bags and put it into mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Never had any problems. Have never personally seen a weevil and I'm middle age as well. Your video would be better if you could show us the weevils that you were removing because as you said, they're always there.

@@OldSchoolPrepper there is a reason I started this lifestyle. This is one of those reasons
That's how Huples gets his meat protein, he eats the smaller ones because it's the lesser of two weevils lol
2 weevils! 😜
You can bet that bakeries and restaurants and such do not screen flour. It is what it is.
agreed

you can save it, if you sieve it....it is very hard to unsee the little buggers they seem to be everywhere... ☮️

Oh dear. Never froze any of ours and we have a sizable stash downstairs. If I had the room in my freezer we'd do it! :/
if weevils show up, at least you'll know how to deal with them...just freeze, sift them out and keep the flour.
How helpful. Thank you.
☮️keep the weevils out!
Yep...I do the same
smart! ☮️
Thank you very much ❤️
You're welcome 😊
